Abstract:We experimentally investigated the self-healing property of radially self-accelerating beam (RSAB). RSAB is a kind of nondiffracting self-accelerating beam, which can accelerate along helical trajectories and keep shape invariants in propagation. It can be produced by the superposition of two or more Bessel beams. We experimentally generated several RSABs by superposition of a small number of Bessel beams and studied the self-healing property of RSAB under two different perturbations. One case of perturbations is that the obstacle is localized on-axis and blocks the central part; the other case is where the obstacle partially blocks the off-axis part. The results obtained in both perturbations show that the RSAB can self-reconstruct after propagating certain distances, which is in good agreement with numerical simulations. The results show that RSAB possesses the same self-healing ability as Bessel beams.

Abstract:A type of self-bending symmetric cusp beams with four accelerating intensity maxima is theoretically and experimentally presented. Distinguished from the reported regular polygon beams, the symmetric cusp beams simultaneously exhibit peculiar features of natural autofocusing and self-acceleration during propagation. Further, such beams take the shape of a fine longitudinal needle-like structure at the focal region and possess the strong ability of self-healing over obstacles. All these intriguing properties were verified experimentally. Particularly, the spatial profile of the reconstructed beam exhibits spatially sculpted optical structure with four siamesed curved arms. Thus, we anticipate that the structured beam will benefit optical guiding and optofluidics in surprising ways.

Abstract:We study and realize unidirectional flexural wave transmission in finite phononic crystal beams based on the boundary defect modes. First, we show that by carrying a periodic array of concentrated masses, conventional prismatic beams become phononic crystal beams having multiple transmittance peaks in odd-order bandgaps. We point out that these bandgap transmittance peaks are induced by pass-band splitting and are essentially defect modes due to the existence of the imperfect boundary in finite beam structures. Significant asymmetric flexural wave propagation can be observed in these defect modes by gradually changing each concentrated mass. Using the spectral element method (SEM), the relationship between the concentrated gradient masses and the directivity at the defect modes is discussed. To realize concentrated gradient masses, we periodically attach near-point-contact steel balls with gradient diameters on a prismatic beam. The formation of the bandgaps and unidirectional displacement transmission are experimentally validated with a high-sensitive point-wise fiber Bragg grating displacement sensing system. Asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation is further demonstrated in the time domain with a Hanning-windowed tone burst signal excited at the two ends of the phononic crystal beam. Agreements between the SEM and experimental results clearly indicate that the asymmetric one-way flexural wave propagation can be achieved in prismatic beams carrying a periodic array of concentrated gradient masses.

Abstract:A new type of Bessel-like beam which can be generated by using Bessel gratings to modulate the amplitude and phase of a Bessel beam is proposed. In analogy to study a Bessel beam in free space, the intensity evolution and self-healing property of the Bessel-like beam have been studied. Meanwhile, based on the Fresnel diffraction integral, the propagation of the Bessel-like beam in free space has also been investigated. Results show that the Bessel-like beam and the Bessel-Gaussian-like beams have some special and interesting properties.

Abstract:Recently, V. V. Kotlyar et al. [Opt. Lett.39, 2395 (2014)] have theoretically proposed a novel kind of three-parameter diffraction-free beam with a crescent profile, namely, the asymmetric Bessel (aB) beam. The asymmetry degree of such nonparaxial modes was shown to depend on a nonnegative real parameter c. We present a more generalized asymmetric Bessel mode in which the parameter c is a complex constant. This parameter controls not only the asymmetry degree of the mode but also the orientation of the optical crescent, and affects the energy distribution and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the beam. As a proof of concept, the high-quality generation of asymmetric Bessel-Gauss beams was demonstrated with the super-pixel method using a digital micromirror device (DMD). We investigated the near-field properties as well as the far field features of such beams, and the experimental observations were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Additionally, we provided an effective way to control the beam's asymmetry and orientation, which may find potential applications in light-sheet microscopy and optical manipulation.

Abstract:Contrarily to a common belief, any beam of light possesses to a some extent the ability to "reconstruct itself" after hitting an obstacle. The celebrated Arago spot phenomenon is nothing but a manifestation of this property. In this work we analyze the self-healing mechanism from both a mathematical and a physical point of view, eventually finding a new expression for the minimum reconstruction distance, which is valid for \emph{any} kind of beam, including Gaussian ones. Finally, a witness function that quantify the self-reconstruction capability of a beam is proposed and tested. The results presented here help clarifying the physics underlying self-healing mechanism in optical beams.

Abstract:We present a new type of beams which are exact solutions to the paraxial Helmholtz equation. Such beams feature strict self-similar transverse profile during the propagation, and the peak intensity remains unchanged. These beams constitute a unique beam mode in free space, which can be regarded as an intermediate mode between non-diffracting beams and traditional self-similar beams. Thus, we name these beams the “perfect self-similar beams”. We show that the transverse profile of these beams scales parabolically during propagation. As such, our work reveals a previously unnoticed beam mode which holds both main characteristics of self-similar beams and non-diffracting beams, and expands conceptually the special beam modes.

Abstract:We report the theoretical and experimental study of the self-healing property of an Airy beam related to its phase. We find that, even when the phase of an Airy beam is not preserved, the beam still exhibits the self-healing property but undergoes a severe diffraction. To decrease the diffraction effect, we utilize an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) image-cloning system based on position selective absorption effect to further demonstrate the self-healing phenomenon. Our experimental results show excellent agreement with the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The self-healing property of laser beams is of great interest. And a laser beam with spatial structures is also widely concerned due to its important applications in lots of areas. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the self-healing and transformation characteristics of obstructed structured beams composed by incoherent or coherent superposition of multiple Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes. We reveal that partially obstructed single HG mode can recover itself or transfer to a lower order in the far-field. When the obstacle retains one pair of edged bright spots of HG mode in each direction of its two symmetry axes, the beam structure information (number of knot lines) along each axis can be restored. Otherwise, it will be transferred to the corresponding low-order HG mode or multi interference fringes in the far-field, according to the interval of the two most edged remaining spots on each axis. It's proved that the above effect is induced by the diffraction and interference results of the partially retained light field. This principle is also applicable to multi-eigenmodes composed beams with special customized optical structures. Then the self-healing and transformation characteristics of the partially obstructed HG modes composed structured beams are investigated. It's found that the HG modes incoherently composed structured beams have a strong ability to recover themselves in the far-field after occlusion. These investigations can expand the applications of optical lattice structures of laser communication, atom optical capture, and optical imaging.

Abstract:The paper presents a novel analysis of Floquet-Bloch flexural waves in a periodic lattice-like structure consisting of flexural beam ligaments. A special feature of this structure is in the presence of the rotational inertia, which is commonly neglected in conventional models of the Euler-Bernoulli type. The dispersion properties of the Rayleigh beam structure with rotational inertia include degeneracies linked to Dirac cones on the dispersion diagrams as well as directional anisotropy and special refraction properties. Steering of Dirac cones is described for rectangular flexural structures with a rotational inertia. Numerical examples for a forced network of Rayleigh and Euler-Bernoulli beams illustrate directional localisation, negative refraction, localisation at an interface and neutrality for propagating plane waves across a structured interface for a frequency range corresponding to a Dirac cone.

Abstract:Bessel beam propagation in scattering media is simulated using the angular spectrum method combined with slice-by-slice propagation model. Generating Bessel beams with a spatial light modulator, which provides a means to adjust flexibly the parameters of the Bessel beam, allows us to validate the simulation results experimentally. The study reveals that the self-reconstructing length changes oppositely with the axicon angle (i.e., the larger the axicon angle, the shorter the self-reconstructing length). The radius of the incident beam has little influence on the self-reconstruction of the Bessel beam central lobe.

Abstract:An alternative and convenient theoretical model is proposed to describe a flexible anomalous hollow beam of elliptical symmetry with an elliptical solid core, which was observed in experiment recently (Phys. Rev. Lett, 94 (2005) 134802). In this model, the electric field of anomalous hollow beam is expressed as a finite sum of elliptical Gaussian modes. Flat-topped beams, dark hollow beams and Gaussian beams are special cases of our model. Analytical propagation formulae for coherent and partially coherent anomalous hollow beams passing through astigmatic ABCD optical systems are derived. Some numerical examples are calculated to show the propagation and focusing properties of coherent and partially coherent anomalous hollow beams. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We employed caustic theory to analyze the propagation dynamics of partially coherent self-accelerating beams such as self-healing of partially coherent Airy beams. Our findings revealed that as the spatial coherence decreases, the self-healing ability of beams increases. This result have been demonstrated both in simulation and experiment. This is an innovative application of the caustic theory to the field of partially coherent structured beams, and provides a comprehensive understanding of self-healing property. Our results have significant implications for practical applications of partially coherent beams in fields such as optical communication, encryption, and imaging.

Abstract:Breaking time or/and spatial symmetry can lead to unprecedent mechanical responses of a structure, the design of which is usually very intricate. This paper proposes a simple design of a beam structure with spatiotemporal modulation. In fact, a time-varying axial load applied to the ends of an elastic beam will induce space-time dependent axial force propagating in the form of longitudinal wave in the beam, which can modulate spatiotemporally the propagation of transverse bending waves. The governing equation is derived, of which the Floquet solution leads to a quadratic eigenvalue problem that can be solved for the frequency as a function of the wavenumber. Theoretical results show the existence of asymmetric wavenumber bandgaps and the unique dispersion diagram which is not periodic with respect to time or space. The breaking of temporal symmetry enables nonreciprocal propagation of transverse bending waves, which is confirmed by the finite element simulations. This modulation method offers promise for applications in the fields of elastic wave filter, frequency converter and magnitude amplifier.

Abstract:Owing to their robustness against diffraction, Bessel beams (BBs) offer special advantages in various applications. To enhance their applicability, we present a method to generate self-accelerating zeroth-order BBs along predefined trajectories with tunable z direction intensity profiles. The character of tunable z direction intensity profiles in non-diffracting self-accelerating BBs potentially can attract interest in the regimes of particle manipulation, microfabrication, and free-space optical interconnects.

Abstract:The propagation of a new type of Ince-Gaussian-like beam along a predesigned parabolic trajectory in the free space is investigated numerically and experimentally. The Ince-Gaussian-like beam breaks the characteristic that the shape remains invariant during propagation and it obtains the property of self-focusing that the unmodulated Ince-Gaussian beam has not. The enhancement of the quadratic coefficients Ω of parabolic trajectories increases the focus times but shortens the focal depth. In addition, we also investigate the effect of the parameter of the ellipticity ɛ , which only affects the maximum intensity and the intensity distribution after the focusing. Furthermore, different modes, orders p and degrees m of the Ince-Gaussian-like beam also influence the propagation patterns. Moreover, we investigate the self-healing property of the IGLB by introducing a soft well function. We anticipate that our works have potential value in the laser energy focus and optical transport.

Abstract:<p>Modulated by the spatial phase, Airy-like beams that possess the faster and better self-healing as well as the greater acceleration along the desired arbitrary trajectory are introduced. Airy-like beams have the strong spontaneous-focusing ability and the peak value of the focal plane is 5.4 times that of the initial plane when traveling along the quadratic function trajectory. Besides, the larger quadratic coefficient and the smaller constant term of the quadratic function can enhance the self-healing and the spontaneous-focusing of the beams. When the beams transmit along the snakelike trajectory, the original main lobe separates a new main lobe, and the energy will concentrate on the new main lobe. Airy-like beams, along a hyperbolic-secant trajectory, can remain non-diffraction over long distances. However, when traveling along a hyperbolic trajectory, the evolution process is very similar to that of Airy-Gaussian vortex beams. These excellent properties can be applied to the special beams' modulation and optimization. Furthermore, it may provide a way for constructing beams along the special trajectory with the desired spontaneous-focusing and self-healing.</p>

Abstract:We investigate the self-healing property of focused circular Airy beams (FCAB), and this property is associated with the transverse Poynting vector (energy flow) for a better interpretation. We both experimentally and numerically show the effect of the obstruction's position, size and shape on the self-healing property of FCAB. It is found that FCAB will heal if the obstruction is placed at the area between the two foci of FCAB, and it has the least influence on the FCAB when the obstruction is placed near the lens' rear focal plane, whereas FCAB cannot heal if the obstruction is out of the area between two foci.
