Abstract:We consider the Maxwell-Bloch equations that describe the propagation of coherent optical pulses in a resonant two-level medium associated with the self-induced transparency phenomenon. Using degenerate Darboux transformation, the dynamical evolution of coherent multi-optical rogue waves is constructed with different kinds of wave patterns: fundamental-, triangular-, and ring-type patterns. We also discuss the explicit analytical forms of these universal patterns as well as we provide the corresponding numerical data of the obtained optical rogue waves.

Abstract:We study the existence and properties of rogue-wave solutions in different nonlinear wave evolution models that are commonly used in optics and hydrodynamics. In particular, we consider the Fokas-Lenells equation, the defocusing vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and the long-wave–short-wave resonance equation. We show that rogue-wave solutions in all of these models exist in the subset of parameters where modulation instability is present if and only if the unstable sideband spectrum also contains cw or zero-frequency perturbations as a limiting case (baseband instability). We numerically confirm that rogue waves may only be excited from a weakly perturbed cw whenever the baseband instability is present. Conversely, modulation instability leads to nonlinear periodic oscillations.

Comparison of friedewald formula and modified friedewald formula with direct homogeneous assay for low density lipoprotein cholesterol estimation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To compare the Friedewald and modified Friedewald formulae with direct homogeneous assay for serum lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels estimation. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Rawalpindi, from June to December 2011. METHODOLOGY Healthy subjects of either gender, from Rawalpindi, aged 18-75 years were included by consecutive sampling. Patients with diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, chronic kidney disease, those taking lipid lowering drugs and samples with triglyceride (TG) > 4.52 mmol/l were excluded from the study. Total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, TG and LDL-C were measured on Hitachi 912 chemistry analyzer (Roche). LDL-C levels were also calculated by Friedewald formula (FF) and Vujovic modified formula (VMF). Paired sample t-test and scatter plots were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS Although both calculated methods showed good correlation with direct assay (r > 0.93) in 300 subjects, but the difference was statistically significant. The ffLDL-C were 0.12 ± 31 mmol/l (p < 0.001) lower and vmfLDL-C were 0.11 ± 26 mmol/l (p < 0.001) higher than dLDL-C. The difference was not significant between ffLDL-C and dLDL-C at TG levels < 1.70 mmol/l (p = 0.58) and between vmfLDL-C and dLDL-C at TG levels 2.26 - 4.52 mmol/l (p = 0.38). At all other TG levels, the difference between LDL-C calculated by both formulas and dLDL-C was statistically significant (p < 0.001). As compared to direct assay, 11% and 14% subjects were classified in wrong National Cholesterol Education Programm's cardiac risk categories by FF and VMF respectively. CONCLUSION LDL-C should be measured by direct homogeneous assay in routine clinical laboratories, as the calculated methods did not have a uniform performance for LDL-C estimation at different TG levels.

Abstract:In addition to deep-water rogue waves which develop from the modulation instability of an optical CW, wave propagation in optical fibers may also produce shallow water rogue waves. These extreme wave events are generated in the modulationally stable normal dispersion regime. A suitable phase or frequency modulation of a CW laser leads to chirp-free and flat-top pulses or flaticons which exhibit a stable self-similar evolution. Upon collision, flaticons at different carrier frequencies, which may also occur in wavelength division multiplexed transmission systems, merge into a single, high-intensity, temporally and spatially localized rogue pulse.

Abstract:There are many examples in physics of systems showing rogue wave behaviour, the generation of high amplitude events at low probability. Although initially studied in oceanography, rogue waves have now been seen in many other domains, with particular recent interest in optics. Although most studies in optics have focussed on how nonlinearity can drive rogue wave emergence, purely linear effects have also been shown to induce extreme wave amplitudes. In this paper, we report a detailed experimental study of linear rogue waves in an optical system, using a spatial light modulator to impose random phase structure on a coherent optical field. After free space propagation, different random intensity patterns are generated, including partially-developed speckle, a broadband caustic network, and an intermediate pattern with characteristics of both speckle and caustic structures. Intensity peaks satisfying statistical criteria for rogue waves are seen especially in the case of the caustic network, and are associated with broader spatial spectra. In addition, the electric field statistics of the intermediate pattern shows properties of an optical sea with near-Gaussian statistics in elevation amplitude, and trough-to-crest statistics that are near-Rayleigh distributed but with an extended tail where a number of rogue wave events are observed.

Abstract:Based on the variable-coefficient Lugiato-Lefever equation, nonlinear dynamics of rogue waves in whispering gallery mode optical resonators are studied. By means of the analytical solution in the absence of pump, dynamical behaviors of the rogue waves in the periodic system are discussed. Firstly, the first-order rogue wave under the condition of no pumping has obvious periodic nature, and the periodicity of width and amplitude of rogue wave can be consistent by controlling the wavefront curvature, and the energy of rogue wave remains stable under the small gain parameter, and the inverse diffraction effect makes the center position of rogue wave produce a small offset. In addition, the amplitudes of second-order rogue waves have more complicated periodicity and longer period lengths both with the good stability. At last, the dynamical behaviors of rogue wave after adding external excitation are investigated. Under the periodical external excitation with the lower intensity, rogue wave can achieve a longer stable transmission time, while the smaller wavefront curvature can effectively prolong the stable transmission time of rogue wave. Moreover, we investigate the influence of different forms of external excitation on rogue wave, and the periodical external excitation makes rogue waves more stable than the constant external excitation. These results extend the application of higher-order rogue waves in (2 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear systems, and have implications for the development of high-energy optical pulses.

Abstract:The rotating reduced Maxwell-Bloch (RMB) equations, which describe the propagation of few-cycle optical pulses in a transparent media with two isotropic polarized electronic field components, are derived from a system of complete Maxwell-Bloch equations without using the slowly varying envelope approximations. Two hierarchies of the obtained rational solutions, including rogue waves, which are also called few-cycle optical rogue waves, of the rotating RMB equations are constructed explicitly through degenerate Darboux transformation. In addition to the above, the dynamical evolution of the first-, second-, and third-order few-cycle optical rogue waves are constructed with different patterns. For an electric field E in the three lower-order rogue waves, we find that rogue waves correspond to localized large amplitude oscillations of the polarized electric fields. Further a complementary relationship of two electric field components of rogue waves is discussed in terms of analytical formulas as well as numerical figures.

Abstract:The field of optical rogue waves is a rapidly expanding topic with a focus on explaining their emergence. To complement this research, instead of providing a microscopic model that generates extreme events, we concentrate on a general quantitative description of the observed behavior. We explore two complementary top-down approaches to estimating the exponent describing the power-law decaying distribution of optical rogue waves observed in supercontinuum generated in a single-mode fiber in the normal-dispersion regime by applying a highly fluctuating pump. The two distinct approaches provide consistent results, outperforming the standard Hill estimator. Further analysis of the distributions reveals the breakdown of power-law behavior due to pump depletion and detector saturation. Either of our methods is adaptable to analyze extreme-intensity events from arbitrary experimental data.

Abstract:In this paper the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations which describe the propagation of two optical pulses in an optical medium with coherent three-level atoms are studied by Darboux transformation. The general nth-order rogue wave solution involving two different choices of multiple roots for the spectral characteristic equation and the multiparametric nth-order semirational solution are both obtained in terms of Schur polynomials. The explicit rogue wave solutions and semirational solutions from first to second order are provided. In contrast to the known Peregrine soliton, dark and four-petaled structures, some unusual patterns such as triple-hole, twisted-pair, composite four-petaled and composite dark rogue waves are put forward. Moreover, the interaction between dark-bright soliton and dark rogue wave and interaction between breather and dark rogue wave are shown. Further, the higher-order nonlinear superposition modes which feature triple and quadruple temporal-spatial distributions are presented. Finally, the state transition between rogue wave and W-shaped soliton is found where the modulation instability growth rate tends to zero under the low perturbation frequency. Particularly, the dark and double-peak W-shaped solitons are examined.

Quantifying optical rogue waves

Abstract:This work presents two distinct approaches to estimating the exponent related to the distribution of optical rogue waves observed in supercontinuum generated in a single-mode fiber, that is, to quantifying the rogueness. The first is a generalization of the well-known Hill estimator, and the second relies on estimating all parameters of a multi-parameter model. We show that the model shows a good correspondence with experimental data, and that the two estimating approaches provide consistent results, which are significantly more accurate than those obtained with earlier methods of estimation. Furthermore, alternative visualization through the tail function revealed the presence of pump depletion as well as detector saturation leading to the breakdown of power-law behavior for the largest observations. We characterized this breakdown via a combination of an exponential and a generalized Pareto distribution. Additionally, we have uncovered a weak memory effect in the data, which can be attributed to changes of the refractive index in the single-mode fiber.

Abstract:<p>Nonlinear optics plays a central role in the advancement of optical science and laser‐based technologies. The second‐order rogue‐wave solutions and modulation instability for the coherently coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the positive coherent coupling in nonlinear optics are reported in this paper. Generalized Darboux transformations for such coupled equations are derived, with which the second‐order rational solutions for the purpose of modelling the rogue waves are obtained. With respect to the slowly‐varying complex amplitudes of two interacting optical modes, it is observed that 1) number of valleys of the second‐order rogue waves increases and peak value of the second‐order rogue wave decreases first and then increases; 2) single‐hump second‐order rogue wave turns into the double‐hump second‐order rogue wave; 3) single‐hump bright second‐order rogue wave turns into the dark second‐order rogue wave and finally becomes the three‐hump bright second‐order rogue wave. Meanwhile, baseband modulation instability through the linear stability analysis is seen.</p>

Peregrine solitons and resonant radiation in cubic and quadratic media

Abstract:We present the fascinating phenomena of resonant radiation emitted by transient rogue waves in cubic and quadratic nonlinear media, particularly those shed from Peregrine solitons, one of the main wavepackets used today to model real-world rogue waves. In cubic media, it turns out that the emission of radiation from a Peregrine soliton can be attributed to the presence of higher-order dispersion, but is affected by the intrinsic local longitudinal variation of the soliton wavenumber. In quadratic media, we reveal that a two-color Peregrine rogue wave can resonantly radiate dispersive waves even in the absence of higher-order dispersion, subjected to a phase-matching mechanism that involves the second-harmonic wave, and to a concomitant difference-frequency generation process. In both cubic and quadratic media, we provide simple analytic criteria for calculating the radiated frequencies in terms of material parameters, showing excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:We identify the role of transverse modes in causing temporal instability in an all-solid-state laser system and thus propose a new method to trigger deterministic optical rogue waves. Experimental investigations show that the near-degenerate transverse modes with mode frequency difference close to the relaxation oscillation frequency is responsible for the rogue waves. By tilting the reflective mirror, the transverse modes beating frequency decreases and gets close to relaxation oscillation frequency, thus the system exhibits self-pulsing behavior and rarely-arising giant pulses. The statistical distribution of the pulse intensity deviates from the exponential statistics to the L-shaped distributions with long tails, indicating the appearance of optical rogue waves. The conclusion can be extended to other Class-B lasers where the population inversion cannot be eliminated adiabatically.

Abstract:We study the dynamics of rogue waves on a double-plane wave background in two-component coupledsystems. The results indicate that many different patterns can still be evolved from resonantperturbations with the two plane waves background. The obtained vector rational solutions can bedecomposed into two rational solutions located on the two plane waves separately. This enables us toinvestigate the superposition of several well-known fundamental rogue wave patterns, mainlyincluding eye-shaped, anti-eye-shaped, and four-petaled one. The explicit conditions for differentpossible superpositions are clarified by a phase diagram. The analysis indicates that the obtainedrational solution described patterns admit many different profiles, in contrast to the ones reportedbefore. The studies can be extended to investigate other localized waves on double-plane wavebackgrounds and even more plane waves involved cases in multi-component coupled systems.

Abstract:It is known that rogue waves (RWs) are generated by the modulational instability (MI) of the baseband type. Starting with the Bers-Kaup-Reiman system for three-wave resonant interactions, we identify a specific RW-building mechanism based on MI which includes zero wavenumber in the gain band. An essential finding is that this mechanism works solely under a linear relation between the MI gain and a vanishingly small wavenumber of the modulational perturbation. Abstract:We numerically investigate the extended spectral broadening via a spectral sinusoidal phase-modulated Gaussian pulse. The modulated pulse can create two predominant solitons that collide with each other to form a rogue wave (RW), resulting in an RW-induced dispersive wave emission. This leads to a further spectral broadening beyond the soliton-induced dispersive wave and can be manipulated by tuning the phase modulation parameters. Before the appearance of RW, the modulated pulse-propagation scenario is governed by the optical Newton's cradles and the optical event horizons. These complex dynamics reveal a new method for controlling the RW generation as well as spectral broadening at relatively low power levels. Our results have potential implications for controllable excitation of RWs and broadband supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:A scheme for stabilizing and guiding optical RWs in a cold atomic gas via electromagnetically induced transparency is presented. An external potential with the form of Gaussian and Airy beams is realized by an assisted laser, which can be used to suppress the instability of RWs and guide the RWs to propagate along curved trajectories. Rogue waves (RWs) are mysterious nonlinear waves and have attracted much attention in recent years. However, they are usually unstable during propagation. Here, a scheme for stabilizing and guiding optical RWs in a cold atomic gas working under the condition of electromagnetically induced transparency is presented. It is shown that an external potential for probe laser field can be created by using an assisting laser field. If the assisting laser field has the form of Gaussian beam, the instability of the RWs can be largely suppressed. It is also shown that the RWs can be stabilized and guided to propagate along curved trajectories if the assisting laser field has the form of Airy beam. The results reported here contribute to the effort for stabilizing and manipulating RWs, which may have potential applications in optical transmission and information processing.
