Abstract:Cloud services are fundamentally supported by Data Center Networks (DCNs). With the fast growth of cloud services, the scale of DCNs increases rapidly, leading to a big concern on system scalability due to multiple constraints. Based on optical switching and transmission, this paper proposes a scalable DCN architecture with distributed placement of optical switches and server racks at different nodes in a given optical network. This solves the scalability issue by relaxing power and cooling constraints, and reducing the number of (electronic) switches using high-capacity optical switches, as well as simplifying internal connections of the DCN using wavelengths in the optical network. Moreover, the distributed optical switches provide service access interfaces to demands in vicinities, and thus reduce the transmission cost of the external traffic. The major concern is the additional delay and cost for remote transmissions of the DCN internal traffic. To this end, we study the component placement problem in DCNs under a given set of external demands and internal traffic patterns. By leveraging among multiple conflicting factors such as scalability and internal overhead of the DCN as well as the transmission cost of external traffic, we propose an ILP (Integer Linear Program) to minimize the overall cost of a DCN while satisfying all service demands in the network. This addresses both scalability and cost minimization issues from a network point of view.
Cost and delay tradeoff in three-stage switch architecture for data center networks

Abstract:Data center networks (DCNs) generally adopt Clos network with crossbar middle switches to achieve non-blocking data switching among the servers, and the number of middle switches is proportional to the number of ports of the aggregation switches in a fixed manner. Besides, reconfiguration overhead of the switches is generally ignored, which may contradict the engineering practice. In this paper, we consider batch scheduling based packet switching in DCNs with reconfiguration overhead at each middle switch, which inevitably leads to packet delay. With existing state-of-the-art traffic matrix decomposition algorithms, we can generate a set of permutations, each of which stands for the configuration of a middle switch. By reconfiguring each middle switch to fulfill multiple configurations in parallel with others, we reveal that a tradeoff exists between packet delay and switch cost (denoted by the number of middle switches), while performance guaranteed switching with bounded packet delay can be achieved without any packet loss. Based on the tradeoff, we can minimize the number of middle switches (under a given packet delay bound) and an overall cost metric (by translating delay into a comparable cost factor), as well as formulating criterions for choosing a matrix decomposition algorithm. This provides a flexible way to reduce the number of middle switches by slightly enlarging the packet delay bound.

Abstract:Relying on the flexible-access interconnects to the scalable storage and compute resources, data centers deliver critical communications connectivity among numerous servers to support the housed applications and services. To provide the high-speeds and long-distance communications, the data centers have turned to fiber interconnections. With the stringently increased traffic volume, the data centers are then expected to further deploy the optical switches into the systems infrastructure to implement the full optical switching. This paper first summarizes the topologies and traffic characteristics in data centers and analyzes the reasons and importance of moving to optical switching. Recent techniques related to the optical switching, and main challenges limiting the practical deployments of optical switches in data centers are also summarized and reported.

Abstract:Data centers have to sustain the rapid growth of data traffic due to the increasing demand of band-width-hungry Internet services. The current fat tree topology causes communication bottlenecks in the server interaction process, resulting in power-hungry O-E-O conversions that limit the minimum latency and the power efficiency of these systems. As a result, recent efforts have advocated that all optical data center networks (DCNs) have the capability to adapt to traffic requirements on demand. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cascaded microelectromechanical systems switches-based DCN architecture which dynamically changes its topology and link capacities, thereby achieving unprecedented flexibility to adapt to dynamic traffic patterns. We analyze it under a data center traffic model to determine its suitability for this type of environment. The proposed architecture can be scaled to 3300 input/output ports by available experimental components with low blocking probability and latency. The blocking probability and latency are about 0.03 and 72 ms at a moderate traffic load for 32 input/output ports based on our numerical results, which are much smaller than the results for 4 input/output ports which are 0.13 and 235 ms, respectively. Abstract:Making optical circuit switching suitable for handling highly dynamic and profoundly changing traffic is a considerable challenge. This motivation drives the development of a hybrid electrical/optical network towards high bandwidth and low latency. Compared with the traditional non-aggregation scheme, we provide two machine learning assisted aggregation schemes. The first one is to design optical cross-connect switches to increase the throughput of the circuit-switched network. In this solution, the optical cross-connect serves both delay-sensitive traffic flows and delay-tolerant traffic flows. As the network throughput rises rapidly, the number of ports of the optical switch remains unchanged. The second scheme is to add small port counts, which maximizes throughput while relaxing the requirements for accurate machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we have a set of four machine learning algorithms, and only the most suitable one is selected at a time. We deploy a machine learning algorithm at edge nodes instead of a central network management system. Therefore, we can simultaneously reduce network overhead and latency. Both aggregation schemes outperform the traditional non-aggregation scheme in terms of throughput, delay, and flow completion time.

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:As the scale of the intra-data center network (DCN) grows even larger, the traditional electrical switching has reached a bottle neck in terms of energy consumption, bandwidth provision, and end-to-end latency. Different approaches have been made by employing the optical switch instead of the electrical ones to solve the bandwidth as well as the energy efficiency and the latency problem. We propose a DCN architecture based on cascaded microelectromechanical systems switches for dynamic DCN connectivity provisioning. This architecture provides high port count, which attributes to the demands of the intradata center traffic. Multiple points to one point switching scenario is experimentally demonstrated through this data center interconnect. Numerical simulation is employed to investigate the performance of the proposed architecture. Abstract:In the electrical/optical hybrid data center networks, the switching fabric is consuming a significant amount of energy. Regarding the fact that the data center traffic is time-varying, this paper studies the energy-efficient scaling approaches to manage the ON/OFF state of optical circuit switches and electrical packet switches to save energy while ensuring service quality. Simulation results show that the energy consumption of the hybrid data centers is saved, and the performance of the data centers is not degraded significantly.

Abstract:Hybrid switching combines the strengths of electronic packet switching and high-speed optical circuit switching and is thus widely believed to be a cost-effective solution for current and future data center networks (DCNs). In designing a hybrid switching DCN, it is essential to know how many resources should be devoted to optical circuit switching and electronic packet switching so the performance requirements in both planes can be satisfied, and, at the same time, objectives such as minimizing the overall system building cost or the power consumption can be realized. In this paper, we introduce BLOC, the Blocking LOss Curve, as a tool to characterize hybrid switching DCNs. With BLOC, the three interacting components in hybrid switching systems-resource allocation, traffic partitioning, and system performance-can be naturally integrated and studied together. We show how BLOC can be used to obtain feasible resource allocation/traffic partition combinations. We also show how system parameters, such as flow arrival characteristics, may affect resource allocation and system costs. Our study reveals that the total amount of resource required to satisfy 95th percentile traffic can be as low as 60% of that required for 99.9th percentile traffic.

Abstract:In topology,an optical network is composed of multiple edges(optical transmission) and nodes(optical switch).The service features and the time structure of optical switch stream supporting the service are discussed based on the connection and connectionless patterns.Examples include the length of optical packet and burst,and the length of optical circuit with high dynamic degree,which is defined in the internet engineering task force(IETF) standard.The measured results imply the achievable shortest length of optical circuits.The space architecture of optical switch is discussed.Examples include three architectures in terms of large port number and capacity,i.e.,the optical switching structures based on micro-electro-mechanical system(MEMS),wavelength-selective switch(WSS),and arrayed waveguide grating(AWG).The architectural scalability of three ones discussed above is addressed.Some other challenging issues are also discussed,including optical buffer and power consumption.Hopefully,the paper is helpful for understanding the essence of optical switching and the relationship with the counterpart electronic switching.

Abstract:Abstract Optical packet switching (OPS) is an emerging area of research in next-generation datacenter applications. There is an exponential growth in the internet traffic due to applications such as social networking, cloud computing, video streaming, etc. Fiber optical network plays a critical role in various data center (DC) operations. Large bandwidth of the optical fiber made OPS, a promising technology for DCs. Arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) are used more frequently in the core of optical packet switches due to its low insertion loss and wavelength dependent routing pattern. Optical switching function can be performed by AWG if each input port is properly equipped with Tunable wavelength converters (TWCs). This paper presents analysis of four optical packet switches namely AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer based switch, AWG and Electronic Memory based switch, Petabit Optical Switch, AWG and Feedback Loop Buffer Loss Compensated based Switch. Switches are analyzed for Bit Error Rate (BER) and energy consumption. The power and noise analysis is performed for calculating the total power required for correct operation of switch and to determine the BER using physical layer analysis. Minimum power level is determined so that received bits are decoded correctly. Energy consumption per bit is also evaluated to identify architecture consuming less energy in the considered architectures.

Abstract:In order to solve the data center link congestion problem,based on the characteristics of the flow distribution and flow types,a flow identification and scheduling scheme based on optical interconnect structure,named HCFD (host-controller flow detection),was proposed to identify the elephant flow which has a large impact on the network performance,and use the SDN controller to make forward strategy,and schedule the network traffic reasonably.The implementation of the scheme was to use the Netfilter framework in Linux kernel protocol on the host side to mark the flow that exceeds the threshold amount.Then,the classification model was used in the controller side to classify the marked flow.Finally,the appropriate forwarding strategy was developed based on the above results.With the advantage of the photoelectric network,mechanisms of flow depth fusion and switching could be realized.The scheme which integrates the advantage of the existing research results,was expected to identify elephant flow more accurately and comprehensively.It can effectively alleviate the network congestion,make full use of network bandwidth,reduce end-to-end delay and packet loss rate.
Intra-Data Center Network Optimization by Means of Application-Based Traffic Modeling and Optical Circuit Switching

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a hybrid electro-optical Intra-Data Center Network based on a service-customized Long-Range Dependence traffic model specific to machine-generated data. We show that different application classes, typically hosted by data centers, possess distinct and highly varying behaviors, which need to be considered for an efficient architecture design and optimization. In this regard, using a statistics-based simulative demonstration, we show the benefits brought by optical circuit switching, namely due to its potential in handling bulky and highly intensive data traffic peculiar to some applications. Owing to the fact that cost savings represent another essential target of network optimization, we also quantify the gains related to capital and operational expenditures specific to the new hybrid scheme.

Abstract:It is widely believed that IP over optical networks will be a major component of the next generation Internet. However, it is not efficient to map a single multicast IP flow into one light-tree, since the bandwidth of an IP flow require is usually much less than that of a light-tree.In this paper, we study the problem of multicast flow aggregation (MFA) in the IP over optical two-layered networks under the overlay model, which can be defined as follows: given a set of head ends (i.e. optical multicasting sources), each of which can provide a set of contents (i.e. multicast IP flows) with different required transmission bandwidth, and a set of requested content at the access routers (i.e. optical multicasting destinations), find a set of light-trees as well as the optimal aggregation of multicast IP flows in each light-tree.We model MFA by a tri-partite graph with multiple criteria and show that the problem is NP-complete. Optimal solutions are designed by exploiting MFA to formulate an integer linear programming (ILP), with two parameters: the multicast receiving index alpha and the redundant transmitting index beta. We also propose a heuristic algorithm. Finally, we compare the performance of MFA for different combination of alpha and beta via experiments and show our heuristic algorithm is effective for large-scale network in numerical results.

Abstract:Automatic Switched Optical Network (ASON), standardized by ITU-T, is emerging as a major technology choice for inter-operational and intervendor optical backbone transportation. With the ability to flexibly and automatically establish and maintain connection, ASON promises an IP-traffic tolerant, end-to-end QoS guaranteed transportation mechanism within which both bandwidth-consuming stream media traffic and traditional web traffic can be relayed smoothly. In this paper, we look into the traffic aggregation effect of TCP traffic in an optical switched network environment modeled under the 3TNet network architecture. We provide a simplified simulation model, which shows how large-scale TCP traffic aggregation can be leveraged by ASON switching ability and meanwhile proves the superiority of this architecture.

Abstract:We consider differentiated time-critical task scheduling in an N X N optical packet switch to ensure 100% throughput and meet different delay requirements among various modules of data center networks (DCNs). Existing algorithms assume that each input-output connection has the same delay bound, which cannot satisfy users' differentiated QoS requirements. To make up this deficiency, we propose a new scheduling scheme to meet the delay requirements in a best-effort manner. Moreover, a speedup is considered to compensate for both the reconfiguration overhead and the unavoidable slots wastage in the switch fabric. With traffic matrix and delay constraint matrix given, this paper proposes an algorithm SDF (Strict Delay First) to realize the packet switching, while minimizing the required speedup. The performance of our scheme is verified by extensive numerical simulations.
