Abstract:We report a novel approach to Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) by using a digital micromirror device (DMD) and a coherent laser source (532 nm) for generating spatially modulated sample illumination. Previously demonstrated FPM systems are all based on partially-coherent illumination, which offers limited throughput due to insufficient brightness. Our FPM employs a high power coherent laser source to enable shot-noise limited high-speed imaging. For the first time, a digital micromirror device (DMD), imaged onto the back focal plane of the illumination objective, is used to generate spatially modulated sample illumination field for ptychography. By coding the on/off states of the micromirrors, the illumination plane wave angle can be varied at speeds more than 4 kHz. A set of intensity images, resulting from different oblique illuminations, are used to numerically reconstruct one high-resolution image without obvious laser speckle. Experiments were conducted using a USAF resolution target and a fiber sample, demonstrating high-resolution imaging capability of our system. We envision that our approach, if combined with a coded-aperture compressive-sensing algorithm, will further improve the imaging speed in DMD-based FPM systems. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In the structured illumination microscopy (SIM) family, interferometric implementations using traditional physical gratings or advanced liquid crystal on silicon spatial light modulators are popular but have the disadvantages of expensive and limited speed. A promising alternative of a digital micromirror device (DMD) has improved the situation for its lower cost and higher speed, furthermore, it has contributed to the proposal of a simple and compact projection DMD-SIM. However, the projection DMD-SIM method is accused of erroneously measuring the resolution because of the scattering characteristic of gold beads, despite the inferior experimental resolution that is because of the low fringe contrast and the resulting low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As an improvement, we use a high-brightness laser for illumination to achieve higher SNR, and the accompanying problems of speckle and inhomogeneity originating from the laser’s high coherence are solved by a high-frequency phase-randomization deformable mirror in conjunction with a square-core multimode fiber, which does not limit the image acquisition speed and with fewer energy losses compared to the existing methods. Also, in terms of the problem of low SNR, we apply a parallel-iteration Richardson–Lucy deconvolution algorithm for SIM reconstruction to further improve the imaging performance based on ensuring the resolution. Based on these advances, we image fluorescent nanoparticles and other non-biological and biological fluorescent samples, and the experimental results demonstrate the improved imaging performance of our modified system.

Abstract:Spatial light modulating based on a single-chip digital micromirror device(DMD) projection system containing a micromirror array was improved to accurately control DMD in the space and time.The computer can control the DMD projection system and the projection system output digital video signal can indirectly control the micromirror array of DMD through improving the software and hardware of the DMD projection system.The system combined the static image in the time,and a compatible and program controllable reflex spatial light modulator system containing static controlling and dynamic controlling was realized.Results show that the modulator can control single pixel of DMD;the highest frequency of modulation is 60 Hz;changing the frequency and duty cycle can realize the spatial light modulator step control.
Quantitative Phase Imaging Based on Wavefront Correction of a Digital Micromirror Device

Abstract:The strong need in materials and biological science has prompted the development of high-speed quantitative phase imaging. However, for phase retrieval applying digital micromirror devices (DMDs), the accuracy of the retrieved phase will be disturbed by the DMD-induced aberrations. Here, we propose a phase retrieval method based on measuring and correcting errors caused by phase non-uniformity of the device. Using only four binary amplitude masks and corresponding diffraction intensities, the proposed method achieves rapid convergence and high-quality reconstruction. The experiments prove the practical feasibility for general samples and the effective improvement of the retrieved phase accuracy.

Abstract:We report a novel approach to diffraction phase microscopy (DPM) with automatic pinhole alignment. The pinhole, which serves as a spatial low-pass filter to generate a uniform reference beam, is made out of a liquid crystal display (LCD) device that allows for electrical control. We have made DPM more accessible to users, while maintaining high phase measurement sensitivity and accuracy, through exploring low cost optical components and replacing the tedious pinhole alignment process with an automatic pinhole optical alignment procedure. Due to its flexibility in modifying the size and shape, this LCD device serves as a universal filter, requiring no future replacement. Moreover, a graphic user interface for real-time phase imaging has been also developed by using a USB CMOS camera. Experimental results of height maps of beads sample and live red blood cells (RBCs) dynamics are also presented, making this system ready for broad adaption to biological imaging and material metrology.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated Bessel-like beams utilizing digital micromirror device (DMD). DMD with images imitating the equivalent axicon can shape the collimated Gaussian beam into Bessel beam. We reconstructed the 3D spatial field of the generated beam through a stack of measured cross-sectional images. The output beams have the profile of Bessel function after intensity modulation, and the beams extend at least 50 mm while the lateral dimension of the spot remains nearly invariant. Furthermore, the self-healing property has also been investigated, and all the experimental results agree well with simulated results numerically calculated through beam propagation method. Our observations demonstrate that the DMD offers a simple and efficient method to generate Bessel beams with distinct nondiffracting and self-reconstruction behaviors. The generated Bessel beams will potentially expand the applications to the optical manipulation and high-resolution fluorescence imaging owing to the unique nondiffracting property. Abstract:Digital micro-mirror devices (DMDs) as spatial light modulators, have the advantages of high modulation speed and accuracy and can perform amplitude or phase modulation for illumination light, which are widely used in phase imaging systems. In this paper, a DMD is used for the random coding modulation of illumination light amplitude. We simulate the influences of the smallest modulation unit and switch ratio on phase imaging when random coding patterns are loaded on the DMD. Then we use a difference mapping iterative algorithm for light field reconstruction. Furthermore, it is experimentally verified that based on the parameters obtained via numerical simulation, we can retrieve amplitude and phase with a higher iteration speed and a fewer measurement times. In addition, for an object with the field of view of 4.3 mm X 4.3 mm, the reconstruction resolution reaches 6.9 mu m.

Abstract:We report an approach to enhance the resolution of the microscopy imaging by using the fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) method with a laser source and Spatial Light Modulator (SLM) to generate modulated sample illumination. The performance of the existed FPM system is limited by low illumination efficiency of the LED array. In our prototype setup, digital micromirror device (DMD) is introduced to replace the LED array as a reflective spatial light modulator and is placed at the front focal plane of the 4F system. A ring pattern sample illumination is generated by coding the micromirrors on the DMD, and converted to multi-angular illumination through the relay illumination system. A series of intensity sample images can be obtained by changing the size of the ring pattern and then used to reconstruct high resolution image through the ring pattern phase retrieval algorithm. Finally, our method is verified by an experiment using a resolution chart. The results also show that our method have higher reconstruction resolution and faster imaging speed.
Shaping Non-Diffracting Beams with a Digital Micromirror Device

Abstract:The micromechanical digital micromirror device (DMD) performs as a spatial light modulator to shape the light wavefront. Different from the liquid crystal devices, which use the birefringence to modulate the light wave, the DMD regulates the wavefront through an amplitude modulation with the digitally controlled mirrors switched on and off. The advantages of such device are the fast speed, polarization insensitivity, and the broadband modulation ability. The fast switching ability for the DMD not only enables the shaping of static light mode, but also could dynamically compensate for the wavefront distortion due to scattering medium. We have employed such device to create the higher order modes, including the Laguerre-Gaussian, Hermite-Gaussian, as well as Mathieu modes. There exists another kind of beam with shape-preservation against propagation, and self-healing against obstacles. Representative modes are the Bessel modes, Airy modes, and the Pearcey modes. Since the DMD modulates the light intensity, a series of algorithms are developed to calculate proper amplitude hologram for shaping the light. The quasi-continuous gray scale images could imitate the continuous amplitude hologram, while the binary amplitude modulation is another means to create the modulation pattern for a steady light field. We demonstrate the generation of the non-diffracting beams with the binary amplitude modulation via the DMD, and successfully created the non-diffracting Bessel beam, Airy beam, and the Pearcey beam. We have characterized the non-diffracting modes through propagation measurements as well as the self-healing measurements.

Abstract:We propose a novel common-path quantitative phase imaging (QPI) method based on a digital micromirror device (DMD). The DMD is placed in a plane conjugate to the objective back-aperture plane for the purpose of generating two plane waves that illuminate the sample. A pinhole is used in the detection arm to filter one of the beams after sample to create a reference beam. Additionally, a transmission-type liquid crystal device, placed at the objective back-aperture plane, eliminates the specular reflection noise arising from all the “off” state DMD micromirrors, which is common in all DMD-based illuminations. We have demonstrated high sensitivity QPI, which has a measured spatial and temporal noise of 4.92 nm and 2.16 nm, respectively. Experiments with calibrated polystyrene beads illustrate the desired phase measurement accuracy. In addition, we have measured the dynamic height maps of red blood cell membrane fluctuations, showing the efficacy of the proposed system for live cell imaging. Most importantly, the DMD grants the system convenience in varying the interference fringe period on the camera to easily satisfy the pixel sampling conditions. This feature also alleviates the pinhole alignment complexity. We envision that the proposed DMD-based common-path QPI system will allow for system miniaturization and automation for a broader adaption.
Characterization of White-Light Non-Diffracting Beams Generated Using a Deformable Mirror.

Abstract:White-light non-diffraction beams such as Airy beam and Bessel beam have potential applications in multispectral imaging and micromanipulation. Generation of white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam with high quality and high efficiency still remains challenging for conventional diffractive or refractive optics which suffers from significant chromatic dispersion. In this paper, both high-quality white-light Airy beam and Bessel beam are generated using a deformable mirror by modulating the incident LED beam with tunable cubic and conical wavefronts. The main lobe of the generated white-light non-diffraction beams does not suffer from chromatic dispersion along the propagation. The results also show that the generation of the white-light Bessel beam has higher requirements for spatial coherence than white-light Airy beams. Our work expands the understanding of the white-light non-diffraction beams and paves the way for the applications.
DMD-based Pure-Phase Superpixel Method for Digital Holography

Abstract:In this work, we implement a pure-phase superpixel (PPSP) method with a digital micromirror device (DMD). Here the DMD acts in an unconventional mode, i.e. as a phase-only modulator with hundreds of phase levels. An iterative Fourier transform algorithm is adapted to the DMD with high quality in a 2f-configuration without filters. When using 1600 × 1600 DMD pixels, the simulations show that the PPSP method in combination with the mixed-region amplitude freedom algorithm reduces the root-mean-square error by at least 33.5% compared with the conventional amplitude and phase modulation methods, and provides higher efficiency by 7.3%.

Abstract:A digital micromirror device (DMD) modulates laser intensity through computer control of the device. We experimentally investigate the performance of the modulation property of a DMD and optimize the modulation procedure through image correction. Furthermore, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams with different topological charges are generated by projecting a series of forklike gratings onto the DMD. We measure the field distribution with and without correction, the energy of LG beams with different topological charges, and the polarization property in sequence. Experimental results demonstrate that it is possible to generate LG beams with a DMD that allows the use of a high-intensity laser with proper correction to the input images, and that the polarization state of the LG beam differs from that of the input beam.
Shaping Diffraction-Free Lommel Beams with Digital Binary Amplitude Masks.

Abstract:Here, we report on experimental observations of various Lommel modes that possess distinct diffraction-free behaviors. The binary amplitude masks are designed to accurately encode the complex field information with the superpixel method. Then, the generation of the desired beams is demonstrated with these binary patterns projected onto the digital micromirrors device (DMD). Remarkably, we find that the field distribution and orbital angular momentum can be continuously engineered by tuning the beam parameters. Furthermore, the shape-invariant feature of such beams is verified by their far-field ring-like structures. Our observations are in good accordance with the theoretical predictions, and our methods may find potential applications in optical guiding and imaging. Moreover, apart from the DMD, the binary amplitude hologram can also be presented with well-fabricated elements, and thus, our method will also enable new applications for surface plasmon polaritons as well as electron beams.

Abstract:We have set up a novel system for shaping the Gaussian laser beams into super-Gaussian beams. The digital micro-mirror device (DMD) is able to modulate the laser light spatially through binary-amplitude modulation mechanism. With DMD, the irradiance of the laser beam can be redistributed flexibly and various beams with different intensity distribution can be produced. A super-Gaussian beam has been successfully shaped from the Gaussian beam with the use of DMD. This technique will be widely applied in lithography, quantum emulation and holographic optical tweezers which require precise control of beam profile.

Abstract:We propose a novel technique to directly transform a linearly polarized Gaussian beam into vector-vortex beams with various spatial patterns. Full high-quality control of amplitude and phase is implemented via a Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) binary holography for generating Laguerre-Gaussian, Bessel-Gaussian, and helical Mathieu–Gaussian modes, while a radial polarization converter (S-waveplate) is employed to effectively convert the optical vortices into cylindrically polarized vortex beams. Additionally, the generated vector-vortex beams maintain their polarization symmetry after arbitrary polarization manipulation. Due to the high frame rates of DMD, rapid switching among a series of vector modes carrying different orbital angular momenta paves the way for optical microscopy, trapping, and communication.
Rapid Generation of Perfect Vortex Beam Without Side Lobes

Abstract:We have proposed an approach for rapid generation of perfect vortex beam without side lobes through a digital micromirror device (DMD). Employing this method, the amplitude and phase of far field can be controlled indirectly by changing the rotation state of each unit on the DMD. The perfect vortex beams of equal rings diameter independent of their topological charges are generated commendably and the side lobes are avoided. Moreover, we have demonstrated rapid switching among the generated orbital angular momentum modes at the speed of 10 kHz, which is much faster than that of the usual method realized by spatial light modulators (SLMs). The proposed method is very beneficial for the optical communication and trapping or manipulating the small particle based on orbital angular momentum modes.

Abstract:Generating high-frequency sinusoidal intensity patterns with different orientations, periods, and phases is crucial in many optical measurement systems. As the required measurement resolution of an optical metrology system is increased, interference-based structured light generation with a coherent light source is preferred over a projection-based method with an incoherent light source. We propose a powerful high-frequency intensity pattern generation scheme using the anti-blaze condition (ABC) of a digital micromirror device (DMD). Unlike conventional methods using the blaze condition of a DMD, our proposed method is intrinsically free from a DC component, which can circumvent the requirements of matched spatial filters and sophisticated alignments. We have experimentally verified the feasibility of our proposed method by proposing a series of DMD patterns that can generate various high-frequency two-beam interference patterns.

Abstract:Ince-Gaussian (IG) beam with elliptical profile, as a connection between Hermite-Gaussian (HG) and Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams, has showed unique advantages in some applications such as quantum entanglement and optical micromanipulation. However, its dynamic generation with high switching frequency is still challenging. Here, we experimentally reported the quick generation of Ince-Gaussian beam by using a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), which has the highest switching frequency of 5.2 kHz in principle. The configurable properties of DMD allow us to observe the quasi-smooth variation from LG (with ellipticity ε=0) to IG and HG (ε=∞) beam. This approach might pave a path to high-speed quantum communication in terms of IG beam. Additionally, the characterized axial plane intensity distribution exhibits a 3D mould potentially being employed for optical micromanipulation.

Abstract:A digital micromirror device (DMD) has a wide range of applications in holographic display, light field manipulation, etc., due to its high-speed refresh rates. In order to precisely control the wavefront, the influence of the micromirror array structure of the DMD requires careful analysis. Based on an accurate three-dimensional phase model of DMD, we analyzed the diffraction characteristics of DMD. The model was established by accurately describing the phase distribution along each micromirror surface direction, and the distance between the point on the micromirror and the diffraction plane. The results showed that the orders of the DMD are the results of two groups of micromirrors interfering with each other, and a slight offset occurs when the incidence angle is twice the micromirror tilt angle, which can be removed by adjusting the incidence angle. The phase distribution results showed the main order of the DMD with all micromirrors in the on state can be approximated as a plane wave, which means that the hologram can be normally loaded on the DMD without worrying about phase disturbance from the micromirror array structure. This provides great convenience for computer holography based on DMD. Numerical simulations and experiments demonstrated the effectiveness of the work.
