Abstract:We demonstrate both the amplitude and bi-phase modulation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses using silicon microring modulator. The integrated silicon ring modulator generates the monocycle pulse train and modulates it simultaneously. By applying different driving voltages, the amplitude and phase-modulated UWB signal with a data rate of 2.5 Gb/s are achieved. The ring modulator can be thermally tuned for a free spectral range with a similar to 50-mW power consumption.

Abstract:Photonic generation of ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses is experimentally demonstrated using a cascaded electroabsorption modulator (EAM) and semiconductor optical amplifier by exploiting a combination of cross-absorption modulation and cross-gain modulation. The polarities and shapes of UWB monocycle and doublet pulses can be simply controlled using an optical time-delay controller and the reverse voltage applied to the EAM. The corresponding measured rf spectra meet the UWB criteria.

Abstract:An approach to generate ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, based on a dual-output intensity modulator and tunable optical time delay. Positive and negative pulses are obtained from two output ports of the modulator, respectively, and are coupled together through different time delays. The generated monocycle pulse has a 10-dB bandwidth of 6.5 GHz and a central frequency of 3.7 GHz.

Abstract:Phase-coded radio frequency (RF) pulses are widely adopted for radar systems as an effective signal format to enable high-range resolution. However, generating such signals conventionally requires high-speed electronics and complex RF circuitry that impose burdens on the system cost and power consumption. In particular, modern radar systems desire features such as high frequencies, e.g., in the millimeter-wave region, high compactness, and high system flexibility, which pose great challenges for the conventional all-electronics solutions. In contrast, integrated microwave photonics opens a way to solutions that are able to provide those features simultaneously, together with potential for full integration and low cost fabrication. Here, we present an integrated microwave photonic method of a binary-phase-coded millimeter-wave signal generation. The core device is a silicon microring modulator with a device size of 0.13 mm×0.32 mm and a modulation bandwidth of 23 GHz. Using RF seed frequencies of 17.5 GHz and 20 GHz, respectively, we experimentally demonstrated the generation of binary-phase-coded signals at 35 GHz and 40 GHz using our proposed approach, the performance of which was verified by a pulse compression ratio of 94 and 106, respectively. The result of this work points to the realization of a chip-scale flexible millimeter-wave signal generator.

Abstract:A photonic ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse generator based on relaxation oscillations of a semiconductor laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. We numerically simulate the modulation response of a direct modulation laser (DML) and show that due to the relaxation oscillations of the laser, the generated signals with complex shape in time domain match the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask in the frequency domain. Experimental results using a DML agree well with simulation predictions. Furthermore, we also experimentally demonstrate the generation of FCC compliant UWB signals by externally injecting a distributed feedback (DFB) laser.

Abstract:We report an integrated method for generating ultra-wideband (UWB) monocycle and doublet pulses based on a reconfigurable silicon microring-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer (RC-MZI). When tuned to proper operating conditions, the device can produce Fano resonances with an extinction ratio of more than 20 dB. UWB monocycle and doublet signals with nanosecond pulse widths are produced when the microring resonator is modulated by square and Gaussian electrical pulses.

Abstract:A novel composite approach to generate UltraWidcBand (UWB) monocytic and doublet pulses in optical domain is proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Simple electrical Gaussian pulse is modulated on optical earlier to generate UWB monocycle and doublet pulse successively. The UWB monocytic pulse is first generated based on birefringence time delay in polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF). Two polarity-reverse pulses are generated by polarization modulation using a single phase modulator and delayed in PMF with proper time to generate monocycle pulse. Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is placed after the monocytic pulse generation to modify the optical pulse profile. Thanks to the gain saturation and recovery in SOA, the doublet shape pulse can be obtained. The fractional bandwidths of monocycle and doublet pulses arc 140% and 160% respectively, which can meet the UWB requirements.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to generate ultrawideband (UWB) monocycle pulses based on cross-phase modulation (XPM) of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The proposed system consists of a SOA and an optical bandpass filter (OBF). Due to the XPM, a continuous wave (CW) probe signal is phase modulated by another optical Gauss pulse in the SOA. The OBF will convert the phase modulation to intensity modulation. A pair of polarity-reversed UWB monocycle pulses is achieved by locating the probe carrier at the positive and negative linear slopes of the OBF. Both cases conform to the UWB definition of the Federal Communications Commission.

Abstract:A novel all-optical method for ultra-wideband (UWB) monocycle pulses generation based on cross polarization modulation (CPM) effect in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber is proposed and demonstrated.Due to the CPM effect between the probe light and the pump pulse,a pair of polarity-reversed Gaussian pulses is produced.After proper differential delay,an UWB monocycle pulse with 84-ps width and the fractional bandwidth of 153% is generated after photodetection.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic generation scheme for multiband ultrawideband (MB-UWB) signal by employing a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). In this scheme, four electrical binary pulse streams with different bit rates are combined to drive one radio frequency (RF) port of the DDMZM, while the other RF port is modulated by the sum of their 1-b delayed duplicates. By properly adjusting the bit rate and the amplitude of each pulse stream, as well as the bias voltage of the DDMZM, an MB-UWB signal with four sub-bands can be obtained and the transmission capacity can be quadrupled. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified by a system demonstration, where the signal modulated by amplitude-phase-shift-key format reaches a high bit rate of 2 Gb/s.

Abstract:A novel method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) signals based on two differential group delay modules and one Mach-Zehnder Modulator is proposed. Both simulation and experiments verified that the method could generate two kinds of UWB monocycles using low bit-rate non-return-to-zero data source (1Gbps). The monocycles have a fractional bandwidth of 127% at centre frequency 5.5GHz.

Abstract:A novel scheme for ultra-wideband (UWB) monocycle pulse generation is proposed based on a dual-output push-pull Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM).The MZM is driven by a non-return-to-zero (NRZ) data sequence and biased at the nonlinear point to generate edge-triggered pulses.To combine the complementary pulses forming a monocycle UWB pulse, two schemes are used to implement incoherent summation structure.A proof-of-concept experiment of UWB-over-fiber down-link system is set up.Further, by using digital signal processing (DSP) to calculate the bit error rate (BER), the transmission performance of two system configurations is studied.

Abstract:Ultra-wide band signal generation using a silicon microring resonator tuned to an NRZ-DPSK modulated optical carrier is proposed and demonstrated. The scheme is shown to enable the generation of UWB signals with switchable polarity and tunable bandwidth by simply tuning the coupling regions of the microring resonator. Monocycle pulses with both negative and positive polarities are successfully synthesized experimentally.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported an integrated method to generate ultra-wideband (UWB) pulses of different orders based on a reconfigurable silicon micro-ring resonator-coupled Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Under proper operating conditions, the device can produce Fano resonances with a peak-to-valley extinction ratio of above 20 dB. UWB monocycle and doublet signals with picosecond pulse widths are produced when the microring resonator is modulated by square and Gaussian electrical pulses, respectively. With our Fano resonance modulator on silicon photonics, it is promising to foresee versatile on-chip microwave signal generation.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a method to generate a low-chirp ultra-wideband pulse (UWB) signal based on a silicon single-drive push-pull segmented Mach-Zehnder modulator (SMZM). The concept is analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. We get positive monocycle pulses with different relative time delays between the two driving signals. The center frequency and fractional bandwidth of the generated positive monocycle pulse is 5.97 GHz and 161% with a relative time delay of 56 ps. By changing the operating point of the SMZM, we can get negative monocycle pulses. We modulate the UWB signals with on-off keying and pulse position formats by properly coding the driving signal. As far as we know, this is the first time to realize low-chirp UWB signals using only one silicon modulator. The successful generation of UWB signals poses a significant step in realizing a compact low-cost and low-chirp UWB generator on the silicon photonics platform.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a reconfigurable ultrawideband (UWB) pulse generation scheme by using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). In the proposed method, two phase modulators of the DDMZM are respectively driven by properly designed electrical signals. By carefully setting the parameters of the two electrical signals and the bias voltage of the DDMZM, different UWB pulses can be achieved at the interference output of the DDMZM. A proof-of-concept experiment verifies the feasibility of the proposed method. Photonic generations of UWB monocycle, doublet, triplet, and quintuple pulses have been successfully demonstrated, with central frequencies of 4.69, 4.69, 5.47, and 6.25 GHz and fractional bandwidths of 150%, 133%, 186%, and 75%, respectively.
