Abstract:Query language definition of business process model based on behavioral properties need solid and reliable theoretical basis. The sequential relationship between tasks is the directly reflect for business process behavior model in business processes. The existing Property Specification Pattern System (SPS) to describe sequential relationship is huge and complex for analyzing and reflecting inner relationship. By using the principle and method of mathematical logic, the existing SPS was analyzed and deduced deeply. The scale and complexity of this system were reduced significantly and the theory basis for behavioral language-based process model was defined on the premise of reserving original system's description.

Abstract:Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) is a powerful tool for describing web services compositions. The protocol of a BPEL process indicates the order of messages, in which it sends or receives messages, as well as the structure of the internal logic. Although formal methods have been used to model BPEL, the purposes of these researches are to verify BPEL process and eliminate ambiguity. Recent research advances in dynamic adaptation and reconfiguration of service processes require a new formal method to express BPEL process with the ability of problem solving. This paper presents a linear logic based representation for BPEL process. Our approach expresses both basic and structured activities in BPEL. With the help of proof-searching tools, our approach set up a formal foundation for (semi)automatically solving more challenging issues of service computing.

Abstract:The research on the business models is a hot topic in recent years. It is an interesting problem to study the business model of the service. There are three kinds of models related: classical service models, Business process (BP) models and the enterprise business (EB) models in management. However, none of them covers all the properties of the service business model. In this paper, we define the business model of the service as the combination of four kinds of strategies and name it as the service pattern. We also propose a language named Service Pattern Description Language (SPDL) covering all the elements involved in these strategies. We formulate the language syntax and two basic extraction rules assisting economic analysis. Furthermore, we extend Business Process Model Notation (BPMN) to support SPDL, which is named BPMN for Service Pattern (BPMN4SP). The example of Mobile Application Platform is studied in detail for a better understanding of SPDL.

Abstract:WS-BPEL has emerged as the de facto industry standard for composing Web services. With the wide attention for WS-BPEL, Quality of Service (QoS) for it has become a key differentiator to judge the services with same functionalities. One main challenge currently is how to analyze the QoS of WS-BPEL services at the early design phase. This work aims at proposing a methodology for model-based analysis of WS-BPEL processes, with a focus on the assessment of non-functional quality attributes. Particularly, we define a small language BPELR to model the core features of WS-BPEL language, and annotate message receiving and service invoking activities with message-arrive rate and service-execute rate separately. Then a set of rules are proposed for translating BPELR into the input language of the probabilistic model checker PRISM, which can be used to stochastically analyze WS-BPEL processes. Finally, we show our approach by a purchase order business process example.

Abstract:Multimodal reasoning stands as a pivotal capability for large vision-language models (LVLMs). The integration with Domain-Specific Languages (DSL), offering precise visual representations, equips these models with the opportunity to execute more accurate reasoning in complex and professional domains. However, the vanilla Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting method faces challenges in effectively leveraging the unique strengths of visual and DSL representations, primarily due to their differing reasoning mechanisms. Additionally, it often falls short in addressing critical steps in multi-step reasoning tasks. To mitigate these challenges, we introduce the \underline{B}i-Modal \underline{B}ehavioral \underline{A}lignment (BBA) prompting method, designed to maximize the potential of DSL in augmenting complex multi-modal reasoning tasks. This method initiates by guiding LVLMs to create separate reasoning chains for visual and DSL representations. Subsequently, it aligns these chains by addressing any inconsistencies, thus achieving a cohesive integration of behaviors from different modalities. Our experiments demonstrate that BBA substantially improves the performance of GPT-4V(ision) on geometry problem solving ($28.34\% \to 34.22\%$), chess positional advantage prediction ($42.08\% \to 46.99\%$) and molecular property prediction ($77.47\% \to 83.52\%$).

Abstract:We present the second generation of a rule-based language called Biochemical Space Language (BCSL) that combines the advantages of different approaches and thus makes an effort to overcome several problems with existing solutions. The key aspect of the language is the level of abstraction it uses, which allows scalable and compact hierarchical specification of biochemical entities. This abstraction enables unique analysis techniques to reason about properties of models written in the language on the semantic and syntactic level.

Abstract:Building Information Modeling (BIM) produces three-dimensional object-oriented models of buildings combining the geometrical information with a wide range of properties about materials, products, safety, to name just a few. BIM is slowly but inevitably revolutionizing the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Buildings need to be compliant with regulations about stability, safety, and environmental impact. Manual compliance checking is tedious and error-prone, and amending flaws discovered only at construction time causes huge additional costs and delays. Several tools can check BIM models for conformance with rules/guidelines. For example, Singapore's CORENET e-Submission System checks fire safety. But since the current BIM exchange format only contains basic information about building objects, a separate, ad-hoc model pre-processing is required to determine, for example, evacuation routes. Moreover, they face difficulties in adapting existing built-in rules and/or adding new ones (to cater for building regulations, that can vary not only among countries but also among parts of the same city), if at all possible. We propose the use of logic-based executable formalisms (CLP and Constraint ASP) to couple BIM models with advanced knowledge representation and reasoning capabilities. Previous experience shows that such formalisms can be used to uniformly capture and reason with knowledge (including ambiguity) in a large variety of domains. Additionally, incorporating checking within design tools makes it possible to ensure that models are rule-compliant at every step. This also prevents erroneous designs from having to be (partially) redone, which is also costly and burdensome. To validate our proposal, we implemented a preliminary reasoner under CLP(Q/R) and ASP with constraints and evaluated it with several BIM models.

Abstract:The WS-BPEL language has recently become a de facto standard for modeling Web-based business processes. One of its essential features is the fully programmable compensation mechanism. To understand it better, many recent works have mainly focused on formal semantic models for WS-BPEL. In this paper, we make one step forward by investigating the verification problem for business processes written in BPEL-like languages. We propose a set of proof rules in Hoare-logic style as an axiomatic verification system for a BPEL-like core language containing key features such as data states, fault and compensation handling. We also propose a big-step operational semantics which incorporates all these key features. Our verification rules are proven sound with respect to this underlying semantics. The application of the verification rules is illustrated via the proof search process for a nontrivial example.

Abstract:We propose a framework grounded in Logic Programming for representing and reasoning about business processes from both the procedural and ontological point of views. In particular, our goal is threefold: (1) define a logical language and a formal semantics for process models enriched with ontology-based annotations; (2) provide an effective inference mechanism that supports the combination of reasoning services dealing with the structural definition of a process model, its behavior, and the domain knowledge related to the participating business entities; (3) implement such a theoretical framework into a process modeling and reasoning platform. To this end we define a process ontology coping with a relevant fragment of the popular BPMN modeling notation. The behavioral semantics of a process is defined as a state transition system by following an approach similar to the Fluent Calculus, and allows us to specify state change in terms of preconditions and effects of the enactment of activities. Then we show how the procedural process knowledge can be seamlessly integrated with the domain knowledge specified by using the OWL 2 RL rule-based ontology language. Our framework provides a wide range of reasoning services, including CTL model checking, which can be performed by using standard Logic Programming inference engines through a goal-oriented, efficient, sound and complete evaluation procedure. We also present a software environment implementing the proposed framework, and we report on an experimental evaluation of the system, whose results are encouraging and show the viability of the approach.
Modeling belief, capability and promise for cognitive agents – a modal logic approach

Abstract:From the last decade, modeling of cognitive agents have drawn great attention and provide a new paradigm for addressing fundamental questions in cognitive science. In this paper, a logical model for reasoning about cognitive agent's three attitudes Belief, Capability and Promise is proposed. A formalization is provided based on the modal logic to specify and analyze dependencies between the three attitudes. By adopting a set of constraints that describe how the three attitudes are related to each other, we can draw a number of properties of the model. To show the potential applications of the model, we apply the BCP model to a decision-making example in trading agent competition for supply chain management(TAC SCM). The logical model proposed here provides a rigorous semantic basis for modeling cognitive agent and reasoning about multi-agent interactions.
BPP-Search: Enhancing Tree of Thought Reasoning for Mathematical Modeling Problem Solving

Abstract:LLMs exhibit advanced reasoning capabilities, offering the potential to transform natural language questions into mathematical models. However, existing open-source operations research datasets lack detailed annotations of the modeling process, such as variable definitions, focusing solely on objective values, which hinders reinforcement learning applications. To address this, we release the StructuredOR dataset, annotated with comprehensive labels that capture the complete mathematical modeling process. We further propose BPP-Search, a algorithm that integrates reinforcement learning into a tree-of-thought structure using Beam search, a Process reward model, and a pairwise Preference algorithm. This approach enables efficient exploration of tree structures, avoiding exhaustive search while improving accuracy. Extensive experiments on StructuredOR, NL4OPT, and MAMO-ComplexLP datasets show that BPP-Search significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, including Chain-of-Thought, Self-Consistency, and Tree-of-Thought. In tree-based reasoning, BPP-Search also surpasses Process Reward Model combined with Greedy or Beam Search, demonstrating superior accuracy and efficiency, and enabling faster retrieval of correct solutions.

Abstract:Automated legal reasoning and its application in smart contracts and automated decisions are increasingly attracting interest. In this context, ethical and legal concerns make it necessary for automated reasoners to justify in human-understandable terms the advice given. Logic Programming, specially Answer Set Programming, has a rich semantics and has been used to very concisely express complex knowledge. However, modelling discretionality to act and other vague concepts such as ambiguity cannot be expressed in top-down execution models based on Prolog, and in bottom-up execution models based on ASP the justifications are incomplete and/or not scalable. We propose to use s(CASP), a top-down execution model for predicate ASP, to model vague concepts following a set of patterns. We have implemented a framework, called s(LAW), to model, reason, and justify the applicable legislation and validate it by translating (and benchmarking) a representative use case, the criteria for the admission of students in the "Comunidad de Madrid".

Abstract:Explaining opaque Machine Learning (ML) models is an increasingly relevant problem. Current explanation in AI (XAI) methods suffer several shortcomings, among others an insufficient incorporation of background knowledge, and a lack of abstraction and interactivity with the user. We propose REASONX, an explanation method based on Constraint Logic Programming (CLP). REASONX can provide declarative, interactive explanations for decision trees, which can be the ML models under analysis or global/local surrogate models of any black-box model. Users can express background or common sense knowledge using linear constraints and MILP optimization over features of factual and contrastive instances, and interact with the answer constraints at different levels of abstraction through constraint projection. We present here the architecture of REASONX, which consists of a Python layer, closer to the user, and a CLP layer. REASONX's core execution engine is a Prolog meta-program with declarative semantics in terms of logic theories.

Abstract:In recent research of mental state in MAS, researchers try to add social mental state attributes into individual model, and to study the reasoning rule of social commit, dependence, and joint intention. BDI model is applied in the specification and verification of practice system successfully, such as dMARS. But, there are many shortcomings with respect to the researches on BDI agent, such as the over-domination of the intention-centered methodology, inconvenience to the description of sociality in MAS, and the gap between theory and practice. This paper replaces intention by obligation, which is a social concept and more intuitive. Firstly, we review the research on mental state of agent, analyze the shortcomings of the intention-centered methodology, present the layered conceptual model of MAS. In individual layer, agents memory and process belief, desire, and intention. In social mental layer, agents contact with other agent by memory and process commit, and obligation. The mental state of social layer is related with individual layer of agents. Then we point out that belief, desire and obligation (BDO) should be regarded as primitive attributes to describe agent's mental state and various societal phenomenon. We develop BDO logic and its semantics, import reward, punish, commit and decommit, and give descriptions for such social concepts as team, organization, and organization intention. We also discuss the deductive relationship between obligation and other mental states. We regard BDO logic as an improvement of BDI logic presented by Rao and Georgeff, and as a more expressive framework for the description of social agents and societal concepts. At last, we give an example to show the description power of BDO logic. The future work include giving more perfect semantic model, proving the soundness and completeness of BDO logic, giving dynamic model of BDO agent by combining dynamic revise semantic of mental states, and presenting agent/MAS structure based on BDO logic frame.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the semantics of BPEL4WS lan- guage which is a de facto standard for specifying and execution work∞ow speciflcation for web service composition and orchestration. For the con- venience, We propose the language called "-BPEL including all primitive and structured activities within BPEL4WS. Moreover, As the Timed Au- tomata (TA) (2) is powerful in designing real-time models with multiple clocks and has well developed automatic tool support the veriflcation, we deflne and map BPEL4WS constructs into composable Timed Au- tomata. Therefore, all the properties we want to check within BPEL4WS can be verifled in TA network correspondingly. Furthermore, we prove the mapping from "-BPEL to TA is a simulation which means the TA network simulates correctly the corresponding speciflcation written in BPEL4WS. The case study in Uppaal model checker shows that our method is efiective, and a Java supporting tool based on Uppaal model checker engine has been developed. Achieving Flexibility in Business Process Modeling Using an Algebraic Language

Abstract:Companies nowadays are under increasing pressure to adapt their business processes to the ever-changing business environment. However, most traditional business process modeling (BPM) methods lack enough flexibility. It is hard to extract and reuse information and knowledge embedded in the existing business process models to build new models. We propose an algebraic framework based on a many-sorted algebra, algebra of system (AoS), to achieve the flexibility in business process modeling. We decompose business process models into different modules of knowledge and encode them as different algebraic domains of AoS. Within each algebraic domain, knowledge is encoded as operands. Based on operands, each algebraic domain is equipped with operators to provide computation capabilities. The operands and operators ensure the flexibility that the framework can achieve and the analysis capabilities that the framework can provide.

Abstract:Business rules represent the primary means by which companies define their business, perform their actions in order to reach their objectives. Thus, they need to be expressed unambiguously to avoid inconsistencies between business stakeholders and formally in order to be machine-processed. A promising solution is the use of a controlled natural language (CNL) which is a good mediator between natural and formal languages. This paper presents RuleCNL, which is a CNL for defining business rules. Its core feature is the alignment of the business rule definition with the business vocabulary which ensures traceability and consistency with the business domain. The RuleCNL tool provides editors that assist end-users in the writing process and automatic mappings into the Semantics of Business Vocabulary and Business Rules (SBVR) standard. SBVR is grounded in first order logic and includes constructs called semantic formulations that structure the meaning of rules.

Abstract:Software process supporting environment (PSE) is a kind of computer system that supports meta-process of software process. PSE controls and guides real-world software development process by enacting a pre-defined software process model (SPM). The way SPM uses to control real-word process can be categorized into two groups: proactive and reactive. The proactive way cannot support software process evolution well, so more and more people pay attention to the reactive way. A kind of reactive SPM and the graphic software process modeling language which is used to define it are presented. At the same time, for each model which is defined with this language, a method is proposed to express the dynamic semantics of its behavior view with the temporal logic language XYZ/E. This provides a rigorous dynamic semantics for the model and a formal basis for its enactment and analysis.

Abstract:Business Processing Execution Language (BPEL) and BPEL for People (BPEL4People) are two web services orchestration languages for composing web services. To describe formally their semantics, we introduce the πit-calculus, a new variant of the π-calculus, in this paper. The good feature of the πit-calculus is that its execution can be interrupted and can handle timing events as well. We provide both syntax and semantics of the πit -calculus and define a strong bisimulation relation that specifies when two processes can be considered as the same. With the new calculus, we then model the activities of BPEL and BPEL4People, and give their precise semantics. Our formal framework may facilitate the reliability and consistency analysis in a BPEL or BPEL4People design process.

Abstract:BPEL (Business Process Execution Language) has become the standard for specifying and executing workflow specifications for Web service composition invocation. A major weakness of BPEL is the lack of so-called "human workflow" support. The BPEL4People specification tries to amend this by adding human task support to BPEL. In this paper, we propose a formal model of BPEL4People using the CSP process algebra, and discuss some issues we found through analyzing the model. Although based on BPEL4People, this is a general work, and can also be viewed as a formal model of human workflow.
