Abstract:Blue nanocrystal perovskite LEDs have traditionally lagged behind their red and green cousins. Here, we discuss the reasons for this lag and propose solutions to these problems, producing high efficiency blue perovskite LEDs. We demonstrate the NiOx, a transport material in one of the highest performing devices to date, reduces the performance of nanocrystals near to the interface. By replacing it with an alternative transport structure, we show that the nanocrystal emission is unperturbed. We then build full LEDs out of this transport structure, increasing the EQE from 0.03% to 0.50%, the highest for inorganic perovskite nanocrystals at this wavelength. We further show that the benefits of this transport structure relax as the energetics redshift, as our blue-green devices match those from literature. These results are a useful step forward towards commercially relevant perovskite LEDs.

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes utilizing perovskite nanocrystals have generated strong interest in the past several years, with green and red devices showing high efficiencies. Blue devices, however, have lagged significantly behind. Here, it is shown that the device architecture plays a key role in this lag and that NiOx , a transport layer in one of the highest efficiency devices to date, causes a significant reduction in perovskite luminescence lifetime. An alternate transport layer structure which maintains robust nanocrystal emission is proposed. Devices with this architecture show external quantum efficiencies of 0.50% at 469 nm, seven times higher than state-of-the-art devices at that wavelength. Finally, it is demonstrated that this architecture enables efficient devices across the entire blue-green portion of the spectrum. The improvements demonstrated here open the door to efficient blue perovskite light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Perovskite nanomaterials have been highly thought as next-generation light emitters after recent development, owing to their benefits of simple synthesis, low-cost, large-area, and wide color gamut. Encouragingly, the external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of green, red, and near-infrared perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have exceeded more than 20%. However, the performance of the blue PeLEDs is still lower than other analogs, which seriously limits the applications of PeLEDs for future full-color displays. Here, we reviewed the advances in blue perovskite NCs and their applications in blue PeLEDs. Then, promising blue perovskite emitters and strategies to fabricate highly efficient blue PeLEDs based on perovskite NCs are investigated and highlighted. Moreover, we point out the main challenges in blue perovskite NCs LEDs including low electroluminescence efficiency (EL), spectral instability, the difficulty of charge injection, and device optimization. Meanwhile, the perspectives for the further development of blue PeLEDs are presented.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) show promises for next-generation displays owing to their excellent luminescent properties and low cost. Despite substantial progress with green- and red-emitting devices, the development of efficient blue perovskite LEDs has lagged behind. Here we demonstrate efficient blue perovskite LEDs based on a mixed two-dimensional–three-dimensional perovskite and a multifunctional ionic additive that enables control over the reduced-dimensional phases, non-radiative recombination channels and spectral stability. We report a series of devices that emit efficient electroluminescence from mixed bromide/chloride quasi-three-dimensional regions, with external quantum efficiencies of up to 21.4% (at a luminance of 22 cd m –2 and emission peak at 483 nm), 13.2% (at a luminance of 2.0 cd m – 2 and emission peak at 474 nm) and 7.3% (at a luminance of 6 cd m –2 and emission peak at 464 nm). Devices show a nearly 30-fold increase in operational stability compared with control LEDs, with a half-lifetime of 129 min at an initial luminance of 100 cd m –2 . Our findings demonstrate the performance of blue perovskite LEDs close to that of state-of-the-art blue organic LEDs and inorganic quantum dot LEDs and provide a new approach to design multifunctional molecules to boost the performance of perovskite optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Flat panel displays enjoy 100 billion-dollar markets with significant penetration in daily life, which require efficient, color-saturated blue, green, and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The recently emerged halide perovskites have demonstrated low-cost and outstanding performance for potential LED applications. However, the performance of blue perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) lags far behind red and green cousins, particularly for color coordinates approaching (0.131, 0.046) that fulfill the Rec. 2020 specification for blue emitters. Here, a high-efficiency, lead-free perovskite, CsEuBr3, is reported that exhibits bright blue exciton emission centered at 448 nm with a color coordinates of (0.15, 0.04), contributed from Eu-5d→Eu-4f/Br-4p transition with an optical band gap of 2.85 eV. Further optical characterizations reveal its short excited-state lifetime of 151 ns, excellent exciton diffusion diffusivity of 0.0227 cm2 s−1, and high quantum yield of ≈69%. Inspired by these findings, deep-blue PeLEDs based on all-vacuum processing methods, which have been demonstrated as the most successful approach for the organic LED industry, are constructed. The devices show a maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.5% with an operating half-lifetime of 50 mins at an initial brightness of 15.9 cd m−2. It is anticipated that this work will inspire further research on lanthanide-based perovskites for next-generation LED applications.

Abstract:Despite heavy research, blue perovskite nanocrystal LEDs have struggled to match the high efficiencies of their red and green cousins, particularly at wavelengths blue enough to meet the NTSC blue standard. One of the most critical problems is the low photoluminescence yield of the nanocrystals in thin films. Recently, manganese doping has been shown to increase the photoluminescence yield of the perovskite even as a decay pathway to a long-lived emissive state on the manganese ion is introduced. Here, we employ a two-step synthetic approach to carefully tune the manganese doping to increase the blue photoluminescence while preventing significant manganese emission, allowing for blue perovskite LEDs with quantum efficiencies over 2% that meet the NTSC standard. Manganese doping increases the photoluminescence yield and lifetime, reduces trap states, and makes the dots more monodisperse, reducing the emission bandwidth. Finally, we utilize perovskite nanocrystal downconverters to build an all-perovskite white LED.
Color-Stable and High-Efficiency Blue Perovskite Nanocrystal Light-Emitting Diodes via Monovalent Copper Ion Lowering Lead Defects

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes using metal halide perovskite (PeLEDs) exhibit a strong potential for emerging display technologies due to their unique optoelectronic characteristics. However, for blue emission PeLEDs, there remains a huge challenge to achieve high performance, an issue that has been addressed in their red and green counterparts. The community is circumventing the challenges in synthesizing stable, high-quantum-efficiency, and low-defect-density blue emitters. Here, a facile strategy that replaces Pb by adding a monovalent ion Cu+, in this case into CsPbClBr2 perovskite, is carried out. This decreases the Pb dangling bonds and increases the radiative recombination for the enhancement of blue emission. The nanoparticles obtained by this method maintain a blue emission at 479 nm. The photoluminescence quantum yield is 2 times higher than the pristine analogue. The corresponding perovskite nanocrystal (PNC) LEDs achieve stable electroluminescence spectrum at high brightness. Simultaneously, the optimal blue PNC LEDs obtain the maximum values of luminance and external quantum efficiency of 1537 cd m-2 and 3.78%, respectively. And the device realizes typical blue light CIE chromaticity coordinates of (0.098, 0.123). Our work reveals that the substitution of Pb by heterovalent ions significantly decreases nanocrystal defects, which will pave the way of perovskite LEDs for practical applications in the future.

Abstract:Blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) are essential in pixels of perovskite displays, while their progress lags far behind their red and green counterparts. Here, we focus on recent advances of blue PeLEDs and systematically review the noteworthy strategies, which are categorized into compositional engineering, dimensional control, and size confinement, on optimizing microstructures, energy landscapes, and charge behaviors of wide-bandgap perovskite emitters (bandgap >2.5 eV). Moreover, the stability of perovskite blue emitters and related devices is discussed. In the end, we propose a technical roadmap for the fabrication of state-of-the-art blue PeLEDs to chase and achieve comparable performance with the other two primary-color devices.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites show significant promise for light-emitting diodes (LEDs) because of superior optoelectronic properties, such as direct band gap, excellent mobilities, and high color purity. Blue perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs), however, still suffer from inferior performance compared with green and near-infrared counterparts. Here, we report a highly efficient sky-blue PeLED operating with an external quantum efficiency of 13.8% based on a quasi-two-dimensional structure. The outstanding efficiency arises from simultaneously suppressing both triplet and trap-assisted nonradiative energy loss via using a ligand with high-triplet-energy and dual-functional passivation groups. Abstract:The emergence of inorganic–organic hybrid perovskites, a unique class of solution-processable crystalline semiconductors, provides new opportunities for large-area, low-cost and colour-saturated light-emitting diodes (LEDs) ideal for display and solid-state lighting applications 1 . However, the performance of blue perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) 2 – 11 is far inferior to that of their near-infrared, red and green counterparts 12 – 19 , strongly limiting the practicality of the PeLED technology. Here, we demonstrate blue PeLEDs emitting at 483 nm with colour coordinates of (0.094, 0.184) and operating with a peak external quantum efficiency of up to 9.5% at a luminance of 54 cd m –2 . The devices have a T 50 lifetime of 250 s for an initial brightness of 100 cd m –2 . The efficient blue electroluminescence originates from a structure of quantum-confined perovskite nanoparticles embedded within quasi-two-dimensional phases with higher bandgaps, prepared by an antisolvent processing scheme. Our work paves the way towards high-performance PeLEDs in the blue region.

Abstract:Substantial progress has been made in blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). In this review, the strategies for high-performance blue PeLEDs are described, and the main focus is on the optimization of the optical and electrical properties of perovskites. In detail, the fundamental device working principles are first elucidated, followed by a systematical discussion of the key issues for achieving high-quality perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) and quasi-2D perovskites. These involve ligand optimization and metal doping in enhancing the carrier transport and reducing the traps of perovskite NCs, as well as the perovskite phase modulation and defect passivation in improving energy transfer and emission efficiency of quasi-2D perovskites. The strategies for efficient 3D mixed-halide perovskite and lead-free perovskite blue LEDs are then briefly introduced. After that, other strategies, including effective charge transport layer, efficient perovskite emission system, and effective device architecture for high light outcoupling efficiency, are further discussed to boost the blue PeLED performances. Meanwhile, the testing standard of blue PeLED lifetime is suggested to enable the direct comparisons of the device operational stability. Finally, challenges and future directions for blue PeLEDs are addressed.

Highly efficient blue light-emitting diodes with tunable wavelength using vertically graded bandgap quasi-2D perovskite films

Abstract:Abstract Metal halide perovskite materials have emerged as a unique class of solution process compatible semiconductors and alluring candidates for high-performance optoelectronic applications1,2,3, especially light-emitting diodes (LEDs), owing to high quantum efficiency, facile color tunability, narrow emission line widths, as well as cost-effectiveness4,5,6. Despite of the great successes on green and red perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs), the advancement of external quantum efficiency (EQE) of blue PeLEDs still lags far behind those of green and red PeLEDs7,8. Here, we demonstrate color-tunable blue PeLEDs devices with high EQE of 16.1% and 10% for emission wavelengths of 472 nm and 461 nm, respectively. The efficient tunable wavelength electroluminescence (EL) and high (EQE) originate from the optimization of the recombination zone position to reach the charge injection balance in the vertically graded bandgap quasi-2D perovskite materials. Under the synergetic effect of lead chloride (PbCl2) doping and propane-1,3-diammonium (PDABr2) incorporation, the vertically graded bandgap perovskite materials can be prepared by the self-regulation of the reduced-dimensional perovskite during the annealing process. Our work here has significantly elevated the performance of the current blue PeLEDs. It opens up a novel avenue to fabricate high-performance blue PeLEDs that can match up the performance of the green and red PeLEDs for future lighting and display applications.
Efficient Perovskite Nanograin Light‐Emitting Diodes in Green‐to‐Blue Gamut with co‐Additive Engineering

Abstract:Perovskite nanograins exceeding the Bohr exciton diameter show great potential for high‐performance light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) owing to their bandgap homogeneity, spatial charge confinement, and nonlocal interaction. However, it is challenging to directly synthesize proper nanograins along with reduced crystal defects on functional substrate, and the corresponding high‐efficiency perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) have rarely been reported. In this study, we perform crystallization modulation for perovskites with an effective co‐additive system, including lithium bromide, p‐fluorophenethylammonium bromide, and 18‐crown‐6. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the proposed co‐additive system could synergistically retard perovskite crystallization and reduce crystal defects. Consequently, high‐quality perovskite nanograin solids (∼ 22.8 nm) are obtained with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (∼ 88%). These superior optical properties contribute to developing efficient green PeLEDs with a champion external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 28.4% and an average EQE of 27.1%. The co‐additive system can be universally applied to mixed‐halide perovskite nanograin LED, presenting a maximum EQE of 24.4%, 21.6%, 17.5%, and 11.1% for the blue device at 496, 488, 478, and 472 nm, respectively, along with a narrow spectral linewidth (17–14 nm) and stable color. Abstract:Quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) promise a new generation of efficient, low-cost, large-area, and flexible electroluminescent devices. However, the inferior performance of green and blue QD-LEDs is hindering the commercialization of QD-LEDs in display and solid-state lighting. Here, we demonstrate best-performing green and blue QD-LEDs with ~100% conversion of the injected charge carriers into emissive excitons. Key to this success is eliminating electron leakage at the organic/inorganic interface by using hole-transport polymers with low electron affinity and reduced energetic disorder. Our devices exhibit record-high peak external quantum efficiencies (28.7% for green, 21.9% for blue), exceptionally high efficiencies in wide ranges of luminance, and unprecedented stability (T95 lifetime: 580,000 h for green, 4,400 h for blue). The overall performance surpasses previously reported solution-processed green and blue LEDs.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have aroused tremendous interest in the past several years for their promising applications in display and lighting. However, the development of blue perovskite light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) still lags far behind that of their green and red cousins due to the difficulty in obtaining high‐quality blue perovskite emissive layers. In this study, a simple approach is conceived to improve the emission and electrical properties of blue perovskites. By introducing an alkali metal ion to occupy some sites of peripheral suspended organic ligands, the nonradiative recombination is suppressed, and, consequently, blue CsPb(Br/Cl)3 nanocrystals with a high photoluminescence quantum efficiency of 38.4% are obtained. The introduced K+ acts as a new type of metal ligand, which not only suppresses nonradiative pathways but also improves the charge carrier transport of the perovskite nanocrystals. With further engineering of the device structure to balance the charge injection rate, a spectrally stable and efficient blue PeLED with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.96% at the emission peak of 477 nm is fabricated.

Abstract:Blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have shown external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of more than 10%; however, devices that emit in the true blue—those that accord with the emission wavelength required for Rec. 2100 primary blue —have so far been limited to EQEs of ~6%. We focused here on true blue emitting CsPbBr 3 colloidal nanocrystals (c-NCs), finding in early studies that they suffer from a high charge injection barrier, a problem exacerbated in films containing multiple layers of nanocrystals. We introduce a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) active layer that improves charge injection. We identified a bifunctional capping ligand that simultaneously enables the self-assembly of CsPbBr 3 c-NCs while passivating surface traps. We report, as a result, SAM-based LEDs exhibit a champion EQE of ~12% [CIE of (0.132, 0.069) at 4.0 V with a luminance of 11 cd/m 2 ], and 10-fold–enhanced operating stability relative to the best previously reported Rec. 2100-blue perovskite LEDs.

Blue Perovskite Nanocrystal Light-Emitting Diodes: Overcoming RuddlesdenPopper Fault-Induced Nonradiative Recombination via Post-Halide Exchange

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have gained traction as emitters owing to their excellent optical properties, such as facile bandgap tuning, defect tolerance, and high color purity. Nevertheless, blue-emitting MHP light-emitting diodes (LEDs) show only marginal progress in device efficiency compared with green and red LEDs. Herein, the origin of the drop in efficiency of blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) by mixing halides and the genesis of Ruddlesden-Popper faults (RPFs) in CsPbBrX Cl3-X nanocrystals is investigated. Using scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, the authors have found that RPFs induce possible nonradiative recombination pathways owing to the high chloride vacancy concentration nearby. The authors further confirm that the blue-emitting PNCs do not show RPFs post-halide exchange in the CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. By introducing the post-halide exchange treatment, high-efficiency pure blue-emitting (464 nm) PNC-based LEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 2.1% and excellent spectral stability with a full-width at half-maximum of 14 nm are obtained.

Abstract:Metal halide perovskites have received much attention for their application in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the past several years. Rapid progress has been made in efficient green, red, and near-infrared perovskite LEDs. However, the development of blue perovskite LEDs is still lagging far behind. Here, we report efficient sky-blue perovskite LEDs by rearranging low-dimensional phase distribution in quasi-2D perovskites. We incorporated sodium ions into the mixed-Cl/Br quasi-2D perovskites with phenylethylammonium as the organic spacer and cesium lead halide as the inorganic framework. The inclusion of the sodium ion was found to significantly reduce the formation of the n = 1 phase, which was dominated by nonradiative transition, and increase the formation of other small-n phases for efficient exciton energy transfer. By managing the phase distribution, a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.7% was achieved in the sky-blue perovskite LED, with a stable emission peak at 488 nm. Further optimizing the phase distribution and film morphology with Pb content, we demonstrated the sky-blue devices with the average EQE approaching 10%. Abstract:The lack of highly efficient blue-emitting perovskite nanocrystals limits their development for optoelectronic applications. In article number 2001698, Bartomeu Monserrat, Shuyu Zhang, and co-workers develop blue-emitting neodymium-doped CsPbBr3 nanocrystals with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and narrow spectral width. First principles calculations reveal the microscopic mechanisms for the blueshift of photoluminescence and the enhancement of PLQY upon doping.
