Abstract:A novel hydrated rare earth polyborate, Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] (Ln=Pr, Nd) has been synthesized by using boric acid as a flux at 200 degrees C. Its crystal structure is established by powder X-ray diffraction technique. Ln[B5O8(OH)(2)] crystallizes in monoclinic space groupP2(1)/c. The title compounds consist of a double three-membered ring composed of three BO4 and two BO3 groups as the fundamental building block. The FBB shares four common oxygen atoms with the adjacent FBBs, producing a borate layer containing nine-membered borate ring window, of which the rare earth cations are located around the center. The Ln(3+) cations are coordinated with ten oxygen atoms from the nine-membered ring window and the adjacent borate layer. The borate layers are stacked along the b axis and are interlinked by the Ln-O bond.

Abstract:Single crystal of hydrated sodium borate Na(2)B(5)O(8)(OH).2H(2)O has been grown with sizes up to 5 x 5 x 3 mm(3) under mild hydrothermal conditions at 180 degrees C. The structure is determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and further characterized by IR and TG analyses. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pna2(1), with a = 11.967(2) A, b = 6.5320(13) A, c = 11.126(2) A, Z = 4, R1 = 0.0183, and wR2 = 0.0483. The crystal structure of Na(2)B(5)O(8)(OH).2H(2)O is made up of Na-O polyhedra, and [B(5)O(8)(OH)](2-) polyborate anions. Transmittance spectrum is performed on the Na(2)B(5)O(8)(OH).2H(2)O crystal, which shows an absorption edge less than 190 nm in the UV region. The powder second-harmonic generation intensity measured by the Kurtz-Perry method indicates that Na(2)B(5)O(8)(OH).2H(2)O is about half that of KH(2)PO(4) (KDP).

Abstract:A new noncentrosymmetric polyborate, Li6Rb5B11O22, has been designed and synthesized in the Li2O–Rb2O–B2O3 ternary system. The structure of the title compound was solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2. The new structure contains an infinite three-dimensional matrix that is built from B11O22 building blocks and LiOn (n = 4, 5), RbOn (n = 9, 10) polyhedra. The B11O22 building block has not been reported previously in any anhydrous and hydrated borates. The optical characterization of the compound indicates that its UV cutoff edge is below 190 nm. IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and second-harmonic generation were also performed on the reported material.

Abstract:The structure of a new synthetic compound, diammonium tetrahydroxydecaborate monohydrate, has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in triclinic space group P\overline 1 and all atoms occupy general sites. The title compound is composed of [B10O15(OH)4]4− ions as the fundamental building blocks, and these are linked end-to-end by sharing two common O atoms, thus producing infinite chains of composition [B10O14(OH)4] n 2n–. These chains are linked by hydrogen bonds, thus forming borate sheets. Water molecules and ammonium ions between these sheets connect adjacent sheets via hydrogen bonds.

Abstract:Boric acid is used as a flux and reactant to synthesize a novel hydrated rare earth polyborate, La[B5O8(OH)(H(2)o)]NO3 center dot 2H(2)O. The structure of the title compound is established by single X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in monoclinic structures(P2(1)/n) and consists of a double three-membered ring composed of three BO4 and two BO3 groups as the fundamental building block(FBB). The FBB shares four common oxygen atoms with the the adjacent FBBs producing a borate layer containing nine-membered borate ring window. Lanthanum cations are located around the center of the nine-membered ring. The borate layers are stacked along the b axis and are inter-linked by the La-O bond. Nitrate ions and some water molecules are sandwiched between the borate layers. This study further demonstrates that the low temperature synthesis approach by using molten boric acid as a flux is effective for the syntheses of hydrated rare earth polyborates.

Abstract:Using hydrothermal techniques, two new compounds-strontium borate SrBO2(OH) and barium polyborate Ba3B6O9(OH)(6)-have been prepared. The structures of the title compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the structure of SrBO2(OH), the Sr2+ ion is surrounded by eight oxygen atoms and the borate ion is identified as an individual [BO2(OH)](2-) group. The structure of Ba3B6O9(OH)(6) can be regarded as constructed from anionic borate chains, the negative charges of which are compensated for by the Ba2+ cations residing between the adjacent chains. The unusual feature of this compound can also be described in terms of infinite chains of B3O3 six-membered rings sharing B atoms, which are all tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms. The materials have also been characterized by infrared and energy dispersive spectroscopies, thermal analysis, and second harmonic generation powder measurement.

Abstract:Sr4Ba3(BO3)3.83H2.5, as the second compound to combine borate and hydride ions, has been synthesized by a mechanochemical synthesis route. The structure has been elucidated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction and determined to crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric space group P63mc (186) with the cell parameters a=10.87762(15) Å and c=6.98061(11) Å. A detailed investigation of the compound by vibrational spectroscopy in combination with Density Functional Theory calculations reveals the disordered nature of the structure and proves the presence of both borate and hydride ions. Electronic band structure calculations predict a large band gap of 7.1 eV. Hydride states are predicted at the topmost valence band, which agrees well with earlier reported heteroanionic hydrides. We hereby were able to successfully apply previously synthetic and analytical schemes to introduce another member of the rare compounds that contain complex oxoanions simultaneously with hydride ions.

Abstract:Single crystals of Rb2CaB8O26H24, a new noncentrosymmetric borate material, have been grown with sizes up to 8 9 5 9 3 mm(3) by the slow evaporation of water solution at room temperature. The structure of the compound was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 11.5288(3) angstrom, b = 12.6 334(4) angstrom, c = 16.6966(4) angstrom, Z = 4 and R-1 = 0.0405, wR(2) = 0.1043. Ultraviolet (UV)-vis spectrum transmission is performed on the Rb2CaB8O26H24, which shows an absorption edge about 195 nm in the UV region. Thermal properties were investigated by TG-DSC analysis. The powder second-harmonic generation (SHG) intensity measured by the Kurtz-Perry method indicates that Rb2CaB8O26H24 has about one-third of KDP (KH2PO4). The influence of different molar ratios and evaporation speed of water solution on crystal quality and size was also performed on the reported material.

Abstract:A series of new polyborates have been synthesized using hydrothermal and solvothermal techniques. The structures of these compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound Pb6B11O18(OH)(9) (1), which crystallized from a hydrothermall system in the trigonal P3(2) space group, has a novel chiral structure consisting of infinite helical chains and finite chain fragments built up from BO4 and BO3 units. Two alkaline-earth metal borate compounds Ba3B6O9(OH)(6) (2) and SrBO2(OH) (3) were also prepared from a hydrothermal system. The structure of 2 (space group P2/c) can be regarded as constructed from anionic borate chains of B3O3 Six-membered rings sharing B atoms, which are all tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms. In the structure of 3 (space group Prima), the Sr2+ ion is surrounded by eight oxygen atoms and the borate ion is identified as an isolated [BO2(OH)](2-) group. In addition, we obtained two metal-complex containing borates - Zn(C2H8N2)(3)B5O7(OH)(3) (4) and CO(C2H8N2)(3)B5O7(OH)(3) (5), which are isostructural (space group P2(1)/c) with each other, from a nonaqueous system. The crystal structures of 4 and 5 are characterized by the chiral M(en)(3)(2+) (M = Zn, Co) cations and the isolated B5O7(OH)(3)(2-) groups. It can be seen that the wide variability of borate crystal chemistry allows the creation of very different structure types.

Abstract:A new magnesium borate mineral, Mg[B6O7(OH)(6)]center dot 5H(2)O was synthesized via dilution method from boron-bearing Na-K-Mg-Cl-SO4 salt lakes. The crystal structure of the new phase was solved and refined using Xray powder diffraction data and characterized with FTIR and Raman. Its asymmetric unit consists of one Mg atom, one B6O7(OH)(6) cluster and five H2O molecules. The Mg atom is 6-coordinated with six O atoms to faun a MgO6 octahedron. Thermal gravimetry (TG/DSC) was used to investigate the thermal behavior of the new compound. During the high temperature decomposition process the dehydrated product MgB4O7 formed. The optical absorption characteristic of this new mineral was investigated by UV-Vis spectrometer and its energy gap E-g is about 4.44 eV.

Abstract:A new mixed-metal polyborate, Na5Li[B12O18(OH)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), has been synthesized using solvothermal method and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UVeVis spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R-3c (No. 167) with unit cell parameters of a = b = 9.6767(6) angstrom, c = 36.358(5) angstrom, and Z = 6. Its structure features unprecedented 3D framework constructed from novel honeycomb-shaped inorganic Na-O sheets with unique 12-MR sodium rings and supramolecular polyborate 2D layers of lithium-centered [B12O18(OH)(6)](6-). Abstract:Two new metal borates, K[B7O9(OH)5]·Hen (1, en = enthylenediamine) and Na2Cs4Ba2[B12O18(OH)6]·4(OH) (2) have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Their structures were determined by the single crystal X-ray diffraction and were further characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction, respectively. 1 crystallizes in the triclinic system, P-1 space group, a = 7.7152(6), b = 8.4057(6), c = 12.1319(10) Å, α = 92.505(6), β = 98.944(7), γ = 103.825(6)°, Z = 2. 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, Pmn21 space group, a = 12.6972(6) Å, b = 13.7037(6) Å, c = 9.4968(5) Å, Z = 2. Compound 1 consists of isolated [B7O9(OH)5]2− clusters which are held together through H-bonding interactions and K atoms to form a 3-D supramolecular framework. For 2, bowl-like isolated [B12O18(OH)6]6− clusters were linked together to form a 3-D framework by different metal ions and H-bond system.

Abstract:Two new bismuth hydroxyl borates, Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] (I) and Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II), have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Their structures were determined by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, respectively. Compound I crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with the lattice constants of a = 6.0268(3) Å, b = 11.3635(6) Å, and c = 19.348(1) Å. Compound II crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cm with the lattice constants of a = 5.4676(6) Å, b = 14.6643(5) Å, c = 3.9058(1) Å, and β = 135.587(6)°. The borate fundamental building block (FBB) in I is a three-ring unit [B(3)O(6)(OH)](4-), which connects one by one via sharing corners, forming an infinite zigzag chain along the a direction. The borate chains are further linked by hydrogen bonds, showing as a borate layer within the ab plane. The FBB in II is an isolated [BO(2)(OH)](2-) triangle, which links to two neighboring FBBs by strong hydrogen bonds, resulting in a borate chain along the a direction. Both compounds contain [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers, and the [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers combine with the corresponding borate layers alternatively, forming the whole structures. These two new bismuth borates are the first ones containing [Bi(2)O(2)](2+) layers in borates. The appearance of Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)] (II) completes the series of compounds Bi(2)O(2)[BO(2)(OH)], Bi(2)O(2)CO(3), and Bi(2)O(2)[NO(3)(OH)] and the formation of Bi(2)O(2)[B(3)O(5)(OH)] provides another example in demonstrating the polymerization tendency of borate groups.
