Abstract:We propose a novel optical design of organic solar cell with a hybrid plasmonic system, which comprises a plasmonic cavity coupled with a dielectric core-metal shell nanosphere. From a rigorous solution of Maxwell's equations, called volume integral equation method, optical absorption of the active polymer material has a four-fold increase. The significant enhancement mainly attributes to the coupling of symmetric surface wave modes supported by the cavity resonator. The dispersion relation of the plasmonic cavity is characterized by solving an 1D eigenvalue problem of the air/metal/polymer/metal/air structure with finite thicknesses of metal layers. We demonstrate that the optical enhancement strongly depends on the decay length of surface plasmon waves penetrated into the active material. Furthermore, the coherent interplay between the cavity and the dielectric core-metal shell nanosphere is undoubtedly confirmed by our theoretical model. The work offers detailed physical explanations to the hybrid plasmonic cavity device structure for enhancing the optical absorption of organic photovoltaics. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optoplasmonic materials are metallo-dielectric hybrid structures that combine metallic and dielectric components in defined geometries in which plasmonic and photonic modes synergistically interact. These beneficial interactions can be harnessed by integrating plasmonic nanoantennas into defined photonic environments generated, for instance, by discrete optical resonators or extended systems of diffractively coupled nanoparticles. Optoplasmonic structures facilitate photonic-plasmonic mode coupling and offer degrees of freedom for creating optical fields with predefined amplitude and phase in space and time that are absent in conventional photonic or plasmonic structures. This Perspective reviews the fundamental electromagnetic mechanisms underlying selected optoplasmonic approaches with an emphasis on materials available through template-guided self-assembly strategies.

Abstract:A multiphysics study carries out on plasmonic organic solar cells (OSCs) by solving Maxwell's equations and semiconductor (Poisson, drift-diffusion, and continuity) equations simultaneously with unified finite-difference framework. (See Applied Physics Letters, 101, 223302, 2012; and Optics Express, 20, 2572-2580, 2012.) Regarding the Maxwell's equations, the perfectly matched layer and periodic boundary conditions are imposed at the vertical and lateral directions of OSCs to simulate the infinite air region and metallic grating electrode, respectively. In view of the semiconductor equations, the Scharfetter-Gummel scheme and semi-implicit strategy are adopted respectively in the space and time domains. To model the bulk heterojunction OSCs, the Langevin bimolecular recombination and Onsager-Braun exciton dissociation models are fully taken into account. The exciton generation rate depending on the optical absorption of the organic active material can be obtained by solving the Maxwell's equations and will be inserted into the semiconductor equations. Through the exciton generation rate, we seamlessly connect the optical with the electrical properties of plasmonic OSCs.

Abstract:A hybrid nonlinear optical component is described based on a Au–PAA metal–dielectric assembly, which exhibits unconventional self-defocusing and inverse optical switching behavior. This heteronanostructure realizes SPR-induced nonlinear optics that enable an ultra-low threshold and an extraordinarily high nonlinear response. Such an SPR-induced nonlinear response can be further manipulated by more complex host–guest configuration such as Au–PAA–Au–C60. Abstract:Hybrid plasmonic devices involve a nanostructured metal supporting localized surface plasmons to amplify light-matter interaction, and a non-plasmonic material to functionalize charge excitations. Application-relevant epitaxial heterostructures, however, give rise to ballistic ultrafast dynamics that challenge the conventional semiclassical understanding of unidirectional nanometal-to-substrate energy transfer. We study epitaxial Au nanoislands on WSe$_2$ with time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and femtosecond electron diffraction: this combination of techniques resolves material, energy and momentum of charge-carriers and phonons excited in the heterostructure. We observe a strong non-linear plasmon-exciton interaction that transfers the energy of sub-bandgap photons very efficiently to the semiconductor, leaving the metal cold until non-radiative exciton recombination heats the nanoparticles on hundreds of femtoseconds timescales. Our results resolve a multi-directional energy exchange on timescales shorter than the electronic thermalization of the nanometal. Electron-phonon coupling and diffusive charge-transfer determine the subsequent energy flow. This complex dynamics opens perspectives for optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications, while providing a constraining experimental testbed for state-of-the-art modelling.

Abstract:Plasmonic and photonic elements often have complementary optical properties, motivating the development of ‘optoplasmonic’ hybrid systems in which the photonic and plasmonic elements can synergistically interact. The overall goal in the design of optoplasmonic structures is to overcome the limitations of the individual building blocks or to generate entirely new properties that reach beyond what is possible with conventional photonic or plasmonic structures. After providing a brief introduction into the relevant optical properties of plasmonic and photonic building blocks, this manuscript reviews optoplasmonic architectures that contain plasmonic nanoantennas embedded in a defined photonic environment generated by discrete dielectric nanoparticles (NPs), microcavities, waveguides, or photonic crystals, as well as all-metal NP or metal/dielectric NP hybrid arrays in which diffracted modes interact with the plasmons of metal NPs. The fundamental working principles of these optoplasmonic systems are analyzed and selected applications and fabrication strategies are discussed.

Abstract:Ultrafast processes that occur upon the absorption of photons by a material frequently play important roles in the efficiency of a desired energy conversion or photocatalytic outcome. For example, energetic carriers produced upon photoexcitation of plasmonic systems can quickly dissipate energy through electron scattering processes on femtosecond timescales, followed by electron-phonon coupling on picosecond timescales. Once the carriers are thermalized, less energy is available to drive a charge separation or photocatalytic process. At the same time, there are number of handles with which to improve the efficiency of photoinduced processes, and ultrafast spectroscopy can be used to characterize that improvement. Nanostructuring, for example, can produce higher efficiency of photocatalytic processes as free charges are more likely to reach a surface following photoexcitation, and local anisotropies at the surface can drive electromagnetic field enhancements and the greater production of “hot” electrons. Hybridization of differing materials is also a powerful handle with which to manipulate or improve charge separation and photocatalytic outcomes. New materials can lead to greater robustness under illumination, as well as lead to changes in dissipation processes. In this talk, I describe recent efforts to characterize novel nanostructures of interest for plasmonics and energy conversion via ultrafast spectroscopy, as well as explore the ultrafast dissipation processes in refractory plasmonic nanomaterials. Particular attention is paid to dissipation of energy to the local environment of the nanoparticles as well as to ultrafast electron scattering processes. Hybrid nanostructures are also explored. Abstract:We have proposed the use of surface plasmon resonances at the interface of hybrid magneto-photonic heterostructures [ Opt. Mat. Express , 7 , 4316 ( 2017 ) 10.1364/OME.7.004316 ] for all-optical control of the macroscopic spin orientation in nanostructures in fs time scales. This requires strong spin-photon coupling for the resonant enhancement of opto-magnetic fields, generated through the inverse Faraday effect, in magnetic nanostructures with perpendicular anisotropy. Here we report on the development of nm thick interlayers to control the growth orientation of hcp-Co alloys grown on refractory plasmonic materials to align the magnetic axis out-of-plane, thereby meeting key requirements for the realization of ultrafast magneto-photonic devices.

Abstract:Compact metallo-dielectric hybrid clusters with subwavelength dimensions are fabricated by template guided self-assembly. Elastic and inelastic scattering spectroscopy and electromagnetic simulations reveal that hybrid clusters comprising TiO(2) nanoparticles on top of a cluster of strongly coupled gold nanoparticles harness synergistic electromagnetic interactions between the building blocks. This results in a boost of the peak electric field intensity and a redistribution of the field in the ambient medium. The complex phase landscape in the clusters features optical vortices that enhance the magnetic field.

Abstract:Energy transfer between photons and molecules and between neighboring molecules is ubiquitous in living nature, most prominently in photosynthesis. While energy transfer is efficiently utilized by living systems, its adoption to connect individual components in man-made plasmonic nanocircuits has been challenged by low transfer efficiencies which motivate the development of entirely new concepts for energy transfer. We introduce herein optoplasmonic superlenses that combine the capability of optical microcavities to insulate molecule-photon systems from decohering environmental effects with the superior light nanoconcentration properties of nanoantennas. The proposed structures provide significant enhancement of the emitter radiative rate and efficient long-range transfer of emitted photons followed by subsequent re-focusing into nanoscale volumes accessible to near- and far-field detection. Optoplasmonic superlenses are versatile building blocks for optoplasmonic nanocircuits and can be used to construct "dark" single molecule sensors, resonant amplifiers, nanoconcentrators, frequency multiplexers, demultiplexers, energy converters and dynamical switches.

Abstract:In this paper we summarize our recent advances in the design and fabrication of optoplasmonic molecules and superlenses. These structures contain specific numbers of optical microcavity resonators and noble metal nanoparticles in well defined geometries enabling electromagnetic interactions between the photonic and plasmonic components. These optoplasmonic structures were fabricated using a novel template assisted fabrication approach that facilitates a convenient positioning of noble metal nanoparticles into the equatorial plane of whispering gallery mode resonators. The near-and far-field properties of the fabricated structures were characterized using scattering spectroscopy and generalized multiple particle Mie theory (GMT) simulations.

Abstract:Advances in the field of plasmonics, i.e., nano-photonics exploiting the optical properties of metal nanostructures, paved the way for the development of ultrasensitive devices, including biological and various other sensors whose operation is based on the nanoscale localization of the electromagnetic field. However, the high dissipation loss of metal nanostructures limits their use in many current applications, including metasurfaces, metamaterials, and nanowaveguides, thus requiring the development of new devices that combine metal nanostructures with highly refractive dielectric nanoparticles. The resulting metal–dielectric (hybrid) nanostructures have demonstrated many interesting properties from the practical application standpoint (moderate dissipation loss, resonant magnetooptical response, strong nonlinear optical properties, etc.), thus placing this field at the vanguard of the modern science of light. We review the current state of theoretical and experimental research into hybrid metal–dielectric nanoantennas and their derivative nanostructures capable of selectively scattering light waves, directionally amplifying and transmitting optical signals, controlling the propagation of such signals, and generating optical harmonics.

Abstract:A polaritonic metasurface is presented herein. It is composed of interlocked arrays of two organic materials on a silver surface. Both material excitations are strongly coupled through the plasmon despite their spatial separation. The hybridization between both dyes leads to energy transfer over micrometric distances. The strong light−matter coupling, occurring when the light−matter interaction prevails on the damping, has found applications beyond the domain of optics in chemistry or transport. These advances make the development of various structures in strong coupling crucial. In this paper, a new way to hybridize two materials and transfer energy through a surface plasmon over micrometric distances is proposed. For this purpose, two patterned interlocked dye arrays, one donor and one acceptor, are deposited on a silver surface by successive micro‐contact printing, leading to a pattern of 5 microns period. The dispersion relation of the structure is measured with reflectometry experiments, showing the hybridization with the plasmon, and the formation of states that mix both excitons and the plasmon with similar weights. The mixing in these polaritonic metasurfaces enables an energy transfer mechanism in the strong coupling, which is observed with luminescence experiments. As the donor and acceptor are spatially separated by a distance larger than the diffraction limit the excitation transfer is directly measured and evaluated by comparison with dye arrays without silver.

Abstract:Hybrid superstructures allow a convenient route to the development of materials with multiple functionalities (e.g., sensor, marker, conductor) out of monofunctional (e.g., excitonic, plasmonic) building blocks. This work describes a general synthetic route to the preparation of metal|dielectric|quantum dot hybrid superstructures that have excitonic and plasmonic resonances independently tunable from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared spectral region. We demonstrate that structural tuning can be used to control intercomponent coupling leading to the emergence of unique optical properties. We illustrate this capability by demonstrating single- and multicolor emission from coupled systems, and a significant enhancement of two-photon absorption cross sections of quantum dots. Such properties in a robust yet dispersible particle can be useful in a number of applications including bioimaging and microscopy, and in optoelectronic devices, as well as serve as a platform for fundamental studies of metal-semiconductor interactions.
Optoplasmonic Networks with Morphology-Dependent Near- and Far-Field Responses

Abstract:Optoplasmonic networks consisting of dielectric microsphere resonators and plasmonic nanoantennas in a morphologically well-defined on-chip platform support unique electromagnetic signatures that are hybrids of photonic whispering gallery modes and localized surface plasmon resonances. Here we explore the dependence of their near- and far-field responses on the key structural parameters, including the size of the gold nanoparticles forming the plasmonic elements, the separation between the microspheres, and the geometry of the chain. The high degree of structural flexibility, which is experimentally accessible through template guided self-assembly approaches, makes these optoplasmonic structures a unique electromagnetic material for tuning spectral shapes and intensities.

Abstract:Non-centrosymmetric nanostructures consisting of multiple functional subunits represents an emerging class of hybrid nanostructures that can possess dramatic difference in property and functionality from concentric core–shell configuration. Here we develop a general synthetic method to achieve hierarchical control of high-order non-centrosymmetric hybrid nanostructures. The key is to employ a common intermedium for sequential conversion to all distinct predesigned subunits under similar growth condition, thus facilitating manifold control of a hybrid nanostructure. This advancement leads to an optimally designed plasmon-mediated photocatalytic nanostructure with 14.8-fold enhancement of photocatalytic efficiency as compared with conventional photocatalysts. Mechanistic study involving theoretical modelling and ultrafast time-resolved optical measurement uncovers a hot plasmonic electron-driven photocatalysis mechanism with an identified electron transfer pathway. This study may represent an important step towards high-level control of artificial nanostructures with new horizons for fundamental and technological applications.

Abstract:Metallic and dielectric nanoparticles (NPs) have synergistic electromagnetic properties but their positioning into morphologically defined hybrid arrays with novel optical properties still poses significant challenges. A template-guided self-assembly strategy is introduced for the positioning of metallic and dielectric NPs at pre-defined lattice sites. The chemical assembly approach facilitates the fabrication of clusters of metallic NPs with interparticle separations of only a few nanometers in a landscape of dielectric NPs positioned hundreds of nanometers apart. This approach is used to generate two-dimensional interdigitated arrays of 250 nm diameter TiO2 NPs and clusters of electromagnetically strongly coupled 60 nm Au NPs. The morphology-dependent near- and far-field responses of the resulting multiscale optoplasmonic arrays are analyzed in detail. Elastic and inelastic scattering spectroscopy in combination with electromagnetic simulations reveal that optoplasmonic arrays sustain delocalized photonic-plasmonic modes that achieve a cascaded E-field enhancement in the gap junctions of the Au NP clusters and simultaneously increase the E-field intensity throughout the entire array.
