Abstract:The original image bit width of a cooled thermal imaging camera is 14Bit. 14Bit has a wider grayscale range, higher accuracy, and more image details compared to 8Bit, but the maximum grayscale range that can be displayed by a general display is 8Bit, so the original image data of 14Bit needs to be compressed effectively. In this paper, we propose an image compression and display algorithm based on guided image filtering (GIF). First, the image is layered using guided image filtering, i.e., the base layer and the detail layer. Then the adaptive platform histogram equalization (APHE) process is applied to the base layer to improve the contrast of the image; the adaptive detail enhancement is applied to the detail layer to enhance the details while reducing the noise. Finally, the images processed separately after layering are linearly fused to achieve dynamic compression and detail enhancement of high Bit images. Through simulation and comparison experiments with commonly used algorithms, as well as comprehensive comparison of visual effects and quantitative evaluation parameters, the proposed algorithm in this paper achieves significant improvements in both performance and effectiveness.
Enhancement Algorithm for Infrared Images Based on Kalman Filter

Abstract:To remove the non-uniformity noise in the infrared image,the denoise and enhancement algorithm based on Kalman filter is proposed.In the framework of Bayesian-MAP inference,the feasibility of Kalman filter was discussed.Due to the inner temperature increment and the circuit parameters' minor changes of the imaging system,each pixel's fixed pattern noise(FPN) varies slowly and non-uniformly between frames.Based on this view,the dark frame was modeled.The level of the FPN was estimated by Kalman filter acted on sequential dark frames.The noise influence factor(NIF) was introduced to evaluate the influence of the FPN to the pixel's output signal.And then,the reasonable weight of each pixel's FPN was determined adaptively by means of NIF.The non-uniformity of the infrared image can be corrected after weighted subtraction FPN from the real noisy image data on pixels one by one.The algorithm was applied in real infrared images and gray mean grads(GMG) was used to evaluate its performance.In target neighborhood,GMG is reduced by 5.1%.It means that the image is smoothed and the edges are preserved well.At the same time,GMG is reduced by 85.5% in smooth neighborhood.The experiments show that algorithm produces an obvious denoise and enhancive effect in both target and smooth regions.
Microscopic image detail enhancement based on local window and extremum

Abstract:In the optical microscopic imaging,optical lens and electronic imaging have great influence on the microscopic image quality,related to the degradation of image detail.Combining with the demand of digital microscopic imaging,we proposed a post-processing method for detail enhancement.The degradation of digital microscopic imaging system was analyzed,especially the blurring effect caused by optical degradation.On one hand,we used variable sizes of local windows to extract details.On the other hand,the maximum and minimum within local window were analyzed,and the detailed image was obtained.Finally,the details were enhanced.The experimental results demonstrated that this method was suitable for digital microscopic imaging system,and the method ran fast and gave good enhancement results.By using visual definition,gray mean gradient and Laplacian sum as the metrics in the proposed method the results were improved by 20.9%,71.2% and 81.8%,respectively.
Multi Scale Detail-Preserving Denoising Method Of Infrared Image Via Relative Total Variation

Abstract:How to remove the noise in infrared image effectively with detail preserving is a significant but difficult problem in infrared image processing. Various methods have been proposed to obtain good results. However, these algorithms usually cannot distinguish noise and detail efficiently, which leads to smoothing some details in infrared images. Recently a novel local measure called relative total variation (RTV) is proposed to accomplish effective texture removal. RTV measure is combined with a general windowed total variation measure and a novel inherent variation measure to smooth the image texture effectively while preserving the main structure. In this paper, using detail preserving smoothing method via RTV, a multi scale denoising algorithm for infrared image is proposed. Firstly, the infrared image is decomposed into several scales by non-subsampled Contourlet transform (NSCT). NSCT decomposition does not do any down sampling or up sampling, thus the results are not band limited. Secondly, the algorithm applies RTV based detail preserving denoising method for each decomposed layers. Different smoothing parameters are respectively used to adjust the denoising levels in different scales. Finally, various synthetic weights are utilized to different layers to reconstruct the final infrared denosing results. Compared with other infrared denoising approaches, the quantitative comparisons demonstrate that the proposed method could well suppress the noise of infrared image while preserving the edge details effectively. Both visual quality and objective measure results show that this method is efficient and has a good application in infrared image denoising.

Abstract:There always exist contrast reduction and details degradation when the infrared imaging system works on water surface because of fog and water mist. An image enhancement method is proposed based on radiative transfer theory. Firstly, the infrared enhancement model is built according to radiative transfer theory, with which we construct an optimization frame. Secondly, edge matrix is designed for weight analysis, which is particularly important for next estimation of fine transmissivity and optical path radiation. Finally, enhancement is achieved with edge matrix. The main contribution and novelty includes the derivation of enhancement based on radiative transfer theory, design of edge matrix, and estimation of fine transmissivity and optical path radiation. The experimental comparisons show the proposed method can generate results with a good visual effect, which is proved by both subjective and objective assessment. The experiments also indicate that the proposed algorithm runs fast to apply in real system.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of hardware, infrared (IR) images have low-resolution (LR) and poor visual quality. Image super-resolution (SR) is a good solution to this problem. In this paper, we present a new convolution network (CNN) to improve the spatial resolution of infrared (IR) images. Our network is able to restore fine details by decomposing the input image into low-frequency and high-frequency domains. In low-frequency domains, we reconstruct image structure by deep networks. In high frequency domains, we reconstruct IR image details. Furthermore, we proposed another network to remove artifacts. Additionally, we propose a new loss function using visible (VIS) images to enhance the details of IR images. In training phase, we use VIS images to guide IR image restoration and in testing phase we get SR IR images with LR IR images input only. We optimize our deep network with a targeted function which penalizes images at different semantic levels using the corresponding terms. Besides, we build a dataset where paired LR-VIS images on the same scene are captured by a camera with both infrared and visible light sensors which both sensors have the same optical axis. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance and visual improvements against the state-of-the-arts.

Abstract:We propose a multi-scale saliency extraction based fast infrared image enhancement approach. A local frequency-tuned based saliency extraction technique is designed for highlighting the salient regions, firstly. Then, multi-scale saliency extraction is demonstrated, introducing multi-scale local windows with different sizes to extract regions of interest at different scales. Finally, the original image is enhanced with combining multi-scale salient image regions into one image. The experimental results prove the proposed approach is robust and efficient for infrared image enhancement.

Abstract:Infrared image enhancement technology plays a crucial role in improving image quality, addressing issues like low contrast, lack of sharpness, and poor visual effects within the original images. However, existing decomposition-based algorithms struggle with balancing detail enhancement, noise suppression, and utilizing global and local information effectively. This paper proposes an innovative method for enhancing details in infrared images using adaptive guided filtering and global–local mapping. Initially, the original image is decomposed into its base layer and detail layer through the adaptive guided filter and difference of the Gaussian filter. Subsequently, the detail layer undergoes enhancement using a detail gain factor. Finally, the base layer and enhanced detail layer are merged and remapped to a lower gray level. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in global and local contrast, as well as sharpness, with an average gradient enhancement of nearly 3% across various scenes.

Abstract:Since the low contrast and lack of details in infrared imagery, a polarization imaging based enhancement method was proposed. Fusing the infrared polarization image and intensity image, this infrared image enhancement approach made the target areas prominent. Firstly, the polarization imaging theory was analyzed, and then polarization images were obtained using the polarization imaging technology. Secondly, the information of polarization images could be well acquired with the help of Shearlets based multi-scale image decomposition. Finally, the enhanced fused result was got with region feature matching. To test the effectiveness of this method, experimental device was built to get real images. Compared with original image, both the subjective and objective evaluation results indicate that the enhanced images have much more image details and polarization information, which is useful for target detection and recognition.

Abstract:The detail enhancement and dynamic range compression of infrared (IR) images is an important issue and a necessary practical application in the domain of IR image processing. This paper provides a novel approach to displaying high dynamic range infrared images on common display equipment with appropriate contrast and clear detail information. The steps are chiefly as follows. First, in order to protect the weak global details in different regions of the image, we adjust the original normalized image into multiple brightness levels by adaptive Gamma transformation. Second, each brightness image is decomposed into a base layer and several detail layers by the multiscale guided filter. Details in each image are enhanced separately. Third, to obtain the image with global details of the input image, enhanced images in each brightness are fused together. Last, we filter out the outliers and adjust the dynamic range before outputting the image. Compared with other conventional or cutting-edge methods, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective and robust in dynamic range compression and detail information enhancement of IR image.

Abstract:Non-uniformity commonly exists in the infrared focal plane, which behaves as the fixed pattern noise (FPN) and seriously affects the image quality of the infrared imaging system. This paper proposed a novel scene-based non-uniformity correction method with a new edge-preserve filter and adaptive learning rate. First, using co-occurrence filter as the desired image estimation, the proposed method removed the FPN while preserving the image details. Then, an adaptive learning rate connected with both temporal motion and spatial correlation factor is utilized to decrease the effect of ghosting artifacts. In this way, the proposed method overcomes the shortcomings of the traditional scene-based non-uniformity. Several real infrared image sequences collected in different conditions are used to verify the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has a much better visual effect, making a great balance between the non-uniformity correction and details preservation. Compared with other good NUC methods, this method also has better performance in the aspects of applicability and robustness, which has great application value.

Abstract:In the field of long-wave infrared multispectral imaging, traditional snapshot techniques often deploy broadband filters in front of the sensor to encode spectral information about the scene. However, this approach causes a significant loss of precious optical energy, especially for the limited radiation energy of the long-wave infrared region. To address this issue, we first propose an imaging strategy that replaces conventional filters with specially designed diffractive elements, which are optimized by a gradient descent algorithm. The diffractive elements enable effective steering of diverse wavelengths to their designated pixels, significantly minimizing the reflection losses throughout light transmission and thereby augmenting the system's optical energy efficiency. Secondly, we use the MST neural network to reconstruct the spectral information and realize the snapshot computational multispectral imaging. In the experiments, we concentrate the wavelength band within 8-12 mu m, simulating and optimizing the design of the diffractive elements. We also discuss how this innovative design can adapt to the field change of image plane that may be encountered in the actual imaging system. Emulation experiments show that our proposed method ensures excellent spectral separation and high imaging quality under different field conditions. This study provides new ideas and practical guidance for the lightweight and efficient development of long-wave infrared multispectral imaging technology.

Abstract:Limited by the mechanism of infrared imaging and the detector,infrared images have the disadvantages of low con-trast and blurry edge.These shortcomings lead infrared image unsuitable to be observed by both human and computer.This arti-cle proposed a new method that combined the layering idea with the human visual properties to enhance the infrared image.The proposed method relied on bilateral filtering to separate a base component,which contained the large amplitude signal and must be compressed,from a detail component,which must be expanded because it contained the small signal variations related to fine texture.The base component was mapped into the proper range which was 8 bit using the human visual properties,and the de-tail component was applied the method of adaptive gain control.Finally,it recombined and quantized the two parts to 8 bit do-main.Experimental results show that this algorithm exceeds most current image enhancement methods in solving the problems of low contrast and blurry detail.
Gaussian mixture model-based gradient field reconstruction for infrared image detail enhancement and denoising

Abstract:Infrared images are characterized by low signal-to-noise ratio and low contrast. Therefore, the edge details are easily immerged in the background and noise, making it much difficult to achieve infrared image edge detail enhancement and denoising. This article proposes a novel method of Gaussian mixture model-based gradient field reconstruction, which enhances image edge details while suppressing noise. First, by analyzing the gradient histogram of noisy infrared image, Gaussian mixture model is adopted to simulate the distribution of the gradient histogram, and divides the image information into three parts corresponding to faint details, noise and the edges of clear targets, respectively. Then, the piecewise function is constructed based on the characteristics of the image to increase gradients of faint details and suppress gradients of noise. Finally, anisotropic diffusion constraint is added while visualizing enhanced image from the transformed gradient field to further suppress noise. The experimental results show that the method possesses unique advantage of effectively enhancing infrared image edge details and suppressing noise as well, compared with the existing methods. In addition, it can be used to effectively enhance other types of images such as the visible and medical images.

Abstract:In uncooled long-wave infrared (LWIR) imaging systems, non-uniformity of the amplifier in readout circuit will generate significant noise in captured infrared images. This type of noise, if not eliminated, may manifest as vertical and horizontal strips in the raw image and human observers are particularly sensitive to these types of image artifacts. In this paper we propose an effective non-uniformity correction (NUC) method to remove strip noise without loss of fine image details. This multi-scale destriping method consists of two consecutive steps. Firstly, wavelet-based image decomposition is applied to separate the original input image into three individual scale levels: large, median and small scales. In each scale level, the extracted vertical image component contains strip noise and vertical-orientated image textures. Secondly, a novel multi-scale 1D guided filter is proposed to further separate strip noise from image textures in each individual scale level. More specifically, in the small scale level, we choose a small filtering window for guided filter to eliminate strip noise. On the contrary, a large filtering window is used to better preserve image details from blurring in large scale level. Our proposed algorithm is systematically evaluated using real-captured infrared images and the quantitative comparison results with the state-of-the-art destriping algorithms demonstrate that our proposed method can better remove the strip noise without blurring image fine details.

Abstract:Hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising is an important pre-processing procedure for subsequent tasks. Learning a direct mapping from the observed noisy HSI to its clean counterpart is challenging, especially in the case of very severe noise. The learning difficulty can be greatly reduced with the iterative refinement, combining the denoising results with the noisy HSI to produce a cleaner HSI for further denoising. To this end, we introduce an iterative refinement denoising network (IRDNet) for HSIs. The network consists of three key components, i.e., a coarse estimation module, a multi-stage refinement module, and a λ(•) module. The coarse estimation module provides the initial estimate for the starting point of further refinement. The lightweight refinement module progressively performs noise reduction on the weighted combination of noisy inputs and denoising results from the previous layer. Instead of fixed weights, the λ(•) module adaptively provides the layer-wise weight for each band for the aforementioned combinations. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets show that our IRDNet favorably outperforms alternative methods.

Abstract:Due to the inherent defects of infrared imaging systems and the influence of the external complex environment, infrared images have low contrast, blurred edge details, low signal-to-noise ratio and poor visual effects compared with visible images, which have a great impact on the subsequent feature extraction, detection and identification and target tracking, and cannot meet the requirements in military, medical and civilian fields. The current technical deficiencies of infrared imaging devices at the hardware level cannot fundamentally solve these problems, so it is especially necessary to enhance infrared images from the perspective of algorithms. We propose an improved fractional differentiation algorithm that enhances the contrast of infrared images and the contrast of the images is controlled by the fractional order. Experiments and analysis show that the proposed method has good feedback for enhancing the contrast of dark images, and it can effectively enhance the edge information and detail information.
Hierarchical Feature Enhancement Algorithm for Multispectral Infrared Images of Dark and Weak Targets

Abstract:A multispectral infrared zoom optical system design and a single-frame hierarchical guided filtering image enhancement algorithm are proposed to address the technical problems of low contrast, blurred edges, and weak signal strength of single-spectrum infrared imaging of faint targets, which are easily drowned out by noise. The multispectral infrared zoom optical system, based on the theory of complex achromatic and mechanical positive group compensation, can simultaneously acquire multispectral image information for faint targets. The single-frame hierarchical guided filtering image enhancement algorithm, which extracts the background features and detailed features of faint targets in a hierarchical manner and then weights fusion, effectively enhances the target and suppresses the interference of complex background and noise. Solving multi-frame processing increases data storage and real-time challenges. The experimental verification of the optical system design and image enhancement algorithm proposed in this paper separately verified that the experimental enhancement was significant, with the combined use improving Mean Square Error (MSE) by 14.32, Signal-Noise Ratio (SNR) by 11.64, Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) by 12.78, and Structural Similarity (SSIM) by 14.0% compared to guided filtering. This research lays the theoretical foundation for the research of infrared detection and tracking technology for clusters of faint targets.

Abstract:Infrared small-target enhancement in complex contexts is one of the key technologies for infrared search and tracking systems. The effect of enhancement directly determines the reliability of the monitoring equipment. To address the problem of the low signal-to-noise ratio of small infrared moving targets in complex backgrounds and the poor effect of traditional enhancement algorithms, an accurate enhancement method for small infrared moving targets based on two-channel information is proposed. For a single frame, a modified curvature filter is used in the A channel to weaken the background while an improved PM model is used to enhance the target, and a modified band-pass filter is used in the B channel for coarse enhancement followed by a local contrast algorithm for fine enhancement, based on which a weighted superposition algorithm is used to extract a single-frame candidate target. The results of the experimental data analysis prove that the method has a good enhancement effect and robustness for small IR motion target enhancement in complex backgrounds, and it outperforms other advanced algorithms by about 43.7% in ROC.
