Abstract:Materials with skutterudite structure possess attractive thermoelectric properties. In this study, ternary skutterudite compound Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3 has been successfully synthesized at 240°C for 48h by a solvothermal method. It is found that diantimonides MSb2 (M=Fe, Ni) occur in the early stage of synthesis and then combine with antimony atoms to form the skutterudite triantimonide, Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3. The synthesized Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3 powders consist of irregular granules with an average particle size of about 50nm. Transport measurements show that the unfilled ternary Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3 skutterudite possesses metallic electrical properties.

Abstract:Nanostructured skutterudite-related compound Fe 0.25 Ni 0.25 Co 0.5 Sb 3 was synthesized by a solvothermal method using FeCl 3 , NiCl 2 , CoCl 2 , and SbCl 3 as the precursors and NaBH 4 as the reductant. The solvothermally synthesized powders consisted of fine granules with an average particle size of tens of nanometers. The bulk material was prepared by hot pressing the powders. Transport property measurements indicated a heavily doped semiconductor behavior with n-type conduction. The thermal conductivity is about 1.83 W·m −1 ·K −1 at room temperature and decreases to 1.57 W·m −1 ·K −1 at 673 K. The low thermal conductivity is attributed to small grain size and high porosity. A maximum dimensionless figure of merit of 0.15 is obtained at 673 K.

Abstract:Nanostructures enhance phonon scattering and improve the figure of merit of thermoelectric materials. Nanosized CoSb 3 skutterudite was synthesized by solvothermal methods using CoCl 2 and SbCl 3 as the precursors. A “two-step” model was suggested for the formation of CoSb 3 based on the X-ray diffraction analysis. The first step is the formation of cobalt diantimonide in the earlier stage during the synthesis process. Diantimonide was then combined with antimony atoms to form the skutterudite structured triantimonide, CoSb 3 , in the later stage of the synthesis process as the second step. The synthesized CoSb 3 powders consist of irregular particles with sizes of about 20 nm and sheets of about 80 nm.

Abstract:Nanostructuring is one of the effective approaches to lower the thermal conductivity of materials. Nanostructured skutterudite-related compounds CoSb3, Fe0.5Ni0.5Sb3, Fe0.25Ni0.25Co0.5Sb3 and Te-doped CoSb3 were synthesized by a solvothermal route. The bulk materials were prepared by hot pressing or spark plasma sintering from the solvothermally synthesized nanopowders. The thermal conductivity values of the materials are decreased, which is mainly contributed to the small grain sizes and the high porosity. A thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.61 has been obtained for CoSb3, which is notably high for the unfilled skutterudites. Filled skutterudites La0.3Co4Sb12 and La0.3FeCo3Sb12 were also synthesized by solvothermally process followed by annealing under hydrogen atmosphere. The thermoelectric properties are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Thermoelectric properties of nanostructured skutterudite CoSb3 have been reported. Nanosized CoSb3 powders were synthesized through a solvothermal route. The bulk materials with average grain sizes of 250 and 150nm were prepared by hot pressing and spark plasma sintering from the solvothermally synthesized CoSb3 powders. Both the samples show n-type conduction and the thermal conductivities are reduced compared with that of the sample prepared by the melt-annealing∕hot pressing method. A thermoelectric figure of merit of 0.61 has been obtained for the unfilled CoSb3 skutterudite by spark plasma sintering, which indicates that nanostructuring is an effective way to improve the thermoelectric properties of skutterudite compounds.

Abstract:CoSb3-based filled skutterudite has emerged as one of the most viable candidates for thermoelectric applications in automotive industry. However, the scale-up commercialization of such materials is still a challenge due to the scarcity and cost of constituent elements. Here we study Ce, the most earth abundant and low-cost rare earth element as a single-filling element and demonstrate that, by solubility design using a phase diagram approach, the filling fraction limit (FFL) x in CexCo4Sb12 can be increased more than twice the amount reported previously (x=0.09). This ultra-high FFL (x=0.20) enables the optimization of carrier concentration such that no additional filling elements are needed to produce a state of the art n-type skutterudite material with a zT value of 1.3 at 850 K before nano-structuring. The earth abundance and low cost of Ce would potentially facilitate a widespread application of skutterudites.

Abstract:This paper reports on the synthesis of the nanocrystalline FeS2 via a solvent-thermal process. Using FeSO4 and NH2CSNH2 as precursors and polyvinyl-pyrrolidone (PVP) as a protective agent (dispersant), we have successfully synthesized nanocrystalline FeS2 both under acidic conditions (pH = 5) and under alkali conditions (pH = 10) at various temperatures and for different time in alcohol-water solution. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Ultraviolet Visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy were used to characterize the morphology, structure, particle size and optical characterization of sample synthesized under acidic condition, and the XRD pattern was refined by Rietveld method. The experimental result shows that nanocrystalline FeS2 with uniform size, highly crystallized quality and excellent dispersivity has been synthesized at 200 for 36 h.

Abstract:Cu2 MoS4 nanosheets are synthesized by a solvothermal method in which the Cu2 O starting material acts as a sacrificial template. The microstructure of the Cu2 MoS4 nanosheets is characterized at the atomic level, and the growth mechanism is monitored at the nanoscale through systematic time-dependent experiments. As a result, the unprecedented observation of the allotropic phase change in Cu2 MoS4 that occurs during the solvothermal process is possible.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSbS2 and Ag3SbS3 by the reactions between CuI and AgNO3 with SbCl3 and elemental sulfur in ethylenediamine at 140°C for 12 h, respectively. XRD, TEM and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology and purity of the products, respectively. Ethylenediamine played important roles in the formation of the ternary sulfides. A possible mechanism is proposed and expected to explain similar reactions.

Abstract:Monodisperse cubic pyrite NiS2 dodecahedrons and microspheres with a diameter of 6 mu m have been synthesized by a solvothermal approach in ethylenediamine-glycol mixed solvent at 200 degrees C using NiCl2 center dot 6H(2)O and sulfur as precursors. The morphology and the phase transformation of the products were found to be strongly dependent on the reaction temperature, reaction time, and the volume ratio of ethylenediamine to glycol. The thermal stability of the pyrite NiS2 dodecahedrons has been studied and they can act as excellent templates for synthesis of porous NiO microspheres by calcination in air. The NiS2 dodecahedrons show antiferromagnetic properties between 10 and 300 K. The present solvothermal approach in a mixed solvent system may allow to synthesize other metal chalcogenides with unique shapes and structures.

Abstract:The monodispersed Fe3O4 nano-powders were synthesized via solvothermal reaction of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O and KOH in ethylene glycol agent.XRD and TEM were employed to characterize the phase and morphology of the synthesized Fe3O4 nanopowders,and Physical Property Measurement system(PPMS) was used to investigate the magnetic property of the synthesized Fe3O4 nanopowders,respectively.The results show that the Fe3O4 nanopowders synthesized below the temperature of 220 ℃ are of lesser particles in size of about 10 nm and of superparamagnetic property,whereas,the Fe3O4 nanopowders synthesized at 250 ℃ are of larger particles in size of about 50 nm and of typical ferromagnetic property.The saturation magnetization and coercive field for the Fe3O4 nanopowders synthesized at 250 ℃ are 68.8 emμ·g-1,12.9 emμ·g-1,138.5 Oe,respectively,which all overmatch the hydrothermally synthesized Fe3O4 nanopowders.Based on the experimental resuts,the formation mechanism and well monodispersed reason of the solvthersized Fe3O4 nanopowders are discussed.

Abstract:5 nm thiospinel FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines were prepared through a solvothermal process at 280 °C. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveal that the product was nanocrystalline FeIn2S4, with cubic cell, and uniform spherical particle morphology. The factors to the formation of uniform FeIn2S4 nanocrystallines with a narrow size distribution were discussed also.

Abstract:One-dimensional nanocrystalline FeS2 has been prepared in ethylenediamine. Much different from other materials, such as CdE (E=S, Se, Te) with hexagonal structure, FeS2 is in cubic structure. The as-prepared FeS2 powders display rodlike morphology with diameters of 20–50 nm and lengths of up to 1000 nm. The morphology control by choosing different solvents is also discussed.

Abstract:Utilizing the polyol process to produce ternary or multinary phases is a challenge due to the different redox potentials of the components. We succeeded in synthesizing compounds in the composition range Ni4–δ(SbxTe1–x)6 (–0.20 ≤ δ ≤ 0.36, 0.13 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) by heating a basic ethylene glycol solution containing nickel(II) acetate, antimony(III) acetate, and ammonium tellurate(VI) in a microwave at 280 °C for 25 min without adding auxiliary reducing agents. The products consist of thin nano‐platelets, which can be transformed into larger crystals by annealing. Single crystal X‐ray diffraction revealed a new structure type for the composition Ni4–δ(Sb0.25Te0.75)6 (x = 0.25) in the space group P‐3m1 with a = 3.897(1) Å and c = 15.701(1) Å. The triple superstructure of the NiAs type is due to a complex concentration profile of the Ni atoms in the octahedral voids. The trigonal TlCdS2 type is found for lower Sb contents (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.20), while for higher Sb content (x ≥ 0.28) the hexagonal Ni2SbTe2 type is adopted, which both are ordering variants of the NiAs type. Ni4–δ(Sb0.25Te0.75)6 is paramagnetic and exhibits poor metallic conductivity in the temperature range 6 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K.

Abstract:Bi_2Te_3 nanocrystals with different morphologies including nanoparticles,nanorods and nanosheets were synthesized via a solvothermal process with surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate(SDS) in hydrazine hydrate at 180℃ for 10h.The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),transmission electron spectroscopy(TEM),energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy(EDS).The influences of surfanctant amount and temperature on morphology of products were discussed.A possible formation mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:The CoS nanocrystals were synthesized by a solvethermal method,using Co(NO3)2-6H2O and thiourea as raw materials.Composition,particle size and surface morphology of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The results show that the as-prepared material are CoS nanoparticles at 180 ℃,witch diameter is about 40 nm.Powder production rate increases with increasing temperature,when the reaction temperature rises to 180 ℃,the yield close to 60%.When temperature further increases to 200 ℃,the yield remains unchanged,but abnormal grain growth happened.Addition of dispersant PEG can effectively control the size of the particles and inhibit the reunite of products.In additions,higher degree of crystallinity of the CoS nanocrystals can be synthesized by reducing the content of organic solvent EG,but it is not beneficial to control powder particle size,because the reaction rate is too fast.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline SnTe with different morphologies was synthesized by a solvothermal process based on the reaction between SnCl2, Te, KOH and KBH4 in N,N-dimethylfonnamide (DMF) at 100degreesC-180degreesC. KBH4 was used as a reducing agent. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The particle morphologies and sizes are dependent on the reaction temperature and time. A possible formation mechanism is proposed.
