Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle and the unified theory of polarization and coherence, the explicit expression of cross-spectral density matrix for partially coherent beams in far field is derived. Also, we investigate the polarization changes of beams travelling through anisotropic turbulence along the horizontal link when the source is isotropic and anisotropic in correlation. Simulation results show strong relevance between the polarization states of beams and the source correlation. The conditions for partially coherent beams to be less affected by turbulence are given.

Abstract:We give the closed-form solution of cross-spectral density matrix of a partially coherent beam propagating through the anisotropic atmosphere turbulence along the horizontal link, and investigate the effects of turbulence and source parameters on the polarization state of beams on propagation. The results show that we can improve the performance of wireless optical communication systems with polarization modulation and polarization multiplexing methods by decreasing wavelength or increasing source size. The characteristic that polarization state of beams is uniquely determined by anisotropic turbulence after a sufficiently long propagation distance is also verified.

Abstract:We study the change in the degree of coherence of partially coherent electromagnetic beam (so called electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam). It is shown analytically that with a fixed set of source parameters and under a particular atmospheric turbulence model, an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating through atmospheric turbulence reaches its maximum value of coherence after the beam propagates a particular distance, and the effective width of the spectral degree of coherence also has its maximum value. This phenomenon is independent of the used turbulence model. The results are illustrated by numerical curves.

Abstract:We report an investigation on turbulence-induced changes for overall polarization parameters of light beams, with different wavelength and under different Rytov indexes. Experimental results show strong correlations between state of polarization and turbulent strength, which is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We theoretically analyze and experimentally verify the performance of multiple polarization parameters in the presence of atmospheric turbulence for a terrestrial optical transmission. First, both the first- and second-moment characteristic of polarization parameters are derived based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle. Then, numerical simulations are presented for different propagating distances, optical source properties, and turbulent strengths. Finally, a series of well-designed experiments are carried out to verify the theory with turbulence-controlled conditions, where the polarization states are measured at two wavelengths, respectively. As a result, the theoretical predictions conform closely to the experimental data, and both show that with the increasing turbulent strength, the first-order moment of polarization parameters varies in different trends, while their second-order moment increases. The proposed approach is promising for building a comprehensive statistical model of polarization and improving the performance of a free-space optical communication link.

Abstract:It has been recntly shown that polarization state of propagation beam would suffer from polarization fluctuations due to the detrimental effects of atmospheric turbulence. This paper studies the performance of wireless optical communication (WOC) systems in the presence of polarization effect of atmosphere. We categorize the atmospheric polarization effect into polarization rotation, polarization-dependent power loss, and phase shift effect, with each effect described and modeled with the help of polarization–coherence theory and the extended Huygens–Fresnelprinciple. The channel matrices are derived to measure the cross-polarization interference of the system. Signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate for polarization multiplexing system and polarization modulation system are obtained to assess the viability using the approach of M turbulence model. Monte Carlo simulation results show the performance of polarization based WOC systems to be degraded by atmospheric polarization effect, which could be evaluated precisely using the proposed model with given turbulent strengths.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the effects of turbulent atmosphere on the degree of polarization of a partially coherent electromagnetic beam, which propagates through it. The beam is described by a 2⊗2 cross–spectral density matrix and is assumed to be generated by a planar, secondary, electromagnetic Gaussian Schell–model source. The analysis is based on a recently formulated unified theory of coherence and polarization and on the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle. We study the behaviour of the degree of polarization in the intermediate zone, i.e. in the region of space where coherence properties of the beam and the atmospheric turbulence are competing. We illustrate the analysis by numerical examples.

Abstract:In wireless optical communications (WOC), polarization multiplexing systems and coherent polarization systems have excellent performance and wide applications, while its state of polarization affected by atmospheric turbulence is not clearly understood. This paper focuses on the polarization fluctuations caused by atmospheric turbulence in a WOC link. Firstly, the relationship between the polarization fluctuations and the index of refraction structure parameter is introduced and the distribution of received polarization angle is obtained through theoretical derivations. Then, turbulent conditions are adjusted and measured elaborately in a wide range of scintillation indexes (SI). As a result, the root-mean-square (RMS) variation and probability distribution function (PDF) of polarization angle conforms closely to that of theoretical model. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, the transmission properties of the partially coherent radially polarized twisted (PCRPT) beam propagating in the turbulence atmosphere are investigated. The analytical formulas for the components of the cross-spectral density matrix for the PCRPT beam passing through the optical system in the turbulent atmosphere are developed using the Collins integral and aperture function. Research results indicate that modifying the variable parameters and dimensions of the optical system can control the near-field and far-field distributions of the beam, while providing a more flexible choice of receivers for the PCRPT beam in the receiving plane. By utilizing the Cassegrain reflector system and adjusting the optical system parameters, it is possible to achieve collimated transmission of the PCRPT beam and significantly enhance the beam transmission efficiency in turbulent atmospheric conditions. The derivation process and the research results presented in this paper can be expanded to analyze the application of optical systems to control high-dimensional beam field variations. The envisioned utilization of the results obtained from this research investigation pertains to the fields of beam shaping and optical communications.

Abstract:We investigate the polarization property of Gaussian-Schell model beams propagating in hypersonic turbulence. Results show that we can increase the wavelength to weaken the effects of hypersonic turbulence and improve the performance of communication systems.

Abstract:Based on the cross-spectral density function of transmission theory and the unified theory of coherence and polarization, the depolarization characteristics of incompletely polarized and partially coherent laser propagation in slant atmospheric turbulence are investigated. According to extended Huygens–Fresnel principle, the analytical expressions for intensity and degree of polarization in the slant path are derived. The effects of the wavelength, the initial spot size and the transmission distance on the intensity and degree of polarization are described. The results show that a more stable distribution of the degree of polarization at the receiver is obtained with increasing wavelength for a certain receiver height. The conclusions play an important role in optical communications and target recognition.

Abstract:The propagation of a radially polarized partially coherent beam through an optical system in turbulent atmosphere is investigated. Analytical propagation formulae for the radially polarized partially coherent beam through an optical system in turbulent atmosphere are derived, and some analyses are illustrated by numerical examples related to propagation properties of the radially polarized partially coherent beam through a double-lens system in turbulent atmosphere. It is shown that the optical system, structure constant of turbulent atmosphere and the initial coherent length have significant influence on intensity, degree of polarization and degree of coherence for radially polarized partially coherent beam.

Abstract:The degree of polarization of partially coherent Airy beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence is studied in this paper. Polarization fidelity of the beams is used to judge the propagation effect. It is shown that the degree of polarization of partially coherent Airy beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence tends to its initial value after it has propagated over a sufficient distance, and in free space the degree of polarization retains a certain value. The polarization distribution alone the symmetry axis is an Airy function if the propagation distance is not so long and evolves into a Gaussian-like profile when propagating at sufficient long distance in atmospheric turbulence. The polarization fidelity of the beams with larger waist width ω0 and larger coherence length σ0 is better. There is an exponential truncation factor which badly degrades the polarization fidelity. The results obtained in this paper are very useful for communication of Airy beams.

Abstract:This study explored the impact of atmospheric turbulence on partially coherent light propagation. Atmospheric turbulence causes random modulation of the intensity and phase of light, resulting in a speckle pattern in the far field. This study focused on partially coherent Gaussian Schell model beams and derived an analytical expression of the cross-spectral density function for their transmission through atmospheric turbulence, based on the generalized Huygens–Fresnel principle and the Tatarski spectrum model. Numerical simulations were used to investigate the effects of the source parameters and turbulence strength on the intensity distribution, beam width, and coherence length of partially coherent light in horizontal atmospheric transmission. The results demonstrate that diffraction-induced broadening primarily affects the intensity distribution of light in free-space transmission. Short transmission distances in atmospheric turbulence have comparable characteristics to those in a vacuum; however, as the turbulence intensity and transmission distance increase, the beam broadening effect amplifies, and the coherence length is reduced. The findings are relevant to the design of acquisition, pointing, and tracking systems for wireless laser communication systems and offer insights into the optimization of optical systems for atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:We investigated the performance of wireless optical communication systems with polarization shift keying modulation when the atmospheric turbulence is anisotropic. Based on the unified theory of polarization and coherence, the characteristic of polarization crosstalk on propagation was shown. Moreover, we explored the effects of propagation distances and turbulent parameters on the signal-to-noise ratio loss of communication system. The results illustrated that polarization crosstalk of horizontal direction on the vertical direction is the main factor affecting communication performance. And it is more conducive to transmit information when the turbulence is anisotropic and the difference between two anisotropic factors is small.

Abstract:Based on extended Huygens-Fresnel principle, analytical expressions of beam width and far-field angular spreading for electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence are obtained. The effects of coherence and polarization on beam spreading and directionality in atmospheric turbulence are investigated in detail. A condition is obtained under which beams with different degrees of spatial coherence and polarization will generate the same far-field angular spreading in atmospheric turbulence. Our results have potential application in long-distance free space optical communications.

Abstract:Non-classical polarization properties of dark hollow beams propagating through non-Kolmogorov turbulence are studied. The analytic equation for the polarization degree of the quantization partially coherent dark hollow beams is obtained.It is found that the polarization fluctuations of the quantization partially coherent dark hollow beams are dependent on the turbulence factors and beam parameters with the detection photon numbers. Furthermore, an investigation of the changes in the on-axis propagation point and off-axis propagation point shows that the polarization degree of the quantization partially coherent dark hollow beams presents oscillation for a short propagation distance and gradually returns to zero for a sufficiently long distance.

Abstract:The properties of polarization preservation of partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beams propagating along different atmospheric turbulence paths were studied. The analytical expressions for the polarization of partially coherent Hermite-Gaussian beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence along different paths have been derived. It is shown that the larger the coherence length is, and the larger the beam order m, n are, the less the polarization is changed. We found that the evolution properties of the polarization in slant-down paths through turbulent atmosphere are similar to the case in free space if the condition zenith angle xi < pi/4 is satisfied. While at a long propagation distance, evolution properties of polarization in horizontal paths of turbulent atmosphere differs much from those in free space and in slant paths. The results may allow one to choose the optimal propagation path in terms of specific applications, which is helpful for future experimental implementation of multiple-degrees-of-freedom free-space communication.

Abstract:It was shown some years ago that the spectrum of a stochastic scalar field depends not only on the source spectrum but also on the degree of coherence of the source. In this paper we show that there are electromagnetic fields for which not only the state of coherence of the source, but also its degree of polarization affect the spectrum of the radiated field. We illustrate the analysis by diagrams which show the far-zone spectra of some stochastic electromagnetic beams generated by sources of different states of coherence and different degrees of polarization. The spectra of the radiated field depend both on coherence properties of the source and its degree of polarization and are found to be different in different directions of observation.

Abstract:In coherent optical communication, the application of linearly polarized light can greatly improve communication sensitivity and communication capacity. However, when a laser transmits in an inferior atmospheric layer, the polarization character is influenced by atmospheric turbulence. This study proposes a measurement experiment of the characteristics of linearly polarized light over an 11.16-km turbulent path. We also present a theoretical approach and its operation for investigating the polarization characteristics of a laser. The variations of polarization under different atmosphere link distances and turbulence intensities are also discussed. The experimental results were in agreement with the theoretical analysis results. The theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the effect of atmospheric turbulence on polarization direction is stronger than that of atmospheric turbulence on the polarization state. This work will benefit coherent free-space optical communication system design efforts.
