Abstract:Ghost imaging is an indirect system that allows the imaging of an object without directly seeing the object. The speckle pattern that contains the information about light and objects has increasingly become a popular topic in pseudothermal light ghost imaging. However, existing research still has encountered problems of poor imaging quality and slow sampling speeds. We propose a ghost imaging method based on N-order speckle patterns to recover the object (NSGI). The N-order speckle patterns combine N independent laser speckles individually produced by passing an expanded and collimated He-Ne laser through a digital micro-mirror device (DMD). The sampling frequency can be improved by controlling the trigger signals of different DMDs. The results of the simulation and experiment have verified that our method can increase sampling speed and reconstruction accuracy. Abstract:Ghost imaging has gone through from quantum to classical pseudothermal to computational field over the last two decades. As a kernel part in computational ghost imaging (CGI), the reconstruction algorithm plays a decisive role in imaging quality and system practicality. In order to introduce more prior knowledge into the reconstruction algorithm, existing research adds image patch prior into CGI and improves the imaging efficiency. In this paper, the total variation minimization algorithm via adaptive deep dictionary learning (TVADDL) is proposed to update an adaptive deep dictionary through the CGI reconstruction process. The proposed algorithm framework is able to capture more precise texture features with a multi-layer architecture dictionary and adapt the learned dictionary by gradient descent on CGI reconstruction loss value. The results of simulation and experiment show that TVADDL can achieve higher peak signal-to-noise ratio than the algorithms without patch prior and the algorithms using the shallow dictionary or non-adaptive deep dictionary.

Abstract:Ghost imaging is an unconventional imaging method, which has invoked many applications in various fields. However, it is still a major challenge to achieve high-fidelity high-resolution images at a sub-Nyquist sampling rate. Here, we present a ghost imaging method that illuminates an object with three directional Tetris-like patterns, which can greatly trade off the contradiction between the high resolution and high detection signal-to-noise ratio. As the projected patterns gradually shrink during the detection, the image is also gradually recovered from low to high resolution. In addition, this method can recover complex chromatic objects without any compromising image quality by adaptively abandoning unnecessary patterns at sampling rates well below the Nyquist limit. Meanwhile, the dynamic probing scheme has an excellent noise-removal capability. The simulation and experiment demonstrate that the sampling rate to recover a high-fidelity image is only 10.7% for a scene of a 9.7% duty cycle. For a very noisy scene whose peak signal–noise rate (PSNR) is 10.18 dB [the structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.068], this scheme increases the PSNR to 18.63 dB [structural similarity index (SSIM) to 0.73]. Therefore, the proposed method may be useful for ghost imaging in the low sampling rate regime or complex chromatic objects reconstruction.

Abstract:Recently, ghost imaging has been attracting attention because its mechanism could lead to many applications inaccessible to conventional imaging methods. However, it is challenging for high-contrast and high-resolution imaging, due to its low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the demand of high sampling rate in detection. To circumvent these challenges, we propose a ghost imaging scheme that exploits Haar wavelets as illuminating patterns with a bi-frequency light projecting system and frequency-selecting single-pixel detectors. This method provides a theoretically 100% image contrast and high-detection SNR, which reduces the requirement of high dynamic range of detectors, enabling high-resolution ghost imaging. Moreover, it can highly reduce the sampling rate (far below Nyquist limit) for a sparse object by adaptively abandoning unnecessary patterns during the measurement. These characteristics are experimentally verified with a resolution of 512 x 512 and a sampling rate lower than 5%. A high-resolution (1000 x 1000 x 1000) 3D reconstruction of an object is also achieved from multi-angle images. Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) possesses significant application prospects in scattering imaging, which is a classic example of underdetermined conversion problem in optical field. However, even under the framework of single-pixel imaging (SPI), a challenge remains unresolved, i.e., structured patterns may be damaged by scattering media in both the emissive and receiving optical paths. In this study, an extendible ghost imaging, a numerical reproduction of the qualitative process using deep learning (DL)-based GI is presented. First, we propose and experimentally verify a brief degradation-guided reconstruction (DR) approach with a neural network to demonstrate the degradation principle of scattering, including realistic dataset simulations and a new training structure in the form of a convolutional neural network (CNN). Then, a novel photon contribution model (PCM) with redundant parameters is proposed to generate intensity sequences from the forward direction through volumetric scattering media; the redundant parameters are constructed and relate to the special output configuration in a lightweight CNN with two branches, based on a reformulated atmospheric scattering model. The proposed scheme recovers the semantics of targets and suppresses the imaging noise in the strong scattering medium, and the obtained results are very satisfactory for applications to scattering media of more practical scenarios and are available for various scattering coefficients and work distances of an imaging prototype. After using DL methods in computational imaging, we conclude that strategies embedded in optics or broader physical factors can result in solutions with better effects for unanalyzable processes.

Abstract:High-quality computational ghost imaging under low sampling has always attracted much attention and is an important step in the practical application of computational ghost imaging. However, as far as we know, most studies focus on achieving high-quality computational ghost imaging with one single pixel detector. The high efficiency computational ghost imaging method using multiple single pixel detectors for array measurement is rarely mentioned. In this work, a new computational ghost imaging method based on deep learning technology and array detector measurement has been proposed, which can achieve fast and high-quality imaging. This method can resolve the problem of misalignment and overlap of some pixels in the reconstructed image due to the incomplete correspondence between the array detector and the light field area. At the same time, the problem of partial information loss in the reconstructed image because of the gap between the detection units of the array detector has also been solved. Simulation and experiment results show that our method can obtain high computational ghost imaging quality, even at the low sampling rate of 0.03, and as the detection unit of the array detector increases, the number of sampling is further reduced. This method improves the applicability of computational ghost imaging and can be applied to many fields such as real-time detection and biomedical imaging. Abstract:Fast computational ghost imaging with high quality and ultra-high-definition resolution reconstructed images has important application potential in target tracking, biological imaging and other fields. However, as far as we know, the resolution (pixels) of the reconstructed image is related to the number of measurements. And the limited resolution of reconstructed images at low measurement times hinders the application of computational ghost imaging. Therefore, in this work, a new computational ghost imaging method based on saliency variable sampling detection is proposed to achieve high-quality imaging at low measurement times. This method physically variable samples the salient features and realizes compressed detection of computational ghost imaging based on the salient periodic features of the bucket detection signal. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the reconstructed image quality of our method is similar to the compressed sensing method at low measurement times. Even at 500 (sampling rate ) measurement times, the reconstructed image of the method still has the target features. Moreover, the (4K) pixels ultra-high-definition resolution reconstructed images can be obtained at only a sampling rate of . This method has great potential value in real-time detection and tracking, biological imaging and other fields.

Abstract:Ghost imaging (GI) through dynamic and complex scattering media remains challenging. The existence of dynamic scattering gives rise to a failure of GI schemes. Here, we report a deep learning-enhanced GI scheme with supervised corrections (SCGI) of dynamic scaling factors to realize high-resolution ghost reconstruction through dynamic and complex scattering media. The SCGI scheme is developed to approximate the variation of dynamic scaling factors in an optical channel and correct the recorded light intensities with a Gaussian prior. An untrained neural network powered by regularization by denoising for the SCGI scheme (SCGI-URED) is developed to further recover high-visibility ghost images. Experimental results demonstrate that high-resolution and high-visibility GI can be realized in dynamic and complex scattering media. The proposed method provides a reliable tool for implementing high-resolution and high-visibility GI through dynamic and complex scattering media and could give an impetus to developing dynamic scattering imaging in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:We propose a new local-binary ghost imaging by using point-by-point method. This method can compensate the degradation of imaging quality due to the loss of information during binarization process. The numerical and experimental results show that the target details can be reconstructed well by this method when compared with traditional ghost imaging. By comparing the differences of the speckle patterns from different binarization methods, we also give the corresponding explanation. Our results may have the potential applications in areas with high requirements for imaging details, such as target recognition.

We describe a three dimensional arrangement using only a single-pixel detector based on computational ghost imaging. The three dimensional image of the object can be divided into gray-scale image and digital elevation model, where the gray-scale image can be obtained relying spatial correlation, and the digital elevation model can be obtained relying temporal correlation. Abstract:Unlike traditional optical imaging schemes, computational ghost imaging (CGI) provides a way to reconstruct images with the spatial distribution information of illumination patterns and the light intensity collected by a single-pixel detector or bucket detector. Compared with stationary scenes, the relative motion between the target and the imaging system in a dynamic scene causes the degradation of reconstructed images. Therefore, we propose a time-variant retina-like computational ghost imaging method for axially moving targets. The illuminated patterns are specially designed with retina-like structures, and the radii of foveal region can be modified according to the axial movement of target. By using the time-variant retina-like patterns and compressive sensing algorithms, high-quality imaging results are obtained. Experimental verification has shown its effectiveness in improving the reconstruction quality of axially moving targets. The proposed method retains the inherent merits of CGI and provides a useful reference for high-quality GI reconstruction of a moving target.

Abstract:Imaging through strong scattering media is still one of the difficult challenges in the optical imaging field since the intensity information of target objects can be severely destroyed and heavily reduced by scatterers. The ghost imaging technique only using a single-pixel detector offers compelling advantages for detecting such weak signals. Here we propose a novel kind of imaging proposal, named asynchronous computational ghost imaging (ACGI), which is capable of capturing the ghost image of an unknown object by using the asynchronous detection. The theoretical explanation and experimental examples are given to show the influence of parameters of the asynchronous detection on the image quality of the ACGI system. To improve the image quality, we introduce a kind of algorithm based on compressed sensing into the ACGI system, where sharp ghost images can be reconstructed with much fewer measurements. More importantly, we experimentally investigate the robustness of the ACGI system through strong scattering media and the ghost image can still be reconstructed by means of the asynchronous detection. Our work offers a new way to realize ghost imaging through strong scattering media in the asynchronous detection way, where the requirement of the synchronous detection in the time and intensity aspects can be largely reduced, which may be very useful for real applications of ghost imaging in X-ray or weak light environments.

Abstract:X-ray “ghost” imaging has drawn great attention for its potential to obtain images with a high resolution and lower radiation dose in medical diagnosis, even with only a single-pixel detector. However, it is hard to realize with a portable x-ray source due to its low flux. Here, we demonstrate a computational x-ray ghost imaging scheme where a real bucket detector and specially designed high-efficiency modulation masks are used, together with a robust deep learning algorithm in which a compressed set of Hadamard matrices is incorporated into a multi-level wavelet convolutional neural network. With a portable incoherent x-ray source of ∼37 µm diameter, we have obtained an image of a real object from only 18.75% of the Nyquist sampling rate. A high imaging resolution of ∼10 µm has been achieved, which is required for cancer detection and so represents a concrete step toward the realization of a practical low cost x-ray ghost imaging camera for applications in biomedicine, archeology, material science, and so forth.

Abstract:Ghost imaging incorporating deep learning technology has recently attracted much attention in the optical imaging field. However, deterministic illumination and multiple exposure are still essential in most scenarios. Here we propose a ghost imaging scheme based on a novel dynamic decoding deep learning framework (Y-net), which works well under both deterministic and indeterministic illumination. Benefited from the end-to-end characteristic of our network, the image of a sample can be achieved directly from the data collected by the detector. The sample is illuminated only once in the experiment, and the spatial distribution of the speckle encoding the sample in the experiment can be completely different from that of the simulation speckle in training, as long as the statistical characteristics of the speckle remain unchanged. This approach is particularly important to high-resolution x-ray ghost imaging applications due to its potential for improving image quality and reducing radiation damage.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a novel ghost imaging experiment utilizing a classical light source,capable of resolving objects with a high visibility.The experimental results show that our scheme can indeed realize ghost imaging with high visibility for a relatively complicated object composed of three near-ellipse-shaped holes with different dimensions.In our experiment,the largest hole is ~36 times of the smallest one in area.Each of the three holes exhibits high-visibility in excess of 80%.The high visibility and high spatial-resolution advantages of this technique could have applications in remote sensing.

Abstract: In ghost imaging scheme, an illuminated light is split into test and reference beams which pass through two different optical systems respectively and an image is constructed by the second-order correlation between the two light beams. Since both the two light beams are all diffracted when passing through the optical systems, spatial resolution of ghost imaging is in general lower than that of a corresponding conventional imaging system. When Gaussian-shaped light spots are used to illuminate an object, randomly scanning across the object plane, in ghost imaging scheme, we show that by localizing central positions of the spots of the reference light beam, the resolution can be enhanced by a factor of $\sqrt{2}$ same as that of the corresponding conventional imaging system. We also find that the resolution can be further enhanced by setting an appropriate threshold to the bucket measurement of ghost imaging.
