Abstract:We propose and analyze a 90 degrees polarization rotator based on wave coupling through an intermediate, multimode, axially uniform waveguide. The coupling efficiency of the x- and y-polarized fundamental modes between the horizontal and vertical rectangular waveguides is remarkably enhanced with the help of the TE(01) mode in the multimode waveguide. The polarization rotator has a very short (21-microm) conversion length with a 17.22 dB extinction ratio. It also exhibits a 68-nm bandwidth for polarization conversion efficiency above 90%.

Abstract:A high-performance broadband polarization-independent directional coupler is designed by using asymmetric-waveguides configuration on a silicon-on-insulator platform. Through the design of cascaded directional couplers, the coupling characteristics of the light with the orthogonally polarized transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) can be manipulated, so that the coupling strength could be equivalent between TE and TM polarizations within an ultra-broadband. Couplers with 50% splitting ratio are designed and simulated for operating in the wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm for both polarizations. Within the 100 nm wavelength range from 1500 nm to 1600 nm, the deviations of splitting ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±3.3% and ±6.2%, respectively. And within the 200 nm wavelength range from 1450 nm to 1650 nm, the deviations for TE polarization and TM polarization are ±9.0% and ±7.8%, respectively. The footprint of this polarization-independent directional coupler is only 21 μm × 1.6 μm.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and highly efficient polarization rotator is proposed and experimentally realized on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The polarization rotation (TM0-TE1) process is obtained by utilizing a straight multi-mode waveguide, while the mode conversion (TE1-TE0) process is realized by a bent multi-mode waveguide. For the proposed structure, only one etching step is required for the fabrication. The measured extinction ratio and insertion loss at the central wavelength are 19.8 and 0.86 dB, which agree well with the simulations.

Abstract:A novel ultra-compact polarization rotator (PR) based on surface plasmon polaritons waveguide is proposed. The total footprint of the proposed device is only 0.44μm × 2.55μm. Simulations with 3D-FDTD show that the PR has a broad bandwidth (1.4μm~1.7μm) with extinction ratios larger than 10dB. The insertion losses are less than 1dB during the wavelength range of 1450nm~1650nm.

Abstract:An ultra-compact and broadband polarization rotator is proposed and realized on the Silicon-On-Insulator platform. The polarization rotation (TM0-TE1) is achieved by utilizing a straight multi-mode waveguide. Then, a bent multi-mode waveguide is used to obtain the TE1-TE0 mode conversion process. Finally, a bent coupler is utilized to filter out the residual TM0 mode. The measured extinction ratio at the central wavelength is 32.5 dB. The -20 dB bandwidth is measured to be 90 nm.

Abstract:We propose a compact ultra-broadband silicon-on-insulator polarization rotator. The conversion area of the polarizer rotator is a stair-shaped waveguide, where the middle step is partially replaced by a sub-wavelength grating. The length of the conversion region of the polarization rotator is only 3.36 µm. For TM-TE and TE-TM working cases, the insertion loss is less than 0.9 dB, the polarization conversion efficiency reached 99%, and the polarization extinction ratio is greater than 20 dB, in an ultra-broad wavelength range of 1260 nm to 1740 nm, which covers O-, E-, S-, C-, L-, and Ubands.

Abstract:We propose a novel hybrid plasmonic polarization rotator based on mode interference. Operating at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.55 μm, the rotation length is very short (3.2 μm), while the polarization conversion efficiency is as high as 99.5%. The total device insertion loss is only 1.38 dB, much smaller than the common level of plasmonic devices. It also has potential to realize integrated waveplates for various polarization states.

Abstract:Silicon waveguides typically exhibit optical anisotropy, which leads to polarization correlation and single-polarization operations. This consequently creates a demand for polarization-control devices. This paper introduces a CMOS-compatible O-band reconfigurable TE/TM polarization rotator comprising two symmetrical polarization rotator-splitters and phase shifters. This configuration enables dynamic conversion of any linear polarization to its quadratic equivalent. Experimental results indicate that the reconfigurable polarization rotator exhibits an insertion loss of less than 1.5 dB. Furthermore, the bandwidth for a polarization extinction ratio beyond 15 dB exceeds 60 nm.

Abstract:We proposed and experimentally demonstrated high-performance 1550- and 1310-nm silicon polarization splitter-rotators (PSRs) with optimized tapers. Each PSR consists of a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based bi-level taper and shortcuts to an adiabaticity (STA)-based ridge-waveguide coupler. Ridge waveguides are introduced to increase the coupling coefficient of the STA-based coupler. The measured polarization conversion loss and polarization crosstalk are less than 0.74 and -20 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1500-1600 nm for the 1550-nm PSR, and less than 1 and -23 dB, respectively, in the wavelength range of 1260-1340 nm for the 1310-nm PSR. Abstract:A polarization beam splitter-rotator based on asymmetric directional coupling is proposed. An ultrashort cross-polarization coupling length of 7.7 μm is achieved by manipulating the optical field distribution via the plasmonic effect, which is the shortest one reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. At the wavelength of 1.55 μm, the extinction ratios are as high as 50.9 dB and 28.2 dB for fundamental transverse magnetic (TM0) and transverse electric (TE0) polarizations, respectively, and the corresponding insertion losses are 1.545 dB and 0.037 dB. In addition, the TM0-to-TE0 polarization conversion efficiency is higher than 95% within a bandwidth of 70 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose a hybrid plasmonic polarization rotator (PR) utilizing asymmetrical directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide and a strip Si dielectric waveguide (DW), which features ultracompact size, low insertion loss (IL), and silicon-on-insulator compatibility. The coupling length is only 11.2 mu m, much shorter than the PRs based on asymmetrical directional coupling between two strip DWs on the same silicon core layer with the same coupling gap. The presented PR shows a high polarization conversion efficiency (PCE) of 99.9% at 1550 nm with an IL of 0.136 dB, which is extremely low in the reported plasmonic PRs. In addition, it yields the PCE better than 96% and the IL lower than 0.42 dB over a bandwidth of 60 nm.

Abstract:We proposed a polarization rotator inspired by stimulated Raman adiabatic passage model from quantum optics, which is composed of a signal waveguide and an ancillary waveguide. The two orthogonal modes in signal waveguide and the oblique mode in ancillary waveguide form a Λ-type three-level system. By controlling the width of signal waveguide and the gap between two waveguides, adiabatic conversion between two orthogonal modes can be realized in the signal waveguide. With such adiabatic passage, polarization conversion is completed within 150 μm length, with the efficiencies over 99% for both conversions between horizontal polarization and vertical polarization. In addition, such a polarization rotator is quite robust against fabrication error, allowing a wide range of tolerances for the rotator geometric parameters. Our work is not only significative to photonic simulations of coherent quantum phenomena with engineered photonic waveguides, but also enlightens the practical applications of these phenomena in optical device designs.

Abstract:A polarization rotator based on loaded parallel strip-lines is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The unit cells are short-stub loaded parallel strip-lines. The arrays on the front and back layers are rotated by 90° to each other. By loading the stubs, good coupling between the two layers is obtained. Such a structural rotation along with the loading stubs allow the $y$ -polarized wave to be converted to $x$ -polarized wave through field coupling. A broad transmission bandwidth of 30% (86-116 GHz) by using the proposed structure has been reached. In addition, the PTFE substrate is only 0.25 mm thick, which is less than $0.1lambda $ at 86 GHz. Such a thickness allows the polarization rotator to be easily mounted on antenna radomes. The fabricated prototype demonstrates good agreement between simulation and measurement results.

Abstract:In this paper, an on-chip silicon polarization beam splitter using a particle-swarm-optimized counter-tapered directional coupler is proposed, designed, and fabricated. The coupling length of the proposed device is only 5 µm. As the waveguide width variation ΔW increases from -20 to 20 nm, the simulated polarization extinction ratio larger than 18.67 dB and the corresponding insertion loss lower than 0.17 dB are achieved. Measured experimental results achieved insertion loss <0.50 dB, TE polarization extinction between 16.68 to 31.87 dB, TM polarization extinction between 17.78 to 31.13 dB, over the wavelength range 1525 to 1600 nm.

Abstract:A novel concept for an ultracompact polarization splitter-rotator is proposed by utilizing a structure combining an adiabatic taper and an asymmetrical directional coupler. The adiabatic taper structure is singlemode at the input end while it becomes multimode at the other end. When light propagates along the adiabatic taper structure, the TM fundamental mode launched at the narrow end is efficiently (close to 100%) converted to the first higher-order TE mode at the wide end because of the mode coupling between them. By using an asymmetrical directional coupler that has two adjacent waveguides with different core widths, the first higher-order TE mode is then coupled to the TE fundamental mode of the adjacent narrow waveguide. On the other hand, the input TE polarization does not change when it goes through the adiabatic taper structure. In the region of the asymmetrical directional coupler, the TE fundamental mode in the wide waveguide is not coupled to the adjacent narrow waveguide because of phase mismatch. In this way, TE- and TM- polarized light are separated while the TM fundamental mode is also converted into the TE fundamental mode. A design example of the proposed polarization splitter-rotator is given by using silicon-on-insulator nanowires and the total length of the device is less than 100μm. Furthermore, only a one-mask process is needed for the fabrication process, which is compatible with the standard fabrication for the regular photonic integrated circuits based on SOI nanowires.
