Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:Optical microfibers and nanofibers have diameters close to or smaller than the wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physical drawing of glass or polymer materials, these tiny fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, significant surface field enhancement, and large and abnormal waveguide dispersion, which bestow them with a variety of applications in fields ranging from optical communication, laser technology, sensors, nonlinear optics, and quantum op-tics.

Abstract:Short thin cylinders can be the basic part of mesoscopic actuators powered by laser tweezers. We demonstrate that micro size birefringent colloidal coins can be positioned translationally and orientationally in advance of the prediction of current theoretical modeling. Circularly polarized laser tweezers keep driving the rotation of the microdisk. Viscous flow between a hard wall and a microdisk excites the disk to an oscillation orbit. These disks can be fabricated via solidification of emulsion drops by tuning temperature or solvent concentration so that molecules in the drop assuming a smectic phase.

Abstract:A novel micro-fabrication technology using optical radiation pressure is presented. A simulation program has been written and simulation results have demonstrated that micro silica or diamond particles, trapped by focused laser beam, could be used as micro-fabrication tools for nanometer manufacturing. An experiment setup for laser trapping has been established and Silica particles, with diameter of 8 μm, has been successfully trapped in water and arbitrary-shaped diamond particles, whose size is about 3-8 μm, has been trapped and rotated as micro-fabrication tools. When trapped rigidity micro-particles tools was controlled by laser beam, the work stage was horizontally moved repeatedly so that a machining trace of 2nm on work piece has been attained.

Abstract:We demonstrate an optofluidic variable-focus microlens formed by a solid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) meniscus channel wall and a tunable liquid lens body. A novel method for in situ fabrication of the meniscus channel wall is developed by introducing liquid PDMS prepolymer into a microchannel followed by curing. Three-light manipulation techniques including tunable optical focusing, collimating, and diverging are realized by varying the refractive index (RI) of liquid lens body. Also, we present an absorption measurement of methylene blue (MB) with a collimated probing light, achieving a detection limit of 0.25 mu M by using a 5-mm-long detection cell. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate optofluidic tunable manipulation of polystyrene microparticles based on the combination of a graded-index fiber (GIF) taper and a microcavity. The tunability on the manipulation length is experimentally explored by changing the balance between the optical force and the microfluidic flow force, as well as by tuning the focus of light emitting from the GIF taper via adjusting the length of an air microcavity. By optimizing the geometric shape of the GIF taper, as well as the flow rate and laser power, a manipulation length of 177 μm is achieved, more than 4 times longer than the state-of-the-art optical fiber tweezers. This method has advantages of high flexibility, ease of fabrication and use, integration with microfluidics and has the potential for optofluidic sensing applications.

Abstract:We have realized cell sorting and manipulation in a fabricated microfluidic device by a self-constructed femtosecond optical tweezer efficaciously. The used microfluidic device with two micro-pools inside silica glass is fabricated by water-assisted femtosecond laser ablation and subsequent heat treatment. After the heat treatment, the diameter of the fabricated microchannels could be reduced significantly and the internal surface of the device could also be made much smoother comparatively, which was crucial for the subsequent experiments of living cell manipulation and cell sorting by using femtosecond optical tweezers because of the optical beam quality required. Our experimental results show that we can manipulate cells very easily by our self-constructed femtosecond optical tweezer, which demonstrates that the incorporation of the microfluidic device and the femtosecond optical tweezer is accessible and practical for the micromanipulation experiments, such as cell sorting and manipulation.

Abstract:Controllable optofluidic manipulation of a microsphere is achieved by tuning the strain applied onto the graded-index fiber (GIF) for the first time. Instead of fiber-optic tapers, the GIF with a flat endface, which is simple to be fabricated with low cost and high repeatability, is employed for enhancing the performance of optical manipulation. By exerting strain onto the GIF, the manipulation length can be periodically controlled and tuned up to 1314.1 μm. Furthermore, we use the force microbalance on the microsphere as a new way to measure the microfluidic flow rate down to 30 nL/min.

Abstract:Here we numerically and experimentally studied the optical trapping on a microsphere from an axicon lensed fiber (ALF). The optical force from the fiber with different tapered lengths and by incident light at different wavelengths is calculated. Numerically, the microsphere can be trapped by the fiber with tapered outline y=±x/0.5 and y=±x at a short incident wavelength of 900 nm. While for the fiber with tapered outline y=±x/2, the microsphere can be trapped by the light with longer wavelength of 1100 nm, 1300 nm, or 1500 nm. The optical trapping to a polystyrene microsphere is experimentally demonstrated in a microfluidic channel and the corresponding optical force is derived according to the fluid flow speed. This study can provide a guidance for future tapered fibre design for optical trapping to microspheres.

Abstract:A dynamic chemical etching method based on siphon principle has been developed for controllable fabrication of fiber nano-tips, which could be used in near-field optical microscope and optical nanosensors. Compared with traditional static chemical etching, this method has advantages such as reproducibility, controllability, convenience, less cost, and making tip surface smooth. The overall shape and the tape angle of the tip can be effectively controlled through the speed and direction of water flux. Tips with taper angles from 20degrees to 55degrees, and tips with double tapers have been achieved by this method. (C) 2004 American Vacuum Society.

Abstract:Optical tweezers, as a powerful tool of manipulation of micro-objects, is commonly used for trapping micro-objects and controlling their movement. Making use of the highly focused heat energy at the laser focus and the transportation ability of the optical tweezers, the process of crystallization, the shape of crystal separating out from solution, and the arrangement mode of the deposition from precipitation reaction can be controlled precisely, which may be used as a means of making micro devices. The laser-induced crystallization method and the laser-assisted precipitation method are used to make micro devices with the copper sulfate and the calcium carbonate as the based materials, respectively. Different factors influencing grow speed of crystals are investigated. The condition of precipitation reaction fitting to the laser-assisted precipitation method is discussed. By comparing, the method of laser-induced crystallization works more efficiently, while the method of laser-assisted precipitation can produce more stable devices. The experimental equipment and the proposed methods not only spread the application domain of optical tweezers but also provide a new way for fabrication of micro devices.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally study the optical trapping of two different microparticles by a double-tapered optical fiber probe (DOFP) which is fabricated by the interfacial etching method. A SiO2 microsphere and a yeast, or two SiO2 microspheres with different diameters, are trapped. We calculate and measure the trapping forces on the two microparticles, discuss the impacts of the geometrical size and refractive index on the trapping forces. Both the theoretical calculation and experimental measurements indicate that if the two particles have the same refractive index, the larger the second particle is, the larger the trapping force is. Whereas, if the two particles have the same geometrical size, the smaller the refractive index is, the lager trapping force is. Trapping and manipulation of different multiple microparticles by a DOFP enhance the application of optical tweezers, especially in biomedical engineering and material science.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a single fiber optical tweezer for particle multi-dimensional arrangement based on an optical bottle beam produced by concatenating a few-mode fiber and a step-index multimode fiber. We use the mode division multiplexing technology to produce the optical bottle beam with uneven energy distribution. The LP11 and LP21 mode beams are excited by docking a 980 nm single-mode fiber at the outlet of the light source to a few-mode fiber with a defined offset. The few-mode fiber allows LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams to be spread in. The optical bottle beam is focused on a high refractive index glass microsphere integrated on the fiber end. The LP01 mode beam is used to trap particles and array them in a one-dimension space (linear arrangement), the LP01 and LP11 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a two-dimension space (planar arrangement), and the LP01, LP11, and LP21 mode beams are used to trap and array particles in a three-dimension space (solid arrangement). The proposed fiber optical tweezer is simple in structure and will allow us to examine the interaction between the cells when held in close proximity.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, three-dimensional (3D) trapping and manipulation of microscopic objects by use of supercontinuum white light generated from photonic crystal fibers. Furthermore, we show that the supercontinuum white-light optical tweezers used have the unique capability to perform optical scattering spectroscopy of a single 3D trapped object over a broad wavelength range. These novel tweezers can potentially open a promising avenue toward simultaneous manipulation and characterization of microscopic objects.

Abstract:A simple method to fabricate silica micro/nano-needle arrays (SNAs) is presented based on tube-etching mechanism. Using silica fibers as templates, highly aligned and free-standing needle arrays are created over large area by simple processes of polymer infiltration, cutting, chemical etching and polymer removal. Their sizes and orientations can be arbitrarily and precisely tuned by simply selecting fiber sizes and the cutting directions, respectively. This technique enables the needle arrays with special morphology to be fabricated in a greatly facile way, thereby offers them the potentials in various applications, such as optic, energy harvesting, sensors, etc. As a demonstration, the super hydrophobic property of PDMS treated SNAs is examined (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Using tight focusing light, optical tweezers (OT) are tools that can manipulate and capture microscopic particles and biological cells as well as characterize a wide range of micro and nanomaterials. In this paper, we focused on fibroblasts, which are widely used in the biomedical area for a variety of purposes, including promoting human wound healing and preventing the early proliferation of tumor cells. We first built an optical tweezer experimental platform, using an 808 nm continuous-wave laser as the capture light source, to confirm that the device can precisely control the movement of single or multiple particles as well as fibroblasts. Then, a 1030 nm femtosecond laser was employed as the capture light source to study the manipulation of microparticles and fibroblasts at different powers. Lastly, a protracted manipulation protocol was used to prevent the fibroblasts from adhering to the wall. This method can be used to isolate and precisely block adherent growth of fibroblasts in cell populations. This experimental result can be further extended to other biological cells.
