Abstract:An adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) scheme for joint polarization and phase recovery is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this scheme, the noise covariance is estimated adaptively along with the recursive of KF. The simulation results show that the tuning parameter Q can adaptively converge to an optimal value in wide ranges of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), polarization rotation frequency, and laser linewidth. As a result, the proposed AKF has less OSNR sensitivity penalty, better polarization tracking capability, and laser linewidth tolerance compared with extended Kalman filter (EKF) with fixed Q value. Finally, in the experiment of 16 quadrature amplitude modulation system, AKF also shows a better polarization tracking capability than the EKF. Abstract:An adaptive and joint carrier recovery scheme is proposed based on adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) for 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signals. The tuning parameter Q is adaptively adjusted according to the innovation vector under dynamic operating condition. Consequently, the proposed scheme can simultaneously estimate frequency offset (FO) and phase noise with excellent performance in estimation accuracy, estimation range and tracking capability as well as linewidth tolerance, especially in dynamic frequency offset scenarios. The proposed scheme is also demonstrated in 14GS/s dual-polarization 16 quadrature amplitude modulation experimental systems. Compared with conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF) and QPSK partitioning, the proposed scheme offers better estimation accuracy and adaptive configuration capability of the tuning parameter.

Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on pilot symbols aiding adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) for phase noise and polarization cross-talk is proposed and investigated via numerical simulation and experimental demonstration. In the proposed scheme, the optimizing parameter Q is adaptively adjusted according to signal parameters or channel conditions. This improvement avoids the drawback of conventional extended Kalman filter (EKF), and its performance is strongly dependent on Q. Another improvement is that the convergence speed of AKF is improved. Pilot quadrature phase shift keyin (QPSK) symbols are inserted into 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals periodically. Besides accelerating convergence speed, the employment of pilot symbols also improves the tracking capability of AKF. The format ratio between pilot symbols and payload symbols is suggested under different system environments, for instance, optical signal-to-noise rate, polarization rotation frequency drift rate, and laser linewidth. With the proposed scheme, it has excellent tolerance to initial parameter Q and dramatically improves the performances in convergence speed, polarization rotation frequency drift rate tracking, and carrier phase recovery. Both the numerical simulation and experimental demonstration achieve convergence improvement for around 40 times than the original AKF. Additionally, the improvements in tracking ability are also demonstrated.

Abstract:A joint compensation scheme based on cascaded Kalman filter is proposed, which can implement polarization tracking, channel equalization, frequency offset, and phase noise compensation simultaneously. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can not only compensate multiple channel impairments simultaneously but also improve the polarization tracking capacity and accelerate the convergence speed. The scheme has up to eight times faster convergence speed compared with radius-directed equalizer (RDE) + Max-FFT (maximum fast Fourier transform) + BPS (blind phase search) and can track up polarization rotation 60 times and 15 times faster than that of RDE + Max-FFT + BPS and CMMA (cascaded multimodulus algorithm) + Max-FFT + BPS, respectively. Abstract:A flexible polarization demultiplexing method based on an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) is proposed in which the process noise covariance has been estimated adaptively. The proposed method may significantly improve the adaptive capability of an extended Kalman filter (EKF) by adaptively estimating the unknown process noise covariance. Compared to the conventional EKF, the proposed method can avoid the tedious and time consuming parameter-by-parameter tuning operations. The effectiveness of this method is confirmed experimentally in 128 Gb/s 16QAM polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) coherent optical transmission systems. The results illustrate that our proposed AKF has a better tracking accuracy and a faster convergence (about 4 times quicker) compared to a conventional algorithm with optimal process noise covariance.

Abstract:We propose a noise adaptive Kalman filter for joint polarization tracking and channel equalization using cascaded covariance matching. With the process noise covariance (Q) and the measurement noise covariance (R) estimated in a cascaded manner, the proposed Kalman filter scheme can be implemented in adaptive mode. The experimental results demonstrate that in wide range of OSNR and polarization rotation, the scheme can adaptively configure noise covariance parameters and consequently can achieve optimal performance even in long transmission cases. Besides, the scheme is more robust against the initial errors in Q and R compared to nonadaptive filter and R/Q-adaptive algorithms with the allowable initial values of Q and R within 6 and 9 magnitudes, respectively.

Abstract:The challenge of carrier recovery for digitally phase modulated, suppressed-carrier signals has been the target of much attention in mobile radio system design for many years. In this paper, a new open-loop all-digital carrier recovery method for Multiple Phase Shift Keying (MPSK) which is based on random data modulation is presented. This method uses Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) along with peak detection to estimate frequency offset and uses Kalman filter to track phase. Its complexity is very low, and it is also easily implemented with digital hardware. The simulation results show that the estimator using this method achieves good performance under the condition of large frequency offset and low signal noise ratio (SNR).

Abstract:The carrier recovery is one key technique in the demodulation of high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals. A carrier recovery algorithm which switches between multi-threshold polarity decision mode and decision directed mode according to the standard deviation of the frequency of numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is proposed. The proposed algorithm can detect a proper time for the mode switch to yield lower steady state error. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of blind carrier recovery.

Abstract:A dispersion immune and dynamic polarization recovery scheme based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) is proposed for Stokes vector Kramers-Kronig (SVKK) receiver. In the transmitter, a carrier is aligned at the edge of the data-carrying signal spectrum in one of the two polarizations. In the receiver, the signal detection is implemented based on Stokes vector receiver (SVR). The proposed dynamic polarization demultiplexing scheme is transparent to modulation formats and can track dynamic polarization rotation up to 30 Mrad/s. Furthermore, the proposed scheme is immune to chromatic dispersion.

Abstract:A joint and robust frequency offset (FO) and phase noise tracking scheme using self-learning Kalman filter is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. In our scheme, a self-learning Kalman filter based on kurtosis error is used to track FO and phase noise simultaneously in a decision-free manner. Then, a mean-shift clustering-assisted maximum likelihood estimator is used for residual phase noise compensation. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme has advantages in FO estimation accuracy, OSNR sensitivity penalty, and FO jitter rate tolerance and nonlinearity tolerance, compared with the conventional FO and phase noise estimation scheme. With 7% FEC threshold, the proposed scheme can tolerate FO jitter rate up to 10 MHz for 16QAM, which is around 100 times and 20 times than that of VVPE1 +BPS and FFT+UCPE. With 1 dB OSNR penalty, the linewidth tolerance of the proposed scheme is 300 kHz for 64QAM, which is around 30 times and 5 times than that of FFT+UCPE+ML and FFT+ VVPE2. The proposed scheme also shows excellent nonlinearity tolerance over wide launched power, and it provides around 0.4 dB and 0.2 dB Q-factor improvement over VVPE1+ VVPE2, VVPE1 +BPS for 16QAM, respectively. The 28GBaud PDM 16QAM experimental results also indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the rest of tested scheme under both back-to-back and fiber transmission cases. With optimal launched power, the proposed scheme can provide around 0.2 dB, 0.4 dB, and 0.7 dB Q-factor improvement over VVPE1 +BPS, FFT+UCPE, and VVPE1+ VVPE2 after 915 km fiber transmission, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that a joint and modulation transparent with robust nonlinearity and FO jitter rate tolerance is proposed and demonstrated for 64QAM.

Abstract:We propose a joint polarization tracking and channel equalization scheme based on radius-directed linear Kalman filter (RD-LKF) by introducing the butterfly finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter in our previously proposed RD-LKF method. Along with the fast polarization tracking, it can also simultaneously compensate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) effects including residual chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. Compared with the conventional radius-directed equalizer (RDE) algorithm, it is demonstrated experimentally that three times faster convergence speed, one order of magnitude better tracking capability, and better BER performance is obtained in polarization division multiplexing 16 quadrature amplitude modulation system. Besides, the influences of the algorithm parameters on the convergence and the tracking performance are investigated by numerical simulation.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a universal and blind polarization-state tracking scheme for M-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals based on a decision-free radius-directed linear Kalman filter (RD-LKF). The polarization tracking performance is investigated through simulation and experiments for both quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) and 16-QAM signals. The influence of the filter parameters on the static polarization demultiplexing performance and dynamic tracking capability are discussed via simulation. The optimization strategy of the filter parameters in modulation-format-independent scenarios is proposed and simulations are carried out to evaluate the polarization demultiplexing penalty for QPSK, 16QAM, and hybrid QPSK/16QAM signals. Finally, the proposed decision-free RD-LKF is experimentally compared to the respective algorithms of constant modulus algorithm and multimodulus algorithm for QPSK and 16-QAM and the advantage of ultrafast polarization tracking ability is confirmed.
