Abstract:We demonstrate a high-repetition-rate, high-peak-power diode-pumped passively Q-switched ceramic Nd:YAG quasi-three-level laser at 946 nm. The maximum peak power reaches 12.4 kW with a pulse width of 13.0 ns at 3.3 kHz.

Abstract:Passively Q-switched green output with Cr 4+ :YAG as saturable absorber and PPMgLN as the frequency doubling crystal was realized in a compact diode end-pumped Nd:YVO 4 laser. The green light output power, pulse width, pulse repetition rate, pulse energy and peak power with three Cr 4+ :YAG of different initial transmissions were investigated. The maximum average output power was 1.2 W at the pump power of 4.0 W and the maximum conversion efficiency was 30% with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 90% initial transmission. The maximum pulse energy and minimum pulse width were 10.9 μJ and 12 ns with the Cr 4+ :YAG of 75% initial transmission.

Abstract:A compact diode-pumped passively Q-switched laser has been demonstrated with a coated Cr/sup 4+/:YAG crystal as both a saturable absorber and an output coupler. When CW pumped with a fibre coupled laser diode, the laser produces pulses of 5-30 ns duration, with a repetition rate of 75-90 kHz. The highest peak power was 430 W, obtained at 1.6 W of pump power, which is a 520 times enhancement in comparison to an output power of 830 mW under CW operation.

Abstract:We report on a diode end-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG ceramic laser. By using a Cr4+:YAG single crystal with an 80% initial transmission as the saturable absorber, stable Q-switched pulses with a 126-μJ pulse energy, a 12-ns pulse width, and an 8.4-kHz pulse repetition rate have been obtained. The Q-switching performance of the laser under different saturable absorption strengths and output couplings was experimentally investigated.

Abstract:A novel scheme was developed for a diode-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YVO4/KGW Raman laser at 589 nm with a diode-to-orange conversion efficiency reaching 11.4%. The compact near-concentric cavity was designed to achieve the criterion of good passive Q-switching and to contain a coupled resonator for intracavity stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and second harmonic generation (SHG). The dependence of the output performance on the initial transmission of the saturable absorber was explored in detail. Furthermore, the output performance was studied by considering the influence of the pump-to-mode size ratio. By using an initial transmission of 50%, the highest pulse energy and peak power were 110 μJ and 118 kW, respectively, at a pump duration of 40 μs and a pump frequency of 10 kHz.

Abstract:A neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) ceramic laser operating at 1356 nm was first demonstrated experimentally. Multiple wavelength oscillation was observed under the conventional continuous-wave operation, while with the insertion of a Q-switcher that increases the loss for wavelengths longer than 1400 nm, single wavelength oscillation at 1356 nm was achieved both for continuous-wave and Q-switched operations. At the pump power of 11.8 W, a 3.01 W continuous-wave 1356 nm laser with a slope efficiency of 31.9% was obtained. The peak power up to 9.23 kW with a pulse width of 39 ns was achieved at a pulse repetition frequency of 5 kHz.

Abstract:We design and demonstrate a thermally stable four-mirror discrete-component planar ring cavity for Q-switched laser output. An 880 nm fiber-coupled laser diode is used to pump a-cut Nd:YVO4 directly. A magnetic rotation glass (MR3-2) inserted into a permanent cylinder magnet, in combination with a half-wave plate and the polarized emission properties of Nd: YVO4, is used to obtain unidirectional laser operation. With this setup, for a pump power of 5 W, 2.75 W of continuous 1064 nm single-frequency laser output is obtained. Next, a Cr:YAG with small signal transmittance of 75% is inserted in between the two concave mirrors where the beam waist is located. Consequently, a passive Q-switching single-frequency linear polarization pulse with an average power of 1.02 W, pulse width of 60 ns, frequency of 21 kHz, peak power of 810 W, and single-pulse energy of 48 mu J is obtained. Further, we also propose a new method of using a Fabry-Perot (FP) scanning interferometer to observe high-repetition rate Q-switched pulse output longitudinal-mode signals. Abstract:Efficient passively Q-switched Er:Y2O3 ceramic lasers operating at 2.7 mu m were demonstrated. Using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) of 2.4% modulation depth, we achieved 63 ns pulses that are close to the limit set by the cavity length. For 9.5 W of the absorbed pump power, an average output power of 0.88 W was generated with a pulse energy of 17.4 mu J and a pulse duration of 63 ns, resulting a pulse peak power of 0.27 kW. By using an SESAM with a lager modulation depth, shorter pulses of 29 ns were generated. To our knowledge, this is the first report of sub-100 ns pulses from the continuously pumped similar to 3-mu m passively Q-switched lasers. The prospects for further pulse shortening are considered, and these results may give a further insight into 3-mu m passively Q-switched laser systems.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of the optical characteristic of Nd∶YAG ceramic, a laser diode (LD) pumped high-efficiency high-repetition-rate acousto-optic (A-O) Q-switched miniature Nd∶YAG ceramic laser was developed. Near infrared laser at 1064 nm was obtained with LD end-pumping Nd∶YAG ceramic. Fused silica was adopted as A-O Q-switch crystal and the Q-switch repetition rate is adjustable from 1 Hz to 115 kHz. With a 2W LD pumping, stable operation with pulse width of 16.4 ns peak power of 2.46 kW and energy per pulse of 40.5 μJ, was achieved. At 110 kHz repetition rate, 495 mW average output power of 1064 nm was obtained, corresponding to total optical-to-optical conversion efficiency being as high as 24.75%. The experimental study about the influence of repetition rate and pumping power on the performance of A-O Q-switched pulse laser was emphasized, and the experiment results were analyzed and discussed.

Abstract:A kind of electro-optic Q-switched laser in the form of pulse group output with short pulse interval and high subpulse peak power is proposed. The Nd: YAG crystal is pumped by the diode laser (LD) module, and the single energy storage of resonant cavity is achieved. On the basis of controlling the Q-switch steps open repeatedly, single pump energy can be divided into multiple times Q-switched outputs and the short pulse interval and pulse group laser output are obtained, providing a research way for high repetition frequency and high peak power laser. Results show that with a group of half ring laser diode module as the source for Nd: YAG crystal, lithium niobate (LN) crystal as the Q-switch, storage material is single pumped by laser diode module, and the Q-switch is stepped opened, the laser can be stably operation in the range of 1-20 Hz, minimum subpulse interval of 100 ns is obtained and subpulse frequency ranges in 1.1-10.0 MHz, subpulse energy is greater than 23 mJ and energy fluctuation is less than 10%, single pulse width is less than 37 ns, subpulse peak power is close to 1 MW, and the optical-optical conversion efficiency is 22.5%.

Abstract:A diode-end-pumped Nd:YAG laser is Q-switched by using Cr4+:YAG as saturable absorber. When CW pumped with a laser diode which the maximum power is 550 mW, the laser produces pulses of 24 ns duration at 1064 nm, with an energy of 26 μJ. No forced cooling of the wafer is required even for several hours of operation. It has advantages of simplicity, high efficiency and long stability.

Abstract:Using a low non-saturable loss Bragg-reflector-based semiconductor saturable mirror, a passively Q-switched Er:Lu2O3 ceramic laser at 2.7 μm demonstrated short pulse-width and efficient operation, generating stable pulses of 70 ns pulse-width and ~71 kHz repetition rates. Over 692 mW of average output power was measured, corresponding to a pulse energy of ~9.8 μJ. In a modified resonator design of reduced round-trip time, pulses of 32 ns duration were generated. The achieved results suggest that Er:Lu2O3 ceramic could be a promising gain medium for efficient and high power pulsed laser generation at 2.7 μm. The prospects for further improvement in laser performance at this wavelength are discussed.

Abstract:This paper reports results of study on self-Q-switched Cr 4+ , Nd 3+ : YAG microchip lasers at 1.064 μm using a quasi-monolithic setup. Pulses with 6 to 60 ns wide (FWHM) and TEM00 mode produced under cw pumping with repetition rates ranging from 1.5 kHz to 23 kHz. Pulsed pumping yielded output pulses with repetition rates from 1Hz to several kHz and excellent pulse stability. A pulsed pumped microchip oscillator and flash lamp pumped amplifiers were used to set up a MOPA (Master Oscillator and Power Amplifier) system generating 225 kW pulses with 8 ns width.

Abstract:A laser diode dual-end-pumped injection-seeded single-frequency Q-switched double-pulse Nd:YAG laser is designed using a modified ramp-fire technique. The laser is capable of producing a pair of Q-switched single-frequency 1064 nm laser pulses in one pump period. Every pulse has an output energy of up to 10 mJ, width of nearly 20 ns, and interval of about 200 μs between two Q-switched pulses. The optical-to-optical efficiency of this laser is about 22.4% and its slope efficiency is 28%. A narrow spectrum linewidth of less than 28.6 MHz with a frequency of jitter around 1 MHz over 2 min may be obtained, and a beam quality of 1.23 in the horizontal direction and 1.31 in the vertical direction is detected.

Abstract:By using a new saturable absorber V3+:YAG, a flash-lamp-pumped passively Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1.32 μm has been realized. The single-pulse energy and the pulse width of the output laser versus the pump energy are measured. With a cavity length of 440 mm and a pump energy of 43.4 J, the obtained single-pulse output energy and pulse width are 10 mJ and 86.9 ns, respectively, corresponding to a peak power of 115 kW.

Abstract:A stable repetition rate continuously controllable passively Q-switched Nd:YAG bonded microchip laser is presented. A 0.8 mm-thickness 7 mm-diameter Nd:YAG crystal at 1.6 at.% is adapted as active medium and the saturable absorber for passively Q-switched pulse generating, a 0.2 mm-thickness 6.8-mm diameter Cr4+:YAG piece was thermal bonded into the Nd:YAG after primary optical contact. By using pulse pump and controlling the duty cycle of electric pulse and temperature of laser diode, a 1 W C-mount packaged fast-collimated laser diode, we can continuously achieve repetition rate from 1 kHz to 10 kHz as active Q-switched laser. The delay time at 10 kHz is 90 μs, while the single pulse energy is 2.8 μJ with pulse width of 2 ns.

Abstract:By use of a laser diode as a pump source, a self-Q-switched laser from a Cr,Nd:YAG crystal is demonstrated. The output Q–switched traces are very stable, the threshold pump power is 3.5 W, the pulse duration is 50 ns, and the slope efficiency is as high as 20%. In addition, the pulse width remains constant while the pulse repetition rate varies with pump power.

Abstract:Passively Q-switched Er:Yb:LuAl3(BO3)4 pulse microlasers were investigated at a low repetition frequency of 10-200 Hz. End-pumped by a 975.6 nm quasi-continuous-wave laser diode with pump pulse width of 0.5 ms and period of 10 ms, a stable 1522 nm pulse microlaser with single pulse energy of 48.3 μJ, duration of 1.9 ns, repetition frequency of 100 Hz, peak output power of 25.4 kW and beam quality factor less than 1.2 was realized at a pump beam waist diameter of 260 μm. This eye-safe passively Q-switched pulse microlaser with high peak output power and narrow duration can be used in the portable laser rangefinder.

Abstract:A quasi-continuous wave laser diode side-pumped passively Q-switched Yb:YAG slab laser with Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber has been demonstrated in order to understand the pulse properties of Yb:YAG crystal. To our knowledge the maximum 69% extraction efficiency is achieved by the system. 44μJ pulse energy and 1.64KW peak power with near diffraction-limited beam quality are presented at 25Hz repetition rate. The build-up time of the Q-giant in the passively Q-switched laser is shown.

Abstract:Q-switched pulses at 1.064 mum with a peak power of 5.02 kW and a pulse width of 2.8 ns were obtained which were pumped by a 1 W laser diode on the Nd:YVO4 microchip at the 1 kHz repetition rate. These values were achieved by combining the techniques of acousto-optic Q-switching and electro-optic pulse-transmission-mode Q-switching. The temporal characteristics of the pulses were analysed numerically. The experimental results are shown to be in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Abstract:A Q-switched intracavity frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser end-pumped by two polarization-coupled 1.5 W laser diodes was reported. The maximum peak power of 2.23 KW at 532 nm with the pulse width of 18 ns and the repetition rate of 1 KHz has been obtained. The highest repetition rate is 30 kHz, and the maximum average output power is 128 mW for the 532 nm laser at repetition rate of 15 kHz. The dynamic characteristics of LD pumped Q-switched intracavity doubled Nd:YAG laser were studied theoretically.
