Abstract:The thermal ring closure of 4-methyl-7-(1,1-disubstituted propyn-2-yloxy)chromen-2-ones (1) with gem-dihydro- or dimethyl-group at the propargylic position was carried out at high temperature such as refluxing in N,N-diethylaniline and resulted in the analogues of 4-methyl-2H-pyrano[6,5-h]2H-chromen-2-one (2). As the substituents at the propargylic position became bulkier, this ring closure could occur in much milder conditions such as refluxing in acetone or stirring in DMF at 80-90degreesC. The five-membered products, 4-methyl-furano [2,3-h]2H-chromen-2-ones (3) gradually became the main products.
The Mechanism and Kinetic Analysis of C4h4 + C4h4 (But-1-ene-3-yne) Reaction with Features of H-Transfer in Combustion

Abstract:Detailed mechanisms of C4H4 + C4H4 reaction were investigated by accurate ab initio density functional theory B3LYP/6-311 + G(d,p) calculations, as well as CBS-QB3 calculations. It was found that styrene, phenylacetylene and 5-membered ring structure can be formed in C4H4 + C4H4 reaction through five parallel and competing pathways. Three pathways are featured with H-transfer and dehydrogenation reactions, and the other two pathways are characterized with the forming and breaking of C-C bond. The H-transfer reactions play a vital role in stabilizing intermediates. It was found that the H-transfer reaction is significantly dependent on the relative position of two C atoms, the degree of saturation of the second C atom, and the electronic environment of molecule. Generally, an ortho-position unsaturated C atom with relative small positive atomic charge is preferable in H-transfer reaction. The yield of products and reaction rate coefficients were evaluated by using Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus theory with solving master equation at different combustion temperatures and pressures (T = 800-2500 K, P = 0.1-10 atm). The kinetic results indicate that styrene is the dominant product and the formation of other two products can be ignored when temperature is lower than 1600 K. The formations of phenylacetylene and 5-membered ring structure are only facilitated at higher temperature, but dependent on the combustion pressure. Specifically, phenylacetylene is favored by higher pressure and higher temperature, while 5-membered ring structure is favored by lower pressure and higher temperature. Abstract:In the condensation of arylaldehydes with arylethylidenemalononitriles, it was found that, besides the normal product dienes a, the ring-closure product quinoline derivatives b can be also obtained in 26%-50% yields. The substituent effects were also examined and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed for the formation of b. The X-ray crystal structure of 1b confirms the structure of the ring-closure product.

Abstract:In the present study, the mechanism, origin of chemoselectivity as well as substituent effects have been investigated using the DFT method. Multiple pathways, including the formation of hydrofluorenone, Cloke-Wilson, and cyclopenta-fused products, are studied and compared. The computational results show that the pathway for formation of hydrofluorenone is the most favorable, which contains four processes: nucleophilic substitution to open the three-membered ring, intramolecular Michael addition for the formation of an enolate intermediate, intramolecular [1,5]-proton transfer to give the ylide, and intramolecular Wittig reaction to deliver the final product. For clarifying the chemoselectivity, structural analysis and the local reactivity index analysis are employed. Moreover, the substituent effects are also considered using the QTAIM analysis. The current study would provide useful insights for understanding the phosphine-catalyzed chemoselective reactions.

Abstract:Ring-opening reactions of cyclopropenedicarboxylates with organolithiums and organozincs have been studied. Organolithiums and dialkyl-or diphenylzincs afforded a series of 1-alkenyl malonates with attack occurring by the organic group from the organometallic reagent at the less substituted sp(2)-hybridized carbon of the cyclopropene moiety. Mechanistic studies proved both anion and dianion intermediates are involved in the reactions with organolithiums. Phenylcyclopropenedicarboxylate and phenylzinc bromide underwent a ring-opening dimerization to afford a 1,4-enyne product.

Abstract:The ring-opening reaction of dimethylol propionic acid with glycidyl methacrylate was investigated. The effects of reaction temperature, catalysts, loading amount of catalyst, solvent and ratio of reactants were studied. The results indicated that optimizing conditions were as follows:DMF was used as solvent, reaction temperature was 110 ℃, the loading amout of TBAB was 5%, and the ratio of dimethylol propionic acid and glycidyl methacrylate was 1:1. 2. The products were obtained in yield of 89. 4% under optimization conditions.

Abstract:The gallium chloride (GaCl(3))-catalyzed ring-closing metathesis reaction mechanism of N-2,3-butadienyl-2-propynyl-1-amine has been studied at the Becke three-parameter hybrid functional combined with Lee-Yang-Parr correlation functional (B3LYP)/6-31G(d), B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p)//B3LYP/ 6-31G(d) and the second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation (MP2)/6-311++G(d,p)//B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) levels. It was found that the final metathesis product can be yielded via a three-membered or four-membered ring mechanism. The three-membered ring pathway is favorable due to its low energy barrier at the rate determining step. The whole reaction is stepwise and strongly exothermic.

Abstract:2-Methylene- or alkylidenecyclopropanyl ketones were easily prepared by the regioselective cyclopropanation of allenes or the reaction of methylene-/alkylidenecyclopropanyllithium with N,N-dimethyl carboxylic acid amides. Due to the presence of the exo-cyclic C=C bond and the strained cyclopropane, their highly selective ring-opening cycloisomerization using PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2), NaI (or PdCl(2)(CH(3)CN)(2) + NaI), and Pd(PPh(3))(4) as catalysts provided five different products, i.e., 4H-pyrans, 2,3,4-trisubstituted furans (or 4,5-disubstituted-3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans), and 2,3,4,5-tetrasubtituted furans (or 2,4,5-trisubstituted-3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans) in good yields, respectively, depending on the nature of the catalyst and reaction conditions. The less-substituted C=C bonds in these products can be highly selectively hydrogenated or hydroborated to afford new heterocyclic products stereoselectively. These three types of different reactions may proceed through a highly regioselective cleavage of a carbon-carbon single bond in the cyclopropane ring triggered by regioselective halometalation of the C=C bond and beta-decarbopalladation, halogen anion attack on the nonsubstituted carbon atom of the cyclopropane ring, or the direct oxidative addition of the distal carbon-carbon single bond of the cyclopropane ring with Pd(0). In some cases substituent effects were successfully applied to synthesize 2H-pyrans 8 and 3-alkylidene-2,3-dihydrofurans 5, which also provided some mechanistic information.

Abstract:To further reveal the reactivity of cyclopropenylidene with R-H compounds, mechanisms of four reactions between cyclopropenylidene and R-H (R= F, OH, NH2, CH3) have been systematically investigated employing the second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) method. Geometry optimization, vibrational analysis, and energy property for the involved stationary points on the potential energy surface have been calculated. All the mechanisms of four reactions are identical to each other. Based on the calculated results, there are three steps (step a, b, and c) along the reaction between cyclopropenylidene and R-H. For the first step, cyclopropenylidene is inserted into R-H to form an three-membered ring intermediate. For the second step, the three-membered ring is opened to form a carbene intermediate. With regard to the third step, it is H-transfered processes, the ultimate product is alkyne.

Abstract:The reaction of the seven-membered azazirconacycloallene 2 with Ph2CHCN was carried out to yield a zirconocene complex with three fused rings and a keteniminate ligand. Further reactivity toward propargyl bromide or propionyl chloride shows that the keteniminate ligand can be replaced by halogen atoms (Br or Cl). In addition, the reaction of the strained four-membered zirconacycle 1 with Ph2CHCN gives zirconocenes possessing vinyl-imine and keteniminate species.
Versatile Reactivity of Β-Diketiminato-supported Yttrium Dialkyl Complex Toward Aromatic N-Heterocycles

Abstract:The reactions of beta-diketiminatoyttrium dialkyl complex LY(CH2Ph)(2)(THF) (1, L = [{N(2,6-(Pr2C6H3)-Pr-i)C(Me)}(2)CH](-)) with a series of aromatic N-heterocycles such as 2-phenylpyridine, benzothiazole, and benzoxazole were studied and displayed discrete reactivity including C-H activation, C-C coupling, ring-opening/insertion, and dearomatization. The reaction of 1 with 2-phenylpyridine in 1:2 molar ratio in THF at 30 degrees C for 14 days afforded a structurally characterized metal complex, LY(eta(2)-N,C-C5H4NC6H4-2)[C5H4N(CH2Ph-4)Ph] (2), in 73% isolated yield, indicating the occurrence of phenyl ring C(sp2)-H activation and pyridine ring 1,4-addition/dearomatization. However, when this reaction was done at 5 degrees C for 7 days, it gave the pyridine ring 1,2-addition product LY(eta(2)-N,C-C5H4NC6H4-2)[C5H4N(CH2Ph-2)Ph] (3) in 54% isolated yield. Further investigations revealed that complex 2 is the thermodynamic controlled product and complex 3 is the kinetically controlled product; 3 converted slowly into 2, as confirmed by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The equimolar reaction of 1 with benzothiazole or benzoxazole produced two C-C coupling/ring-opening/insertion products, LY[eta(2)-S,N-SC6H4NCH(CH2Ph)(2)]-(THF) (4) and {LY[mu-eta(2):eta(1)-O,N-OC6H4NCH(CH2Ph)(2)]}(2) (5), in 84% and 78% isolated yields, respectively.

Abstract:Exploiting the crossed molecular beam technique, we studied the reaction of the 1-propynyl radical (CH 3 CC; X 2 A 1 ) with 2-methylpropene (isobutylene; (CH 3 ) 2 CCH 2 ; X 1 A 1 ) at a collision energy of 38 ± 3 kJ mol −1 . The experimental results along with ab initio and statistical calculations revealed that the reaction has no entrance barrier and proceeds via indirect scattering dynamics involving C 7 H 11 intermediates with lifetimes longer than their rotation period(s). The reaction is initiated by the addition of the 1-propynyl radical with its radical center to the π-electron density at the C1 and/or C2 position in 2-methylpropene. Further, the C 7 H 11 intermediate formed from the C1 addition either emits atomic hydrogen or undergoes isomerization via [1,2-H] shift from the CH 3 or CH 2 group prior to atomic hydrogen loss preferentially leading to 1,2,4-trimethylvinylacetylene (2-methylhex-2-en-4-yne) as the dominant product. The molecular structures of the collisional complexes promote hydrogen atom loss channels. RRKM results show that hydrogen elimination channels dominate in this reaction, with a branching ratio exceeding 70%. Since the reaction of the 1-propynyl radical with 2-methylpropene has no entrance barrier, is exoergic, and all transition states involved are located below the energy of the separated reactants, bimolecular collisions are feasible to form trimethylsubstituted 1,3-enyne ( p1 ) via a single collision event even at temperatures as low as 10 K prevailing in cold molecular clouds such as G+0.693. The formation of trimethylsubstituted vinylacetylene could serve as the starting point of fundamental molecular mass growth processes leading to di- and trimethylsubstituted naphthalenes via the HAVA mechanism.

Ring-opening of Tertiary Cyclopropanols Derived from Β-Diketones

Abstract:The ring-opening reaction of 1,2-disubstituted cyclopropanols, prepared from β-diketones, mediated by Cu(NO3)2, p-TsOH, and NaOH is reported. The Cu(II)-mediated ring-opening of cyclopropanols gave α-methylene-γ-diketones in good yields. The reaction took place at the less substituted carbon of the cyclopropanols, involving mild conditions and a simple procedure. The reaction induced by p-TsOH in CH2Cl2 afforded α-methyl-γ-diketones as the major product with minor amounts of δ-diketones. The 2,3,5-trisubstituted furans were obtained in high yields when the ring-opening reaction was mediated by p-TsOH in methanol under reflux conditions. In the presence of sodium hydroxide the reaction proceeded smoothly in preference to the formation of δ-diketones, particularly for substrates with an aromatic group on the cyclopropane.
Understanding the Diverse Reactivity of Pentaphenylborole toward Epoxides

Abstract:Density functional theory calculations have been performed to study the diverse reactivity of pentaphenylborole toward different epoxides. We systematically investigated the effect of substituents on epoxides for the preference/competition of three experimentally observed pathways, that is, intramolecular proton transfer, direct ring expansion via insertion of one epoxide molecule, and ring expansion via insertion of two epoxide molecules. Our calculations also predicted a high competitivity between the proton transfer and direct ring expansion pathways for the epoxide containing both alkyl and aryl substituents.

Abstract:Ring opening polymerization of propylene oxide in the presence of a new type of catalytic system composed of chitosan-supported rare earth complex, triisobutyl aluminium, and acetylacetone and its kinetics have been studied for the first time. It has been found that the characteristics of this catalytic system are of high catalytic activity, of higher stereoselectivity, and of a high molecular weight polymer of 2 x 10(6). Kinetic studies show that the polymerization rate is first order with respect to monomer concentration and catalyst concentration, respectively. The apparent activation energy of the polymerization reaction is 37.1 kJ/mol. (C) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Ring opening versus ring expansion in rearrangement of bicyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals.

Abstract:[GRAPHICS] Ring opening and expansion of multicyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals provides an appealing method for the construction of heavily substituted ring systems in a stereocontrollable fashion. Here we conducted the first, systematic study on the regioselectivity in the rearrangement of various synthetically relevant cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals. It was found that a two-layer ONIOM method, namely ONIOM(QCISD-(T)/6-311 +G(2d,2p):B3LYP/6-311 +G(2df,2p)), could accurately predict the free energy barriers of the ring openings of cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals with a precision of 0.3 kcal/mol. By using this powerful tool we found that the regiochemistry for the ring opening of monocyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals could be easily predicted by the relative stability of the two possible carbon radical products. A linear correlation was found between the activation and reaction free energies. This observation indicated that the ring opening of cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals was strongly affected by the thermodynamic factors. On the basis of the above results we extended our study to the rearrangement of bicyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals that could undergo both ring opening and expansion. It was found that for bicyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals whose radical center was located at the bridge methyl group, ring expansion was the favored rearrangement pathway unless a strongly radical-stabilizing substituent was placed in the cyclobutyl ring adjacent to the bridge methyl group. On the other hand, for bicyclic cyclobutylcarbinyl radicals whose radical center was located at the 2-position, ring opening was the favored rearrangement pathway unless a strongly radical-stabilizing substituent was placed in the cyclobutyl ring at the bridge position.

Abstract:Insertion of benzophenone into the Y-Cp (Cp = C5H5) bond and two new reactivity patterns of the Cp-substituted alkoxide complexes have been established, by which an efficient and convenient method for conversion of the unsubstituted cyclopentadienyl group to the single-carbon-bridged ansa-cyclopentadienyl/alkoxyl ligand by using a simple ketone as the functionalizing reagent is developed. All products including the four-center interaction precursor of the insertion have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses.

Abstract:The predominant transformations of 4-methyl- and 4-phenyl-1,3,3- tris -carbethoxycyclobutenes to s- trans , trans -1,1,3- tris -carbethoxy-4-methyl- and s- trans , trans -1,1,3- tris -carbethoxy-4-phenyl-1,3-butadienes, respectively, are discussed to proceed through pathways entailing heterolytic cleavage of the s C3C4 bond rather than the usual conrotatory ring opening following the rules of torquoselectivity. The adventitious or in situ generated halogen acid from CDCl 3 catalyzes the reaction by protonation of the geminal ester group to weaken s C3C4 bond and allow its S N 2 cleavage by chloride ion. This is followed by cisoid → transoid isomerization and loss of the elements of halogen acid to form the products. In the Lewis acid-catalyzed reaction of 4-phenyl-1,3,3- tris -carbethoxycyclobutene in CH 2 Cl 2 , coordination of Lewis acid with the geminal ester group is followed by heterolytic cleavage of the s C3C4 bond. The resultant species subsequently undergoes cisoid → transoid isomerization before losing the Lewis acid to form the products.

Abstract:Herein we report that readily available 4‐alkenylisocoumarins can be regarded as potent dienolate equivalents. For example, lactol silyl ethers derived from 4‐alkenylisocoumarins were selectively converted to the corresponding benzo‐homophthalates through a fluoride‐induced ring opening step that was followed by a ring closure through a vinylogous intramolecular aldol condensation. Likewise, nucleophilic activation of 4‐alkenylisocoumarins directly yields diversely poly‐substituted naphthalenes and anthracenes without formation of any regioisomer. Photophysical evaluation of a set of thus obtained 1,3‐di‐ and 1,3,4‐trisubstituted anthracenes reveals their distinct intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character during light absorption in polar solutions and excimer emission from the solid state when a face to face π‐stacked molecular assembly is present in the crystal packing.
