Abstract:Day - Night asymmetries and electronic spectra distortions for the Super - Kamiokande detector are computed for the transition nu_e -> nu_mu(tau) and for a set of neutrino parameters. The results show the possibility to enhance up to a factor six the Day - Night asymmetry selecting neutrino events induced by neutrinos which cross the Earth core. This should increase the sensitivity of the Super - Kamiokande detector to the Day - Night effect for sin^2(2 theta_v) < 0.01 and 5 x 10^-6 eV^2 < Delta m^2 < 10^-5 eV^2.

Abstract:We propose new trigger logic for detection of (nu) over bar (e) with energy above 10 MeV, by identifying the inverse beta decay (nu) over bar (e) + p -> e(+) + n in Super Kamiokande III. This fully restored detector starts commissioning in 2006. The proposed trigger logic is intended to implement the present online system, to record the emitted 2.2 MeV gamma candidates from neutron capture in pure water without increasing much online trigger rate.

Abstract:Among multimessenger observations of the next Galactic core-collapse supernova, Super-Kamiokande (SK) plays a critical role in detecting the emitted supernova neutrinos, determining the direction to the supernova (SN), and notifying the astronomical community of these observations in advance of the optical signal. In 2022, SK has increased the gadolinium dissolved in its water target (SK-Gd) and has achieved a Gd concentration of 0.033%, resulting in enhanced neutron detection capability, which in turn enables more accurate determination of the supernova direction. Accordingly, SK-Gd's real-time supernova monitoring system has been upgraded. SK_SN Notice, a warning system that works together with this monitoring system, was released on 2021 December 13, and is available through GCN Notices. When the monitoring system detects an SN-like burst of events, SK_SN Notice will automatically distribute an alarm with the reconstructed direction to the supernova candidate within a few minutes. In this paper, we present a systematic study of SK-Gd's response to a simulated Galactic SN. Assuming a supernova situated at 10 kpc, neutrino fluxes from six supernova models are used to characterize SK-Gd's pointing accuracy using the same tools as the online monitoring system. The pointing accuracy is found to vary from 3° to 7° depending on the models. However, if the supernova is closer than 10 kpc, SK_SN Notice can issue an alarm with three-degree accuracy, which will benefit follow-up observations by optical telescopes with large fields of view.

Abstract:Exotic atom experiments place transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeter arrays in a high-energy charged particle rich environment. When a high-energy charged particle passes through the silicon substrate of a TES array, a large amount of energy is deposited and small pulses are generated across multiple pixels in the TES array due to thermal crosstalk. We have developed analysis techniques to assess and reduce the effects of charged particle events on exotic atom X-ray measurements. Using this technique, the high-energy and low-energy components of the X-ray peaks due to pileup are eliminated, improving the energy resolution from 6.6 eV to 5.7 eV at 6.9 keV.

Abstract:We propose the Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) detector as a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector. It will serve as a far detector of a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment envisioned for the upgraded J-PARC, and as a detector capable of observing -- far beyond the sensitivity of the Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) detector -- proton decays, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astronomical origins. The baseline design of Hyper-K is based on the highly successful Super-K, taking full advantage of a well-proven technology. (to be continued)

Abstract:Cosmic-ray muons that enter the Super-Kamiokande detector cause hadronic showers due to spallation in water, producing neutrons and radioactive isotopes. Those are a major background source for studies of MeV-scale neutrinos and searches for rare events. Since 2020, gadolinium was introduced in the ultra-pure water in the Super-Kamiokande detector to improve the detection efficiency of neutrons. In this study, the cosmogenic neutron yield was measured using data acquired during the period after the gadolinium loading. The yield was found to be $(2.76 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{(stat.) \pm 0.19\,\mathrm{(syst.)}}) \times 10^{-4}\,\mu^{-1} \mathrm{g^{-1} cm^{2}}$ at 259 GeV of average muon energy at the Super-Kamiokande detector.

Abstract: Radioactivity induced by cosmic muon spallation is a dominant source of backgrounds for $\mathcal{O}(10)~$MeV neutrino interactions in water Cherenkov detectors. In particular, it is crucial to reduce backgrounds to measure the solar neutrino spectrum and find neutrino interactions from distant supernovae. In this paper we introduce new techniques to locate muon-induced hadronic showers and efficiently reject spallation backgrounds. Applying these techniques to the solar neutrino analysis with an exposure of $2790\times22.5$~kton.day increases the signal efficiency by $12.6\%$, approximately corresponding to an additional year of detector running. Furthermore, we present the first spallation simulation at SK, where we model hadronic interactions using FLUKA. The agreement between the isotope yields and shower pattern in this simulation and in the data gives confidence in the accuracy of this simulation, and thus opens the door to use it to optimize muon spallation removal in new data with gadolinium-enhanced neutron capture detection.
Low Energy Investigations at Kamioka Observatory

Abstract:At Kamioka Observatory many activities for low energy rare event search are ongoing. Super-Kamiokande(SK), the largest water Cherenkov neutrino detector, currently continues data taking as the fourth phase of the experiment (SK-IV). In SK-IV, we have upgraded the water purification system and tuned water flow in the SK tank. Consequently the background level was lowered significantly. This allowed SK-IV to derive solar neutrino results down to 3.5MeV energy region. With these data, neutrino oscillation parameters are updated from global fit; $\Delta m^2_{12}=7.44^{+0.2}_{-0.19}\times10^{-5} {\rm eV}^2$, $\sin^2\theta_{12}=0.304\pm0.013$, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=0.030^{+0.017}_{-0.015}$. NEWAGE, the directional sensitive dark matter search experiment, is currently operated as "NEWAGE-0.3a" which is a $0.20\times0.25\times0.31$ m$^3$ micro-TPC filled with CF4 gas at 152 Torr. Recently we have developed "NEWAGE-0.3b". It was succeeded to lower the operation pressure down to 76 Torr and the threshold down to 50 keV (F recoils). XMASS experiment is looking for scintillation signals from dark matter interaction in 1 ton of liquid xenon. It was designed utilizing its self-shielding capability with fiducial volume confinement. However, we could lower the analysis threshold down to 0.3 keVee using whole volume of the detector. In February 2012, low threshold and very large exposure data (5591 kg$\cdot$days) were collected. With these data, we have excluded some part of the parameter spaces claimed by DAMA/LIBRA and CoGeNT experiments.

Comprehensive Study of the Possibility of Day - Night Effect Enhancement

Abstract:A set of quantitative predictions for the day-night asymmetry in the Super - Kamiokande detector is presented. For these predictions, neutrino events are collected in ``samples'' defined by the trajectories in the Earth of the corresponding solar neutrinos. The more important samples considered here are: the full sample of neutrinos detected at night, the sample of night neutrinos which cross the Earth core and the sample of night neutrinos which does not cross the Earth core. For energy integrated event rates, the day-night asymmetry for core crossing neutrinos is up to six times bigger than the day-night asymmetry for the full sample of night neutrinos. When the reduction in statistics is considered, an effective enhancement up to a factor $\approx 2.3$ is obtained. The selection of core crossing neutrinos may be relevant for the recoil - $e^-$ spectra too. From these results it is reasonable to expect the Super Kamiokande detector be able to constrain the small mixing angle solution of the solar neutrino problem ($\sin^2 2 \theta_v \leq 0.01$) through the day-night effect. Furthermore, it is proposed that the day-night effect may limits the total flux of 8B neutrino produced in the Sun. At last, the sensitivity of these predictions to the Earth model uncertainties is quantitatively discussed.

Neutron Tagging Can Greatly Reduce Spallation Backgrounds in Super-Kamiokande

Abstract:Super-Kamiokande's spallation backgrounds - the delayed beta decays of nuclides following cosmic-ray muons - are nearly all produced by the small fraction of muons with hadronic showers. We show that these hadronic showers also produce neutrons; their captures can be detected with high efficiency due to the recent addition of dissolved gadolinium to Super-Kamiokande. We show that new cuts based on the neutron tagging of showers could reduce spallation backgrounds by a factor of at least four beyond present cuts. With further work, this could lead to a near-elimination of detector backgrounds above about 6 MeV, which would significantly improve the sensitivity of Super-Kamiokande. These findings heighten the importance of adding gadolinium to Hyper-Kamiokande, which is at a shallower depth. Further, a similar approach could be used in other detectors, for example, the JUNO liquid-scintillator detector, which is also at a shallower depth.

Abstract:We report a search for time variations of the solar B8 neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. Abstract:Neutrinos from very nearby supernovae, such as Betelgeuse, are expected to generate more than ten million events over 10\,s in Super-Kamokande (SK). At such large event rates, the buffers of the SK analog-to-digital conversion board (QBEE) will overflow, causing random loss of data that is critical for understanding the dynamics of the supernova explosion mechanism. In order to solve this problem, two new DAQ modules were developed to aid in the observation of very nearby supernovae. The first of these, the SN module, is designed to save only the number of hit PMTs during a supernova burst and the second, the Veto module, prescales the high rate neutrino events to prevent the QBEE from overflowing based on information from the SN module. In the event of a very nearby supernova, these modules allow SK to reconstruct the time evolution of the neutrino event rate from beginning to end using both QBEE and SN module data. This paper presents the development and testing of these modules together with an analysis of supernova-like data generated with a flashing laser diode. We demonstrate that the Veto module successfully prevents DAQ overflows for Betelgeuse-like supernovae as well as the long-term stability of the new modules. During normal running the Veto module is found to issue DAQ vetos a few times per month resulting in a total dead time less than 1\,ms, and does not influence ordinary operations. Additionally, using simulation data we find that supernovae closer than 800~pc will trigger Veto module resulting in a prescaling of the observed neutrino data.

The investigation extends to the assessment and rectification of discrepancies inherent in the dataset, employing methods of estimation, while ensuring data fidelity through Gaussian distribution evaluation. Additionally, this study employs various parameters within a consistent methodology to observe the environmental effects on muon detection outcomes.

Abstract:A first study of neutron tagging is conducted in Super-Kamiokande, a 50,000 ton water Cherenkov detector, The tagging efficiencies of thermal neutrons are evaluated in a 0.2% GdCl3-water solution and pure water. They are determined to be, respectively, 66.7% for events above 3 MeV and 20% with corresponding background probabilities of 2 x 10(-4) and 3 x 10(-2). This newly developed technique may enable water Cherenkov detectors to identify (nu) over bar (e)'s from astrophysical sources as well as those produced by commercial reactors via the delayed coincidence scheme. Abstract:Photomultiplier tube technology has been the photodetector of choice for the technique of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes since its birth more than 50 years ago. Recently, new types of photosensors are being contemplated for the next generation Cherenkov Telescope Array. It is envisioned that the array will be partly composed of telescopes using a Schwarzschild-Couder two mirror design never built before which has significantly improved optics. The camera of this novel optical design has a small plate scale which enables the use of compact photosensors. We present an extensive and detailed study of the two most promising devices being considered for this telescope design: the silicon photomultiplier and the multi-anode photomultiplier tube. We evaluated their most critical performance characteristics for imaging gamma-ray showers, and we present our results in a cohesive manner to clearly evaluate the advantages and disadvantages that both types of device have to offer in the context of GeV-TeV gamma-ray astronomy.

A large area detector for thermal neutron flux measurements at the KamLAND site

Abstract:A large area (0.5~m $\times$ 0.5~m) thermal neutron detector was developed based on 0.32~mm-thick $^{6}$LiF:ZnS(Ag) scintillator sheets. The detector was constructed for measurements of seasonal variations in low intensity thermal neutron flux at deep underground sites. The detector response to neutrons was studied using a low intensity $^{241}$Am/$^{9}$Be($\alpha$,n) neutron source. The digital pulse shape discrimination technique was applied to separate neutron capture events from the background caused by traces of $\alpha$-emitters from Uranium and Thorium decay chains in scintillator components. The thermal neutron detection efficiency was 0.368$\pm$0.018 (0.155$\pm$0.009) before (after) event selection based on the digital pulse shape discrimination method. The measured $\alpha$-particle background event rate in the $^{6}$LiF:ZnS(Ag) scintillator was (4.88$\pm$0.06(stat))$\times$10$^{-6}$ $\alpha$ cm$^{-2}$sec$^{-1}$. As a test of detector performance we measured the thermal neutron flux at the KamLAND area of the Kamioka neutrino observatory and compared it with result of the neutron flux measurement carried out at the Super-Kamiokande site. The thermal neutron flux at KamLAND was (6.43$\pm$0.50)$\times$10$^{-6}$ n cm$^{-2}$sec$^{-1}$ that included $\sim$10~\% contribution from neutrons with energies above 1~eV. During the detector construction we identified a source of high amplitude noise pulses generated by 5-inch R1250 photomultipliers manufactured by Hamamatsu Photonics K. K..

Abstract:In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of Gd-2(SO4)(3) center dot 8H(2)O (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m(3)/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated Gd-2 (SO4)(3) center dot 8H(2)O solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m(3)/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be 115 +/- 1 mu s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of 111 +/- 2 ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.
