Abstract:Primary alcohols were selectively tetrahydropyranylated in good to excellent yields at room temperature using PdCl2(CH3CN)(2) as catalyst in tetrahydrofuran (THF) in the presence of phenols, secondary, and tertiary alcohols. The tetrahydropyranyl (THP) group could be efficiently removed using PdCl2(CH3CN)(2) as catalyst in CH3CN, while other protection groups such as p-toluenesulfonyl (Ts), tert-butyldiphenylsilyl (TBDPS), benzyloxycarbonyl (Cbz), allyl, benzyl (Bn), and benzoyl (Bz) remained intact under these conditions. Abstract:Polystyrene supported TiCl4 (Ps-TiCl4) and polystyrene supported FeCl3 (Ps-FeCl3) were prepared by coordinating Lewis acids with polystyrene. The catalysts were characterized by TGA, BET, SEM, IR and pyridine-adsorbed IR. The loading of Ps-TiCl4 and Ps-FeCl3 were 0.35 and 0.3 mmol center dot g-1 respectively. Both catalysts were found to be efficient for the tetrahydropyranylation and detetrahydropyranylation of various alcohols and phenols in different solvents. Two catalysts can be recovered and reused for five times with good activity.

Abstract:The thermodynamically leveraged conversion of ethers and alcohols to saturated hydrocarbons is achieved efficiently with low loadings of homogeneous M(OTf)(n) + heterogeneous Pd tandem catalysts (M = transition metal; OTf = triflate; n = 4). For example, Hf(OTf)(4) mediates rapid endothermic ether reversible arrow alcohol and alcohol reversible arrow alkene equilibria, while Pd/C catalyzes the subsequent, exothermic alkene hydrogenation. The relative C-O cleavage rates scale as 30 degrees > 20 degrees > 1 degrees. The reaction scope extends to efficient conversion of biomass-derived ethers, such as THF derivatives, to the corresponding alkanes.

Abstract:Aryl carboxylic acids are among the most abundant substrates in chemical synthesis and represent a perfect example of a traceless directing group that is central to many processes in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, natural products and polymers. Herein, we describe a highly selective method for the direct step-down reduction of carboxylic acids to arenes, proceeding via well-defined Pd(0)/(ii) catalytic cycle. The method shows a remarkably broad substrate scope, enabling to direct the classical acyl reduction towards selective decarbonylation by a redox-neutral mechanism. The utility of this reaction is highlighted in the direct defunctionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products, and further emphasized in a range of traceless processes using removable carboxylic acids under mild, redox-neutral conditions orthogonal to protodecarboxylation. Extensive DFT computations were conducted to demonstrate preferred selectivity for the reversible oxidative addition and indicated that a versatile hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway is operable.
Catalytic hydrodechlorination of 2,4,4′-trichloro-2′-hydroxydiphenylether under mild conditions

Abstract:More than 99% of 2,4,4′-trichloro-2′-hydroxydiphenylether (TCPE) by the catalytic hydrogenation over palladium/carbon was firstly dechlorinated under mild conditions. Used molecular hydrogen as the reducing agent, TCPE was completely hydrodechorinated to 2-hydroxydiphenylether (PE) at 50°C and under normal pressure. The solvents affected not only the rate of the dechlorination, but also the selectivity of the hydrogenation. In general, the rate of the dechlorination decreased in the order of alcohols>alkanes>arenes>heterocycles. Addition of the bases (such as sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, triethylamine and pyridine, etc.) to the reaction systems also changed the rate of the reaction and the selectivity of the dechlorination. Except for pyridine, the other bases obviously accelerated the rate of the dechlorination. When the mixture of ethanol–water was used as the reaction solvent instead of ethanol, the rate of the dechlorination was remarkably improved. When a stoichiometric amount of sodium hydroxide was utilized as the proton acceptor in ethanol–water solvent, the catalytic life and the stability of the palladium/carbon were dramatically enhanced and promoted. The dechlorination process worked well in either organic solvents or aqueous solution and thus had potential application in the remediation of contaminated industrial waste water as well.

Abstract:A series of palladium acetylide complexes with the structures of Pd(PPh3)2(CCR)2 (R=C(CH3)2OH, CH2OCOCH3, CH2OH, p-C6H4CCH, C6H5) were developed for homogeneous copolymerization of polar with non-polar alkynes. The catalytic activity of the five palladium acetylide complexes towards copolymerization of propargyl alcohol (OHP) with p-diethynylbenzene (p-DEB) is compared and discussed. The complexes containing polar alkynyl ligands show higher activity than corresponding complexes containing non-polar ligands. Solvent systems exhibit significant influence on realizing homogeneous polymerization and obtaining soluble copolymer. The copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB initiated with these catalysts could proceed under mild conditions to give soluble π-conjugated copolymer in yields as high as 66%. Features for copolymerization of OHP with p-DEB using Pd(PPh3)2(CCCH2OH)2 in CHCl3/MeOH mixed solvents have been described.

Abstract:C-H activation and functionalization are on the forefront of modern synthetic chemistry. Imagine if any C-H bond of a molecule could be converted to a C-X bond, where X is the target functionality-this would alter the synthetic blueprints for complex target molecules since it would provide novel disconnections in retrosynthetic analysis. Collaborations between many experimental and computational groups have led to rapid developments of new C-H functionalization methods. Our groups represent an example of this; we were brought together as part of the NSF-supported Center for Selective C-H Functionalization. Many examples of experimental-computational synergy for selective Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H activation of aryl and alkyl groups are described in this Account. We describe computations by the Houk group made in response to experimental stimuli by the Yu group. The first section discusses the experimental and computational investigations of oxazoline-directed stereoselective Pd(II)-catalyzed C(sp3)-H bond activation that occurs through the concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) pathway involving a monomeric Pd(II) complex. The second section involves two types of bidentate ligands, mono-N-protected amino acid (MPAA) and acetyl-protected aminoethyl quinoline (APAQ) ligands that promote the C-H activation reactions with the ligand as the internal base. In the MPAA-assisted remote C-H bond activation, the basic dianionic amidate ligand participates in the deprotonation of a specific C-H bond. This mechanism accounts for the improved reactivity and selectivity in C-H activation reactions with MPAA ligands. The chiral APAQ ligands enable asymmetric palladium insertion into prochiral C-H bonds on a single methylene carbon center. The dianionic amidate of the APAQ ligand acts as an intramolecular base to deprotonate the methylene C-H asymmetrically and facilitate chiral Pd-C bond formation. The origins of the dramatic differences of five-membered (relatively inactive) and six-membered (highly active) chelation in β-methylene C(sp3)-H activation reactions by a Pd(II) catalyst were explained with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This is mainly due to the steric repulsions between the ArF group of the substrate and the quinoline group of the ligand. The steric repulsion between the ArF group of the substrate and the quinoline group of the APAQ ligand destabilizes the five-membered chelate transition structure, increasing the energy of the transition state. The third section discusses a mechanism involving a Pd-Ag heterodimeric complex intermediate in the template-directed, Pd(II)-catalyzed remote meta functionalization of toluene derivatives and benzoic acid derivatives. The nitrile directing group of the template coordinates with Ag while the Pd is placed adjacent to the meta-C-H bond in the transition state, leading to the observed high meta selectivity. The selective activation of remote meta-C-H bonds at various distances can be achieved by tuning the template. The dual role of AgOAc as both an oxidant and part of the heteronuclear active species in the mechanism involving PdAg(OAc)3 was determined by DFT calculations and is in accord with literature information about complexes. For the systems discussed in these three sections, the similarity is that they all proceed via the CMD mechanism. The differences lie in the proton acceptors and the active Pd species. Common CMD involves a monomeric Pd mechanism with acetate as the proton acceptor. Both MPAA and APAQ ligands react via monomeric Pd mechanisms with a ligand moiety (the amidate oxygen) as the proton acceptor. Nitrile-containing template-mediated meta-C-H activations proceed via a Pd-Ag heterodimeric mechanism, still with acetate as the proton acceptor. The interaction between our two groups, experts in experiment and computation, and the discoveries made possible by that interplay are highlighted in this Account.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:A rapid and practical protocol for the chemoselective deoxygenation of various aromatic ketones and aldehydes was described, which used a tandem catalyst composed of heterogeneous Pd/TiO2 + homogeneous FeCl3 with the green hydrogen source, polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS). The developed catalytic system was robust and scalable, as exemplified by the deoxygenation of acetophenone, which was performed on a gram scale in an atmospheric environment utilizing only 0.4 mol % Pd/TiO2 + 10 mol % FeCl3 catalyst to give the corresponding ethylbenzene in 96% yield within 10 min at room temperature. Furthermore, the Pd/TiO2 catalyst was shown to be recyclable up to three times without an observable decrease in efficiency and it exhibited low metal leaching under the reaction conditions. Insights toward the reaction mechanism of Pd-catalyzed reductive deoxygenation for aromatic ketones and aldehydes were investigated through operando IR, NMR, and GC-MS techniques.

Abstract:We report here an asymmetric carboxylation reaction based on kinetic resolution of tertiary propargylic alcohols by identifying Pd((R)-DTBM-SEGphos)Cl2 as the pre-catalyst. A variety of optically active tertiary propargylic alcohols and tetrasubstituted 2,3-allenoic acids were obtained in good yields with excellent enantioselectivities. The salient features of this report include the use of readily available substrates, a readily available precatalyst, mild reaction conditions, remarkable functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, and versatile synthetic transformations. Mass spectrometry experiments trapped some key intermediates, which revealed the mechanism.

Abstract:(Poly)halogenated arenes are important electrophiles in organic synthesis but often also toxic and harmful to human health and the environment. Hydrodehalogenation represents a powerful method for detoxification, but usually requires harsh reaction conditions. Here we report on the hydrodehalogenation of a series of chloro- and polyhalogenated compounds at mild reaction conditions using palladium complexes with ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) as ligands. The dehalogenation is accomplished with ethanol as hydride source in MeTHF, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs) extracted from construction dust. In addition, the haloarenes cannot only be detoxified but also applied in site-selective deuterations under the same reaction conditions by simply switching to deuteroethanol.

Abstract:This study presents a novel class of pseudohomogeneous catalysts (PHC) based on carbon quantum dots functionalized with terpyridine ligands (CQDs-Tpy) to immobilize and stabilize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs). Extensive characterization techniques clearly confirmed the successful stabilization of Pd NPs on CQDs-Tpy. The effectiveness of the catalyst was demonstrated in the selective aerobic oxidation of primary and secondary of benzylic alcohols to aldehydes in the absence of additives and phase transfer catalyst (PTC). Remarkably, the reactions predominantly yielded aldehydes without further oxidation to carboxylic acids. By employing low catalyst loadings (0.13 mol%), high conversions (up to 89%) and excellent selectivity (> 99%) of the aldehyde derivatives were achieved. Moreover, the CQDs-Tpy/Pd NPs catalyst displayed suitable catalytic activity and recyclability, offering potential economic advantages. This promising approach opens up new opportunities in the field of catalysis for designing subnanometric metal-based PHCs.

Abstract:Phenols are pivotal precursors and core motifs for various fine chemicals, bioactive molecules, and functional materials, among which the site-selective syntheses of ortho- substituted phenols are very attractive and challenging. Here, we present a palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenation-coupling-aroma-tization protocol to access ortho-substituted phenols from cyclohexanols with primary alcohols. Broad substrate scope was achieved in this modular protocol with water and hydrogen gas as clean byproducts. The ortho-mono-and ortho-disubstitutions were readily controlled by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands and the amount of base.
