Abstract:It has been recntly shown that polarization state of propagation beam would suffer from polarization fluctuations due to the detrimental effects of atmospheric turbulence. This paper studies the performance of wireless optical communication (WOC) systems in the presence of polarization effect of atmosphere. We categorize the atmospheric polarization effect into polarization rotation, polarization-dependent power loss, and phase shift effect, with each effect described and modeled with the help of polarization–coherence theory and the extended Huygens–Fresnelprinciple. The channel matrices are derived to measure the cross-polarization interference of the system. Signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate for polarization multiplexing system and polarization modulation system are obtained to assess the viability using the approach of M turbulence model. Monte Carlo simulation results show the performance of polarization based WOC systems to be degraded by atmospheric polarization effect, which could be evaluated precisely using the proposed model with given turbulent strengths.
Polarization Coherent Optical Communications with Adaptive Polarization Control over Atmospheric Turbulence

Abstract:In wireless optical communication systems, the coherent detection scheme suffers severe performance degradation due to the phase fluctuation and polarization offset. To deal with such challenges, we propose a polarization coherent optical communication scheme with adaptive polarization control (PCPC), where the transmitted continuous-wave light is split into two paths-the binary phase shift keying modulated signal light and the reference light-which are orthogonally polarized and combined before being sent to free space. In the receiving site, the interference between the two lights can effectively suppress the atmospheric turbulence-induced phase fluctuation. Furthermore, we propose an adaptive polarization control scheme for eliminating the polarization offset caused by the transceiver misalignment and the atmospheric turbulence. Performance evaluation of the PCPC scheme with analytical expressions and numerical simulations shows that the PCPC scheme can effectively suppress the phase fluctuation without phase-locked loop and phase tracking algorithm; thus, the PCPC scheme outperforms the traditional coherent modulation in the turbulence channel. An elaborate designed indoor experiment was implemented to verify the scheme performance, where the measured residual phase fluctuation and measured residual polarization offset are both very small, and the experimental bit error rate performance can conform closely to the theory.

Abstract:We investigated the performance of wireless optical communication systems with polarization shift keying modulation when the atmospheric turbulence is anisotropic. Based on the unified theory of polarization and coherence, the characteristic of polarization crosstalk on propagation was shown. Moreover, we explored the effects of propagation distances and turbulent parameters on the signal-to-noise ratio loss of communication system. The results illustrated that polarization crosstalk of horizontal direction on the vertical direction is the main factor affecting communication performance. And it is more conducive to transmit information when the turbulence is anisotropic and the difference between two anisotropic factors is small.

Abstract:An optical signal suffers from irradiance and phase fluctuations when propagating through the free space optical (FSO) turbulence channel, thus resulting in the degradation of the bit error rate (BER) performance. The BER performance can be improved by adopting the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme. In this paper, we propose a coherent binary polarization shift keying (BPOLSK) modulation scheme with MIMO employing maximum ratio combining and equal gain combining diversity techniques to mitigate the turbulence effect. The gamma-gamma statistical channel model is adopted for all the turbulence regimes. The BER performance for the proposed BPOLSK-MIMO FSO link is compared with the single-input single-output and ON-OFF-keying systems by means of computer simulation. The optical power gain is investigated and demonstrated under different turbulence regimes for a number of transmitters/receivers.

Abstract:In wireless optical communications (WOC), polarization multiplexing systems and coherent polarization systems have excellent performance and wide applications, while its state of polarization affected by atmospheric turbulence is not clearly understood. This paper focuses on the polarization fluctuations caused by atmospheric turbulence in a WOC link. Firstly, the relationship between the polarization fluctuations and the index of refraction structure parameter is introduced and the distribution of received polarization angle is obtained through theoretical derivations. Then, turbulent conditions are adjusted and measured elaborately in a wide range of scintillation indexes (SI). Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally verify the performance of multiple polarization parameters in the presence of atmospheric turbulence for a terrestrial optical transmission. First, both the first- and second-moment characteristic of polarization parameters are derived based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. Then, numerical simulations are presented for different propagating distances, optical source properties, and turbulent strengths. Finally, a series of well-designed experiments are carried out to verify the theory with turbulence-controlled conditions, where the polarization states are measured at two wavelengths, respectively. As a result, the theoretical predictions conform closely to the experimental data, and both show that with the increasing turbulent strength, the first-order moment of polarization parameters varies in different trends, while their second-order moment increases. The proposed approach is promising for building a comprehensive statistical model of polarization and improving the performance of a free-space optical communication link.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose, analyze, and experimentally verify polarization-multiplexed optical wireless transmission with coherent detection as a means of improving performance and increasing the per-wavelength data rate in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. It is first shown that in terrestrial last-mile applications, the polarization state changes of the optical wireless signal are governed by optical source properties both in the absence and in the presence of mild to moderately severe turbulence. Under these conditions, it is shown that the polarization evolution is reduced to a polarization state rotation wherein the cross-polarization interference can be equalized with well-known blind algorithms. We also experimentally verify the analytical findings, demonstrating 112 Gb/s POLMUX-QPSK transmission with coherent detection in a non-fading free-space channel, and numerically extend the experimental results to turbulent settings by invoking the lognormal model for turbulence-induced fading. Performance gains of 5-14 dB along with a doubling of the data rate through polarization multiplexing are exhibited compared to legacy single-polarization intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) optical wireless systems. The presented analytical and experimental results indicate that the proposed approach is promising for notably increasing the data rate in last-mile free-space optical transmission.

Abstract:Turbulence is an intractable issue for underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC). Most literature has been mainly focused on the modeling of turbulence channels and performance analysis rather than mitigation of the turbulence effect, especially from the experimental aspects. In this paper, a multilevel polarization shift keying (PolSK) modulation based UOWC system is established utilizing a 15 m-long water tank, and the system performance is investigated under specific temperature gradient-induced turbulence and various transmitted optical powers. Experimental results show the feasibility of the PolSK in alleviating the effect of turbulence, and the bit error rate performance significantly outperforms traditional intensity-based modulation schemes which have difficulty in obtaining an optimal decision threshold in a turbulence channel.

Abstract:To improve the data rate in laser communication systems, a new modulation scheme, which uses the photon polarisation property, is proposed. Performance analysis and Monte-Carlo simulation are made, considering both non-turbulent and heavy-turbulent atmospheric conditions. The simulation results show that the data rate is twice as much as that of pulse-position modulation in a broad range of optical link efficiency.

Abstract:The dual-hop free-space optical (FSO) communication link for polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an atmospheric chamber with the optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensating the turbulence-induced signal distortions. The phase fluctuations can be effectively reduced by the OPC, as the error vector magnitudes are 10.03% and 8.28% decreased for x- and y-polarization. At the bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3), the power penalty of the dual-hop link with OPC is 2.85 or 2.34 dB lower than that of each polarization without OPC.

Abstract:To solve the problems of interruption events and the high bit-error rate of the FSO system caused by atmospheric turbulence, an FSO cooperative communication scheme based on system polarization code is proposed. In this scheme, the upper limit of the average bit-error rate of the atmospheric turbulence channel is used to construct the frozen bit set of the system polarization code, and the information bit set of the S−R link is recovered by using the ownership relationship between the frozen bit set of the S−R link and the S−D link at the destination node. Finally, the information bits of the S−R link and S−D link are combined using equal gain combination, and the original information is recovered by decoding. The simulation results show that the FSO cooperative communication system can overcome the influence of atmospheric turbulence and improve the system performance, and the bit-error rate performance of the FSO cooperative communication system can be improved by at least 0.5dB; the outage probability of the FSO cooperative communication system can be reduced to less than 10−7, and it shows a stable inhibitory effect on strong turbulence conditions.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel polarization-multiplexing system for free-space optical links is proposed. Data is specially designed at the transmitter while received by coupling two lights in different states of polarization (SOP) after polarization rotation at the receiver. Based on this design, the closed form expression for bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the system is given. Our results indicate that polarization control error has no obvious influence on the system performance when it is less than 10°. Performance of our system is superior to the traditional binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) scheme on overcoming phase fluctuation.

Abstract:A modulating retro-reflector (MRR) with optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensation is presented and demonstrated to mitigate the turbulence-induced channel distortion for high-speed coherent free-space optical (FSO) communications. The impact of the turbulence on the beam spot, the phase fluctuation and the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed for the MRR FSO link carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals with spatial or single-mode fiber (SMF)-based OPC. The mitigation of the atmospheric turbulence is verified by comparing the transmission performance of the MRR FSO links with and without OPC. The compensation using SMF-based OPC is experimentally demonstrated in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric chamber. The BER is improved by two orders of magnitude in the turbulent channel with the temperature difference of 250 degrees C, and the power penalty is reduced by about 2.0 dB, which agree well with the simulation results. A larger receiving aperture size will improve the compensation effect

Abstract:Free-space-optical (FSO) coherent communication is a cost-effective, license-free, high-sensitivity and wide-bandwidth access technique for high date rates applications, whereas its performance strongly suffers from the turbulent atmosphere for the reason of both intensity scintillation and phase fluctuation. In this paper, the intensity scintillation is modeled as a multiplicative random process following the Gamma-Gamma distribution while the phase fluctuation is proved to satisfy Gaussian distribution. And the slow varying characteristic of the power spectrum destiny of the atmosphere is verified. In our research the Mach-Zehnder-interferometer (MZI) based coherent differential-phase-shift-keying (DPSK) transmission system is employed. And its bit-error-rate (BER) performance is studied with BER expression given by Meijer-G function substitution. Besides, a novel simulation model of the atmosphere channel is established based on which effects of the atmosphere to BER performance of the system are simulated. From the simulation, we know over FSO links, to guarantee the performance of the coherent system, measures should be taken to compensate the intensity of the signal when the Rytov variance is over 1.0, and the statistical standard deviation of the received signal frequency should be compensated to less than 100MHz when the transmission rate is 1Gbit/s. By comparing performances of MZI-DPSK and traditional PSK, the advantages of MZI-DPSK are presented.

Abstract:We give the closed-form solution of cross-spectral density matrix of a partially coherent beam propagating through the anisotropic atmosphere turbulence along the horizontal link, and investigate the effects of turbulence and source parameters on the polarization state of beams on propagation. The results show that we can improve the performance of wireless optical communication systems with polarization modulation and polarization multiplexing methods by decreasing wavelength or increasing source size. The characteristic that polarization state of beams is uniquely determined by anisotropic turbulence after a sufficiently long propagation distance is also verified.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of the high complexity of polarization code construction under free-space optical communication, this paper proposes a segmented turbulent partial order construction method, which effectively reduces the complexity of polarization code construction while obtaining the highest possible quality of communication performance. The method introduces the generalized partial order technique into the atmospheric strong turbulent channel, determines the reliability relationship between each sub-channel in the strong turbulence using Monte Carlo simulation, and combines it with the polarization weight formula to find the optimal parameter values in different signal-to-noise ratio ranges to construct the polarization code. The simulation results showed that the method had a similar communication performance compared with the conventional Monte Carlo construction method for different turbulence intensities, code rates, and code lengths, and its construction complexity was negligible due to its offline operation nature. For different code rate code lengths and BER of 10-4, this method generated about 0.03–0.17 dB loss compared with the Monte Carlo method; for different turbulence strengths and BER of 10-4, only a loss of about 0.05–0.07 dB was generated. It provides a solution for the efficient application of polarization codes under free-space optical communication.

Abstract:The authors experimentally demonstrate a modulating retro-reflector based on electro-optical in-phase quadrature modulator and test it in an atmospheric cell simulated atmosphere environment by using 80 Gb/s polarisation-multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (Pol-MUX QPSK) signals. At the BER of 1 × 10 -3 , the power penalties of the x - and y -polarisation signals are both <;1.1 dB when the temperature difference in the atmospheric cell is <;250°C.
