Abstract:We describe a white-light cavity scheme based on a cavity quantum electrodynamics system that consists of multiple three-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and coherently driven by a free-space, circularly polarized field. A linearly polarized field is coupled into the cavity mode and its two circular components induce coherent Raman transitions through the normal modes of the coupled atom-cavity system. One circular component of the cavity field experiences anomalous dispersion which enables broadband light transmission through the cavity. We present the experimental demonstration of the broadband light transmission through an optical cavity coupled to cold Rb atoms.

Abstract:Within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we investigate both the radiation force and the potential of Casimir-Polder type acting on an excited cold two-level atom in a cavity made of left-handed materials and topological insulators. As the time-reversal symmetry is broken on the surface of the topological insulators, the spontaneous emission of the atom placed near the focus point(s) exhibits anisotropic properties. While the potential wells are normally shallow for topological trivial dielectric, they may be amplified in the presence of topological magnetoelectric effect. We find that when there exists only one focus point in the cavity, it is possible to boost the forces or the potential wells by up to one order of magnitude. Meanwhile, the lifetime of the atom could be prolonged owing to the focus effect of the left-handed materials, where the emitted photons can trace back to the atom and reabsorbed by itself. Our results indicate the possibility in forming long-lived potential wells, which may have potential applications in trapping and guiding cold atoms far away from the surface. Abstract:We propose a scheme for a broadband optical cavity induced by interacting dark resonances in a Λ-type four-level atomic system. The interacting dark resonances leads to constructive interference for the nonlinear dispersion and destructive interference for the absorption between two electromagnetically induced transparency windows. The enhanced nonlinear anomalous dispersion is used to broaden the cavity linewidth. The simulation results show that the cavity linewidth could be widened more than one order of magnitude broader than an empty-cavity linewidth. Moreover, the cavity linewidth depends on the intensities and the detunings of coupling fields.

Abstract:We have experimentally realized a white light cavity (WLC) in a wide range of the cavity input field's intensity in an N-type atomic system. As the linear and nonlinear dispersion can be tuned conveniently, for different cavity input field's intensity, the condition of WLC can be satisfied. In our experiment, the WLC with broad linewidth of about 100MHz can be achieved with the cavity input field's intensity from a few μW to dozens of mW. This can be applied in the gravitation wave detectors, pulse shaping, nonlinear spectroscopy, atom and ion cooling, etc.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate that broad, tunable bandwidth of an optical ring cavity can be achieved by making use of the negative dispersion of the Kerr nonlinear refractive index in the three-level electromagnetically-induced transparency medium. For a given cavity field intensity, the white-light cavity condition can always be satisfied by choosing the appropriate coupling beam parameters. This white-light cavity scheme can be used effectively to achieve large buildup intensity in the signal-recycling cavity with a broad bandwidth in future advanced gravitational wave detectors.

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of tunable, nonreciprocal quantum transport of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a momentum lattice. By implementing a dissipative Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring in momentum space and sending atoms through it, we demonstrate a directional atom flow by measuring the momentum distribution of the condensate at different times. While the dissipative AB ring is characterized by the synthetic magnetic flux through the ring and the laser-induced loss on it, both the propagation direction and transport rate of the atom flow sensitively depend on these highly tunable parameters. We demonstrate that the nonreciprocity originates from the interplay of the synthetic magnetic flux and the laser-induced loss, which simultaneously breaks the inversion and the time-reversal symmetries. Our results open up the avenue for investigating nonreciprocal dynamics in cold atoms, and highlight the dissipative AB ring as a flexible building element for applications in quantum simulation and quantum information.

Abstract:The cavity quantum electrodynamics[QED]system is a promising platform for quantum optics and quantum information experiments.Its core is the strong coupling between atoms and optical cavity,which causes difficulty in the overlap between the atoms and the antinode of optical cavity mode.Here,we use a programmable movable optical dipole trap to load a cold atomic ensemble into an optical fiber microcavity and realize the strong coupling between the atoms and the optical cavity in which the coupling strength can be improved by polarization gradient cooling and adiabatic loading.By the measurement of vacuum Rabi splitting,the coupling strength can be as high as gN=2π × 400 MHz,which means the effective atom number is Neff=16 and the collective cooperativity is CN=1466.These results show that this experimental system can be used for cold atomic ensemble and cold molecule based cavity QED research.

Abstract:We study atomic coherence and interference in four-level atoms confined in an optical cavity and explores the interplay between cavity QED and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The destructive interference can be induced in the coupled cavity-atom system with a free-space control laser tuned to the normal mode resonance and leads to suppression of the normal mode excitation. Then by adding a pump laser coupled to the four-level atoms from free space, the control-laser induced destructive interference can be reversed and the normal mode excitation is restored. When the free-space control laser is tuned to the atomic resonance and forms a.-type EIT configuration with the cavity-atom system, EIT is manifested as a narrow transmission peak of a weak probe laser coupled into the cavity mode. With the free-space pump laser driving the cavity-confined atoms in a four-level configuration, the narrow transmission peak of the cavity EIT can be split into two peaks and the dressed intra-cavity dark states are created analogous to the dressed states in free space. We report experimental studies of such coherently coupled cavity-atom system realized with cold Rb atoms confined in an optical cavity and discuss possible applications in quantum nonlinear optics and quantum information science.

Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

A study of the semiclassical dynamics of the system was performed, showing bistability and instabilities. In the quantum domain, squeezing in a probe beam having interacted with this system was demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a device whose reflectivity can be controlled optically over a wide frequency band. To this objective, we propose a Fabry-Perot cavity filled with a three-level atomic gas such that the effective susceptibility can be adjusted through incoherent pump and coherent driving fields. Adopting the concepts of electromagnetic-induced transparency and the white light cavity, we can control the susceptibility to break or satisfy the resonance condition over a wide frequency range, resulting in a wide-band optical switch. In addition to numerical calculation, we first give the analytical parameters, such as pump rate, and the Rabi frequency of the driven field, required for white light cavity in this paper. Using such a cavity as a wall of another cavity, we can, optically, realize a wide-band Q-switched cavity. Such a device can also be used as a new type of optical switch for quantum information.

Abstract:Atoms coupled to cavities provide an exciting playground for the study of fundamental interactions of atoms mediated through a common channel. Many of the applications of cavity-QED and cold-atom experiments more broadly, suffer from limitations caused by the transient nature of an atomic loading cycle. The development of continuous operation schemes is necessary to push these systems to the next level of performance. Here we present a machine designed to produce a continuous flux of collimated atoms that traverse an optical cavity. The atom-light interaction is enhanced by a fast-decaying cavity optimal for studying phenomena where atomic properties dominate. We demonstrate the transition to a collective strong coupling regime heralded by a normal-mode splitting. We observe a second phase with a binary normal-mode splitting born from an offset in the mean velocity of the atoms. Inverting the atomic ensemble in the collective strong coupling regime, we measure continuous optical gain. This work sets the stage for studying threshold conditions for continuous collective phenomena, such as continuous superradiant lasing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a long-coherent-time coupling between microwave and optical fields through cold atomic ensembles.The phase information of the microwave field is stored in a coherent superposition state of a cold atomic ensemble and is then read out by two optical fields after 12 ms.A similar operation of mapping the phase of optical fields into a cold atomic ensemble and then retrieving by microwave is also demonstrated.These studies demonstrate that long-coherent-time cold atomic ensembles could resonantly couple with microwave and optical fields simultaneously,which paves the way for realizing high-efficiency,high-bandwidth,and noiseless atomic q uant um converters.

Abstract:We present a scheme to prepare an optical “quantum switch”, a superposition of “open” and “closed” states. The scheme is based on the interaction of an Λ-type three-level atom with a single-mode of quantized cavity field and an external classical driving field, in the regime where the atom and fields are highly detuned. We show how this interaction can be used to generate coherent states of the cavity field in contrast to the usual method used in microwave cavity QED of injecting a coherent state into a cavity. A combination of switches could be used to prepare a quantum superposition of coherent field states located simultaneously in two cavities. Compared with previous proposals, our scheme is simplified due to economizes the Ramsey zone and the time required for the state generation is short.

Interference-assisted population trapping, population inversions and probe gain at one sideband of the Autler-Townes spectrum are predicted for certain cavity resonant frequencies.

Abstract:When a coherently prepared atomic medium is confined in an optical cavity, the atomic coherence and interference manifested by electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be manipulated and enhanced by the collective atom-cavity coupling and the cavity feedback. We present an experimental study of the light transmission through an optical cavity coupled with coherently prepared cold Rb atoms. In the frequency domain, the cavity transmission spectrum exhibits spectral peaks representing the cavity normal modes associated with the multi-atom vacuum Rabi splitting and the intra-cavity dark state manifested by the combined EIT effects of the absorption suppression and the steep normal dispersion. In the time domain, a light pulse coupled into the cavity mode propagates with a slow group velocity and the propagation time delay is significantly increased by the cavity feedback.

Abstract:Cavity-enhanced optical controlling is experimentally observed with a low-control laser power in a cavity-atom ensemble system. Here, the three-level atoms are coupled with two optical modes of a Fabry-Perot cavity, where a new theoretical model is developed to describe the effective three-wave mixing process between spin-wave and optical modes. By adjusting either temperature or cavity length, we demonstrate the precise frequency tuning of the hybrid optical-atomic resonances. When the doubly-resonant condition is satisfied, the probe laser can be easily modulated by a control laser. In addition, interesting non-Hermitian physics are predicted theoretically and demonstrated experimentally, and all-optical switching is also achieved. Such a doubly-resonant cavity-atom ensemble system without a specially designed cavity can be used for future applications, such as optical signal storage and microwave-to-optical frequency conversion.
A Tunable Blue Light Source with Narrow Linewidth for Cold Atom Experiments

Abstract:We present a 397-nm frequency-doubling system with a quasi-phase-matched KTP crystal (PPKTP) which features tunable, narrow linewidth, high power, and excellent mechanical stability. Using 20-mm and 30-mm-long PPKTP crystals, we establish two experimental setups based on different external cavity parameters. By testing the beat signal of these two lasers, the linewidth for the system is measured to be less than 2.5 MHz. The maximum power of blue light can be achieved up to 40 mW. With these performance characteristics, the constructed blue laser system is useful for applications in cold atom physics and precision measurements.

Abstract:We report an experimental scheme of three-channel all-optical switching based on the conversion between single and double dark states in an atom-ring-cavity system driven by a coherent standing-wave coupling field. By turning on and off the counter-propagating part of the coupling field, the switching for the probe field at three different frequencies is simultaneously achieved. We give a theoretical interpretation to the experimental results via the intracavity susceptibility for thermal atoms at different velocities.
