Abstract:Differential equation based diffusion models are those most used models to forecast the penetration of a new product. Almost all products, however, diffuse in a social system with typical structural characteristics, which can't be flexibly reflected in these models. The objective of this paper is to forecast new product penetration using agent-based model (ABM) that generates a diffusion process in any network. The success in identifying the hidden influence network (HIN) underlying a diffusion process would help its forecast. Additionally, we propose a fast parameter estimation method for ABM when there are a great volume of fitting tasks. Based on this method, three discriminant indices are constructed, and their relationship with HIN is formulated with logistic model. The simulation result shows the effectiveness of these discriminative indices. The trained model performs well for most simulated data set, but poor in those generated by ABMs having similar network structure. Therefore, three methods based on ABMs, namely, predicted HIN, weighted and simple averaging, are proposed to forecast the growth of a new product. A data set consisting of 317 durable product penetration data is used to test our methods. The empirical result shows that most predicted HINs are similar to random regular network, while few is similar to lattice network or random network with a high variance of degree distribution. What's more, compared with four classical differential equation based diffusion models, i.e., Bass model, Gamma/Gompertz model, Gamma/Shifted Gompertz model and Weibull model, our methods performs better in both short-term and long-term prediction.
