Abstract:Near-IR (~1.5 µm) and mid-IR (~8 µm) laser heterodyne radiometers have been recently developed for ground-based remote sensing greenhouse gases in the atmospheric column. Field campaigns have been performed. The developed LHR instruments as well as the preliminary results of their applications to the measurements of CH4, N2O, CO2 (including 13CO2/12CO2), H2O vapor (and its isotopologue HDO) in the atmospheric column will be presented and discussed.

Abstract:Measurements of vertical concentration profiles of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is extremely important for our understanding of regional air quality and global climate change trends. In this context, laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) technique has been developed [1-5] for ground-based remote measurements of GHGs in the atmospheric column.Solar radiation undergoing absorption by multi-species in the atmosphere is coupled into a LHR instrument where the sunlight is mixed with a local oscillator (LO), being usually a tunable laser source, in a fast photodetector. Beating note at radio frequency (RF) resulted from this photomixing contains absorption information of the LO-targeted molecules. Scanning the LO frequency across the target molecular absorption lines allows one to extract the corresponding absorption features from the total absorption of the solar radiation by all molecules in the atmospheric column. Near-IR (~1.5 µm) and mid-IR (~8 µm) [6] LHRs have been recently developed in the present work. A Portable Dual-Channel Laser Heterodyne Radiometer for Simultaneous Remote Measurements of CH4 and CO2 in the Atmospheric Column

Abstract:Laser heterodyne spectroscopic measurement technique[1] has been proved to be a powerful and effective remote sensing tool for measurements of greenhouse gases in the atmospheric column[2-6]. In the present work, we report the development of a portable all-fiber coupled dual-channel laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) and its field deployment. Two DFB lasers operating at 1650.9 nm and 1603.6 nm are used for the remote measurements of column CH4 and CO2, respectively. A fiber optic switch is used to modulate and split the collected sunlight into two channels for simultaneous measurements of both target greenhouse gases. Custom-made preamplifiers combined with digital lock-in amplifiers are used to extract the laser heterodyne signals. The spectral resolution of the instrument is about 0.00442 cm-1, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the measured spectrum of about 250 is achieved with 0.8 s average time per sampling datum. The developed LHR instrument was successfully deployed to a field atmospheric observation experiment (in Dachaidan district, Qinghai province, China).The experimental detail including the LHR instrument integration, dual-channel measurement results of column CH4 and CO2 and preliminary data inversion results will be presented and discussed.Acknowledgments. Abstract:A transportable laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) based on an external cavity quantum cascade laser, operating in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) around 8 mu m, was developed for ground-based remote sensing of multiple greenhouse gases. A newly available novel flexible mid-IR polycrystalline fiber was first exploited to couple solar radiation, real-time captured using a portable sun-tracker, to the LHR receiver. Compared to free space coupling of sunlight, the technique usually used nowadays in the mid-IR, such fiber coupling configuration makes the LHR system readily more stable, simpler, and robust. Operation of the LHR with quasi-shot-noise limited performance was analyzed and experimentally achieved by optimizing local oscillator power. To the best of our knowledge, no such performance approaching the fundamental limit has been reported for a transportable LHR operating at a long mid-IR wavelength around 8 mu m. CH4 and N2O were simultaneously measured in the atmospheric column using the developed mid-IR LHR. The experimental LHR spectrum of CH4 and N2O was compared and is in good agreement with a referenced Fourier-transform infrared spectrum from the Total Carbon Column Observing Network observation site and with a simulation spectrum from atmospheric transmission modeling. Abstract:The performance of an all fibered near-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer (NIR-LHR) is demonstrated in ground-based solar occultation mode. A 1 x 2 fiber optical switch is employed as an alternative modulator to traditional chopper, which makes the system more stable and compact. Two distribute feedback (DFB) lasers centered at 1.6 mu m and 1.65 mu m, are employed as local oscillators to probe absorption lines of CO2 and CH4, respectively. After data processing and retrieval, column-averaged abundances and the mixing ratio of atmospheric CO2 and CH4 are determined based on the measurement of over six months in our laboratory (Hefei, China, 31.9 degrees N 117.16 degrees E). Finally, the results are validated by comparison with the GOSAT results during the same time period. The reported all fibered laser heterodyne radiometer in this manuscript has great potential to be a portable and high spectral resolution instrument for atmospheric remote sensing of multi-component gases.

Abstract:An all-fiber coupled laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR), using a wideband tunable external cavity diode laser (1500–1640 nm) as local oscillator laser, was developed for ground-based remote sensing of carbon dioxide. Optimal absorption lines and transmission spectra of carbon dioxide in this wavelength range were determined. High sensitivity of the LHR was achieved by using a balanced photodetector to suppress the relative intensity noise of the local oscillator laser. The noise model of the highly sensitive LHR was analyzed and compared with the traditional LHR using single photodetector [1-2]. Finally, field campaigns were performed on the roof of the platform of IRENE building in Dunkerque (51.05°N/2.34°E). The measured LHR spectra in the atmospheric column are compared, in good agreement, with referenced Fourier-transform infrared spectra from the TCCON observation network and with the simulation spectra resulting from an atmospheric transmission modeling. Experimental details including noise analysis and LHR spectra will be discussed and presented. Abstract:Measurement of vertical concentration profiles of atmospheric trace gases is of great interest to understand the physics, chemistry, dynamics, and radiation budget of the atmosphere as well as to validate the results provided from chemical models and satellite observations. The laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR), as a passive remote sensing technique, was introduced and developed in 1970s to meet the needs of observing O <inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">3</inf> hole in the atmosphere [1]–[3]. Since then, due to the lack of a suitable tunable laser source being used as a local oscillator (LO) for heterodyne measurement, LHR applications stayed almost in silence. Over the last decade, there has been a revival of the LHR technique as a result of significant advances in lasers and photonics technology [4]. Compared to the currently used Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) for ground-based measurement of trace gases in the atmospheric column, the LHR offers unique advantages including high spectral resolution (<10 −3 cm −1 , determined by the selected electronic filter bandwidths), high sensitivity (within a factor of ~ 2 of the quantum noise limit), high spatial resolution owing to very small coherent field of view (FoV), and cost-effective compact instrumental dimension.

Abstract:High-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) is a powerful tool for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing. The current HSRL technique often requires a single longitudinal mode laser as the transmitter to accomplish the spectral discrimination of the aerosol and molecular scattering conveniently. However, single-mode laser is cumbersome and has very strict requirements for ambient stability, making the HSRL instrument not so robust in many cases. In this paper, a new HSRL concept, called generalized HSRL technique with a multimode laser (MML-gHSRL), is proposed, which can work using a multimode laser. The MML-gHSRL takes advantage of the period characteristic of the spectral function of the interferometric spectral discrimination filter (ISDF) thoroughly. By matching the free spectral range of the ISDF with the mode interval of the multimode laser, fine spectral discrimination for the lidar return from each longitudinal mode can be realized. Two common ISDFs, i.e., the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) and field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), are introduced to develop the MML-gHSRL, and their performance is quantitatively analyzed and compared. The MML-gHSRL is a natural but significant generalization for the current HSRL technique based on the IDSF. It is potential that this technique would be a good entrance to future HSRL developments, especially in airborne and satellite-borne aerosol remote sensing applications.
Ultra-High Resolution Portable Dual-channel Laser Heterodyne Radiometer

Abstract:An integrated portable, dual-channel all-fibered laser heterodyne radiometer (portable dc-LHR) with a high spectral resolution (0.0044 cm(-1)) for simultaneous remote sensing of atmospheric dry-air column-averaged mole fraction of CO2 and CH4 (X-CO2 and X-CH4) has been developed. Sunlight is modulated by a dual-channel fiber optical switch and mixed with two laser beams, which were step-scanned across two strong absorption features centered at 1603.59-1657.39 nm, respectively. Digital lock-in amplifiers (DLIAs) are designed to demodulate the laser heterodyne signal, while self-design interferometric devices are used to monitor laser wavelength. A forward model based on relative transmittance in a narrow band and an optimal estimation inversion algorithm are used for data inversion. The portable instrument was carried out in a field campaign in Dachaidan (Qinghai Province, China, 37.744 degrees N, 95.342 degrees E), together with co-located Aircore and EM27/SUN measurements, in August 2020. The retrieval uncertainties of portable dc-LHR X-CO2 and X-CH4 are 0.9 ppm and 3.4 ppb, respectively. Comparison in X-CO2 and X-CH4 observations between portable dc-LHR and EM27/SUN show a good agreement.

Abstract:A fully transportable laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR), involving a flexible polycrystalline mid-infrared (PIR) fiber-coupling system and operating around 8 µm, was characterized and optimized with the help of a calibrated high temperature blackbody source to simulate solar radiation. Compared to a mid-IR free-space sunlight coupling system, usually used in a current LHR, such a fiber-coupling system configuration makes the mid-infrared (MIR) LHR fully transportable. The noise sources, heterodyne signal, and SNR of the MIR LHR were analyzed, and the optimum operating local oscillator (LO) photocurrent was experimentally obtained. The spectroscopic performance of the MIR LHR was finally evaluated. This work demonstrated that the developed fully transportable MIR LHR could be used for ground-based atmospheric sounding measurements of multiple trace gases in the atmospheric column. In addition, it also has high potential for applications on spacecraft or on an airborne platform.

Abstract:A near-infrared broadband (1500–1640 nm) laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) with a tunable external-cavity diode laser as the local oscillator is developed and the relative transmittance, which represents the absolute relationship between the measured spectral signals and the atmospheric transmittance, is derived. High-resolution (0.0087 cm-1) LHR spectra in the spectral region of 6248.5–6256 cm−1 were recorded for the observation of atmospheric CO2. Combined with the relative transmittance, the preprocessed measured LHR spectra, the optimal estimation method, and the Python scripts for computational atmospheric spectroscopy, the column-averaged dry-air mixing ratio of CO2 of 409.09 ± 8 ppmv in Dunkirk, France on February 23, 2019, was retrieved, which is consistent with GOSAT and TCCON data. The near-infrared external-cavity LHR demonstrated in the present work has a high potential for use in developing a robust, broadband, unattended, and all-fiber LHR for spacecraft and ground-based atmospheric sensing that offers more channel selection for inversion.

Abstract:Laser heterodyne technology is a highly sensitive laser spectroscopy technique which can be integrated. It has the potential to develop a compact ground or satellite based radiometer for Earth observation and astronomy. Based on the laser heterodyne technology, a set of high resolution laser heterodyne detection system was established together with a solar tracker. The spectral resolution of the system is about 0.006 cm(-1). Sunlight is superimposed with infrared laser light in a nonlinear detector. The signals pass through an electronics filter and a square-law detector, then the high-resolution heterodyne signal is extracted. In terms of the field measurement, Langley-Plot Calibration method was used to calibrate the system first, then total atmosphere transmittance of mid-infrared was measured. The calibration constant and corresponding to the atmospheric total optical thickness were presented. According to the comparison between the results of heterodyne measurement system and that of software MORTRAN5. 0 calculation, good agreement was obtained. It is shown that the system has high spectral resolution which can be applied to atmospheric transmittance measurement. Besides, the system also shows potential applications in atmospheric sciences, astronomy, laser propagation through the atmosphere and other areas.
Simultaneous Remote Sensing of Multiple Atmospheric Gases (CO2, CH4, and H2O) Based on an All-Fiber Laser Heterodyne Spectroradiometer

Abstract:We report an all-fiber, near-infrared laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) that uses two distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers as local oscillators. This scheme allows the retrieval of the column abundances of multiple atmospheric gases of CH4, CO2, and H2O. To improve the detection efficiency, we operated the two DFB diode lasers emitting at 1653 and 1568 nm simultaneously within one scanning cycle. The duration of one scanning cycle was experimentally determined to be 2 s. An atmospheric transmission spectrum of multi-gas was observed within 20 s after averaging ten times. This approach has simplified the sensing system and reduced the probability of being affected by the rapid and random fluctuation of solar radiation due to clouds. We regulated the laser power, and hence, the amplitudes of background heterodyne signals excited by the two local oscillators, to accurately measure the transmission spectrum of each gas species. The results of the sun-tracking observations of this LHR sensor show good agreement with the data taken simultaneously by the GOSAT satellite.

Abstract:Quantitative measurements of atmospheric aerosol optical properties are required for studies of the Earth’s radiation budget and climate change. Taking advantage of the broad spectrum of the Cabannes-Brillouin scattering from atmospheric molecules, the high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) technique employs a narrow spectral filter to reject the aerosol Mie scattering component in the lidar return signals. Therefore, an HSRL can directly measure the extinction and backscatter coefficient as well as the lidar ratio. Since the backscattering signal is proportional to 1/λ4, it presents high requirements for the spectral filter to build a near-infrared HSRL. The atomic/molecular absorption filters are limited by the wavelength and it is also challenging for Fabry-Perot interferometers (FPI) due to their small field of view(FOV). The field-widened Michelson interferometer, which has a large FOV, is considered to be a good candidate for the spectral filter of near-infrared HSRL. A polarized near-infrared HSRL instrument, which employs a field-widened Michelson interferometer as the spectral filter, is under development at the Zhejiang University (ZJU), China. In this paper, the methodology and design process of the instrument will be described in detail. The capability of the HSRL in determining the properties of the atmosphere will be addressed. The retrieval of the aerosol optical properties, such as extinction-to-backscatter ratio and aerosol depolarization ratio, will be presented. Sensitivity of the aerosol retrieval to errors in characterizing the spectral filter will also be investigated.

Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.

Abstract:The mid-infrared (MIR) laser heterodyne spectroscopy with high sensitivity and high spectral resolution is a remote sensing technique for detecting atmospheric trace gas's column concentration and vertical concentration profile by using a narrow linewidth laser as a local oscillator (LO) and amplifying the weak absorption signal. This paper proposes a new instrument structure based on the current laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR). A direct absorption spectrum system was introduced in the laser heterodyne system to realize the selection of working wavelength and frequency calibration. A compact IR blackbody source EMIRS200 was used as the broadband radiation source to replace sunlight and verify and analyze the laser heterodyne system. It provides a new method for the next system integration of LHR. A MIR-wide tuning LHR proof-of-concept (PoC) system was developed, and the basic parameters of the system were tested and analyzed. The system used an 8,um external cavity quantum cascade laser (EC-QCL) as the LO and an IR blackbody source, EMIRS200, as the radiation source. After testing and analyzing the basic parameters of the system, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) (similar to 120) and heterodyne conversion efficiency (-0. 006) of the system were measured. The stability time of EC-QCL measured was at least 133s using Allan variance analysis, so it is very suitable for laser heterodyne spectrum acquisition. The limit of detection (LoD) of the 16 minimum volume fraction of the direct absorption spectrum system was 2. 312 /10 (8), which can meet the requirements of highly sensitive detection of atmospheric CH4 and realize the selection of working wavelength and frequency calibration of the heterodyne system. Finally, the high-resolution heterodyne absorption spectrum of CH4 at 8 mu m was obtained by using the established LHR PoC system and compared with the direct absorption spectra of CH4 at 8 mu m. Finally, the spectral resolution parameters of the system were fitted, and the high spectral resolution of the LHR PoC system was verified, which can satisfy the high-resolution laser heterodyne spectrum measurement under the condition of narrow laser linewidth. Experimental results show that the direct absorption spectrum system can be used to select working wavelength and calibrate the frequency of the laser heterodyne system. The compact IR blackbody source EMIRS200 can be used to optimize the structure of LHR to realize the analysis and verification of the laser heterodyne system, which provides an experimental basis for further application in the measurement of multi-component gas spectrum in the actual atmosphere and expands the application of LHR in the field of high-precision remote sensing.
Autonomous field measurements of CO2 in the atmospheric column with the miniaturized laser heterodyne radiometer (Mini-LHR)

Abstract:We present column CO2 measurements taken by the passive miniaturized laser heterodyne radiometer (Mini-LHR) at 1611.51 nm at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. The Mini-LHR was operated autonomously, during the month of May 2013 at this site, working in tandem with an AERONET sun photometer that measures aerosol optical depth at 15-min intervals during daylight hours. Laser heterodyne radiometry has been used since the 1970s to measure atmospheric gases such as ozone, water vapor, methane, ammonia, chlorine monoxide, and nitrous oxide. This iteration of the technology utilizes distributed feedback lasers to produce a low-cost, small, portable sensor that has potential for global deployment. Applications of this instrument include supplementation of existing monitoring networks to provide denser global coverage, providing validation for larger satellite missions, and targeting regions of carbon flux uncertainty. Also presented here are preliminary retrieval analysis and the performance analysis that demonstrate that the Mini-LHR responds extremely well to changes in the atmospheric absorption.
Simultaneous detection of multi-component greenhouse gases based on an all-fibered near-infrared single-channel frequency-division multiplexing wavelength-modulated laser heterodyne radiometer

Abstract:The performance of an all fibered near-infrared (NIR) single-channel frequency-division multiplexing wavelength-modulated laser heterodyne radiometer (FDM WM-LHR) is demonstrated in ground-based solar occultation mode. The system modulates the laser through the high-frequency signal output by the lock-in amplifier to replace the traditional chopper modulation, making it more stable and compact. Moreover, personal computers are used to simultaneously control the operating current of two distributed feedback (DFB) lasers through a general purpose interface bus-universal serial bus (GPIB-USB), thereby controlling the central wavelength of the laser at 1602.88 and 1653.727 nm, which serve as the absorption lines for the local oscillator detection of the two main greenhouse gases: CO2 and CH4. Firstly, the performance of traditional laser heterodyne radiometer (LHR) and the wavelength-modulated laser heterodyne radiometer (WM-LHR) are compared. The results reveal that both the radiometers have an optimized 2f signal when the modulation amplitude m = 2.2. In the actual measurement, 0.25 V and 0.21 V are selected as the modulation amplitude of the laser for the detection of CH4 and CO2. Under the same experimental parameters, at 1602.88 nm, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the 2f signal of CO2 in the WM-LHR system is 500.24, while that for the direct absorption signal (DAS) of CO2 in the traditional LHR system is 337.94. At 1653.727 nm, the SNR for the 2f signal in the WM-LHR system and the DAS of CH4 in the traditional LHR system are 512.04 and 389.58, respectively. Obviously, the SNR for the WM-LHR system is greatly improved. Finally, the application of frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) technology in the WM-LHR system is discussed. The modulation frequency of the two lasers should be appropriately selected to avoid interference between the signals. Overall, the results show that the FDM WM-LHR system can not only detect multiple gases simultaneously but also reduce the implementation cost of the ground-based radiometer. In addition, this study provides useful insights on planetary atmosphere exploration.
