Abstract:We demonstrate all fiber Fabry-Perot resonators (F-P resonators) based on Sagnac loop mirrors assembled with tellurite microfibers. As-assembled F-P resonators, with dimensions of hundreds of micrometers, show clear resonant responses with typical quality factor of about 5700, free spectral range of about 1 nm, and a maximum extinction ratio of 18 dB. The reflectivity of the loop mirror and the effective cavity length of the F-P resonator can be tuned by micromanipulation under an optical microscope. F-P resonators demonstrated here show advantages of small size, good resonance, easy fabrication, tunability, and easy integration with fiber systems. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America
Modes Trimming and Clustering in a Weakly Perturbed High‐Q Whispering Gallery Microresonator

Abstract:In general, a high-quality (Q) microresonator can accommodate abundant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with the mode number increasing with the dimensional sizes of the microresonator. Removing the unnecessary modes while reorganizing the remaining modes is of vital importance, which, however, has been proved challenging and usually results in a tradeoff with the Q of the microresonator. Here, an effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism is revealed underlying the generation of polygon and star modes in weakly perturbed tapered fiber-coupled lithium niobate whispering gallery microresonators. Experimentally, various polygon and star modes are observed in sequence within a single microresonator by tuning the excitation wavelength or varying the coupling position between a tapered fiber and the circular microresonator, which can be well reproduced with the theoretical model. The finding offers a ubiquitous solution for a broad range of applications requiring elaborate selection and organization of the high-Q WGMs. An effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism underlying the generation of polygon and star modes is demonstrated in a weakly perturbed lithium niobate microcavity. The various polygon and star mode signals are observed in sequence in a microcavity without the need for some external deformations, agreeing well with the theoretical model.image

Abstract:Here we propose and demonstrate a new type of microsphere whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator with microsphere-microsphere coupling. The coupler consists of a microsphere attached to a single mode fiber (SMF) tip by use of UV adhesive. The microsphere-microsphere coupling system is robust, compact in size, easy in fabrication and stable in operation and has good Q-factor of 4.72×10 3 . The WGM resonator developed in this work is also explored for vibration measurement.
A Simple Approach to Fiber-Based Tunable Microcavity with High Coupling Efficiency

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:Nicotinic acid (niacin) has been widely used as a favorable lipid-lowering drug for several decades, and the orphan G protein-coupled receptor GPR109A has been identified to be a receptor for niacin. Mechanistic investigations have shown that as a Gi-coupled receptor, GPR109A inhibits adenylate cyclase activity upon niacin activation, thereby inhibiting free fatty acid liberation. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms that regulate signaling and internalization of GPR109A remain largely unknown. To further characterize GPR109A internalization, we made a construct to express GPR109A fused with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) at its carboxyl-terminal end. In stable GPR109A-EGFP-expressing HEK-293 cells, GPR109A-EGFP was mainly localized at the plasma membrane and was rapidly internalized in a dose- and time-dependent manner upon agonist stimulation. GPR109A internalization was completely blocked by hypertonic sucrose, indicating that GPR109A internalizes via the clathrin-coated pit pathway. Further investigation demonstrated that internalized GPR109A was recycled to the cell surface after the removal of agonist, and recycling of the internalized receptors was not blocked by treatment with acidotropic agents, NH4Cl and monensin. Pertussis toxin pretreatment not only inhibited forskolin-induced cAMP accumulation and intracellular Ca2+ mobilization; it also significantly attenuated agonist-promoted GPR109A internalization. Moreover, RNA interference experiments showed that knockdown of GRK2 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 2) and arrestin3 expression significantly impaired receptor internalization. Taken together, these results indicate that the agonist-induced internalization of GPR109A receptors is regulated by GRK2 and arrestin3 in a pertussis toxin-sensitive manner and that internalized receptor recycling is independent of endosomal acidification.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new type of whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator with microsphere-microsphere coupling. The device is based on two cascaded microspheres glued on a single mode fiber tip. The incident light from the fiber core diverges in the first microsphere and part of light is coupled to the surface of the second microsphere, exciting whispering gallery mode resonance when the angle between the connection line of the two microsphere centers and the fiber axis is appropriate. Such a whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator is robust in structure, compact in size, easy in fabrication and stable in operation.

Abstract:Whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) have garnered significant interest due to their potential applications in the fields of electro-optic modulation and microwave to optical photon conversion. In this study, we have leveraged an electro-optic crystal, lead indium niobate-lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PIN-PMN-PT), to fabricate a high-quality WGMR. Our investigation revealed that the crystal composition used in this work is 0.24PIN-0.45PMN-0.31PT, and each element of the whole sample is homogeneously distributed. The dielectric properties of the sample revealed the necessity of limiting the temperature and external electric field frequency to below 100 °C and 106 Hz, respectively. The obtained optical quality factor value (Q value) of the resonator is ∼0.7 × 105. Impressively, our resonator could be conveniently tuned by exploiting the enormous inverse piezoelectric effect d31 of the crystal, thereby alleviating the need for precise fabrication. Furthermore, a theoretical analysis of our resonator revealed that a calculated resonance wavelength shift is within a broad range of 2.16 nm. Intriguingly, if the surface roughness of the resonator is reduced tenfold, we can increase the calculated Q value dependent on surface scattering by 104. Our finding showcases the tremendous potential of the PIN-PMN-PT crystal-based WGMR as versatile building blocks for a variety of applications in the burgeoning field of photonic technology.

Abstract:A reflective whispering gallery mode microsphere resonator is presented. The device consists of a single-mode fiber, a thick-wall capillary tube, and a microsphere. The capillary tube and single-mode fiber are firstly conically fused together using a fusion splicer, followed by tapering the capillary tube, then cut at the end of tapered region of capillary tube, and finally, the microsphere is inserted into the tapered region of capillary tube by use of a fiber taper and a small amount of glue. The device is alignment free, has compact size, good robustness, and stable operation.

Abstract:An x-cut millimeter-size lithium niobate whispering gallery mode disk resonator is demonstrated, which is fabricated based on commercially available lithium niobate disk with diameter of 12 mm and thickness of 1 mm. The Q factor is measured using the linewidth method, which is found to be Q=1.2×10 7 , suggesting a very good condition of the WGM disk resonator. In addition, the transmission behaviors of WGM resonance under different incident angles are investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel method for rapidly fabricating polymeric optical whispering-gallery mode (WGM) resonators. A 3D micro-printing technology based on high-power UV light source and high-speed optical spatial modulator (SLM) is developed, and the fabrication and testing of suspended-toroid WGM resonator array are demonstrated in the experiments. The experimental results reveal that the demonstrated method is very flexible and time-saving to quickly fabricate complex WGM resonators.

Abstract:Typical microresonators exhibit a large frequency spacing between resonances and a limited tunability. This impedes their use in a large class of applications which require a resonance of the microcavity to coincide with a predetermined frequency. Here, we experimentally overcome this limitation with highly prolate-shaped whispering-gallery-mode "bottle microresonators" fabricated from standard optical glass fibers. Our resonators combine an ultra-high quality factor of 360 million, a small mode volume, and near lossless fibre coupling, characteristic of whispering-gallery-mode resonators, with a simple and customizable mode structure enabling full tunability.

Abstract:In this study, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like in a single conical microresonator (CMR) fabricated by combining arc discharge and pull method. Benefited from the gradually changing diameter along the longitudinal axis of the CMR, the resonance frequency can be tuned when the CMR coupled by a tapered fiber waveguide. The characteristic of internally-tuning in our CMR is confirmed theoretically, numerically and experimentally. In particular, Fano and EIT-like effect with a quality (Q) factor are achieved by scanning the varied diameter carefully originating from approximate two resonant frequencies in a wavelength apart. In addition, these experimental observations can be well fitted with the coupled mode theory. These findings may open new avenues for realizing high-Q EIT, which pave the way for an enhanced approach in bio-sensing applications, nonlinear optics and optical switching devices.

Abstract:Whispering-gallery modes (WGMs) in a zeolite cylinder have been effectively coupled with a low-loss fiber taper. The fiber transmission spectrum directly shows the WGM distribution, which agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on geometric optics. Due to other scattering and absorbing mechanisms, the measured quality factors of the WGMs are limited to approximately 800. This result shows that the fiber taper provides a powerful tool for coupling WGMs of a zeolite cylinder, and this taper-coupled zeolite can be a potential microcavity system for the cavity quantum electrodynamics and the microlaser.

Abstract:High-$Q$ whispering gallery mode microresonators are cornerstones to develop compact coherent sources like single frequency lasers or frequency combs. This work reports a detailed characterization of a whispering gallery mode microsphere in the near ultraviolet. Light coupling in the resonator is obtain thanks to a robust angle-polished fiber allowing to investigate the different coupling regimes. An intrinsic $Q_0$-factor of $2.2 \times 10^8$ and a finesse of $7.3 \times 10^4$ are reported at a wavelength of 420 nm. Physical mechanisms contributing to the $Q_0$-factor are discussed and routes to improve the performances are drawn. Such high-$Q$ factor and high finesse are key ingredients to ease the study of photonic devices based on WGM microresonators.

Abstract:A complete integrated table-top facility for the study of high-$Q$ Whispering Gallery Modes in solid and liquid micro-cavities is described, with emphasis on the in situ fabrication of reliable tapered fibers of sub-micron waist sizes for coupling light into time-dependent liquid micro-cavities. The experimental parameters have been chosen to get nearly adiabatic tapers, with their waist size consistent with the theoretical model. The oscillations in the transmitted power during fiber tapering are monitored to check the coupling of higher order modes and identify the point when the fiber is suitable for pure single mode coupling. The fabricated tapered fibers have greater than 85% transmission on the average and very good polarization fidelity. The tapered fibers have been used for efficiently exciting and detecting WGMs of $Q\sim10^7$ in silica microspheres and of $Q$ up to $7\times10^7$ in microdrops of silicone oils.

Abstract:We have reported the high- Q whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) optical microresonators with broad tuning range. The PDMS microresonators are fabricated at the center of two collimating fiber tips, which can be controlled by the piezoelectric stage. Through stretching the fiber stem, the tuning range of WGMs are demonstrated more than 50 nm. Further investigations demonstrated that the WGM shift has a high force sensitivity (~ 19.7 pm/μN) of the gravitation when the microcavity is stretched by a weight. The theoretical analysis reveals that the high force sensitivity of polymer microresonator can be used for the weak force or height measurement.

Abstract:A new record for high-finesse silica waveguide ring resonators (WRRs), to the best of our knowledge, is demonstrated experimentally. The achieved finesse and resonant depths of the silica WRR with a length of 7.9 cm and a diameter of 2.5 cm are 196.7% and 98%, respectively. In addition, the silica WRR chip is coupled with single-polarization fiber to improve the polarization extinction ratio (PER) and, thus, to reduce the polarization error. With the application of this high-finesse and high-PER WRR to the resonant microoptic gyroscope (RMOG), a bias stability of 0.004 degrees/s is observed over a 1 h timeframe. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first RMOG reported in the open literature that can sense the earth's rotation rate (15 degrees/h). (C) 2017 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Microresonator devices which possess ultra-high quality factors are essential for fundamental investigations and applications. Microsphere and microtoroid resonators support remarkably high Q's at optical frequencies, while planarity constrains preclude their integration into functional lightwave circuits. Conventional semiconductor processing can also be used to realize ultra-high-Q's with planar wedge-resonators. Still, their full integration with side-coupled dielectric waveguides remains an issue. Here we show the full monolithic integration of a wedge-resonator/waveguide vertically-coupled system on a silicon chip. In this approach the cavity and the waveguide lay in different planes. This permits to realize the shallow-angle wedge while the waveguide remains intact, allowing therefore to engineer a coupling of arbitrary strength between these two. The precise size-control and the robustness against post-processing operation due to its monolithic integration makes this system a prominent platform for industrial-scale integration of ultra-high-Q devices into planar lightwave chips.
