Abstract:By virtue of the general solution of dynamic elasticity equations for transverse isotropy as well as the variable separation method, three-dimensional exact solutions of circular plates are obtained under two types of boundary conditions. The solutions can consider both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric cases. Solutions based on the classical plate theory and Mindlin plate theory are also presented under the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are finally presented and comparisons between the three theories are made.

Abstract:General solutions for coupled three dimensional equations of piezoelectric media were used in this work to obtain some analytical solutions for free vibration of piezoelectric annular plates. These solutions not only satisfy the governing equations at every point in the concerned region but also satisfy the prescribed boundary conditions at every point on the boundaries. Therefore, they are three-dimensional exact. Numerical results are finally tabulated.

Abstract:By employing the general solution for coupled three-dimensional equations of a transversely isotropic piezoelectric body, this paper investigates the free vibration of a circular plate made of piezoelectric material. Three-dimensional exact solutions are then obtained under two specified boundary conditions, which can be used for both axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric cases. Numerical results are finally presented.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, this paper presents the state space equation for axisymmetric deformation of a laminated transversely isotropic annular plate. The Finite Hankel transform is then introduced and applied to the state space equation. Four exact solutions corresponding to four specified boundary conditions are obtained and expressions for displacements and stresses are presented. Numerical results are finally compared with those obtained by the classical plate theory, the Reissner plate theory and the finite element method.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory, this work presents a direct displacement method to investigate the free axisymmetric vibration of transversely isotropic circular plates, whose material is functionally graded and properties obey the exponential law along the thickness direction of the plate. Under two boundary conditions, the solution satisfies all basic equations and the corresponding boundary condition at every point. Thus, it is three-dimensional exact. Numerical examples are presented and compared with previous works. The present method can also be extended to the case of arbitrary distribution of the material properties along the thickness direction of the plate.

Abstract:This work presents an approach named direct displacement method to investigate the free axisymmetric vibrations of transversely isotropic FGM circular plates whose material properties can be varied arbitrarily along the thickness of the plate. If the variation of the material properties obeys the exponential law, three-dimensionally exact solutions are obtained for two specific boundary conditions, which rigorously satisfy, the governing equations and boundary conditions at every point. Alternatively, semi-analytical solutions are obtained for arbitrary variation of material properties. Numerical examples are finally shown to demonstrate the present method.

Abstract:This work investigates the free vibrations of magneto-electro-elastic cylindrical panels based on three-dimensional theory. Firstly, the general solutions for transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elastic materials are introduced and the displacement functions in the general solutions are expanded in trigonometric functions along the circumferential and axial directions. Then an ordinary differential equation of the displacement functions in radial direction is derived and solved. As a result, the frequency equations are obtained through the traction-free conditions on the cylindrical surfaces of the panel as well as the electric and magnetic conditions. For the torsion and thickness-shear modes, the frequency equations in simpler forms are presented. It is found that the magneto-electro-elastic coupling effects disappeared in torsion vibration. Meanwhile, the frequencies of pure elastic materials and magneto-electro-elastic materials have an explicit relation for the thickness-shear modes. The aforementioned solutions satisfy all the governing equations and boundary conditions point by point and they are three-dimensionally exact. Finally the numerical example demonstrates the present method and is compared with those from finite element method. Parametric investigation is also conducted to show the behavior of free vibrations of cylindrical panels.
Exact Solution and Transient Behavior for Torsional Vibration of Functionally Graded Finite Hollow Cylinders

Abstract:Exact solutions are obtained for transient torsional responses of a finitely long, functionally graded hollow cylinder under three different end conditions, i.e. free–free, free–fixed and fixed–fixed. The cylinder with its external surface fixed is subjected to a dynamic shearing stress at the internal surface. The material properties are assumed to vary in the radial direction in a power law form, while keep invariant in the axial direction. With expansion in the axial direction in terms of trigonometric series, the governing equations for the unknown functions about the radial coordinate r and time t are deduced. By applying the variable substitution technique, the superposition method and the separation of variables consecutively, series-form solutions of the equations are obtained. Natural frequencies and the transient torsional responses are finally discussed for a functionally graded finite hollow cylinder.

Abstract:Based on the three-dimensional theory, the axisymmetric bending behavior of functionally graded annular plates made of magneto-electro-elastic, piezoelectric and elastic materials respectively, was investigated. The transverse loads were expanded in terms of a Fourier Bessel series and the solutions corresponding to each item of the series were found by the direct displacement method. Then the superposition principle was utilized to determine the mechanical, electric and magnetic quantities of the annular plates subjected to the arbitrary transverse pressures. It was found that four unusual boundary conditions can be rigorously satisfied at the inner and outer circumferential edges by this method. Meanwhile, the common boundary conditions such as simply supported, clamped and free boundary conditions were approximately satisfied using the Saint-Venant's principle. An innovative isoparametric element was also developed to calculate the axisymmetric behavior of the functionally graded magneto-electro-elasticity for comparison. Abstract:Based on the general solution of transversely isotropic magneto-electro-elasticity in cylindrical coordinates, this paper gives an three-dimensionally exact solution for the free vibration of circular cylinder with two simply supported ends. The two displacement functions in the general solution are expanded in terms of trigonometric functions in the circumferential and axial directions. Then the original three-dimensional problem becomes one-dimensional and is solved readily. The solution satisfies the governing equations and boundary conditions at every point and is three-dimensionally exact. The proposed method can also be extended to circular cylindrical panels.

Abstract:The bending of piezoelectric annular plates is the classic problem in theory of piezoelectric elasticity. The solution of axisymmetric bending of FGPM annular plates subject to arbitrarily transverse loads is not available in the literatures though some solutions for special loads have been derived. For this purpose, this paper analytically studies the axisymmetric bending of functionally graded piezoelectric annular plates subjected to arbitrary transverse loads. Based on the three-dimensional theory of piezoelectricity, this work derives analytical solutions for the axisymmetric bending of piezoelectric annular plates. The transverse loads are expanded in terms of the Fourier-Bessel series, and the solutions corresponding to each item of the series are obtained by the semi-inverse method. The total solutions are then obtained through the superposition principle. The present solutions rigorously satisfies the governing equations when the material properties obey the exponential law along the thickness of the plates. The boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces are completely satisfied while the boundary conditions at the circumferential edges are approximately satisfied based on Saint-Venant's principle.

Abstract:In this paper, free vibration of Mindlin annular plate with arbitrary boundary conditions is investigated by an accurate solution method. The effects of the restrained stiffness of the springs on modal properties are incorporated in the current framework. The displacement components can be expressed as Fourier cosine series plus auxiliary polynomial functions, which aim to eliminate the discontinuities of displacement and its derivatives at both ends and to enhance the convergence of the results effectively. The current solution method can be used to general boundary conditions without changing the calculate method, which is different from the most existing studies. Numerical examples were presented and discussed for several different geometric and material properties as well as distinct boundary conditions.

Abstract:The vibrations of circular, annular, and sector plates are traditionally considered as different boundary value problems and often treated using different solution algorithms and procedures. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the solution for each type of plate typically needs to be adapted to different boundary conditions. In this paper, a simple solution method is proposed for a unified vibration analysis of annular, circular and sector plates with arbitrary boundary conditions. Regardless of the shapes of the plates and the types of boundary conditions, the displacement solutions are invariably expressed as a new and simple form of trigonometric series expansion with an accelerated convergence rate. The unification of seemingly different boundary value problems for the circular and annular plates and their sector counterparts is physically accomplished by applying a set of coupling springs to ensure appropriate continuity conditions along the radial edges. The accuracy, reliability and versatility of the current method are fully demonstrated and verified through numerical examples involving plates with various shapes and boundary conditions. It should be noted that the current method can be easily applied to sector plates with an arbitrary inclusion angle up to 2 π.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. Due to the challenges in mathematical solving, accurate analytical solutions for rectangular thin plates are mainly limited to these plates subject to simple Lévy-type boundary conditions (BCs). Conversely, plates with more complicated BCs are more frequently encountered in practical engineering applications. This study employs the finite integral transform method to analyze the free vibration behavior of isotropic rectangular thin plates with three edges rotationally-restrained and one edge free, which is difficult for other methods. Primarily, the method adopted eliminates the necessity for predetermining trial function for plate deflection, offering simplicity and generality for plate mechanical problems. Furthermore, the approach establishes one way to allow one solving linear algebraic equations instead of handling complex boundary value problems of higher-order vibration partial differential equation (PDE), resulting precise and rapidly converging analytical solutions. Finally, new accurate free vibration studies for plates with four non-Lévy-type BCs and three non-classical BCs are presented via altering the introduced rotating fixed coefficients. The results obtained are contrasted with the numerical simulations from ABAQUS software and existing literature works, confirming the accuracy of this method and providing benchmark results for further exploration of free vibration problems of rectangular plates.

Abstract:A semi-analytical method and related experiments are present in this paper to investigate the free vibration characteristics of the closed-coupled plates with arbitrary spatial coupling angles and curved edges, which are the widely used structural form but researched for the first time. By combining the penalty function method with flexible setting virtual spring stiffness functions and the comprehensive relative motion relation matrices along the edges of the plates system, various types of boundary and spatial coupling connection conditions in practical engineering can be constructed. The semi-analytical solution formulas for the entire vibration model are established by using the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the two-dimensional Jacobian differential quadrature method (JDQM). To fulfill the requirements of integral operations for displacement approximation functions, the irregular domain mapping technique is employed to transform the irregular solving domain into the regular basic domain. The accuracy and applicability of the present method in predicting eigenfrequencies and mode shapes are proved by hammer modal tests concerning four pyramid/frustum-like built-up plates, comparisons with results from the open literature, as well as the finite element method (FEM) simulations of several specially designed cases. Moreover, many meaningful conclusions are drawn regarding the effects of spatial geometric parameters on the free vibration characteristics of spatially closed-coupled plates with curved edges.

Abstract:Due to the performance requirements, structural discontinuities are inevitable in engineering structures. Free vibration of an elastically connected annular plate system with discontinuities has not yet been reported in the literature. In this study, an analytical method is developed for the free vibration of an annular plate system with discontinuities along its radius. The annular plates are connected continuously using an elastic layer. The coupled vibration equations of the annular plate system were decoupled into a series of uncoupled general "vibration" equations which are then transferred into a symplectic dual system. The general "vibration" state can then be analytically described in terms of waves utilizing the elastic wave theory. Using the analytical wave modes and satisfying the compatibility and boundary conditions at the discontinuities, a frequency equation can be obtained analytically. In numerical examples, the free vibrations of systems consist of two and three annular plates were investigated. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparison with literature and finite element method (FEM).

Abstract:This paper presents an exact analysis of the free vibration of simply supported, transversely isotropic cylindrical panels. Based on the three dimensional elasticity for transversely isotropic media, three displacement functions are introduced so that the equations of motion are uncoupled and simplified. After expanding these functions with orthogonal series, the equations of free vibration problems are further reduced to three second order ordinary differential equations. A modified Bessel function solution with complex arguments is then directly used for the case of complex eigenvalues, which, to the authors’ knowledge, has never been reported before. To clarify the correctness and effectiveness of the developed method, numerical examples are presented and compared to the results of existent papers.

Abstract:A generalized Fourier series solution based on the first-order shear deformation theory is presented for the free vibrations of moderately thick rectangular plates with variable thickness and arbitrary boundary conditions, a class of problem which is of practical interest and fundamental importance but rarely attempted in the literatures. Unlike in most existing studies where solutions are often developed for a particular type of boundary conditions, the current method can be generally applied to a wide range of boundary conditions with no need of modifying solution algorithms and procedures. Under the current framework, the one displacement and two rotation functions are generally sought, regardless of boundary conditions, as an improved trigonometric series in which several supplementary functions are introduced to remove the potential discontinuities with the displacement components and its derivatives at the edges and to accelerate the convergence of series representations. All the series expansion coefficients are treated as the generalized coordinates and solved using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The effectiveness and reliability of the presented solution are demonstrated by comparing the present results with those results published in the literatures and finite element method (FEM) data, and numerous new results for moderately thick rectangular plates with nonuniform thickness and elastic restraints are presented, which may serve as benchmark solution for future researches.
