Abstract:Homogeneous chiral catalysts usually show higher catalytic activities than corresponding heterogeneous chiral catalysts, because of their easy interaction between catalytically active sites with reactant molecules. We demonstrate here superhydrophobic, chiral, and mesoporous catalysts (TsDPEN-Ru) synthesized from copolymerization of N-p-styrenesulfonyl-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine (V-TsDPEN) with divinylbenzene and loading of Ru species exhibiting much higher activities in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of ketones in aqueous solution than corresponding homogeneous chiral catalyst. This phenomenon is strongly related to the unique features of high enrichment for the reactants in superhydrophobic TsDPEN-Ru catalysts due to their good wettability, as well as easy transfer of product from the catalyst into water phase. Abstract:A heterogeneous catalyst of Ir(I)-9-amino epi-cinchonine complex immobilized on the surface of mesoporous SBA-15 was firstly synthesized and used in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones. Enhanced enantioselectivity compared with homogeneous catalyst was obtained at room temperature. Furthermore, the heterogeneous system with very low leaching of iridium can be easily regenerated.

Abstract:Ru-TsDPEN (TsDPEN=N-(p-tolylsulfonyl)-1,2-diphenylethylenediamine) catalyzed asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones in emulsions is reported for the first time. The new protocol provides markedly enhanced activity and enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) as compared with results when performed either in an aqueous medium or in common organic solvents.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of densely functionalized diheteroaryl and diaryl ketones was developed using Ru-catalysts of minimal stereogenicity. Various ketone substrates with structurally and electronically similar groups attached to the prochiral centers were reduced successfully in good to excellent enantioselectivities and yields. Abstract:The Noyori catalyst RuCl2(R-Binap)(dmf)(n) has been successfully encapsulated in C-FDU-12 by using the active chlorosilane Ph2Cl2Si as the silylating agent. P-31-NMR results show that there is no strong interaction between the molecular catalyst and the solid support, thus the encapsulated molecular catalyst could move freely in the nanoreactor during the catalytic process. The solid catalyst exhibits high activity and enantioselectivity for the asymmetric hydrogenation of a series of beta-keto esters due to the preserved intrinsic properties of RuCl2(R-Binap)(dmf)(n) encapsulated in the nanoreactor. The solid catalyst could be recycled by simple filtration and be reused at least four times.

Abstract:In this study, non-ionic surfactants, namely Synperonic®F108 and Tween®F108 were used as mediums to dissolve; [RuCl(p-cymene)[(R,R)-Ts-DPEN] for the dosage delivery and recycling of chiral ruthenium catalyst in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reactions of ketones in water. The non-ionic surfactant-based catalytic systems bearing ruthenium catalyst in microgram scale can be used directly to conduct transfer hydrogenation reactions in nano-sized micelle structures (60-90 nm) in water under an air atmosphere. The micellar catalyst in the aqueous phase can be recycled from the reaction mixture and can be used up to 8th turn in asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reactions of acetophenone.

Abstract:Chiral aromatic alcohols with unique structures have attracted wide attention in asymmetric catalysis for decades. In this study, polymeric micelles with chiral diamine-Ru(II) catalysts in the hydrophobic core for asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of ketones affording chiral aromatic alcohols were presented. Firstly, block copolymers with (1R,2R)-(+)-1,2-diphenyl ethylenediamine (DPEN) in the pendant chain were successfully synthesized by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) using 1,1-dimethyl ethyl N-(2-amino-1,2-diphenylethyl) carbamate (NB-DPEN-Boc) and polyethylene glycol (NB-PEG 2000 ) with norbornene groups as raw materials. The structures of block copolymers P(DPEN) -co- P(PEG 2000 ) were characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR. Next, Block copolymers with chiral DPEN ligand in the pendant chain coordinate with [RuCl 2 (p-cymene)] 2 to provide amphiphilic polymers with chiral diamine-Ru(II) catalyst. Then, the self-assembly of the amphiphilic polymers in water produced the polymeric micelles with chiral diamine-Ru(II) catalysts in the hydrophobic core. The particle sizes were found to be 65 nm by DLS analysis. The polymeric micelles as catalytic nanoreactors were successfully applied in the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation (ATH) of various ketones in water. The heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts and construction of catalysts for aqueous catalysis demonstrate potential application prospects in the preparation of chiral aromatic alcohols.

Abstract:Heterogeneous Pd-containing nanocatalysts, based on poly (propylene imine) dendrimers immobilized in silica pores and networks, obtained by co-hydrolysis in situ, have been synthesized and examined in the hydrogenation of various unsaturated compounds. The catalyst activity and selectivity were found to strongly depend on the carrier structure as well as on the substrate electron and geometric features. Thus, mesoporous catalyst, synthesized in presence of both polymeric template and tetraethoxysilane, revealed the maximum activity in the hydrogenation of various styrenes, including bulky and rigid stilbene and its isomers, reaching TOF values of about 230000 h-1. Other mesoporous catalyst, synthesized in the presence of polymeric template, but without addition of Si(OEt)4, provided the trans-cyclooctene formation with the selectivity of 90-95 %, appearing as similar to homogeneous dendrimer-based catalysts. Microporous catalyst, obtained only on the presence of Si(OEt)4, while dendrimer molecules acting as both anchored ligands and template, demonstrated the maximum activity in the hydrogenation of terminal linear alkynes and conjugated dienes, reaching TOF values up to 400000 h-1. Herein the total selectivity on alkene in the case of terminal alkynes and conjugated dienes reached 95-99 % even at hydrogen pressure of 30 atm. The catalysts synthesized can be easily isolated from reaction products and recycled without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:A soluble polymer (MeO-PEG) supported biphenylbisphosphine (BIPHEP)-Ru/chiral diamine (1,2-diphenylethylenediamine) complex, in which the polymer is attached to the two phenyl rings of BIPHEP ligand, has been prepared, and shown to be highly active with good enantioselectivity for the catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of unfunctionalized aromatic ketones. The derived chiral ruthenium complex 5 proved to be stable in air allowing facile catalyst recycling. Especially for 4′-tert-butyl-acetophenone and 1-acetonaphthone, excellent ee values up to 96.5% and 95.9% have been obtained which are comparable to or even higher than the enantioselectivity achieved with 2,2′-bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1′-binaphthyl-Ru-DPEN catalyst under similar conditions.

Abstract:In the presence of the inexpensive and non-toxic stoichiometric reductant polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS), the chiral copper(II)-dipyridylphosphine catalyst displayed high efficiency in the stereoselective hydrosilylation of a wide scope of aryl alkyl and heteroaromatic ketones under an air atmosphere and mild conditions in good to excellent ees (up to 97%). With certain amounts of sodium tert-butoxide and tert-butyl alcohol as additives, the reaction on a 21-g substrate scale can be conveniently completed within a few hours even at a substrate-to-ligand (S/L) ratio of 50,000.

Abstract:A concise asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of diaryl ketones, promoted by bifunctional Ru complexes with an etherial linkage between 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine (DPEN) and η(6)-arene ligands, was successfully developed. Because of the effective discrimination of substituents at the ortho position on the aryl group, unsymmetrical benzophenones were smoothly reduced in a 5:2 mixture of formic acid and triethylamine with an unprecedented level of excellent enantioselectivity. For the non-ortho-substituted benzophenones, the oxo-tethered catalyst electronically discerned biased substrates, resulting in attractive performance yielding chiral diarylmethanols with >99% ee.

Abstract:Homogeneous noble metal catalysts used in alkene hydrosilylation reactions to manufacture organosilicon compounds commercially often suffer from difficulties in catalyst recovering and recycling, undesired disproportionation reactions, and energy-intensive purification of products. Herein, we report a heterogeneous 0.5Ruδ+/ZrO2 catalyst with partially charged single-atom Ru (0.5 wt.% Ru) supported on commercial ZrO2 nanocrystals synthesized by the simple impregnation method followed by H2 reduction. When used in the ethylene hydrosilylation with triethoxysilane to produce the desired ethyltriethoxysilane, 0.5Ruδ+/ZrO2 showed excellent catalytic performance with the maximum Ru atom utilization and good recyclability, even superior to homogeneous catalyst (RuCl3·H2O). Structural characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal the atomic dispersion of the active Ru species and their unique electronic properties distinct from the homogeneous catalyst. The reaction route over this catalyst is supposed to follow the typical Chalk—Harrod mechanism. This highly efficient and supported single-atom Ru catalyst has the potential to replace the current homogeneous catalyst for a greener hydrosilylation industry.

Abstract:A method for the HMPA (hexamethylphosphoric triamide)-catalyzed metal-free transfer hydrogenation of pyridines has been developed. The functional group tolerance of the existing reaction conditions provides easy access to various piperidines with ester or ketone groups at the C-3 site. The suitability of this method for the reduction of other N-heteroarenes has also been demonstrated. Thirty-three examples of different substrates have been reduced to designed products with 45–96% yields.
