Abstract:From the Contemporary Chinese Dictionary, 3,159 personality descriptors were selected and then ranked by the frequency of use. Among those, the top 413 terms with the highest frequency were administered to two independent large samples in China for self-ratings and peer ratings to explore the emic Chinese personality structure as well as to test the universality of other models. One- and two-factor structures found in previous studies of other languages were well replicated. Previous structures with more than two factors were not well replicated, but six- and seven-factor models were at least as well supported as the Big Five. Emic analysis indicated that a seven-factor structure was the most informative structure relatively salient across subsamples of self-ratings and peer ratings, across original and ipsatized data, and across differences in variable selections. These factors can be called Extraversion, Conscientiousness/Diligence, Unselfishness, Negative Valence, Emotional Volatility, Intellect/Positive Valence, and Dependency/Fragility.

Abstract:The response patterns of Chinese subjects to the items and facets of NEO Personality Inventory Revised (NEO PI‐R) were investigated. The Big Five‐factor structure underlying this instrument was not found, while a seven‐factor structure, more recently proposed to represent the Chinese personality, emerged. A cross‐cultural strategy was adopted to analyze these results and mechanisms through which culture influences personality, behavioral categories and specific behaviors were proposed. The results showed that the Big Seven model of Chinese personality was stable and Western personality questionnaires could not accurately measure the personality characteristics of the Chinese.

Abstract:The syntactic structure of sentences in which a new word appears may provide listeners with cues to that new word’s form class. In English, for example, a noun tends to follow a determiner ( a/ an/ the), while a verb precedes the morphological inflection [ing]. The presence of these markers may assist children in identifying a word’s form class and thus glean some information about its meaning. This study examined whether Mandarin, a language that has a relatively impoverished morphosyntactic system, offers reliable morphosyntactic cues to the noun–verb distinction in child-directed speech (CDS). Using the CHILDES Beijing corpora, Study 1 found that Mandarin CDS has reliable morphosyntactic markers to the noun–verb distinction. Study 2 examined the relationship between mothers’ use of a set of early-acquired nouns and verbs in the Beijing corpora and the age of acquisition (AoA) of these words. Results showed that the occurrence of the form class markers is a reliable predictor of the AoA for the early-acquired nouns and verbs.
A Diachronic Study of Chinese Word Length Distribution.

Abstract:An investigation of diachronic texts in one language would be appropriate in order to track down the background of the individual parameters of the word length distribution models. The present article investigates how word length evolves based on the analysis of texts from ancient Chinese within a time span of 1000 years. The results show that the parameter a in Zipf-Alekseev's function increases with time, but it is influenced by language policy in modern times, which causes it to decrease a little, but a predictive estimate of the word length distributions shows that the parameter a really increases with time, which means it is an element of a self-organizing system. A deeper investigation into the historical changes of each word length class as well as four statistical indexes of word length distributions reveal that the increase of multi-syllable words is the main trend in historical developments of word length distributions, which may be inter-correlated with the diachronic increase of parameter a. What is more, the diachronic synergetic relation between word length and mean word frequency also reveals the increasing use of multi-syllable words in communications which can be seen from the decrease of the absolute value of the negative parameter b in the function y = ax(b).

Abstract:This paper analyses the 500 most frequent verbs in contemporary Chinese and investigates their synergetic properties. The results show that the rank-frequency distributions of both valency and polysemy abide by a power-law distribution and that valency and polysemy of these verbs abide by the Good distribution and the positive negative binomial distribution respectively. Statistical analysis indicates that the greater valency a verb has, the greater polysemy, frequency and polytextuality can be expected. To find a suitable unit of measurement, strokes, a feature of the Chinese writing system, and pinyin, a phonemic transcription system of Chinese, are introduced in the present study to measure word length. These two types of word length correlate highly with each other, and both exhibit some inverse interrelations with other linguistic variables like verb valency, polysemy, frequency and polytextuality. Finally, based on these findings, we present a synergetic model (control cycle) of Chinese verb valency.

Abstract:Multi-dimensional Analysis (MD) is a quantitative corpus-based approach which describes and interprets patterns of register variations through factor analysis of a set of linguistic fea-tures across text varieties, and reveals their systematic relationships with communicative purposes. The model has been employed to explore language variation in many languages (e.g., English, Somali, Nukulaelae Tuvaluan, Korean, and Spanish), yet insufficient research has been carried out on register variation in Mandarin Chinese on a full scale. In this research, 88 linguistic features are tagged in a balanced corpus composed of 20 Mandarin Chinese spoken and written registers. Through factor analysis, five dimensions which consist of 65 linguistic features are identified and interpreted from linguistic and functional perspectives. The first two dimensions, interactive vs. informational discourse and narrative vs. non-narrative concern, are similar to dimensions that have been claimed to constitute universal parameters of register variation in previous MD studies. The exist-ence of two potential universal dimensions suggests that the basic communicative purposes and functions underlying the different languages are markedly similar, given the existing social, cultural, and linguistic dissimilarities. Dimension 4, casual real-time speech with stance, is identified as a distinctive dimension in Mandarin Chinese. Dimension 3, explicit-ness in cohesion and reasoning, and Dimension 5, abstract information, are found to be as-sociated with foreign influence, and their register variation patterns illustrate how foreign contact affects Chinese register variation in a quantitative manner.

Abstract:The daily language in mainland China has experienced a shift from traditional Chinese language to modern mandarin Chinese at the beginning of the twentieth century. The Chinese poetry 'revolution' started in the 1910s is considered as a turning point in the Chinese poetry evolution process due to the novel applications of the modern Chinese language. Many temporal poetic studies consider the poems written in traditional Chinese and modern Chinese as two different genres. The two genres are saliently different in rhyme, meter, theme, etc. We aim to detect the specific properties of the evolution process of Chinese poetry in terms of the word categories' distribution patterns. For the purpose, a corpus with 438 randomly selected traditional and modern Chinese poems is built, and some quantitative language indicators (entropy, relative entropy, repeat rate) and some exploratory statistical analysis techniques applicable in corpus linguistics and quantitative linguistics (one-way ANOVA test, cluster analysis)(1) are used to abstract and analyze language data from the corpus. It is concluded that the word categories are distributed significantly differently in traditional poetry and modern poetry. The sound reasons would be that (1) traditional Chinese poetry is more likely to focus on the application of some specific content word categories, for example, nouns, but not auxiliary words and (2) modern poems tend to choose more categories of words. From the perspective of word class distribution patterns, we suppose that the birth of modern Chinese poetry in the 1910s is a sharp change to Chinese poetry production.

Abstract:This study quantitatively investigated word frequencies in parallel Chinese texts at three different periods, namely, Classical Chinese (1855), Beijing Mandarin (1908) and Modern Mandarin (2010), attempting to shed some light on the evolution of the Chinese language over the last 150 years. With the evolution of Chinese: both the types and tokens increased diachronically, and sharp changes can be found in the high-frequency function words, vocabulary richness, and the distribution of word classes. The syntactic structure has also become increasingly complex. In addition, although the length of words (measured in character) has increased diachronically, disyllabic words have not always been preponderant in Chinese after the opium war of 1840–1842. The results show that the complication is a crucial trend in the evolution process of Chinese.
A Study on the Evolution of the Verbal Syntactic Valence Based on Corpus

Abstract:The paper aims at studying the evolution process of the syntactic valence of verbs. In the study, three corpuses, i.e. the corpus of ancient classical Chinese,the corpus of ancient vernacular and the corpus of modern vernacular, are constructed. We selected ten main verbs as the objects of the research, and suggested some methods of sample sentence selecting and analyzing. The complements and modifications of the verbs are analyzed in this paper. It reveals that Chinese grammer changes gradually. The ancient classical Chinese and the ancient vernacular are more similar in sentence structures. After the transformation from the ancient vernacular to the modern vernacular, the complexity of Chinese sentences is increased sharply, indicating that Chinese sentence structures have changed greatly after the transformation from ancient vernacular to modern vernacular.
Modeling and verification of the structure of College English learning motivation within educational context

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the internal structure of College English learning motivation in educational context,based on Drnyei’s (1994) framework of L2 motivation.Statistical analyses were performed on the survey data collected from 2,489 non-English major undergraduates from eight tertiary institutions in China.Results show that the English learning motivation of Chinese college students is comprised of 8 components at 3 levels: L2 deep value,L2 surface value,and L2 vitality at the language level;self-efficacy,attribution,and language learning attitudes and beliefs at the learner level;and learning situation attitudes and L2 use anxiety at the learning situation level.Motivations at the language level affect those at the learner level,which in turn affect motivations at the learning situation level.Results also indicate that L2 deep value and language learning attitudes and beliefs are respectively the most important components of motivations at the language level and the learner level.

Abstract:Chinese language is both a monosyllable one and a diphone-rhythm one. It defines that there are two essential units in Chinese grammar: one is Zi (Chinese characters), and the other is word. The definition of Zi is clear, while the definition of word is a little fuzzy, as most of the words are essentially a kind of combination of Zi which is the starting point of Chinese language organization and is analytic in nature. Every combination of Zi has a weak basis in coagulability. This paper discusses the cultural characteristics of the essential units of Chinese Grammar.
Linguistic emergence from a networks approach: The case of modern Chinese two-character words.

Abstract:The models of linguistic networks and their analytical tools constitute a potential methodology for investigating the formation of structural patterns in actual language use. Research with this methodology has just started, which can hopefully shed light on the emergent nature of linguistic structure. This study attempts to employ linguistic networks to investigate the formation of modern Chinese two-character words (as structural units based on the chunking of their component characters) in the actual use of modern Chinese, which manifests itself as continuous streams of Chinese characters. Network models were constructed based on authentic Chinese language data, with Chinese characters as nodes, their co-occurrence relations as directed links, and the co-occurrence frequencies as link weights. Quantitative analysis of the network models has shown that a Chinese two-character word can highlight itself as a two-node island, i.e., a cohesive sub-network with its two component characters co-occurring more frequently than they co-occur with the other characters. This highlighting mechanism may play a vital role in the formation and acquisition of two-character words in actual language use. Moreover, this mechanism may also throw some light on the emergence of other structural phenomena (with the chunking of specific linguistic units as their basis).
The Structural Complexity of Chinese Words and Its Relationship with Word Frequency.

Abstract:The morphological synergetic model has yet to be fully tested in typical analytic languages. The quantification of Chinese morphology and its relationship with word frequency can help construct and test the morphological synergetic model in Chinese. Based on the Lancaster Corpus of Mandarin Chinese, this study proposes a quantitative method for the structural complexity of Chinese words by Kolmogorov complexity, further examining the interrelation between the structural complexity of words (SCW) and word frequency. Results show that the SCW of words formed by combining morphemes in multiple assembling ways is generally higher than that in a single assembling way among the seven structural types of Chinese words, but derivational affixes impact SCW significantly. The higher SCW, the lower the word frequency. Given the combined effects of morpheme properties, y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) is more suitable to describe the inverse relationship than y=Ax(-b). Additionally, the higher the word frequency, the lower SCW. The delayed negative feedback causes small-scale fluctuations, but y=Ax(-b)e(-cx) can effectively describe the overall interactions between the two. From the internal mechanism, word frequency changes first, thus causing changes in word structure; In turn, for communication effectiveness, the structure of words becomes more complex to carry more meaning, thus influencing word frequency.

Abstract:Language is a complex adaptive system, but how does it change? For investigating this process, four diachronic Chinese word co-occurrence networks have been built based on texts that were written during the last 2,000 years. By comparing the network indicators that are associated with the hierarchical features in language networks, we learn that the hierarchy of Chinese lexical networks has indeed evolved over time at three different levels. The connections of words at the micro level are continually weakening; the number of words in the meso-level communities has increased significantly; and the network is expanding at the macro level. This means that more and more words tend to be connected to medium-central words and form different communities. Meanwhile, fewer high-central words link these communities into a highly efficient small-world network. Understanding this process may be crucial for understanding the increasing structural complexity of the language system.

Abstract:This article delineates the internal structure of mensural classifiers in Mandarin Chinese by arguing that each mensural classifier in Mandarin Chinese contains a silent semantic primitive SCALE, which can be modified by a restricted set of gradable adjectives. Viewing this silent scalar element as a grammatical object explains away a set of puzzles in Chinese linguistics, including the restricted use of adjectives before mensural classifiers, the seemingly free distributional patterns of verbal measure phrases, and the number indeterminacy in the verb reduplication construction.

Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of deriving distance measures between parent and daughter languages with specific relevance to historical Chinese phonology. The diachronic relationship between the languages is modelled as a Probabilistic Finite State Automaton. The Minimum Message Length principle is then employed to find the complexity of this structure. The idea is that this measure is representative of the amount of dissimilarity between the two languages.

Abstract:We investigate how short and long-range word length correlations evolve in Chinese narrative texts. The results show that, for short-range word length correlations, no significant linear evolutionary trend was found. But for long-range correlations, there are two opposite tendencies for two different regimes: the Hurst exponent of small-scale (box size n ranges from 10 to 100) word length correlations decreases over time, and the exponent of large-scale (box size n ranges from 101 to 1000) shows an increasing tendency. The increase of word length is corroborated as an essential regularity of word evolution in written Chinese. Further analyses show that a significant correlation coefficient is obtained between Hurst exponents from the small-scale correlations and mean word length across time. These indicate that word length correlation evolution possesses different self-adaptive mechanisms in terms of different scales of distances between words. We speculate that the increase of word length and sentence length in written Chinese may account for this phenomenon, in terms of both the social-cultural aspects and the self-adapting properties of language structures.

Abstract:Relations between noun modifiers or adnonimals and their head nouns, along with their distribution features, differentiate the stylistic features among languages, and distinguish text genres in a given language. Following a systematic and comprehensive description of adnominal constructions in modern Chinese, this paper explores their rank-frequency distribution properties against three models: the original Zipf’s law, the Zipf-Alekseev law and the Popescu-Altmann-Köhler (PAK) function, with acceptable result for the first and good results for the latter two. The PAK function as a function for stratified texts works well. The research findings validate the categorization in the paper and further prove that adnominals in modern Chinese are normal language units.
