Abstract:Herein is presented a proof-of-concept study of protease sensing that combines nontoxic silicon quantum dots (SiQDs) with Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The SiQDs serve as the donor and an organic dye as the acceptor. The dye is covalently attached to the SiQDs using a peptide linker. Enzymatic cleavage of the peptide leads to changes in FRET efficiency. The combination of interfacial design and optical imaging presented in this work opens opportunities for use of nontoxic SiQDs relevant to intracellular sensing and imaging.

Abstract:In this paper we present recent advances in Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) sensing and bioimaging using nontoxic silicon quantum dots. (SiQDs) In our work, we prepare SiQDs-dye conjugates, with SiQDs serving as the donor which are covalently attached to organic dye acceptors via self-assembled monolayer linkers. Enzymatic cleavage of the peptide leads to changes in FRET response which was monitored using fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM-FRET). The combination of interfacial design and optical imaging presented in this work opens new opportunities for bio-applications using nontoxic silicon quantum dots.

Abstract:Composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) grafted with polystyrene, poly(4-vinylpyridine), poly(styrene-b-4-vinylpyridine) and poly(styrene-co-4-vinylpyridine) were prepared by a nitroxide mediated “living” free radical polymerization. The electrical responses of the composites towards organic vapors of methanol, chloroform and tetrahydrofuran were investigated at room temperature. It was found that the gas sensitive properties of the composites towards the organic vapors depended on both the compositions of the polymers and the nature of the vapors. Based on the observations of the morphology of the composite films by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the sensing mechanism was explored and the different sensing behaviors were proposed to relate to the varied morphologies of the composites with different compositions. The varying sensing characteristics of the composites with different polymer compositions may be a basis for constructing sensor arrays with good selectivity towards organic vapors at room temperature.

Abstract:Tetraphenylpyrazine-triphenylamine (TPP-TPA) was used to detect water traces in organic solvents by monitoring the shift of the fluorescence peak wavelength. This wavelength based method avoids the intrinsic problems of fluorescence intensity change based methods. The use of optical fibres for the detection provides a remote and field-deployable sensing ability.

Abstract:The image illustrates a natural phenomenon of droplet formation caused by the condensation of vapor on a nonwettable surface at temperature below the dew point. Real-time observing the light scattered from the droplets may lead to a new mechanism for vapor sensing. However, the dew point of organic vapor in an air sample is usually far below room temperature. The problem has been solved by J. Wu and co-workers using porous silicon infiltrated with ionic liquids, on which the organic vapor can be condensed into microdroplets at a temperature far above the dew point. This finding, described on page 3775, leads to the creation of novel optical vapor sensor, which combines the light scattering effect of droplets with the sharp spectral features of pSi photonic crystal.

Abstract:High-quality quantum-dot/polystyrene nanofibers (QD/PS NFs) are synthesized by drawing solvated PS doped with CdSe/ZnS QDs. As-drawn QD/PS NFs offer ultra-long-term photostability, flexibility, and excellent optical properties for sensing applications. Based on these active NFs, optical humidity sensors with extremely low power consumption, fast response, and long-term stability are successfully demonstrated, which may lead to a new category of nanometer-scale optical sensors.

Abstract:Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have emerged as promising sensors targeting chemical analytes in vapors and liquids. However, the direct detection of solid chemicals by OFETs has not been achieved. Here for the first time, we describe the direct detection of solid chemical analytes by organic electronics. An organic diode structure based on a horizontal side-by-side p-n junction was adopted and shown to be superior to OFETs for this purpose. The diodes showed more than 40% current decrease upon exposure to 1 ppm melamine powders. The estimated detection limit to melamine can potentially reach the ppb range. This is the first demonstration of an electronic signal from an interaction between a solid and an organic p-n junction directly, which suggests that our lateral organic diodes are excellent platforms for the development of future sensors when direct detection of solid chemicals is needed. The approach developed here is general and can be extended to chemical sensors targeting various analytes, opening unprecedented opportunities for the development of low-cost and high-performance solid chemical sensors.

Abstract:Significantly enhanced vapor condensation and formation of microdroplets occur on porous silicon (pSi) infiltrated with a high amount of ionic liquid. The resonant light reflected from the pSi rugate filter is scattered by the condensed microdroplets. Abstract:Thanks to their extremely large surface-to-volume ratio, colloidal quantum dots are potential high-performance sensing materials. However, previous sensing works using their spontaneous emission suffer from low sensitivities. The absence of an amplification process and the presence of the steric hindrance of long-chain organic ligands are two possible causations. Herein we propose that these two issues can be circumvented by using the amplified spontaneous emission of colloidal quantum dots capped by short-chain inorganic ligands. To exemplify this concept, we performed humidity sensing and observed a ∼31 times enhancement in sensitivity. Meanwhile, we found that the amplified spontaneous emission threshold power was reduced by 34% in a high humidity environment. On the basis of our transient absorption measurements, we attribute these observations to the mitigation of ultrafast subpicosecond trapping processes, which are enabled by the absorption of water molecules.

Abstract:Detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is crucial in industrial production, environmental monitoring, and public safety. VOCs sensors need to be intrinsically safe, given the flammability and toxicity of common VOCs. Fiber optic sensors offer a passive and flexible solution for VOCs detection, attracting significant attention from researchers. In this study, ZIF-8, a subset of metal-organic frameworks, is applied to a side-polished silicon wafer, forming an open-cavity optical fiber Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) with a fiber patch cable and a 3D-printed structural part. The sensing performance for prevalent VOCs, including methylbenzene, methanol, and ethanol, is experimentally explored, exhibiting sensitivities of 0.118 p.m./ppm, 0.177 p.m./ppm, and 0.412 p.m./ppm, respectively. Sensitivity differences are analyzed and demonstrated at the molecular level. The proposed technologies offer advantages such as easy fabrication, intrinsic safety, small size, and good selectivity, providing an alternative for VOCs detection in industrial production.

Abstract:An ethanol vapor sensor based on a microfiber with a quantum-dot (QD) gel coating is proposed and demonstrated. The QD gel was made from UV glue as the gel matrix and CdSe/ZnS QDs with a concentration of 1 mg/mL. The drawing and coating processes were conducted by using a simple and low-cost system developed for this study. Bending, ethanol sensing, temperature response, and time response tests were carried out, respectively. The experimental results showed that the fabricated sensor had a high sensitivity of -3.3%/ppm, a very low temperature cross-sensitivity of 0.17 ppm/degrees C, and a fast response time of 1.1 s. The easily fabricated robust structure and the excellent sensing performance render the sensor a promising platform for real ethanol sensing applications.

Abstract:A photonic-nose for the detection and discrimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was constructed. Each sensing element on the photonic sensor array was formed by infiltrating a specific type of ionic liquid (IL) into the pore channel of a patterned porous silicon (PSi) chip. Upon exposure to VOC, the density of IL dramatically decreased due to the nano-confinement effect. As a result, the IL located in pore channel expanded its volume and protrude out of the pore channel, leading to the formation of microdroplets on the PSi surface. These VOC-stimulated microdroplets could scatter the light reflected from the PSi rugate filter, thereby producing an optical response to VOC. The intensity of the optical response produced by IL/PSi sensor mainly depends on the size and shape of microdroplets, which is related to the concentration of VOC and the physi-chemical propertied of ILs. For ethanol vapor, the optical response has linear relationship with its relative vapor pressure within 0-60%. The LOD of the IL/PSi sensor for ethanol detection is calculated to be 1.3 ppm. It takes around 30 s to reach a full optical response, while the time for recovery is less than 1 min. In addition, the sensor displayed good stability and reproducibility. Owing to the different molecular interaction between IL and VOC, the ILs/PSi sensor array can generate a unique cross-reactive "fingerprint" in response to a specific type of VOC analyte. With the assistance of image technologies and principle components analysis (PCA), rapid discrimination of VOC analyte could be achieved based on the pattern recognition of photonic sensor array. Abstract:A droplet- type optical fiber volatile organic compound ( VOC) sensor based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is proposed to detect the leakage of VOCs. The droplet-type sensor is formed from a standard single- mode optical fiber that is bent and encapsulated in PDMS. In the experiment, the concentration of the VOC is obtained by monitoring the wavelength drift of output spectrum of the sensor. The experimental results show that when PDMS absorbs the VOC, its volume expands, and the effective bending length of the droplet-type optical fiber structure decreases. The output spectrum of the sensor is blue- shifted when the volume fraction of the VOC ranges from 0 to 9960 x 10(-6). The sensitivity and detection accuracy of the sensor are - 0. 542 pm/10(-6) and 37 x 10(-6), respectively, with a response time of 8. 3 min. When the intensity demodulation method is adopted, the sensitivity of the sensor is the highest (- 3. 22x10(-4) dB/10(-6)) at the wavelength of 1539. 00 nm, and its detection accuracy is 31 x 10(-6).

Leveraging Coupled Solvatofluorochromism and Fluorescence Quenching in Nitrophenyl-Containing Thiazolothiazoles for Efficient Organic Vapor Sensing

Abstract:Solvatofluorochromic molecules provide strikingly high fluorescent outputs to monitor a wide range of biological, environmental, or materials-related sensing processes. Here, thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) fluorophores equipped with simple alkylamino and nitrophenyl substituents for solid-state, high-performance chemo-responsive sensing applications are reported. Nitroaromatic substituents are known to strongly quench dye fluorescence, however, the TTz core subtly modulates intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) enabling strong, locally excited-state fluorescence in non-polar conditions. In polar media, a planar ICT excited-state shows near complete quenching, enabling a twisted excited-state emission to be observed. These unique fluorescent properties (spectral shifts of 0.13 - 0.87 eV and large transition dipole moments Δµ = 20.4 - 21.3 D) are leveraged to develop highly sought-after chemo-responsive, organic vapor optical sensors. The sensors are developed by embedding the TTz fluorophores within a poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) block copolymer to form fluorescent dye/polymer composites (ΦF = 70 - 97%). The composites respond reversibly to a comprehensive list of organic solvents and show low vapor concentration sensing (e.g., 0.04% solvent saturation vapor pressure of THF - 66 ppm). The composite films can distinguish between solvent vapors with near complete fluorescent quenching observed when exposed to their saturated solvent vapor pressures, making this an extremely promising material for optical chemo-responsive sensing.
Aggregation-Induced Emission Molecule Microwire-Based Specific Organic Vapor Detector through Structural Modification

Abstract:An optical organic vapor sensor array based on colorimetric or fluorescence changes quantified by spectroscopy provides an efficient method for realizing rapid identification and detection of organic vapor, but improving the sensitivity of the optical organic vapor sensor is challenging. Here, AIE/polymer (AIE, ggregation-induced emission) composites into microwires arrays are fabricated as organic vapor sensors with specific recognition and high sensitivity for different vapors using the capillary-bridge-mediated assembly method. Such organic vapor sensor successfully detects organic vapor relying on a swelling-induced fluorescence change of the AIE/polymer composites, combating the unique property of AIE molecules and vapor absorption-induced polymer swelling. A series of AIE/polymer composites into microwires arrays with four different groups on the AIE molecule and four different side chains on the polymer is fabricated to detect four different organic vapors. The mechanism for improved sensitivity of the AIE/polymer composites microwires arrays sensors is the same because of the similar polarity between the group of AIE molecules and the vapor molecules. Highly sensitive fiber-optic chemical pH sensor based on surface modification of optical fiber with ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots

Abstract:The pH value plays a vital role in many biological and chemical reactions. In this work, the fiber-optic chemical pH sensors were fabricated based on carboxyl ZnCdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and tapered optical fiber. The photoluminescence (PL) intensity of QDs is pH-dependence because protonation and deprotonation can affect the process of electron-hole recombination. The evanescent wave of tapered optical fiber was used as excitation source in the process of PL. To obtain higher sensitivity, the end faces of fiber were optimized for cone region. By lengthening the cone region and shrinking the end diameter of optical fiber, evanescent wave was enhanced and the excitation times of QDs were increased, which improved the PL intensity and the sensitivity of the sensor. The sensitivity of sensor can reach as high as 0.139/pH in the range of pH 6.00–9.01. The surface functional modification was adopted to prepare sensing films. The carboxyl groups on the QDs ligands are chemically bonded to the fiber surface, which is good for response time (40 s) and stability (decreased 0.9 % for 5 min). These results demonstrated that ZnCdSe/ZnS QDs-based fiber-optic chemical pH sensors are promising approach in rapid and precise pH detection.

Abstract:For the first time, a reproducible surface plasmon-enhanced optical sensor for the detection of gaseous formaldehyde was proposed, which was fabricated by depositing a mixture of CdSe@ZnS quantum dots (QDs), fumed silica (FS), and gold nanoparticles (GNs) on the surface of a silica sphere array to meet the urgent requirement of a rapid, sensitive, and highly convenient formaldehyde detection method. Because of the spectral overlap between QDs and GNs, plasmon-enhanced fluorescence was observed in the film of QDs/FS/GNs. When exposed to formaldehyde molecules, the enhanced fluorescence was quenched linearly with the increase of formaldehyde concentration in the range of 0.5-2.0 ppm. The reason is attributed to the nonradiative electron transfer from QDs to the carbonyl of formaldehyde molecules with the assistance of amino groups. Our results demonstrate that the designed sensors are capable of detecting ultralow concentration gaseous formaldehyde at room temperature with a fast response-recovery time and excellent selectivity, stability, and reproducibility. This work provides a simple and low-cost approach for optical formaldehyde sensor fabrication and shows promising applications in environmental detection.

Abstract:An integrated volatile organic compounds (VOC) sensor based on silicon photonic ring resonator system is presented in this paper. A thin absorption layer is coated on the silicon surface required to selectively trap the target gas and response as refractive index change. This acts as the main sensing unit, which subsequently affect the resonance peak position. The relative high sensitivity (1.7 pm/1000 ppm for acetone), high stability (<;1 pm drift) and fast response time (~20 s) make it a perfect candidate for VOC safety monitoring and warning.

Abstract:Public awareness of the toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has led to increased requirements for direct measurement of these substances. This work reports the sensitive detection of VOCs at the ppb level by an interferometric sensor based on the multilayer silica-nanochannel membrane (MSNM). The MSNM is fabricated by layer-by-layer stacking of a free-standing ultrathin SNM composed of regularly ordered channels with an ultrasmall diameter of about 2.3 nm and an ultrahigh density of about 4 x 10(12) cm(-2). Light reflected from parallel interfaces of the MSNM gives rise to the interferometric pattern with constructive and destructive fringes. The adsorption of VOCs to a highly porous MSNM varies the refractive index of the MSNM, resulting in the shift of the reflectometric interference spectrum (RIS) and thus yielding highly sensitive responses with a limit of detection (LOD) at the ppb level. Moreover, the sensor selectively responds to polar ethanol and acetone, as well as aromatic benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, but is insensitive to nonpolar ethane or hexane. The selectivity most likely arises from hydrogen bonding and dipole interaction of VOCs with silica surface.
