Abstract:A thick film wearable solvent-free epoxy anticorrosive coatings has been developed,which is composed of bisphenol-F epoxy resin as binder and,wearable flake filler,additive,and aliphatic amine.It is characterized by its thick coat,fast curing,excellent wear-resistance,good adhesion and excellent salt fog performance.It can be used for anti-corrosilines of siphon of long pipelines,oceanic constructions, and anti-corrosion of the traversing tube of underground pipelines.

Abstract:Aluminum alloy is widely used in many fields for its excellent performance. However, in practical application, aluminum alloy is easy to become corroded and be invalidated, owing to the influence of environmental factors. Some pollutants or corrosive media q5 its surface adhesion will further deepen the failure rate of aluminum alloy, resulting in a large amount of workforce waste, waste of material and financial resources, and energy consumption. So the anti-corrosion and anti-fouling treatment of aluminum alloy surfaces to expand their practical application range and reduce energy loss are of great significance. In this paper, we first summarize the types of anti-corrosion and anti-fouling coatings on aluminum alloy surfaces. We found that superhydrophobic coating has attracted widespread attention recently because of its surface's non-wetting and low surface energy characteristics. The superhydrophobic coating refers to a coating with a water contact angle on its surface greater than 150° and a sliding angle of less than 10°. Preparing superhydrophobic coatings on the surface of aluminum alloy can improve the corrosion resistance and anti-pollutant adhesion ability at the same time. Therefore, in the following part of the review, the preparation methods of superhydrophobic coatings on aluminum alloy surfaces for anti-corrosion and anti-fouling and the significant problems encountered in the practical application of the superhydrophobic coating on aluminum alloy surfaces, such as poor anti-corrosion durability and poor mechanical stability, and the existing methods to solve these critical problems, are summarized and discussed in detail. Finally, we put forward some new solutions to solve these vital issues.

Abstract:With the rapid development of marine engineering, effective antifouling and anti-corrosion technologies are essential for ensuring the safety and longevity of marine facilities. This review synthesizes current research on various coating technologies designed to combat marine biological fouling and corrosion. It analyzes the causes of marine biological fouling and corrosion, discusses their potential impacts on the safety of ships and marine structures, and emphasizes the need for effective protective systems. The review covers current antifouling coating technologies, including the preparation of low-surface-energy coatings, conductive coatings, biomimetic coatings, polysiloxane coatings, polyurea coatings, epoxy coatings, polyurethane coatings, and high-entropy alloy coatings. Anti-corrosion coatings are also discussed, with a focus on the characteristics of epoxy, polyurethane, and polyurea coatings, as well as metal-based coatings, alongside their corrosion resistance in marine environments. Based on existing research, the review summarizes ongoing challenges in marine antifouling and anti-corrosion coating technologies, and offers perspectives on future research directions and technological developments.

Abstract:Organic coatings for marine applications must have great corrosion protection and antifouling performance. This review presents an overview of recent investigations into coating microstructure, corrosion protection performance, antifouling behavior, and evaluation methods, particularly the substrate effect and environmental influence on coating protectiveness, aiming to improve operational practice in the coating industry. The review indicates that the presence of defects in an organic coating is the root cause of the corrosion damage of the coating. The protection performance of a coating system can be enhanced by proper treatment of the substrate and physical modification of the coating. Environmental factors may synergistically accelerate the coating degradation. The long-term protection performance of a coating system is extremely difficult to predict without coating defect information. Non-fouling coating and self-repairing coatings may be promising antifouling approaches. Based on the review, some important research topics are suggested, such as the exploration of rapid evaluation methods, the development of long-term cost-effective antifouling coatings in real marine environments.

Abstract:This work focuses on different surface treatment processes of the 6061 aluminum alloy profile coatings in the construction industry, mainly including the sand powder film coating, the flat powder coating, the hard anodized film, and the ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating. The corrosion resistance of the coated aluminum alloy in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution (pH 6.5–7.5) and the influence of different surface treatment processes on the corrosion resistance of different samples were studied by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrochemical workstation. The result shows that with the increase in corrosion time, the corrosion inhibition performance of the four coated aluminum alloy materials decreased significantly, and the order of decline is: sand powder film coating > hard anodized film > flat powder coating > ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating. When corroded in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 2 h, the corrosion inhibition performances of the flat powder coating and ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating are poor, while the inhibition performances of the sand powder film coating and hard anodized film are good, and the inhibition performance follows the following sequence: the sand powder film coating > hard anodized film> the flat powder coating > ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating. When corroded in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 200 h, the corrosion inhibition performances of the sand powder film coating and the flat powder coating are poor, while the inhibition performances of hard anodized film and ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating are good, and the inhibition performance follows the following sequence: hard anodized film > ordinary heat-sealing oxidized coating > the sand powder film coating > the flat powder coating.

Abstract:Corrosion-inhibiting coatings (i.e., pretreatments) are used in the production of painted aluminum surfaces. This paper compares the surface compositional changes as they occur during the chemical coating of 3003 aluminum alloy. Several commercial coatings are examined and chemically identified by a combination of Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy. Corrosion-inhibiting coatings are classified by their chemical composition. Commercial pretreatments include at least two types of coatings: (a) those which produce a chemically different protective layer without regard to effluents, and (b) those designed to decrease environmental problems (i.e., cyanide-free), while still providing a protective layer. Finally, the corrosion resistance of pretreatments plus a commercial coil coating acrylic paint under accelerated test conditions has been determined.

Abstract:Considering the development of China's strategic goal of "ocean power", aluminum alloy components, such as the deck and keel used on the ship surface, face the risk of corrosion failure during long-term service. Currently, the method of preparing a film or coating on the surface of aluminum alloys is typically used to isolate the corrosive medium and effectively protect the matrix material. Among these, thermal spraying technology is widely used for the preparation of anti-corrosion coatings on the surface of aluminum alloys owing to its simple operation and because it is not limited by the size of the parts. Aluminum reference crystal materials have a high strength and hardness owing to their unique structure and excellent properties such as a low friction and corrosion resistance. Thus, they have high potential as protective coating materials on the surface of a new generation of aluminum alloys; however, the poor bonding strength and corrosion resistance in the preparation of quasicrystalline (QC) coatings limit their application. Therefore, in this study, AlCuFe and AlCuFeSc QC coatings are prepared on aluminum alloy substrates using explosive spraying technology based on the long-term service conditions of aluminum alloy parts in a marine environment to improve the corrosion resistance of aluminum alloys and increase their service life. First, the microstructures and phase structures of the powder and coating are characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Subsequently, the binding force and corrosion resistance of the coating are analyzed using a tensile testing machine and electrochemical workstation, and the influence of the QC phase content and corrosion resistance of the coating are studied. The tests reveal that the powder and coating are composed of a I-Al65Cu20Fe15 QC phase and small amount of the beta-AlFe phase. The AlCuFe and AlCuFeSc coatings prepared by explosive spraying have a high density and demonstrate good bonding with the substrate; the bonding strengths of the coatings are determined to be 51.9 MPa and 51.2 MPa, respectively. After annealing at 700 celcius, the content of the coating QC phase increases from 49%, 38% to 93.2%, 92.5%, respectively. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the QC coating before annealing is similar to that of the substrate, and the self-corrosion current density of the annealed QC coating is only one-fifth of that of the aluminum alloy substrate. A further comparison of the surface morphologies of the coatings with different QC contents reveales that as the QC content increases, the flatness of the coating surface increases and the pore distribution decreases, which can effectively prevent the entry of corrosive media. This suggests that an increase in the QC content enhances the corrosion resistance of the coating. The salt-water static hanging test simultaneously demonstrates that no apparent corrosion area formes on the annealed coating surface after 336 h, and the aluminum oxide passivating layer that forms on the surface provides a good protection for the substrate as the content of the QC phase increases. The stability of the QC phase I improves by the introduction of the Sc element into the Al-Cu-Fe icosahedron. This study provides a new idea for the corrosion protection of aluminum alloy surfaces used in ships and a basis for the preparation and application of aluminum reference crystal coatings.
Comparative Study on the Degradation of Two Self-Polishing Antifouling Coating Systems with Copper-Based Antifouling Agents

Abstract:The degradation processes of two self-polishing antifouling coatings containing copper-based agents (CuSCN and Cu2O) in 3.5% NaCl solution and the protection effect of the coating systems were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS) methods. The results demonstrate that after immersion for 1525 d at room temperature, the two coating systems still have very good protection property for the 5083 Al alloy substrate, manifesting by the high value of the low-frequency impedance. Alternate high and low temperature immersion test (45 °C 12 h + 25 °C 12 h) leads to serious damage to the antifouling topcoat, and the failure is mainly manifested by many micro-pores and micro-cracks. Because the CuSCN antifouling agent particle has bigger diameter and slightly bigger solubility than that of Cu2O agent, the micro-pores established after the agents dissolved and released during the hydrolysis process of the antifouling coating are relatively bigger, which results in more decrease in the impedance and a worse protective property of the coating system for the substrate.

Abstract:Since thermally sprayed zinc and aluminum coatings were invented 100 years ago, they have realized extensive industrial applications for steel structure protection in a variety of fields for nearly 100 years and have been proven to be effective and reliable. However, it has seldom been reported in the ship industry in China since many workers worry about the risk of rapid corrosion, especially in harsh environments such as the South China Sea. In this paper, three kinds of arc-sprayed zinc aluminum coatings were tested to choose the best coating system for application on the research vessel Yongle by electrochemical behavior and a long-term atmospheric exposure experiment. The variation of the corrosion rate and the bonding strength was used to clarify the long-term protection performance. The results show that Zn15Al has the lowest corrosion (Rp larger than 2200 Ω·cm2) among the three kinds of coatings and has a bonding strength larger than 6.38 MPa after a 5 year test. The performance of the coatings in the South China Sea indicates that they can provide excellent protection for the hull above the waterline of the Yongle vessel in the 3 year test. It could be predicted that thermally sprayed zinc aluminum coating has vast application potential in the South China Sea due to its excellent anticorrosion performance.

Preparation of Superhydrophobic Coating on 5083 Aluminum Alloy for Corrosion Protection in Simulated Marine Environment Containing SRB

Abstract:In this report, the pitting corrosion behavior of the 5083 aluminum alloy under 3.5% NaCl solution and microbial corrosion environment was studied. The microstructure of the 5083 alloy before and after sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) influenced corrosion was characterized by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analysis. The result showed the pitting corrosion rate of the alloy was increased by nearly 7 times from 3.5 wt % NaCl solution to SRB-containing environment, which was indicated by a surface corrosion pit size of 1.06 microns for aluminum alloy in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution environment, and a surface corrosion pit size of 7.02 microns in SRB-containing environment. To enhance the properties of corrosion resistance, a superhydrophobic fluoro silane coating was prepared on 5083 aluminum alloy. The prepared alloy with coating was analyzed by contact angle measurement, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and electrochemistry methods. The superhydrophobic coating, mainly composed of amorphous phase, exhibited good corrosion resistance. The modification of aluminum alloy with superhydrophobic coating increased the AC impedance significantly and shifted the corrosion potential to the positive direction, suggesting the coating has a good protective effect against the aluminum alloy corrosion.

Abstract:The corrosion caused by marine organisms adhering to the wall surface is one of the main reasons for the failure of ships and equipment, and leads to shortened life and increased maintenance costs, and this has seriously affected the development of the national economy. Therefore, it is very important to develop a new composite material to protect the metal substrate from biological corrosion. In this article, a superhydrophobic surface was prepared by simply spraying silicone rubber emulsion containing hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles onto a graphene silicone rubber (GSR) pre-coated substrate (SiO 2 -GSR). The antifouling ability was investigated under laboratory conditions and real marine environments, and the results show that the SiO 2 -GSR coating has good antiadhesion effect and longer antifouling ability. The anticorrosion performance was evaluated by electrochemistry methods, and the SiO 2 -GSR has good corrosion resistance ability. Additionally, the SiO 2 -GSR film still exhibited a strong antifouling and anticorrosion ability after immersed in marine environment for 6 months. Therefore, SiO 2 -GSR can be applied to the maritime field as an effective antifouling and anticorrosion coating.

Abstract:Zn-Al coatings have attention to corrosion resistance in marine environments. In this study, Zn and Al single coatings, and Zn-Al mixed coating were obtained by an arc spray technique on carbon steel substrates. Zn and Al coatings comprised single Zn and Al phases, and some oxides. Zn-Al coating was composed of 46 at.% Al, 53 at.% Zn, and a few of oxygen. Zn-Al coating was a pseudo-alloy coating mechanically mixed with Zn, Al, and alloy phases. The cross-sectional microhardness values of Zn, Al, and Zn-Al coatings were 173.8 HV 0.5 , 181.69 HV 0.5 , and 259.88 HV 0.5 , respectively. The friction coefficients of Al, Zn, and Zn-Al coatings were 0.7, 0.55, and 0.5, respectively. The wear and corrosion resistances of Zn-Al coating were better compared with single metallic coatings. The corrosion mechanisms of single Zn, Al coatings, and Zn-Al coatings were addressed and studied. Zn-Al coating could offer better wear resistance and anticorrosion performance for marine engineering steel, compared with Zn and Al coatings.

Abstract:This study aimed to prepare a superhydrophobic coating by applying low surface energy (LSE) materials to a rough surface, intending to achieve a corrosion-resistant coating. Polyurethane (PU) and fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) were synthesized via designed routes as LSE materials. Arc-sprayed aluminum (Al) coatings and 316L stainless steel substrates (316L SS) were used as the rough and smooth surfaces, respectively. The synthesized PU/FPU coatings were formed on the Al coatings and 316L SS, and their hydrophobicity and corrosion resistance were evaluated. The water contact angle test showed that the content of the fluorine and the concentration of the PU/FPU could affect the hydrophobicity of the surface. In addition, superhydrophobicity was achieved via applying FPU to a rough Al coating surface (Al-FPU coating). Furthermore, the Al-FPU coating also exhibited better corrosion resistance than that of the PU and the pure Al coatings according to Tafel polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectra in artificial seawater. The results suggested that surface energy and surface roughness were correlated with hydrophobicity, and the modification via fluorinating can be an effective method to achieve superhydrophobicity and corrosion resistance for thermal-sprayed coatings.

Abstract:There are a large number of fouling organisms in the ocean, which easily attach to the surface of ships, oil platforms and breeding facilities, corrode the surface of equipment, accelerate the aging of equipment, affect the stability and safety of marine facilities and cause serious economic losses. Antifouling coating is an effective method to prevent marine biological fouling. Traditional organic tin and copper oxide coatings are toxic and will contaminate seawater and destroy marine ecology and have been banned or restricted. Environmentally friendly antifouling coatings have become a research hotspot. Among them, the use of natural biological products with antifouling activity as antifouling agents is an important research direction. In addition, some fouling release coatings without antifoulants, biomimetic coatings, photocatalytic coatings and other novel antifouling coatings have also developed rapidly. On the basis of revealing the mechanism of marine biofouling, this paper reviews the latest research strategies to develop environmentally friendly marine antifouling coatings. The composition, antifouling characteristics, antifouling mechanism and effects of various coatings were analyzed emphatically. Finally, the development prospects and future development directions of marine antifouling coatings are forecasted.

Abstract:An Al coating was sprayed on S355 steel using a cold spraying. The surface–interface morphologies, chemical compositions, and phases of the obtained Al coating were analyzed using a field emission scanning electronic microscope (FESEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and X-ray diffractometer (XRD), respectively, and the chemical element distributions of Al coating surface and interface were also analyzed using a plane scan, and line scan, respectively. The salt spray corrosion (SSC) of cold sprayed Al coating was investigated using a neutral salt spray (NSS) test, the corrosion products on the Al coating were also analyzed using an EDS and XRD. The result shows that the cold sprayed Al coating is composed of Al phase, the Al particles are distorted when colliding with the substrate, the interface bonding mode is a mechanical bonding. The cold sprayed Al coating is covered with a stable corrosion products, which effectively prevents the coating from further SSC, showing an excellent corrosion resistance. The Al coating has appropriate cathodal protection potential, the corrosion rate of Al coating declines with the time in the electrochemical test.

Abstract:Due to its excellent performance, aluminum alloys are frequently used in wheels, but the corrosion of aluminum alloy wheels is still a major problem to be further studied. To understand the corrosion of the wheels, it is important to consider the role of the organic coating in the corrosion process. Meanwhile, it is also meaningful to find an effective method to remove the organic coating properly to investigate the corrosion products under the organic coating. In this paper, the corrosion status of the A356 aluminum alloy substrate under an organic coating was observed firstly; lipid solutions such as NMP solution and butyl acrylate solution were used to remove the coating, and comparative experiments were carried out by controlling factors such as the soaking temperature, time, composition of solution etc. to find out the optimized soaking method to remove the organic coating; finally, the morphology of the localized corrosion on the aluminum alloy surface and the composition and structure of the corrosion products on the aluminum alloy substrate were analyzed. Results show that the corrosion products mainly contain ZrO 2 , Zr 3 O 2 F 8 , AlO(OH), and Al 2 O 3 . The corrosion process prefers to initiate at the defects where the coating and the substrate are not tightly bonded. This work shows the corrosion behavior of the aluminum alloy under an organic coating and provides a useful method to remove the organic coating from the aluminum alloy substrate effectively, and the results can be valuable for the understanding and mitigation of metal corrosion under an organic coating.

Evaluation of aluminum coatings in simulated marine environment

Abstract:Corrosion of steel in marine environment induces great financial losses. One of the methods used to reduce the corrosion of steel is surface coating by appropriate materials. In this study, steel has been coated with aluminum by using the electric arc spray process. Samples were then submitted to heat treatments in air between 200 and 600°C. They were then submitted to corrosion tests by immersion in synthetic sea-water (3.5% NaCl at pH=8). The aluminum coatings are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive analysis (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD and EDS results indicated that the coatings consist essentially of pure Al. An amorphous phase of Al2O3 was detected on the surface of the samples treated above 200°C. SEM investigations combined to EDS analysis of the interfaces revealed the formation of two kinds of alloys: an FeAl in the range 200–400°C and an Fe2Al5 above 400°C. Dissolution tests showed that iron dissolution, through the coating, decreases with increasing annealing temperature.

Abstract:Marine biofouling presents numerous challenges, including increased drag, reduced efficiency, and ecological imbalance. This review presents an overview of recent advances in antifouling coatings. First, essential preparation techniques such as cold spray, plasma spray, magnetron sputtering, and laser cladding are introduced, including the specific characteristics of each method. Next, the antifouling performance of Cu-doped and Ag-doped coating is analyzed. Emphasis is placed on the differences in coating composition, preparation methods, and their effects on antifouling and anticorrosion properties. The future development of antifouling technologies is also discussed, emphasizing the creation of multifunctional coatings, the optimization of coating microstructures for better performance, and the advancement of sustainable materials to minimize environmental impact.

Abstract:The marine environment has caused significant economic losses to marine engineering machinery, and the exploitation of simple, environmentally friendly, economical, mechanically durable marine protective coatings is imminent. This article provides a comprehensive review of the recent research advancements in marine metal protective coatings, such as superhydrophobic coatings, micro-arc oxidation coatings, laser cladding coatings, and graphene nano-anticorrosion coatings. The review explores their respective anticorrosion strategies, anticorrosion and wear-resistant mechanisms, preparation processes, and influencing factors. Ultimately, it summarizes the challenges in the practical application of marine coatings in marine corrosion protection, which provides an outlook on the future direction of coating development. The application of marine anticorrosion and wear-resistant coatings provides reliable protection to ensure the regular operation of marine resource development facilities.
