Abstract:In this work we perform real time simulations for the dynamics of braiding a pair of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) through a quantum dot in a minimal setup of pure 1D realization. We reveal the strong nonadiabatic effect when the dot energy level approaches to zero in order to achieve a geometric phase $\pi/4$ which is required for a full exchange between the MZMs. Rather than the strategies of nonuniformly manipulating the system according to adiabatic condition and shortcuts-to-adiabaticity, we propose and illustrate a more feasible scheme to suppress the nonadiabatic transition, meanwhile which allows for a full exchange between the Majorana modes.

Abstract:As the condensed matter analog of Majorana fermion, the Majorana zero-mode is well known as a building block of fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. This review focuses on the recent progress of Majorana experiments, especially experiments about semiconductor-superconductor hybrid devices. We first sketch Majorana zero-mode formation from a bottom-up view, which is more suitable for beginners and experimentalists. Then, we survey the status of zero-energy state signatures reported recently, from zero-energy conductance peaks, the oscillations, the quantization, and the interactions with extra degrees of freedom. We also give prospects of future experiments for advancing one-dimensional semiconductor nanowire-superconductor hybrid materials and devices.

Photonic simulation of Majorana-based Jones polynomials

Abstract:Jones polynomials were introduced as a tool to distinguish between topologically different links. Recently, they emerged as the central building block of topological quantum computation: by braiding non-Abelian anyons it is possible to realise quantum algorithms through the computation of Jones polynomials. So far, it has been a formidable task to evaluate Jones polynomials through the control and manipulation of non-Abelian anyons. In this study, a photonic quantum system employing two-photon correlations and non-dissipative imaginary-time evolution is utilized to simulate two inequivalent braiding operations of Majorana zero modes. The resulting amplitudes are shown to be mathematically equivalent to Jones polynomials at a particular value of their parameter. The high-fidelity of our optical platform allows us to distinguish between a wide range of links, such as Hopf links, Solomon links, Trefoil knots, Figure Eight knots and Borromean rings, through determining their corresponding Jones polynomials. Our photonic quantum simulator represents a significant step towards executing fault-tolerant quantum algorithms based on topological quantum encoding and manipulation.

Abstract:Abstract Majorana zero modes are localized quasiparticles that obey non-Abelian exchange statistics. Braiding Majorana zero modes forms the basis of topologically protected quantum operations which could, in principle, significantly reduce qubit decoherence and gate control errors at the device level. Therefore, searching for Majorana zero modes in various solid state systems is a major topic in condensed matter physics and quantum computer science. Since the first experimental signature observed in hybrid superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices, this field has witnessed a dramatic expansion in material science, transport experiments and theory. While making the first topological qubit based on these Majorana nanowires is currently an ongoing effort, several related important transport experiments are still being pursued in the near term. These will not only serve as intermediate steps but also show Majorana physics in a more fundamental aspect. In this perspective, we summarize these key Majorana experiments and the potential challenges.

Optimising the exchange of Majorana zero modes in a quantum nanowire network

Abstract:Determination of optimal control protocols for Majorana zero modes during their exchange is a crucial step towards the realisation of the topological quantum computer. In this paper, we study the finite-time exchange process of Majorana zero modes on a network formed by coupled $p$-wave superconducting one-dimensional nanowires. We provide scalable computational tools for optimising such an exchange process relying on deep learning techniques. To accomplish the scalability, we derive and implement an analytic formula for the gradient of the quantum infidelity which measures the error in the topological quantum gate generation in the Majorana zero modes exchange. Our optimisation strategy relies on learning the optimised transport protocol via a neural net which is followed by direct gradient descent fine tuning. The optimised exchange protocols in the super-adiabatic regime discover the fact that the Majorana zero modes must necessarily stop before crossing a junction point in the network. We explain that this is caused by fast changes in the energy gap of the system whenever one of the Majorana zero modes approaches a junction point. In particular, the energy gap exhibits oscillations followed by a sharp jump. We explain this phenomenon analytically in the regime where the Majorana zero modes are completely localised. Finally, we study how the disorder in the quantum nanowire affects the exchange protocols. This shows that understanding the disorder pattern would allow one to improve quantum gate fidelity by one to two orders of magnitude.

Collisions of Majorana Zero Modes

Abstract:We investigate the collisions of Majorana zero modes, which are presented as inter-soliton collisional events in fermionic superfluids with spin-orbit coupling. Our results demonstrate that, the zero energy splitting, induced by the overlapping of inter-soliton Majorana wave-functions upon collision, generates an effective repulsive force for Majorana states, which in turn protected themselves against into bulk excitation. As a result, the collision between solitons associated with Majorana zero modes appears to be repulsive and elastic, as they do not penetrate each other but instead repel without energy loss. As well, similar repulsive behavior is observed in collisions between soliton-induced and defect-pinned Majorana zero modes. Our research offers new insights into the features of Majorana fermions, and robustness in the collisions of Majorana zero modes bodes well for the prospects of topological quantum computation with a multitude of Majorana qubits.

Abstract:Geometric phases, generated by cyclic evolutions of quantum systems, offer an inspiring playground for advancing fundamental physics and technologies, alike. Intriguingly, the exotic statistics of anyons realised in physical systems can be interpreted as a topological version of geometric phases. However, non-Abelian statistics has not yet been demonstrated in the laboratory. Here we employ an all optical quantum system that simulates the statistical evolution of Majorana fermions. As a result we experimentally realise non-Abelian Berry phases with the topological characteristic that they are invariant under continues deformations of their control parameters. We implement a universal set of Majorana inspired gates by performing topological and non-topological evolutions and investigate their resilience against perturbative errors. Our photonic experiment, while it is not scalable, it suggests the intriguing possibility of experimentally simulating Majorana statistics with scalable technologies.

Abstract:We perform simulations for transport and nontrivial fusion of Majorana zero modes in topological superconducting quantum wires. We uncover interesting behaviors of nonadiabatic transition associated with the transport through mini-gate-controlled multiple-segments modulations. Owing to breaking of the initial fermion parity induced by nonadiabatic transitions, a deviation from the statistics of outcomes of nontrivial fusion arises and is analyzed. Moreover, we develop a measurement scheme to infer the amount of fermion parity breaking and nonadiabatic transition probability to excited states, based on the characteristic spectrum of measurement current by a quantum-point-contact detector, by measurement of the charge occupation dynamics in a fusion-outcome-probing quantum dot.

Abstract:Topological quantum computation based on anyons is a promising approach to achieve fault-tolerant quantum computing. The Majorana zero modes in the Kitaev chain are an example of non-Abelian anyons where braiding operations can be used to perform quantum gates. Here we perform a quantum simulation of topological quantum computing, by teleporting a qubit encoded in the Majorana zero modes of a Kitaev chain. The quantum simulation is performed by mapping the Kitaev chain to its equivalent spin version and realizing the ground states in a superconducting quantum processor. The teleportation transfers the quantum state encoded in the spin-mapped version of the Majorana zero mode states between two Kitaev chains. The teleportation circuit is realized using only braiding operations and can be achieved despite being restricted to Clifford gates for the Ising anyons. The Majorana encoding is a quantum error detecting code for phase-flip errors, which is used to improve the average fidelity of the teleportation for six distinct states from 70.76±0.35% to 84.60±0.11%, well beyond the classical bound in either case.

Abstract:The goal of creating topologically protected qubits using non-Abelian anyons is currently one of the most exciting areas of research in quantum condensed matter physics. Majorana zero modes (MZM), which are non-Abelian anyons predicted to emerge as localized zero energy states at the ends of one-dimensional topological superconductors, have been the focus of these efforts. In the search for experimental signatures of these novel quasi-particles in different material platforms, the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) has played a key role. The power of high-resolution STM techniques is perhaps best illustrated by their application in identifying MZM in one-dimensional chains of magnetic atoms on the surface of a superconductor. In this platform, STM spectroscopic mapping has demonstrated the localized nature of MZM zero-energy excitations at the ends of such chains, while experiments with superconducting and magnetic STM tips have been used to uniquely distinguish them from trivial edge modes. Beyond the atomic chains, STM has also uncovered signatures of MZM in two-dimensional materials and topological surface and boundary states, when they are subjected to the superconducting proximity effect. Looking ahead, future STM experiments can advance our understanding of MZM and their potential for creating topological qubits, by exploring avenues to demonstrate their non-Abelian statistics.

Abstract:Among the major approaches that are being pursued for realizing quantum bits, the Majorana-based platform has been the most recent to be launched. It attempts to realize qubits which store quantum information in a topologically-protected manner. The quantum information is protected by its nonlocal storage in localized and well-separated Majorana zero modes, and manipulated by exploiting their nonabelian quantum exchange properties. Realizing these topological qubits is experimentally challenging, requiring superconductivity, helical electrons (created by spin-orbit coupling) and breaking of time reversal symmetry to all cooperate in an uncomfortable alliance. Over the past decade, several candidate material systems for realizing Majorana-based topological qubits have been explored, and there is accumulating, though still debated, evidence that zero modes are indeed being realized. This paper reviews the basic physical principles on which these approaches are based, the material systems that are being developed, and the current state of the field. We highlight both the progress made and the challenges that still need to be overcome.

Abstract:The nonlocal nature of the Majorana zero modes implies an inherent teleportation channel and unique transport signatures for Majorana identification. In this work we make an effort to eliminate some inconsistencies between the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation based treatment and the method using the associated regular fermion number states of vacancy and occupation within the `second quantization' framework. We first consider a rather simple `quantum dot--Majorana wire--quantum dot' system, then a more experimentally relevant setup by replacing the quantum dots with transport leads. For the latter setup, based on the dynamical evolution of electron-hole excitations, we develop a single-particle-wavefunction approach to quantum transport, which renders both the conventional quantum scattering theory and the steady-state nonequilibrium Green's function formalism as its stationary limit. Further, we revisit the issue of Majorana tunneling spectroscopy and consider in particular the two-lead coupling setup. We present comprehensive discussions with detailed comparisons, and predict a zero-bias-limit conductance of $e^2/h$ (for symmetric coupling to the leads),which is a half of the popular result of the zero-bias-peak, or, the so-called Majorana quantized conductance ($2e^2/h$). The present work may arouse a need to reexamine some existing studies and the proposed treatment is expected to be involved in analyzing future experiments in this fast developing field.
Classical Majorana-like Zero Modes in an Acoustic Kitaev Chain

Abstract:The one-dimensional Kitaev chain, being one of the most significant superconductor models that support Majorana fermions, has been considered as a highly probable method to host nonlocal qubits for topological quantum computation. Here we theoretically introduce the concept into the classical-wave systems and report the first experimental prototype of the acoustic Kitaev chain. We rigorously demonstrate the acoustic correspondence of the Kitaev chain and experimentally observe the classical unpaired Majorana-like zero mode in a welldesigned acoustic spinless p-wave superconductor. In particular, clear physical evidence also demonstrates such exotic acoustic modes can be manipulated to a certain extend like a quasiparticle, which is directly identified by employing a Kitaev "keyboard." These results are expected to open new avenues for novel applications of topological acoustics.

Abstract:Coupled Majorana zero modes with nonzero energies are generally detrimental to the non-Abelian statistics due to the additional dynamic phase. Nevertheless, we show that a well-connected lead can introduce a local non -Hermitian dissipation term to shift the energies of both coupled Majorana modes to zero, and surprisingly turn the coupled Majorana mode far from the lead into a dark Majorana mode with exponentially small dissipation. This dark Majorana mode can conquer the drawback of the partially overlapped Majorana zero modes and possess the properties of true Majorana zero mode such as the perfect fractional Josephson effect and the non-Abelian statistics.

Abstract:Investigating the interplay of dualities, generalized symmetries, and topological defects beyond theoretical models is an important challenge in condensed matter physics and quantum materials. A simple model exhibiting this physics is the transverse-field Ising model, which can host a noninvertible topological defect that performs the Kramers-Wannier duality transformation. When acting on one point in space, this duality defect imposes the duality twisted boundary condition and binds a single Majorana zero mode. This Majorana zero mode is unusual as it lacks localized partners and has an infinite lifetime, even in finite systems. Using Floquet driving of a closed Ising chain with a duality defect, we generate this Majorana zero mode in a digital quantum computer. We detect the mode by measuring its associated persistent autocorrelation function using an efficient sampling protocol and a compound strategy for error mitigation. We also show that the Majorana zero mode resides at the domain wall between two regions related by a Kramers-Wannier duality. Finally, we highlight the robustness of the isolated Majorana zero mode to integrability and symmetry-breaking perturbations. Our findings offer an approach to investigating exotic topological defects in digitized quantum devices.

Realizing Majorana fermion modes in the Kitaev model

Abstract:We study the possibility to realize a Majorana zero mode that is robust and may be easily manipulated for braiding in quantum computing in the ground state of the Kitaev model in this work. To achieve this we first apply a uniform [111] magnetic field to the gapless Kitaev model and turn the Kitaev model to an effective p + ip topological superconductor of spinons. We then study possible vortex binding in such system to a topologically trivial spot in the ground state. We consider two cases in the system: one is a vacancy and the other is a fully polarized spin. We show that in both cases, the system binds a vortex with the defect and a robust Majorana zero mode in the ground state at a weak uniform [111] magnetic field. The distribution and asymptotic behavior of these Majorana zero modes are studied. The Majorana zero modes in both cases decay exponentially in space, and are robust against local perturbations and other Majorana zero modes far away, which makes them promising candidates for braiding in topological quantum computing.
