Abstract:We propose a high-rate phase reference scheme for continuous-variable quantum key distribution(CV-QKD). In this scheme, a transmission mode has been employed in which several quantum signalpulses are accompanied by a pair of reference pulses, calibrating the measurement bases of thecommunicating parties. Within a certain range, and with the ratio between quantum signal pulses andreference pulses increased, the secret key rate approaches that of the traditional CV-QKD scheme(which is a scheme without phase noise). Compared with general CV-QKD schemes, which adopt thetransmission mode of a quantum signal pulse plus a pair of reference pulses, this scheme has ahigher spectral efficiency, enabling high-rate CV-QKD. Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) stands as a pioneering method for establishing information-theoretically secure communication channels by utilizing the principles of quantum mechanics. In the security proof of QKD, the phase error rate serves as a critical indicator of information leakage and directly influences the security of the shared key bits between communicating parties, Alice and Bob. In estimating the upper bound of the phase error rate, phase randomization and subsequent postselection mechanisms serve pivotal roles across numerous QKD protocols. Here we make a precise phase error rate analysis for QKD protocols with phase postselection, which helps us to accurately bound the amount of information an eavesdropper may obtain. We further apply our analysis in sending-or-not-sending twin-field quantum key distribution (SNS-TFQKD) and mode-pairing quantum key distribution (MP-QKD). The simulation results confirm that our precise phase error analysis can noticeably improve the key rate performance especially over long distances in practice. Note that our method does not require alterations to the existing experimental hardware or protocol steps. It can be readily applied within current SNS-TF-QKD and MP-QKD for higher key rate generation.

High Efficiency Postprocessing for Continuous-variable Quantum Key Distribution: Using All Raw Keys for Parameter Estimation and Key Extraction

Abstract:High efficiency postprocessing of continuous-variable quantum key distribution system has a significant impact on the secret key rate and transmission distance of the system. Currently, the postprocessing mainly contains four steps in the following order: sifting, parameter estimation, information reconciliation, and privacy amplification. For a quantum channel with unknown prior characteristics, part of the raw keys (typically half) have to be sacrificed to estimate the channel parameters, which is used to assist in error correction (part of information reconciliation) and estimate the secret key rate. This introduces a tradeoff between the secret key rate and the accuracy of parameter estimation when considering the finite-size effect. In this paper, we propose a high efficiency postprocessing method which uses all the raw keys for both parameter estimation and key extraction. It is realized by exchanging the order of parameter estimation and information reconciliation, while the other steps remain unchanged. After the sifting step, the extra data (used for phase compensation and synchronization etc) can be used to roughly estimate the quantum channel parameters, or using the estimated results of last block, thus the error correction can be realized normally. After the success of error correction, the reconciler recovers the raw keys of the other side by a reverse mapping function. Then she uses all the raw keys of both sides for parameter estimation to estimate the quantum channel parameters and calculate the secret key rate of the system. Finally, they perform the privacy amplification step to obtain the unconditional security keys. We show that this method improves the accuracy of parameter estimation and the secret key rate of continuous-variable quantum key distribution system.

Abstract:The continuous variable quantum key distribution has been considered to have the potential to provide high secret key rate. However, in present experimental demonstrations, the secret key can be distilled only under very small loss rates. Here, by calculating explicitly the computational complexity with the channel transmission, we show that under high loss rate it is hard to distill the secret key in present continuous variable scheme and one of its advantages, the potential of providing high secret key rate, may therefore be limited.

Abstract:The optical phase shifter that constantly rotates the local oscillator phase is a necessity in continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems with heterodyne detection. In previous experimental implementations, the optical phase shifter is generally regarded as an ideal passive optical device that perfectly rotates the phase of the electromagnetic wave of $90^\circ$. However, the optical phase shifter in practice introduces imperfections, mainly the measurement angular error, which inevitably deteriorates the security of the practical systems. Here, we will give a concrete interpretation of measurement angular error in practical systems and the corresponding entanglement-based description. Subsequently, from the parameter estimation, we deduce the overestimated excess noise and the underestimated transmittance, which lead to a reduction in the final secret key rate. Simultaneously, we propose an estimation method of the measurement angular error. Next, the practical security analysis is provided in detail, and the effect of the measurement angular error and its corresponding compensation scheme are demonstrated. We conclude that measurement angular error severely degrades the security, but the proposed calibration and compensation method can significantly help improve the performance of the practical CV-QKD systems.

Abstract:We present a discretely modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution system in free space by using strong coherent states. The amplitude noise in the laser source is suppressed to the shot-noise limit by using a mode cleaner combined with a frequency shift technique. Also, it is proven that the phase noise in the source has no impact on the final secret key rate. In order to increase the encoding rate, we use broadband homodyne detectors and the no-switching protocol. In a realistic model, we establish a secret key rate of 46.8 kbits/s against collective attacks at an encoding rate of 10MHz for a 90% channel loss when the modulation variance is optimal.
Pilot-reference-free continuous-variable quantum key distribution with efficient decoy-state analysis

Abstract:Continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV QKD) using optical coherent detectors is practically favorable due to its low implementation cost, flexibility of wavelength division multiplexing, and compatibility with standard coherent communication technologies. However, the security analysis and parameter estimation of CV QKD are complicated due to the infinite-dimensional latent Hilbert space. Also, the transmission of strong reference pulses undermines the security and complicates the experiments. In this work, we tackle these two problems by presenting a time-bin-encoding CV protocol with a simple phase-error-based security analysis valid under general coherent attacks. With the key encoded into the relative intensity between two optical modes, the need for global references is removed. Furthermore, phase randomization can be introduced to decouple the security analysis of different photon-number components. We can hence tag the photon number for each round, effectively estimate the associated privacy using a carefully designed coherent-detection method, and independently extract encryption keys from each component. Simulations manifest that the protocol using multi-photon components increases the key rate by two orders of magnitude compared to the one using only the single-photon component. Meanwhile, the protocol with four-intensity decoy analysis is sufficient to yield tight parameter estimation with a short-distance key-rate performance comparable to the best Bennett-Brassard-1984 implementation.

Trusted source noise model of discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Abstract:Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution offers a pragmatic solution, greatly simplifying experimental procedures while retaining robust integration with classical optical communication. Theoretical analyses have progressively validated the comprehensive security of this protocol, paving the way for practical experimentation. However, imperfect source in practical implementations introduce noise. The traditional approach is to assume that eavesdroppers can control all of the source noise, which overestimates the ability of eavesdroppers and underestimates secret key rate. In fact, some parts of source noise are intrinsic and cannot be manipulated by eavesdropper, so they can be seen as trusted noise. We tailor a trusted model specifically for the discrete-modulated protocol and upgrade the security analysis accordingly. Simulation results demonstrate that this approach successfully mitigates negative impact of imperfect source on system performance while maintaining security of the protocol. Furthermore, our method can be used in conjunction with trusted detector noise model, effectively reducing the influence of both source and detector noise in experimental setup. This is a meaningful contribution to the practical deployment of discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution systems.

Abstract:One of the main obstacles for quantum-enhanced metrology is that the estimation accuracy enhanced by non-classical states is likely to be obliterated by noises. Here, we consider a scenario of phase estimation suffering from pure dephasing noise which is taken into account after the phase parameter being imprinted, and propose a scheme to effectively protect the quantum enhancement from both correlated and uncorrelated dephasing sources by performing a rotation operation prior to the noise. By invoking the Fisher information approach, we strictly prove that a pi/2 rotation is the ideal one which can completely resist the influence of the phase noise for all real symmetric pure states and the optimal measurement approaching the ultimate sensitivity set by quantum Cramer-Rao bound is presented. Additionally, we numerically study the availability of the scheme with arbitrary angle rotation for different probe states and show that our scheme will still robust for general symmetric pure states even with non-ideal rotation operation.

Abstract:The security of quantum key distribution (QKD) relies on the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, with which legitimate users are able to estimate information leakage by monitoring the disturbance of the transmitted quantum signals. Normally, the disturbance is reflected as bit flip errors in the sifted key; thus, privacy amplification, which removes any leaked information from the key, generally depends on the bit error rate. Recently, a round-robin differential-phase-shiftQKDprotocol for which privacy amplification does not rely on the bit error rate (Sasaki et al 2014 Nature 509 475) was proposed. The amount of leaked information can be bounded by the sender during the state-preparation stage and hence, is independent of the behavior of the unreliable quantum channel. In our work, we apply the tagging technique to the protocol and present a tight bound on the key rate and employ a decoy-state method. The effects of background noise and misalignment are taken into account under practical conditions. Our simulation results show that the protocol can tolerate channel error rates close to 50% within a typical experiment setting. That is, there is a negligible restriction on the error rate in practice.
Comparison of Discrete Variable and Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution Protocols with Phase Noise in the Thermal-Loss Channel

Abstract:Discrete-variable (DV) quantum key distribution (QKD) based on single-photon detectors and sources have been successfully deployed for long-range secure key distribution. On the other hand, continuous-variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD) based on coherent detectors and sources is currently lagging behind in terms of loss and noise tolerance. An important discerning factor between DV-QKD and CV-QKD is the effect of phase noise, which is known to be more relevant in CV-QKD. In this article, we investigate the effect of phase noise on DV-QKD and CV-QKD protocols, including the six-state protocol and squeezed-state protocol, in a thermal-loss channel but with the assumed availability of perfect sources and detectors. We find that in the low phase noise regime but high thermal noise regime, CV-QKD can tolerate more loss compared to DV-QKD. We also compare the secret key rate as an additional metric for the performance of QKD. Requirements for this quantity to be high vastly extend the regions at which CV-QKD performs better than DV-QKD. Our analysis addresses the questions of how phase noise affects DV-QKD and CV-QKD and why the former has historically performed better in a thermal-loss channel.

Feasibility of continuous-variable quantum key distribution with noisy coherent states

Abstract:We address security of the quantum key distribution scheme based on the noisy modulation of coherent states and investigate how it is robust against noise in the modulation regardless of the particular technical implementation. As the trusted preparation noise is shown to be security breaking even for purely lossy channels, we reveal the essential difference between two types of trusted noise, namely sender-side preparation noise and receiver-side detection noise, the latter being security preserving. We consider the method of sender-side state purification to compensate the preparation noise and show its applicability in the realistic conditions of channel loss, untrusted channel excess noise, and trusted detection noise. We show that purification makes the scheme robust to the preparation noise (i.e., even the arbitrary noisy coherent states can in principle be used for the purpose of quantum key distribution). We also take into account the effect of realistic reconciliation and show that the purification method is still efficient in this case up to a limited value of preparation noise.

Abstract:Although the continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol based on a local local oscillator (LLO) can close all the security loopholes from the transmitted local oscillator (TLO), the phase noise caused by the inaccurate phase reference information limits the performance of the protocol. To reduce the residual phase noise, in this work, we propose a phase estimation and compensation method based on the temporal convolutional neural (TCN) model, where a part of phase information obtained by measuring pilot pulses is employed as the training data and input into the TCN module. With a trained TCN module, the subsequent phase drifts can be more accurately estimated, allowing for better phase compensation and lower phase noise. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed scheme can improve the transmission distance and the secret key rate of the LLO protocol.

Abstract:Continuous Variable (CV) quantum key distribution (QKD) is a promising candidate for practical implementations due to its compatibility with the existing communication technology. A trusted device scenario assuming that an adversary has no access to imperfections such as electronic noises in the detector is expected to provide significant improvement in the key rate, but such an endeavor so far was made separately for specific protocols and for specific proof techniques. Here, we develop a simple and general treatment that can incorporate the effects of Gaussian trusted noises for any protocol that uses homodyne/heterodyne measurements. In our method, a rescaling of the outcome of a noisy homodyne/heterodyne detector renders it equivalent to the outcome of a noiseless detector with a tiny additional loss, thanks to a noise-loss equivalence well-known in quantum optics. Since this method is independent of protocols and security proofs, it is applicable to Gaussian-modulation and discrete-modulation protocols, to the finite-size regime, and to any proof techniques developed so far and yet to be discovered as well.

Abstract:In conventional quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, security is guaranteed by estimating the amount of leaked information. Such estimation tends to overrate, leading to a fundamental threshold of the bit error rate, which becomes a bottleneck of practical QKD development. This bottleneck is broken through by the recent work of round-robin differential phase-shift (RRDPS) protocol, which eliminates the fundamental threshold of the bit error rate. The key challenge for the implementation of the RRDPS scheme lies in the realization of a variable-delay Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which requires active and random choice of many delays. By designing an optical system with multiple switches and employing an active phase stabilization technology, we successfully construct a variable-delay interferometer with 127 actively selectable delays. With this measurement, we experimentally demonstrate the RRDPS protocol and obtain a final key rate of 15.54 bps with a total loss of 18 dB and an error rate of 8.9%.

Abstract:Discrete-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution with homodyne detection is widely recognized for its ease of implementation, efficiency with respect to error correction, and its compatibility with modern optical communication devices. However, recent studies report that the application of homodyne detection obtains poor tolerance to excess noise and insufficient transmission distance, hence seriously restricting the large-scale deployment of quantum secure communication networks. In this paper, we propose a homodyne detection protocol using the quadrature phase shift keying technique. By limiting information leakage, our proposed protocol enhances excess noise tolerance to a high level. Furthermore, we demonstrate that homodyne detection performs better than heterodyne detection in quaternary-modulated continuous-variable quantum key distribution under the untrusted detector noise scenario. The security is analyzed using the tight numerical method against collective attacks in the asymptotic regime. Our results imply that the current protocol is able to distribute keys in nearly intercity area and thus paves the way for constructing low-cost quantum secure communication networks.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution(QKD) might be the most famous application of quantum information theory. The idea of QKD is not difficult to understand but in practical implementations, many problems are needed to be solved, for example, the noise of the channels. Previous works usually discuss the estimate of the channels and employ error-correcting procedures, whose feasibility and efficiency depend on the strength of the noise, or assist with entanglement distillation procedures, which often result in a large consumption of states while not all states can be distilled. This paper aims to study QKD over noisy channels including Pauli noises, amplitude damping noises, phase damping noises, collective noises as well as mixtures of them, in any strength without distillations. We provide a method, called the testing state method, to implement QKD protocols without errors over arbitrarily strength noisy channels. The method can be viewed as an error-correcting procedure, and can also be employed for other tasks.
