Abstract:The synthesis of (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl)quinoline involves an acid catalysed condensation of 2-methylquinoline and 4-bromobenzaldehyde. (E)-4'-[(2-(Quinolin-2-yl)vinyl)]-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-carbaldehyde has been synthesised from (E)-2-(4-bromostyryl) quinoline and 4-formylphenylboronic acid via a Suzuki coupling reaction. A series of novel quinoline derivatives containing both a biphenyl group and an alpha, beta-diarylacrylonitrile unit have been prepared by the base-catalysed condensation between (E)-4'-[(2-(quinolin-2-yl)vinyl)]-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-carbaldehyde and various arylacetonitriles. By contrast, the acid-catalysed condensation of the latter aldehyde with several aniline derivatives has been used to synthesise quinolines containing an imine group. These compounds, which have implications for the manufacture of organic light-emitting diodes, emit blue to green fluorescence with maximum emission peaks of 419-531 nm in solution and in the solid state under UV irradiation. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals their good thermal stability with a decomposition temperature range from 313 to 387 degrees C.

Abstract:Four new ethynyl-based conjugated oligo-phenylene-ethynylenes derivatives(1～4) with terminal amine were synthesized by Sonogashira or Eglinton cross-coupling reaction of terminal p-ethynylene-aniline with aryl iodine. The structures were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,IR and MS. The UV and fluorescence spectra showed that 1～4 exihibited favorable optical property in which 1,4-bis(4-aminophenylethynyl)benzene(2) and 1,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenylethynyl)phenyl]acetylene(4) possessed good FL intensity even being diluted to 10-7 mol·L-1. 2 showed a pair of inreversible redox peaks around 0.8 V in cyclic voltammetry,and colored polymorized films on the electrode surface can be obtained after many cycles.

Abstract:The maximum absorption wavelengths (λa-max), absorption coefficient (ε), maximum emission wavelengths (λe-max), fluorescent quantum yields (φf), and second-order nonlinear polarizations (βxxx) of seventeen 4,4′-bis-(2-(substituted-styryl))biphenyl and three 1,4-bis-(2-(substituted-styryl))benzene were measured. The results showed that some of this series of compounds possess high fluorescent quantum yields in DMF, such as, 2 (0.801), 3 (0.680), 5 (0.565), 15 (0.538) 16 (0.848), 18 (2.175), 19 (1.314) and 20 (1.060), as compared with quinine-sulfuric acid. They could be used as fluorescent whiteners and fluorescent colorants. Some of these compounds were of a high βxxx values, such as in DMSO, 2 (29.00/10−30 m5c−1), 3 (25.29/10−30 m5c−1), 8 (21.79/10−30 m5c−1) and 9 (24.08/10−30 m5c−1). Electron-withdrawing substituent NO2, which is attached to the two terminal phenyl rings could cause λa-max obviously to be shorter, but it made λe-max change longer. Electron-donating substituent at two end benzene rings, such as OCH3, N((CH3)2), even Cl, could make λa-max and λe-max longer, and the larger the electron-donating ability of the substituent, the longer the λa-max and λe-max. This influence of 4-position substituent on λa-max or λe-max is obviously larger than that of 2-position substituent, and the action of substituent on 2-position is larger than that of substituent on 3-position. The values of λa-max and λe-max of biphenyl compounds 2 or 3 were respectively close to these values of corresponding benzene compounds 18 or 19.

Abstract:Using thienyl stannane and palladium-catalyzed (Stille coupling), 1,4-di(5’-carbaldehyde-thiophen-2’-yl)-2,5-dioctyloxy-benzene was synthesized by four steps, the structure was determined by NMR, IR and elemental analysis. The UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties were measured. The absorption bands correspond to π-π transition with the peak at 413 nm in chloroform solution, the compound exhibited an emissive peak at 477 nm and 504 nm in chloroform solution and solid state respectively.

Abstract:Acid‐catalysed Friedländer cyclization of 2‐aminobenzophenones with 1,2‐, 1,3‐, and 1,4‐cyclohexadiones, followed by aromatization, has been used to prepare dibenzophenanthrolines (DBPs) containing 1,10‐, 1,7‐ and 4,7‐phenanthroline units, whose optoelectronic properties have been compared. The LUMO energies for all isomers were similar but the 4,7‐isomers possessed significantly higher HOMOs than the other isomers, resulting in them having smaller HOMO‐LUMO energy gaps. Compared with 1,10‐DBP isomers, the emission of 1,7‐DBPs is strongly quenched due to efficient charge transfer. The 4,7‐DBP isomers show strongly enhanced photoluminescence due to excimer formation but appear to be less photostable due to their higher HOMO levels. Bis(phenylethynyl)‐substituted derivatives demonstrated improved solubility and stronger luminescence properties than their unsubstituted analogues.
Study on Synthesis and Photoluminescence Performance of Biphenyl Substituted Polythiophene Derivatives

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of aromatic group in side-chain on the luminescence performance of polythiophene derivatives, a reactive monomer of 3-biphenylthiophene was prepared by coupling 3-bromothiophene with biphenyl bromide, then the monomer was polymerized by oxidation coupling polymerization of 3-biphenylthiophene using iron (III) chloride as catalyst in chloroform. The produced poly(3-biphenyl) thiophene (PBPTH) were characterized by infrared spectrum, UV-vis absorption spectrum and 1H NMR. The maximum peak in UV-vis spectrum of PBPTH is at 406 nm, the blue-shift is 34 nm comparing with that of poly(3-octyl) thiophene (P3OT, the maximum peak is about 440 nm). Furthermore, the photoluminescence peak of PBPTH locates at 547 nm, the blue-shift is about 32 nm related to P3OT. Research results show that the blue-shifts in UV-vis spectrum and photoluminescence (PL) spectrum are formed by the steric hindrance of biphenyl group, which decreases the effective conjugating length of PBPTH. The PL intensity of PBPTH solution is decreased greatly related to P3OT, which imply that the biphenyl group cannot compensate enough for the loss of the effective conjugating length to the PL performance.

Abstract:4-Bromothiophene-2-carbaldehyde was reacted with benzyl cyanide to prepare (Z)-3-(4-bromothiophen-2-yl)-2-phenylacrylonitrile which was cross-coupled with various arylboronic acids under Pd(PPh(3))(4) catalysis to afford a series of novel fluorescent aryl-substituted thiophene derivatives. These compounds are one of the most promising functional organic light-emitting diode materials. The UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescent spectra of these compounds in CH(2)Cl(2) were investigated.

Abstract:The synthesis, luminescence and electrochemical properties of two novel phenothiazine derivatives were presented, which exhibit good one-photon fluorescence emission. The quantum yields and solvent effects of them were studied in detail. Compound 3,7-bis(2-4'-imidazolylbenzylidenehydrazonoethyl)-(O-ethylphenothiazine) (5) was used as an effective initiator, of which two-photon fluorescence spectra were investigated under 800 nm fs laser pulse and the measured two-photon absorption cross-section was 18 X 10(-50) cm4 circle s per photon. Two-photon initiated polymerization microfabrication experiments were carried out. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the shape of the compound 3,7-bis(2-pyrid-4'-ylmethylidenehydrazonoethyl)-(O-ethylphenothiazine) (4) looks like a butterfly with nearly planar wings. The dihedral angle of the two benzene rings is 37.6 degrees and there is an obvious pi-pi stacking interaction between the molecules in the crystal.

Abstract:A series of π-conjugated compounds with biphenyl chromophore were synthesized from 4,4'-bis(diethoxy phosphonomethyl)-diphenyl and aromatic aldehydes(or cinnamaldehyde) by Wittig-Horner reaction with alkali-assisted catalysis in DMF solution.MS,proton NMR or element analysis experiments were carried out for characterizing the structures of the synthesized products,and the ultraviolet absorption spectrometry,emission spectrometry and fluorescence spectrophotometry techniques were used for checking their spectra properties.As a result,the photoluminescence study displays that the so-prepared compounds have potential application as blue luminescence materials.

Abstract:Seven multi-dipole and multibranched benzene-linked bispyrimidine derivatives containing a two-layer binary tree structure with different electron donor and acceptor groups were designed, synthesized, and characterized. The influences of substituents and solvents on the optical properties of the compounds were investigated. The UV/vis absorption (lambda(em)(max): 311-371nm), PL emission (lambda(abs)(max): 386-527 nm), stokes shift (2864-6414 cm(-1)), and fluorescence quantum yield (Phi(f): 0.01 similar to 0.16) of the compounds in CH3CN solution are influenced by the electron-donor or accept substituents. The absorption and emission spectra of the compound with the highest Phi(f) in various solvents indicate that the solvent has little influence on absorption spectrum but does influence the emission spectrum. Transient absorption spectra exhibiting strong positive absorption bands in the near-IR wavelength means that these compounds could potentially be used as optical limiting materials, which is further confirmed by the quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract:Two novel 1,2,4,5-tetrasubstituted benzene,1,2,4,5-tetra(4-N,N-diphenylaminostyryl)benzene(TDASB) and 1,2,4,5-tetra(4-N,N-di(4″-bromophenyl) aminostyryl)benzene (TDBSB),were synthesized through Wittig-Horner reactions. Their structures were characterized by IR,NMR,MS,and melting points. The maximum Absorption peaks in dichloromethane were at 400nm for TDASB and 396nm for TDBSB,respectively. The maximum emission wavelengths were at 493nm for TDASB and 491nm for TDBSB in dichloromethane,respectively. The fluorescence lifetime were 1.7022,3.633ns for TDASB and 1.2810,4.8473ns for TDBSB. The relationship of Stokes shift with solvent polarity was discussed.

Abstract:A novel method to synthesize 2,6-bis(p-aminophenyl)benzo[1,2-d;5,4-d′]bisoxazole using 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene as the starting material through nitration, substitution, hydrogenation, and condensation was reported. During the condensation, the influence of the amount of SnCl 2 on the yield of the product was studied. The electron spectra of the compound were discussed, the results showed that it is a fluorescence material with large Stokes shift.

Abstract:An important intermediate for making electroluminescent materials,namely,5-bromo-1,3-Bis[(2-phenyl)-5-(4′-methoxy-phenyl)]-1,3,4-oxadiazole,was synthesized by using 5-amino-1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid and 4-methoxy benzoyl hydrazine as raw materials and undergoing a serial of reactions,such as diazotization,acylchloride,diarylhydrazide and dehydration.The yield of the dehydrated reaction was 53.2%.Its structure was characterized with IR,1 H NNR. The influences of reactive conditions on the synthesis,UV spectrum and the fluorescence properties were investigated.The result shows that the CH3Cl solution of this compound had a maximum UV absorption wavelength of 307 nm and a peak fluorescent wavelength of 376 nm.

Abstract:Poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBZT) and a series of new derivatives, poly(benzobisthiazole-1,4-diphenylene etherylene) (PBTPE), poly(bisbenzothiazole-2,2’-phenelyene-6,6’-(4-tert-butyl)cyclohexylidene) (PBTPBCH) and poly(bisbenzothiazole-2,2’-phenelyene etherylene-6,6’-(4-tert-butyl)cyclohexylidene) (PBTPEBCH), were synthesized by polycondensation of 2,5-diamino-1,4-benzenedithiol dihydrochloride (DABDT·2HCl) or 1,1-bis(4-amino-3-mercaptophenyl)-4-tert-butylcyclohexane dihydrochloride (BAMPBCH·2HCl) with terephthalic acid or 4,4’-dicarboxydiphenyl ether in poly (phosphoric acid) (PPA). The inherent viscosity, thermal stability, solubility, morphology and photophysical properties of them were investigated and compared in detail. The introduction of etherylene or 4-tert-butylcyclohexylidene both decreased the inherent viscosity of PBZT. Although the decomposition temperatures of these derivatives were lower than PBZT, they still had good thermal stability. In addition, the thermogravimetric analysis showed PBTPBCH and PBTPEBCH containing 4-tert-butylcyclohexylidene had the lower thermal stability than PBTPE containing etherylene. The solubility of them was all enhanced. Especially, PBTPBCH and PBTPEBCH showed better solubility. X-ray diffractograms of all the derivatives showed that they were amorphous. Compared with PBZT, the absorption maximum (λmax) of all the derivatives prepared was blue shifted in different degree according to their structure respectively. The excitation and emission peaks were also blue shifted. Furthermore, both of the substituting groups incorporated into the polymer backbone could improve the photoluminescence quantum yield to a certain extent. Finally we established the structure-property relationships of this class of poly(benzothiazole)s by investigating and comparing these properties in detail.

Abstract:A series of new 4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine compounds bearing different aryl substituents (Ar=phenyl (1a), 2,4-difluorophenyl (1b), 4-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl (1c), 4-methoxyphenyl (1d), 9-hexyl-9H-carbazolyl (1e), 9,9-dihexyl-9H-fluorenyl (1f), 4-(diphenylamino)phenyl (1g)) were synthesized and characterized. The influence of the aryl substituents on the luminescence of these compounds is systematically investigated by spectroscopic methods and simulated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All compounds exhibit structured absorption bands in the UV region; and broad, structureless charge-transfer bands/shoulders for 1d–1g, which systematically red-shifts when electron-donating substituents are introduced to the phenyl rings, but blue-shifts when electron-withdrawing substituents are attached on the phenyl rings. All compounds are emissive in solution at room temperature (λemmax=358–489nm, ΦF=0.16–0.92, τF=0.77–2.24ns), which can be attributed to 1π, π*/1ICT (intramolecular charge transfer) state. Their fluorescent quantum yields increases when the electron-donating aryl substituents attached on the phenyl rings. DFT calculations on 1a–1g were also performed to gain insight into the nature of the ground electronic state. As the representative of compounds with electron-donating substituents, 1f exhibited high fluorescent quantum yields (Φf≥0.90 in solvents) while the compounds with electron-withdrawing substituents showed relative low fluorescent quantum yields. Their photophysical properties have been investigated with the aim to provide a basis for elucidating the structure-property correlations and developing new blue light-emitting materials.

Abstract:A series of novel monomers of oligomers or polymers based on linear 1,4-phenylethynyl or 1,5-naphthylethynyl subunits, 1,4-bis(naphthalen-1-ylethynyl)benzene (8a) and its derivatives (8b–8i), has been synthesized and characterized. The UV absorption and fluorescence emission properties of these compounds were analyzed and discussed through the energy gap ( E ) between HOMO and LUMO orbitals, the orbital diagrams and the charge densities of related carbon atoms. It is evident from these results that the introduction of the electron-donating substituent (–OR) to the central phenylene ring of 8a and the introduction of electron-withdrawing substituent (–NO2) to the end of the conjugated system can efficiently improve its solubility, give rise to red-shift of maximum absorption and emission wavelength. But the introduction of electron-withdrawing substituent (–NO2) will lead dramatically decrease in fluorescence efficiency. The novel synthesized compounds 8b–8e have potential prospects as the monomers of oligomers or polymers based on linear 1,4-phenylethynyl or 1,5-naphthylethynyl subunits for their excellent solubility and optical properties.

Abstract:Poly[1,4-bis(4-alkyl-2-thienyl)-2,5-disubstituted phenylene]s and their monomers have been regioselectively synthesized in high yield. The head-to-head defined structures of all polymers and monomers are demonstrated by FT-IR, H-1, C-13 NMR and elemental analysis. All new materials exhibit good thermally stability, optical, electrochemical properties. Their HOMO and LUMO energy levels are determined by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis measurement. The improvement of absolute PL quantum yields of all six polymers in the solid films have been approved after the aromatic groups were introduced into the main chain of polythiophene. Three materials were chosen to be fabricated as single layer LED devices.
