Abstract:A high sensitivity fiber-optic torsion sensor, which can measure twist rate and determine twist direction simultaneously based on a novel ultra-long-period fiber grating (ULPFG) with a period of up to several millimeters, is proposed and demonstrated. Such an ULPFG is fabricated by using the high-frequency CO2 Laser pulses exposure technique. The unique torsion characteristics of the ULPFG are simply analyzed by using the mode coupling theory and the birefringence effect. The experimental results show that the high order resonant wavelengths of the ULPFG have higher torsion sensitivities, which is several times higher than that of the normal LPFG. In addition, an intensity-type demodulation approach used to realize real-time torsion measurement is proposed and demonstrated based on the edge filtering effect of the ULPFG.

Abstract:A twist sensor based on a few-mode long period grating (LPG) and a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The LPG, inscribed in a step index few-mode fiber by a CO2 laser, is utilized to excite the LP11 core mode. The followed TFBG written in graded index a few mode fiber with the LP11 core mode as exciting light is served as sensing element. By analyzing transmitted intensity difference of two dips in transmission spectrum of the TFBG induced by the mode couplings from forward-propagating LP11 core mode to backward-propagating LP11 and LP21 core modes, a twist sensitivity of 1.074 dB/(rad/m) from -5.23 rad/m to 5.23 rad/m is achieved. The proposed sensor has advantages of easy operation and simple structure.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a compact optical fiber sensor that aims to measure the torsion in both amount and direction with high sensitivity. This sensor is configured by a triangular-prism-shaped long-period fiber grating, which is fabricated by the high frequency CO 2 laser polished method. The unique design of the triangular-shaped structure breaks the rotational symmetry of the optical fiber and provides high sensitivity for torsion measurement. In preliminary experiments, the torsion response of the sensor achieves a good stability and linearity. The torsion sensitivity is 0.54 nm/(rad/m), which renders the proposed structure a highly sensitive torsion sensor.

Abstract:We demonstrated a periodical helix-style long period fiber grating (HS-LPFG) based torsion sensor with both high sensitivity and the ability to discriminate torsion direction. The proposed structure has asymmetric refractive index modulation in radial and azimuthal directions, which leads to the HS-LPFG being highly sensitive to torsional sensing. Experimental results show that torsion sensitivity is obtained up to 1.65 nm/(rad/m) in the measuring range of -17.952 rad/m to 17.952 rad/m, which is about fifty times higher than that of the conventional LPFG induced by CO2 laser. Moreover, the structure has low crosstalk of 0.037 rad/m/°C and a compact length of 5 mm.

Abstract:In this article, a torsion sensor with tunable sensitivity based on long-period fiber grating (LPFG) written in polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) is proposed. The LPFG is fabricated by polishing periodic complementary grooves on the principal axis of stress of PMF. By modulating with the CO2 laser, the structural stability of the principal axis of stress is destroyed, which reduces the birefringence effect of the PMF itself. Meanwhile, the elliptical birefringence effect during the torsion is enhanced. Therefore, the torsion sensitivity of the PMF sensor is improved. The experimental results show that the torsion sensitivity can reach 0.81 nm/(rad/m) in the range of −5.70 to 5.70 nm/rad in the slow axis direction. The torsion sensitivity is 0.43 nm/(rad/m) in the large measurement range from −11.40 to 11.40 rad/m in the fast axis direction. Depending on the polarization condition of the incident light, the designed sensor can choose different sensitivities and measurement ranges.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a fiber ring laser for high-resolution torsion measurement, where the laser cavity has a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by a pair of longperiod fiber gratings written in a twisted single-mode fiber by a CO2 laser. The emitting wavelength of the laser provides a measure of the torsion rate applied to the grating pair, while the direction of the wavelength shift indicates the direction of the applied torsion. The narrow linewidth and the large side-mode suppression ratio of the laser can provide a much more precise measurement of torsion compared with the passive fiber-optic torsion sensors. The achieved torsion sensitivity is 0, 084 nm/（rad/m） in the torsion range of -± 100 rad/m, which corresponds to a torsion resolution of 0. 12 rad/m, for the wavelength resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer used in our experiments is -10 pm.

Abstract:With the alignment of the fiber core systems containing dual-CCDs and high-precision electric displacement platform, twisted long period fiber gratings (T-LPFGs) were fabricated in two different twisted SMF-28 fibers by femtosecond laser. The torsion characteristics of the T-LPFGs were experimentally and theoretical investigated and demonstrated in this study. The achieved torsion sensitivity is 117.4pm/(rad/m) in the torsion range −105–0rad/m with a linearity of 0.9995. Experimental results show that compared with the ordinary long period fiber gratings, the resonance wavelength of the gratings presents an opposite symmetrical shift depending on the twisting direction after the applied torsion is removed. In addition, high sensitivity could be obtained, which is very suitable for the applications in the torsion sensor. These results are important for the design of new torsion sensors based on T-LPFGs fabricated by femtosecond laser.

Abstract:We reported a highly sensitive twist sensor based on a novel helical long period grating (HLPG), which was written in the core region of a single-mode fiber (SMF) by a femtosecond (fs) laser. Due to the helical refractive index (RI) modulation with a small period ( ), the transmission spectrum exhibits multiple resonant dips, which are due to the resonant coupling between the fundamental core mode and multiple high-order cladding modes, respectively. When grating suffers from torsion, the polarization state of the incident light and the inherent structure of the HLPG will change, leading to variations in the intensity of the dips with the twist angle. Since the selected dips of the optimized sample have distinct intensity response to the twist, the grating can achieve enhanced twist sensitivities of 18.93 dB/rad in the clockwise (CW) direction from 0° to 48° and −20.54 dB/rad in the counterclockwise (CCW) direction from 0° to -48° by the differential intensity demodulation method. Furthermore, the machine learning method (MLM) has been exploited to analyze more resonant dips that have discrepant responses to the twist angle, enabling the enlargement of the sensing range and the discrimination of the twist direction. Featured with high torsion sensitivity, high resolution ( ), compact size, ease of fabrication, polarization-dependent twist response, and twist direction discrimination ability, the proposed structure has potentials from soft robotics to artificial textiles.

Abstract:A segmented long period fiber grating (LPFG)-based torsion sensor with both high sensitivity and ability to discriminate torsion direction is proposed and experimentally investigated. The sensor is made up of three spatial orthogonal short LPFGs by using a CO2 laser notched method. Experimental results show that the torsion sensitivities can reach -0.54 and 0.33 dB/(rad/m) in dip depth and 0.30 and -0.14 nm/(rad/m) in resonance wavelength for clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively, in a single polarization state. Torsion rate and torsion direction can be measured simultaneously by the sensor. Moreover, the temperature sensitivity of the sensor has been determined as 0.067 nm/°C. Therefore, the proposed segmented-LPFG would have great potential applications in engineering and fiber sensors.

Abstract:We utilized a CO2 laser to carve long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) on polarization-maintaining fibers (PMFs) along the fast and slow axes. Based on the spectra of LPFGs written along two different directions, we found that when LPFG was written along the fast axis, the spectrum had lower insertion loss and fewer side lobes. We investigated the temperature and twist characteristics of the embedded structure of the LPFG and Sagnac loop and ultimately obtained a temperature sensitivity of −0.295 nm/°C and a twist sensitivity of 0.87 nm/(rad/m) for the LPFG. Compared to the single LPFG, the embedded structure of the LPFG and Sagnac loop demonstrates a significant improvement in temperature and twist sensitivities. Additionally, it also possesses the capability to discern the direction of the twist. The embedded structure displays numerous advantages, including easy fabrication, low cost, good robustness, a wide range, and high sensitivity. These features make it highly suitable for applications in structural health monitoring and other related fields.

Abstract:The response of ultrashort-length CO 2 -induced long-period fiber grating (LPFG) sensors to torsion is reported. While engraving using CO 2 laser radiation, the fiber is submitted to high tension allowing the obtainment of gratings with shorter lengths, down to 2.4 mm, which is almost one order of magnitude lower than the usual. Also, the fiber is only irradiated in one side, creating an asymmetrical profile leading to highly birefringent gratings. Sensitivity to axial twists is demonstrated, with values up to 0.15 nm/(rad/m) for the resonant wavelength shift and higher than 0.03 dBm/(rad/m) for the variation in the intensity (attenuation). Discrimination between rotation directions, clockwise and counterclockwise, was observed.

Abstract:We present a highly sensitive strain sensor based on the use of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) with rotary grooves carved by high-frequency CO 2 -laser pulses. We observe that, when the rotation rate of the grooves is sufficiently large, the resonance peak of the grating splits into two with a wavelength separation that changes sensitively with the strain applied along the grating and remains practically constant with a change in the ambient temperature. By measuring the wavelength separation of the two resonance peaks, we obtain a strain sensitivity of ~0.1067 plusmn 0.0075 nm/ mu epsiv without any temperature compensation, which is larger than that of a conventional LPFG by almost two orders of magnitude.

Low Refractive-Index and Temperature Sensitive Torsion Sensor Based on Cascaded Long-Period Fiber Gratings Inscribed in a Four-Mode Fiber

Abstract:Torsion sensing is a promising technique in a variety of different scientific and industrial applications. In this paper, we present a novel torsion sensor based on the cascaded long-period fiber grating inscribed in a four-mode fiber (CLPFG-FMF). The change in rotatory vector makes resonant wavelength shift, for the twisted CLPFG-FMF. The key factor, which severely impacts on the properties and performance of torsion sensor, is also investigated and discussed. Experimental results show that the resonant wavelength linearly shifts with the torsion rate and the cascaded angle plays an important role in enhancing torsion sensitivity. The proposed torsion sensor achieves optimal sensitivities of -0.519 nm/(rad/m) in counterclockwise and 0.501 nm/(rad/m) in clockwise. The repeatability and stability of the CLPFG-FMF with cascaded angle of 0° are studied as well. The refractive index sensitivity of the CLPFG-FMF with cascaded angle of 0° is -5.20 nm/RIU from 1.3431 to 1.4374 refractive index ranges and the temperature sensitivity is -0.0173 nm/°C from 25 °C to 90 °C. The high sensitivity of torsion sensing is expected to be useful for broad applications across engineering fields.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel core-deformed long period fiber grating (CD-LPFG) for torsion measurement is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This sensor is prepared by the CO2 laser polishing method and filament heating method. The deformed core of the structure is achieved by tapering on a dual-side polished single mode fiber (SMF), which enhances the torsion sensitivity. Experimental results show that the torsion sensitivity of the CD-LPFG reaches 0.314 nm/rad $\cdot \text{m}$ −1 in the dynamic range of $-12.32 {\mathrm {rad}}\cdot \text{m}$ −1 to 12.32 rad $\cdot \text{m}$ −1. In addition, comparative torsion measuring experiments of CD-LPFGs with the different polishing thickness were carried out, showing that the tapered LPFG fabricated on a thinner polished fiber has a higher torsion sensitivity. Furthermore, the temperature response of the structure is 66 pm/°C, which indicates a relatively low temperature-torsion crosstalk of 0.208 rad $\cdot \text{m}$ −1/°C.

Abstract:Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical fiber torsion sensor with twist direction discrimination capability by incorporating a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) inscribed on polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PMPCF) by CO2 laser pulses. An LPFG formed on PMPCF has an input-polarization-dependent resonance dip, and two separated resonance dips, designated as the shorter wavelength-dip (SWD) and longer wavelength-dip (LWD), are obtained with respect to orthogonal input polarization. The torsion response of the sensor head was investigated in a wide twist angle range of –220° to 220° for the two resonance dips. Highly linear torsion responses of the SWD and LWD could be obtained with adjusted R2 values of ∼0.9960 and ∼0.9967, respectively, in a twist angle range from –160° to 160°, when their transmittance levels measured in a logarithmic scale were converted into a linear scale. The torsion sensitivities of the SWD and LWD were measured as –5.067 and 4.830%/rad in this twist angle range of high linearity, respectively. In particular, its temperature response was also examined in a temperature range from 35 to 85° C. With pre-torsion applied to the sensor head at twist angles of 220° and –220°, the temperature sensitivities of the SWD and LWD were measured as ∼3.64 and ∼9.75 pm/°C in terms of the dip wavelength and –2.87x10-3 and 5.45x10-5 dB/°C in terms of the dip transmittance, respectively. The experimental results corroborate that our sensor can perform virtually temperature-insensitive torsion measurement with twist direction discrimination capability and good linearity in a wide measurement range.

Abstract:A chiral long-period grating (CLPG) was fabricated successfully by scanning CO2 laser in a twisted conventional single-mode fiber. The strong mode coupling can be achieved in a short grating length. The sensing characteristics of the CLPGs were investigated experimentally. Compared with the conventional long-period fiber gratings, the CLPGs were found to have the similar temperature and refractive index sensitivities and much higher torsion, bending, and strain sensitivities. The high sensitivity of the CLPG can be attributed to the screw-type waveguide structure induced by the scanning laser in the twisted fiber. The proposed CLPGs could have great potential applications as filters and optical sensors.

Abstract:A novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG), fabricated by periodically cascading a series of screw-type distortions, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. These screw-type distortions are induced by twisting the fiber during CO2 laser beam exposure. The resulting LPFG will either be left- or right-hand helical, depending on the twist rate and direction used during fabrication, with a certain frozen shear strain. Due to the independence between grating pitch and twist rate, this type of LPFG could be more flexible than the helical- or chiral-fiber gratings reported previously. During LPFG twisting, the device displays good directional dependence and an enhanced torsion sensitivity of 0.1604 nm/(rad/m), which implies the structure could be an excellent candidate for torsion sensors.
