Abstract:This paper deals with the inventory control problem for the hybrid production system. The manufacturing and remanufacturing operations simultaneously satisfy the customer demand. The product returns can enter the global serviceable inventory after being remanufactured. The global serviceable inventory takes the (s, S) continuous review replenishment policy. When the global serviceable inventory level drops to s, the manufacturing activity begins to produce in a batch and to replenish the global serviceable inventory up to S after a stochastic lead time. The changes of inventory state under the stochastic demand and product returns are illustrated with the Markov quasi-birth-death (QBD) processes. The hybrid inventory system is formulated as a Markov decision model. The matrix-geometric approach is used to derive the steady stationary transition probabilities. The optimal inventory parameters can be obtained by minimizing the long-run average cost. One numerical example is taken to illustrate the proposed methodology.

Abstract:We investigate stock-replenishment problem in a one-warehouse-n-retailer supply chain, in which warehouse supplies single product to n-retailers. When supply chain is designed to gain optimal system cost, some firms intend to deviate the agreement to maximize their profit, and such kind of deviation may cause supply chain inefficiency. In this paper, game theory is used as a tool to balance profit among retailers. When retailers replenish their stock in a Nash Equilibrium, each can maximize own profit while pondering other retailers. Mathematical model for this n-retailer game is constructed. And at last, we prove that there exists at least one equilibrium in this game. © copyright ASCE 2007.

Abstract:This paper studies a two-echelon supply chain, with a warehouse and n retailers. The entire supply chain is characterized by several parameters including demand variance, inventory holding cost and backorder penalty cost. We investigate replenishment strategies of this system under decentralized and centralized control. We consider horizontal information sharing between these retailers when the shared information is valuable for stabilization of the system. It is shown that unique Nash equilibrium of the competitive retailers system exists. We also propose demand-depended and equational coordination schemes. These three coordination schemes are compared numerically, the result of the simulation show that penalty cost and holding cost effect replenishment in Nash equilibrium greatly, and although the set of strategies under profit oriented Nash equilibrium balance the supply chain system, it increases system cost.

Abstract:We investigate stock-replenishment problem in a distributed one-warehouse-n-retailer supply chain, in which warehouse supplying single product to n competing retailers. Each retailer intends to maximize his payoff. The profit rate per unit at retailers depends on stock available at warehouse, which replenishes his inventory from an exterior resource with ample supply. At the beginning of each period, stock at warehouse is finite, ordering strategy of each retailer has impact on other retailers. We characterize coordination solution to this distributed system with a Nash equilibrium. That is : retailers are decision makers and warehouse acts as a supervisor. When retailers replenish their stock in a Nash equilibrium, each can maximize own profit while pondering other retailers. Mathematical model for this n-retailer game is constructed. And at last, we prove that there exist only one equilibrium in this game.

Abstract:We study a continuous-review, two-echelon inventory system with one central warehouse, multiple local facilities, and each facility facing random demand. Local facilities replenish their stock from the central warehouse (or distribution center), which in turn places orders at an outside supplier with an ample supply. Inventory replenishment at each location incurs a fixed-plus-variable cost for each shipment. The optimal policy remains unknown, and even if it exists, such a policy must be extremely complicated. Instead, we evaluate a class of easy-to-implement heuristics, called modified echelon (r, Q) policies. The parameters for such a heuristic are obtained by solving a set of independent single-stage systems. We show that the proposed policy is asymptotically optimal, as pairs of system primitives, such as the ratios of the fixed cost of the central facility to those of the local facilities, are scaled up. We also show that as the number of retailers grows, the performance bound of the heuristic converges to a primitive-dependent constant.

Abstract:In this article we study the optimal joint replenishment policy of single-period two-product inventory model with stochastic demands and downward substitution. The downward substitution means that using the stocks of products of higher class can satisfy demands for product of a lower class. Then we construct an optimization model and further prove that the objective function of this model is convex with respect to the inventory levels of these two products after their orders have arrived. Finally we obtain the optimal joint replenishment policy of this inventory system.

Abstract:This paper considers the periodic-review stochastic joint replenishment problem (JRP) under Bookbinder and Tan's static-dynamic uncertainty control policy. According to a static-dynamic uncertainty control rule, the decision maker fixes timing of replenishments once and for all at the beginning of the planning horizon, the inventory position is then raised to a predefined order-up-to-position at the beginning of each replenishment period. In this policy, freezing the replenishment times ameliorates the inherent difficulties pertinent to replenishment coordination of multiple products, whereas dynamic order quantities facilitate dealing with uncertain demands. We adapt and extend an earlier mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for computing static-dynamic uncertainty policy parameters, and demonstrate that the same can be used to approximate the optimal control rule for the JRP, also known as $(\sigma, \vec{S})$ policy. An extensive computational study illustrates the effectiveness of our approach when compared to alternative approaches in the literature.

Abstract:This study evaluates the performance of a multi-item joint replenishment inventory model. In this model, the retailer uses a continuous review QS inventory policy. We assume that the customers who can not be satisfied by the retailer immediately will be lost, which is the main difference between this study and the previous research, and also the main contribution of this article. Based on the lost sale assumption and other assumptions on the outstanding orders during retailer lead time, we analyze the order quantity distribution of each item in their joint order. After that, by decomposing the multi-item joint replenishment problem to multiple single item inventory models, we derive the expression of the retailer cost analytically. At last, we give some suggestions for future research.

Abstract:The location-inventory distribution system design problem involving one supplier,candidate distribution centers and multiple retailers under stochastic demand is studied in this paper.Retailers adopt periodic re- view (R,s,Q)inventory policy,while distribution centers adopt continuous review (s,S)inventory policy.Considering the trade-off between inventory cost,shipping cost and facility location cost,the integrated 2-echelon inventory cost func- tion with incapacitated facility location model is presented.A Lagrangian relaxation solution algorithm for realistic scale problem is then proposed.A number of heuristics are also outlined for solving effectively sub-problems.The sub-gradient method is thus improved.Furthermore,simulations are given to confirm the correctness of the model and the effectiveness of the solution.In comparison with traditional approaches,we discussed the sensitivity of potential cost reduction to the changes of inventory control key parameters such as demand variance,holding cost,lead-time and service level.

Abstract:We consider a generalized joint optimization policy of block replacement & periodic review spare inventory with random lead time. According to the relationship between geometric area in the graph of inventory level over time, and holding or shortage costs, a model analyzing four mutually exclusive & exhaustive possibilities is developed for the expected average cost per unit time, and is based on the stochastic behavior of the assumed system. The model reflects the cost of inventory holding, spare shortage, replacement, and ordering. And for the first time known to the authors, we deliver the sufficient and necessary conditions of the existence and uniqueness of the minimum in the joint models of this type. Because the model and its analysis are general, one existing result is shown to be subsumed by this model with some modifications. Some numerical cases verify the deduction, and give a general searching solution procedure. Finally, we introduce some discussions related to the models. The models mentioned in the paper can be readily applied in many fields such as economical fields, financial engineering, armament administration, and even medical fields, with some modifications. And the mathematical deduction in the paper will be a guideline for analyzing related stochastic models.

Abstract:As a practical inventory and transportation problem, it is important to synthesize several objectives for the joint replenishment and delivery (JRD) decision. In this paper, a new multiobjective stochastic JRD (MSJRD) of the one-warehouse and n-retailer systems considering the balance of service level and total cost simultaneously is proposed. The goal of this problem is to decide the reasonable replenishment interval, safety stock factor, and traveling routing. Secondly, two approaches are designed to handle this complex multi-objective optimization problem. Linear programming (LP) approach converts the multi-objective to single objective, while a multi-objective evolution algorithm (MOEA) solves a multi-objective problem directly. Thirdly, three intelligent optimization algorithms, differential evolution algorithm (DE), hybrid DE (HDE), and genetic algorithm (GA), are utilized in LP-based and MOEA-based approaches. Results of the MSJRD with LP-based and MOEA-based approaches are compared by a contrastive numerical example. To analyses the nondominated solution of MOEA, a metric is also used to measure the distribution of the last generation solution. Results show that HDE outperforms DE and GA whenever LP or MOEA is adopted.

Abstract:This paper addresses the two-stocking locations single item non-stationary stochastic lot-sizing problem. The inventory level at each location is reviewed periodically. Items can be reordered and received from a common central warehouse and can also be transshipped laterally from the other location. Lateral transshipment is assumed to be proactive to re-distribute the stock between two stocking locations. Therefore, the order of action in each period is: transshipping (if necessary), reordering (if necessary) and satisfying the demand at each location and each installation. The costs are imposed on transshipping, ordering, holding, and back-ordering. The key issue in such systems is to determine the quantity of the lateral transshipment between depots and the order quantities from the warehouse to both locations. We formulate the problem via stochastic dynamic programming to minimise the expected total cost. Since the number of actions increases exponentially as the feasible quantities of transshipment and replenishment grow, we develop two-stage dynamic programming to improve the computation efficiency. A near-optimal policy against this two-stage formulation is introduced based on a mixed integer linear programming and receding-horizon approach. numerical experiments are implemented to demonstrate the performance of the two-stage model and the heuristic algorithm

Abstract:This paper considers a general inventory control problem with nonstationary stochastic demand and service level constraint. By analyze the inventory relationship between the decision making periods, a new inventory model is established, which regressively estimate the inventory cost from the last replenishment period to the first. Then a solution algorithm is provided, and the optimal solution has the nonstationary (s, S) form. Comparison with existing method illustrates the optimality of the proposed method.

Abstract:This research investigates the replenishment and transshipment decisions in a two-retailer inventory system with a single selling season. Both emergency lateral transshipment (ELT) and preventive lateral transshipment (PLT) are investigated. ELT satisfies partial backordering. We prove the existence of unique Nash equilibrium for the system under each policy. The results show that the ELT solution is independent of the transshipment price while the PLT solution converges to the newsvendor solution as the transshipment price increases. Numerical analysis is presented to illustrate the advantage of each policy. This study assists retailers in deciding which transshipment policy should be preferred.

Abstract:This paper investigates a supply network design problem for cross-border e-commerce. The supply chain consists of suppliers, regional distribution centers, and distribution centers. Our goal is to determine simultaneously location decisions of regional distribution centers, and the inventory decisions for coordinated replenishment and delivery. We formulate this problem as a mixed-integer non-linear program, and develop a Lipschitz optimization algorithm and an iterative heuristic to solve it. Moreover, we propose a tight lower bound via constructing a dual problem. Computational results show that both the Lipschitz optimization method and the heuristic can produce a near-optimal solution with a gap below 1%. Finally, we analyze the influence of integrated decision making and capacity constraints. An interesting finding is that the capacity of regional distribution centers has a critical influence, while the capacity of distribution centers is trivial. Integrated decision making can achieve remarkable cost savings only if the capacity constraints of regional distribution centers are loose. Nevertheless, capacity constraints of distribution centers make almost no impact. This result can be a good guide for a company’s investment plan: one should give top priority to regional distribution centers, and give only low priority to distribution centers.

Through analyzing the inventory relationship between consecutive periods, a stochastic dynamic programming model is established, then an optimal solution algorithm is developed, and the solution has the nonstationary (s, S) form. By simulation the performances of the proposed policy and current methods are computed, and the effectiveness of this policy is verified. Then this policy is applied to a real cases study, and application results are given.

Abstract:We study an inventory system that replenishes its stock through two shipping services, of which the non-committed shipping service can only ship up to a random capacity that is not known until shipment. By transforming the non-convex optimization in the dynamic program to a convex optimization problem, we show that the optimal policy for each period is determined by a quota for the non-committed shipping and a base-stock level for the committed shipping.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a joint optimization problem of replenishment and pricing for a periodic-review inventory system with random supply capacity. When making replenishment and pricing decisions at the beginning of each period, the firm only knows the supplier’s available capacity in the current period, but does not know what will be the available capacity in future periods. The salient feature of our model is that the random supply capacities for different periods are dependent. Several stochastic dependency structures are considered for the supply capacity sequence, including the one-lag and the multi-lag dependency.
