Abstract:The existence of holes in meshes makes it difficult for mesh operations, especially when comes to model rebuilding, rapid prototyping and finite element analysis. Existing hole-filling algorithms are capable of filling holes on small and smooth regions of a model. For large holes with complex boundaries or in curved region, they may not result in satisfactory results. This paper proposes an algorithm which first split the holes into flatter ones and then split the complex holes based the concept of edge expansion. It incrementally splits a complex hole into simple ones by respecting the 3D shape of its boundary and the neighboring meshes, and then fills each resulting simple hole with planar triangulation. The proposed algorithm works well for a variety of complex holes and can better preserve the detailed features of the original mesh.

Abstract:To repair the complex holes in triangular meshes,a novel algorithm based on the concept of edge-expansion was proposed.The least square plane of the hole boundary was computed,and the projecting polygon was obtained by projecting the hole boundary on the least square plane.When the projecting polygon existed self-intersecting,the edge-expansion algorithm was used for each intersecting edge to obtain several new triangular faces,and then the complex hole was divided into several sub-holes.The complex hole-splitting process above-mentioned was incrementally employed for each sub-hole until all sub-holes were divided into simple ones,and then each divided simple hole was repaired with planar triangulation method.Triangular mesh with uniformly shaped hole was achieved using subdivision techniques.The experimental results show that the presented hole-repairing algorithm can work well for a variety of complex holes in the triangular mesh,and can better preserve the detailed features of the original triangular mesh.

Abstract:An approach is proposed to backtrack the intent of designer inselecting the form features and determining their interrelationships during the design process. At first, feature recognition is applied to extract form features from the range data and subdivide the range data into corresponding segments, then to construct a mathematical model with underlying geometric constraints and to find the optimal solution of the parametric objective function satisfying the constraints. Such an approach gives a more accurate approximation of the reconstructed model to the original design.
A Review of 3-D Geometric Model Reconstruction Methods in Reverse Engineering

Abstract:Reverse engineering is more and more widely applied in industry for computer aided product design. In this paper we review the development process of reverse engineering and summarize the various model reconstruction methods. We point out that current data acquisition techniques still lack practical solutions, the shortcoming of geometric model reconstruction is to consider isolated surface patch fitting and neglect the constraints relationship and geometric feature of the object. Because the majority of parts are designed with intended feature and geometric relationship, an important object in models reconstruction is to resume those feature and geometric relationship. Subsequently the key technology of shape data measurement and surface fitting are proposed. Specific problems further solved include multiple views data registration, the probe(CMM) 3D compensation, symmetry datum plane reconstruction, and feature-based model reconstruction strategies. Finally, in order to develop reverse engineering technology into an applied tool, the sophisticated commercial software which integrate reverse engineering should be developed.
Large Surface Fitting and Trimming Techniques for N-sided Regions Filling

Abstract:A new method based on large surface fitting and topology recovery techniques was proposed to deal with the problem of N-sided regions filling in reverse engineering, which appears occasionally in the reconstruction of complex CAD models. Curves were constructed on the surrounding surfaces of the N-si-ded region, and subsequently the surrounding surfaces were trimmed to obtain a large quadrilateral region which including the N-sided region. Then, all the surrounding surfaces were evenly sampled and a B-spline surface was constructed, by interpolating the discrete boundary constraints and approximating all the points in the quadrilateral region. Finally, the B-spline surface was trimmed and all the surrounding sur-faces were refitted subjected to the constraints of points sampled from the B-spline surface. The final mod-el is approximate G~1 continuous in global sense, and it keeps the same topology as the original model.

Abstract:To large holes on the area where curvature variation is complex, this paper presented a smooth holes filling algorithm based on surface fitting. First the basic feature information of hole was achieved and hole was directly filled according to its boundary; then new sample points were acquired inside hole by mesh sub-division and optimization; finally the position of every sample point was adjusted by its weighed surface fitting. Application examples prove that excellent repair mesh can be achieved by this algorithm. It well approximates the original surface and smoothly transits to the original neighbor mesh.

Abstract:A novel hole filling simplification algorithm based on feature-enhancing is proposed to improve the missing features reparation. First, the constraint points area of radial basis function is estimated to confirm the filling surface of hole area. And then, the hole surface is sampled and delaunayed according to the topological structure of the neighboring points. At last, the reparation features are enhanced to improve the detail feature of hole area. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust and effectively.

Rapid B-Spline Surface Reconstruction from a Mesh Model with Holes

Abstract:For a triangular mesh model with holes, a rapid B-spline surface reconstruction algorithm is developed by generating regularized grid points from scattered vertex points of the mesh. First, a rectangular parameter region is obtained on the least square plane and planar regularized grid points are constructed. Then most of the planar grid points are mapped back onto the mesh model and the spatial regularized grid points are obtained, where some points in the grid are missed. The neighbor information of the spatial grid points is used to evaluate the positions of the four corner points. Then a radial basis function surface is constructed and used to fill the missing points. Finally, a smooth B-spline surface is fitted to these spatial regularized grid points. The experimental data shows that the presented algorithm is fast, accurate and robust. The reconstructed surface has good smoothness and extensionality. It can be well applied to reconstruct B-spline surface from mesh model after data segmentation in reverse engineering.

Abstract:Objective The development of 3D reconstruction technology has led to the wide application of 3D scanning technology in the cultural relic reconstruction and reverse engineering industries.However,scanning models usually include many holes after reconstruction due to the scanning environment,scanning techniques,and other factors.Models with holes affect follow-up application in the cultural relic reconstruction industry and industrial reverse industry.Radial basis function has been widely used in repairing holes.However,implicit surfaces based on radial basis function are sensitive to noise data.Therefore,they cannot be efficiently used in noise hole filling.This study proposes an improved hole-filling algorithm based on radial basis function.The algorithm mainly consists of smoothing noise data,interpolation subdivision hole structure,and radial basis function.In this way,the proposed algorithm can resolve the boundary mutation problem for noise hole repair.Method First,the algorithm uses the Laplace function to smooth the boundary of noisy holes.We use the topological structure of adjacent triangles on the model to check the boundary of holes and identify holes.After identifying holes,we smooth their boundary by multiple neighborhoods before building an implicit surface.The algorithm uses the smoothed data to solve the implicit surface on the basis of the radial basis function.Second,the algorithm subdivides the holes by applying the fast center of gravity interpolation method for regular holes.The gravities of boundary and convergence are used to perform a subdivision process.Third,the algorithm combines the curvature features around the holes to make the filling holes consistent features with scanning data.Therefore,boundary and normal constraint points are used to define the implicit surface solution.The boundary constraint points are taken from the multiple neighborhoods from the boundary of holes,and the normal constraint points are taken with the constraint of normal direction.Finally,the algorithm adjusts the interpolation point with the gradient descent method.The points of interpolation subdivision holes are usually not on the scanning surface of the holes.The algorithm uses the obtained implicit surface equation to find the partial derivative to adjust the interpolation points to the scanning surface rapidly.We use the gradient descent method and the setting error threshold to adjust the interpolation points of holes.In this way,we can achieve smooth patch of filling results.Result 3D classical models and actual mechanical workpieces are scanned to verify our algorithm.The comparison experiment is conducted by applying the wave-front method and Geomagic software method to the same holes.Our algorithm uses a preprocessing method for smoothing holes and keeps the curvature features around the holes.An implicit surface based on the radial basis function is applied to ensure the smoothness of repairing holes.The repairing holes become highly consistent with the surrounding curvature.The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm based on radial basis function is adaptable to noise holes.The results of this algorithm are consistent with the curvature variation around the holes.Therefore,the filling results are natural and smooth.The algorithm is a good way to improve the existing problems of edge mutation and trace obvious.Conclusion The algorithm solves the noise sensitivity problem of implicit surfaces based on radial basis function by the curvature features around holes.However,the results of the algorithm are not ideal for filling some complicated holes.The fast barycentric interpolation function also has limitations for irregular holes.

Abstract:For reconstructing a freeform feature from point cloud, a deformation-based method is proposed in this paper. The freeform feature consists of a secondary surface and a blending surface. The secondary surface plays a role in substituting a local region of a given primary surface. The blending surface acts as a bridge to smoothly connect the unchanged region of the primary surface with the secondary surface. The secondary surface is generated by surface deformation subjected to line constraints, i.e., character lines and limiting lines, not designed by conventional methods. The lines are used to represent the underlying information of the freeform feature in point cloud, where the character lines depict the feature’s shape, and the limiting lines determine its location and orientation. The configuration of the character lines and the extraction of the limiting lines are discussed in detail. The blending surface is designed by the traditional modeling method, whose intrinsic parameters are recovered from point cloud through a series of steps, namely, point cloud slicing, circle fitting and regression analysis. The proposed method is used not only to effectively and efficiently reconstruct the freeform feature, but also to modify it by manipulating the line constraints. Typical examples are given to verify our method.

Abstract:This paper reviews the developed process of reverse engineering, after addressing the research aspects of reverse engineering and main application areas, the various 3D data digitized technology and model reconstruction methods are discussed in particular, some other specific issues including reconstruction method by geometry and constraints, integrated reverse engineering system framework and the software used for reverse engineering are described as well. The limitations of existing research and technology are also described, the representive problems are as followes:data acquistion techniques which consider downstream process very few, surface patch fitting used in geometric model reconstruction neglects the constraints relationship and geometric feature of the object. Before reverse engineering is widely used as a available tool, there will be still several problems needed to be solved.

Abstract:This paper presents a new algorithm for filling holes in Level of Detail 2 (LoD2) building mesh models, addressing the challenges posed by geometric inaccuracies and topological errors. Unlike traditional methods that often alter the original geometric structure or impose stringent input requirements, our approach preserves the integrity of the original model while effectively managing a range of topological errors. The algorithm operates in three distinct phases: (1) pre-processing, which addresses topological errors and identifies pseudo-holes; (2) detecting and extracting complete border rings of holes; and (3) remeshing, aimed at reconstructing the complete geometric surface. Our method demonstrates superior performance compared to related work in filling holes in building mesh models, achieving both uniform local geometry around the holes and structural completeness. Comparative experiments with established methods demonstrate our algorithm's effectiveness in delivering more complete and geometrically consistent hole-filling results, albeit with a slight trade-off in efficiency. The paper also identifies challenges in handling certain complex scenarios and outlines future directions for research, including the pursuit of a comprehensive repair goal for LoD2 models to achieve watertight 2-manifold models with correctly oriented normals. Abstract:This paper presents a new CAD model reconstruction method for finite element mesh analysis. It has been accepted by many researchers that modification of a model is often a necessity as a precursor to effective mesh generation. We design an IGES surface model transformation and repairing method based on trimmed B-spline surface patches, and give an algorithm for reconstructing Brep model from surface model without correct topology information. In processing Brep model for numerical simulation, the critical issues involves the rectification of geometrical and topological errors, clearing up sharp edges and cracks, geometry healing will be emphasized. Our model-healing algorithm essentially simplifies the problems of the imperfect models and allows one to deal with simple surface model rather than complex surface representations for finite element mesh.

Abstract:A feature-preserving mesh completion algorithm is proposed.Firstly the octree-based subdivision of mesh vertices is created.Piecewise quadratic polynomial functions are used to fit the mesh vertices near the hole.Around the sharp features,two or more quadratic functions with different coefficients are used so as to capture sharp features such as edges or corners.The extended Marching Cube algorithm extracts the triangle mesh patch which is stitched to the hole boundary of the original model to complete the polygon mesh.Finally a feature enhancement process is applied to eliminate the aliasing artifacts to obtain fine sharp features.The results of experimental tests show that excellent hole repairing mesh can be achieved.

Abstract:Segmentation is a critical and necessary procedure for computer vision, texture mapping and reverse engineering, which aims to digitally partition scanned point cloud or polygon mesh into subset which belongs to some kind of algebraic or NURBS surface. In this paper, a novel segmentation algorithm on triangulated boundary mesh is proposed based on boundary extraction and feature identification to extract algebraic subset, facilitating subsequent CAD model reconstruction to a great extent. Normal vector and principle curvatures are estimated firstly to identify sharp edge and strips with large curvature (fillet), which can provide a fundamental partition, allowing an accurate identification of patch features, utilizing least-square fitting and statistical error distribution. The outstanding merit of proposed method lies on the accurately hierarchical boundary identification by sharp edge and fillet independently, followed by convenient feature extraction and rather smooth subset boundary. Some complex scanned models are processed on a PC with 2.7GHZ CPU and IG memory, with acceptable running time and satisfactory result, demonstrating the implementation and reliability of proposed method. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:In triangular mesh models, the repair of complex hole poses a difficult problem, which always causes serious repair defects. Therefore, it is needed to develop an intelligent identification and classification method of complex holes to reduce repair difficulties. First, the topological structure of the complex hole is studied and all the holes are divided into single holes and continuous holes depending on whether there are intersection points. Second, to tackle the nesting and connecting of complex continuous holes, a decomposition method of multiply connected domains based on intersection points is proposed to partition or reconstruct complex continuous holes into single holes. Based on the different geometric structures, single holes are classified into five common hole types and a corresponding identification method of single holes is presented. Finally, an experiment is carried out to verify the repair quality and efficiency of the proposed method. Compared with Geomagic software, the proposed method can automatically identify and partition complex holes with fewer defects and similar efficiency. It can reduce the difficulties of repairing complex holes and enable the repair of complex holes based on existing methods. It is shown that the method can be applied to complex hole repair of 3D printing models without the participation of technicians.

High Accuracy Hole Filling for Kinect Depth Maps

Abstract:Hole filling of depth maps is a core technology of the Kinect based visual system. In this paper, we propose a hole filling algorithm for Kinect depth maps based on separately repairing of the foreground and background. There are two-part processing in the proposed algorithm. Firstly, a fast pre-processing to the Kinect depth map holes is performed. In this part, we fill the background holes of Kinect depth maps with the deepest depth image which is constructed by combining the spatio-temporal information of the pixels in Kinect depth map with the corresponding color information in the Kinect color image. The second step is the enhancement for the pre-processing depth maps. We propose a depth enhancement algorithm based on the joint information of geometry and color. Since the geometry information is more robust than the color, we correct the depth by affine transform in prior to utilizing the color cues. Then we determine the filter parameters adaptively based on the local features of the color image which solves the texture copy problem and protects the fine structures. Since L1 norm optimization is more robust to data outliers than L2 norm optimization, we force the filtered value to be the solution for L1 norm optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can protect the intact foreground depth, improve the accuracy of depth at object edges, and eliminate the flashing phenomenon of depth at objects edges. In addition, the proposed algorithm can effectively fill the big depth map holes generated by optical reflection.
