Abstract:We present a simple method to enable flexible tuning of non-diffracting beams in a two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal, based on the interference of two or more non-collinear second-harmonic beams. By manipulating the wavelengths of the beams and the angle of incidence of the fundamental wave, the arbitrary period and propagation length, as well as the wavelength of the generated nonlinear non-diffracting array beams, can be tuned flexibly. These light beams can trap and manipulate multiple particles, create new forms of optical imaging systems, and act within nonlinear devices to bring novel functionalities to integrated optics.

Abstract:Diffraction-free beams have attracted increasing research interests because of their unique performances and broad applications in various fields. Although many methods have been developed to produce such beams, it is still challenging to realize a tunable non-diffracting beam. Here, we report the generation of a tunable diffraction-free array through second-harmonic generation in a nonlinear photonic crystal, i.e., a 2D periodically-poled LiTaO3 crystal. In such a crystal, the second-harmonic wave is engineered by properly designing the domain structure based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle. The characteristics of the generated diffraction-free array including its period, propagation length, and wavelength can be tuned by simply changing the input wavelength. Our observation not only enriches the diffraction-free optics, but also has potential applications for photolithography and imaging.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a compact, all-solid-state 532 nm semi-Gaussian laser beam (SGB) source based on a 1064 nm laser and a transversely varying periodically-poled LiTaO3 (TPPLT) crystal as the laser beam shaper as well as the nonlinear frequency converter. We have used the designed TPPLT crystal to obtain a neat 532nm SGB with the quality of QSGB=1:17.5 by a single-pass second harmonic generation. The dependence of the generated SGB quality on the designed TPPLT parameter and the potential applications of the neat SGB are also discussed.

Abstract:Based on nonlinear Talbot effect, we propose an acousto-optic tunable second-harmonic (SH) array in a one-dimensional periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) crystal. The SH array is the self-imaging of χ(2) in the PPLN crystal. By applying an acoustic wave, we can tune the period, the distribution, and even the dimension of the array. Such a phenomenon has potential applications in tunable high-resolution Talbot illuminators, beam shapers, and image processing.

Abstract:When hitting interfaces between two different media, light beams may undergo small shifts. Such beam shifts cannot be described by the geometrical optics based on Snell’s law and their underlying physics has attracted much attention. Conventional beam shifts like Goos-Hänchen shifts and Imbert-Fedorov shifts not only require obliquely incident beams but also are mostly very small compared to the wavelength and waist size of the beams. Here we propose a method to realize large and controllable polarization-dependent lateral shifts for normally incident beams with photonic crystal slabs. As a proof of the concept, we engineer the momentum-space geometric phase distribution of a normally incident beam by controlling its interaction with a photonic crystal slab whose momentum-space polarization structure is designed on purpose. The engineered geometric phase distribution is designed to result in a large shift of the beam. We fabricate the designed photonic crystal slab and directly observe the beam shift, which is ~5 times the wavelength and approaches the waist radius. Based on periodic structures and only requiring simple manipulation of symmetry, our proposed method is an important step towards practical applications of beam shifting effects.

Abstract:We propose a two-dimensional photonic crystal based polarization beam splitter. The central idea of this polarization beam splitter relies on negative refraction of one polarization and conventional refraction of the other, leading to a spatial separation of two orthogonal polarizations. Finite-difference time-domain simulations are carried out in order to demonstrate our proposed idea. Our results indicate that this polarization beam splitter possesses a large separate angle for two orthogonal polarizations and can be made ultracompact.

Abstract:The authors show the Brewster angle phenomenon of p waves in two-dimensional metallic photonic crystals of rectangular lattices with effective medium theory and accurate multiple-scattering calculations. The Brewster angle can be tuned over a wide range by varying the structure parameters. Based on this phenomenon, the authors propose a polarization beam splitter which can completely separate the p and s waves at an incident angle of 45°±10° in a very wide wavelength range (1∼500μm).

Abstract:We present a positive-negative refraction effect in which, under certain conditions, an incident plane wave launched into a photonic crystal excites a positive-refracted Bloch wave and a negative-refracted Bloch wave simultaneously, both of which maintain the polarization. By utilizing this phenomenon, wide-angle beam splitting can be realized at the microscale level. Numerical simulations are employed to demonstrate this anomalous refraction behavior. Abstract:A periodically-poled LiNbO 3 (PPLN) crystal features space-dependent second-order nonlinear coefficients, which is one of the most important materials to effectively control nonlinear optical interactions through quasi-phase matching(QPM). By using electric-field poling method, 1D and 2D PPLN crystals have been successfully fabricated for laser frequency conversion, quantum light sources, nonlinear beam shaping and nonlinear optical imaging. Recently, femtosecond laser engineering technique is utilized to prepare 3D domain structures inside LiNbO 3 crystal, which provides a promising platform to control nonlinear interacting waves in 3D configuration. After 40 years of developments, PPLN crystals still have exciting prospects in fundamental researches and practical applications for integrated photonic chip, quantum information processing,and so on.

Abstract:Conventionally, there is no lateral beam shift (LBS) at normal incidence for a wave beam pass through a slab. However, by simultaneously breaking spatial inversion, time-reversal, and mirror symmetries of the photonic crystal slab, we realized nonreciprocal LBS for the transmitted wave beam with high transmission. We showed that the nonreciprocal LBS could be positive or negative, which could be tuned by the arrangement of a magnetic basis in the unit cell. We verified the nonreciprocal LBS at normal incidence by experiments. Our study provides a useful way to manipulate the wave propagation and wave-matter interaction by artificial materials and leads to a breakthrough in LBS, which has promising potential in optical devices, such as transducers, switches, and unidirectional couplers.

Abstract:We experimentally observed conical third harmonic generation (THG) in a two-dimensional periodically poled LiTaO3 nonlinear photonic crystal. The conical THG was attributed to cascaded quasi-phase matching (QPM) processes assisted by scattering fundamental waves in the nonlinear photonic crystal. The characteristics of the generated conical beam, such as the emit angle and beam size, varied with the fundamental wavelength because it changed the scattering-assisted QPM configuration. Our experimental results demonstrated that scattering light can be effectively involved in a cascade nonlinear optical process through QPM, which provides a possible way to produce short-wavelength conical beams to meet the demands of practical applications.

Abstract:With the nonlinear diffraction concept, we present a diffractive study of optical parametric interactions in nonlinear photonic crystals. The nonlinear diffraction concept enables the design of complicated nonlinear photonic crystal structures in an intuitive way. We show that there are two basic linear sequences, the anti-stacking and the para-stacking sequences, existing in a one-dimensional structure; and we present the realization of multiple phase-matching resonances in the combination of the two basic sequences. The parameters affecting the structure factor of a two-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal are investigated, which indicate that not only the Ewald construction but also the relative domain size determines two-dimensional nonlinear diffractions.

Abstract:Nonlinear beam shaping can be dynamically controlled by temperature or polarization to form switchable nonlinear structured beams, which constitute an unprecedented system for realizing optical encryption at new frequencies and high-dimensional nonclassical light sources. However, previous works were limited by a trade-off between the conversion efficiency and the modulation dimension of the beam. It is still technologically challenging to achieve efficient and switchable multidimensional nonlinear beam shaping. Here, we demonstrate switchable generation of nonlinear structured beams via three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs) fabricated by femtosecond laser writing technique with considerable conversion efficiency. The 3D NPCs contain different sequential 3D arrays of spatially modulated χ(2) nonlinearity designed by computer-generated hologram (CGH) along the optical y-axis (LiNbO3 crystal). The output direction of the nonlinear beams can be changed by the carrier frequencies, while their efficiencies can be increased by the quasi-phase matching condition.

Abstract:A two-dimensional square lattice photonic crystal composed of ferroelectric cylinder rods in air background is proposed to realize tunable negative refraction by applying electric field. Based on the Pockels effect, refractive indices of rods can be changed linearly along with applied electric field, and then photonic band structure and equifrequency surface can be modified. The refractive angle could vary from negative to positive depending on intensity of electric field at a certain incident angle. The feasibility of the photonic crystal operating in visible region at the frequency of 476.5THz was presented, which might have potential applications in photoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A novel layered structure, a polar-crystal film coated with dual-twisted black phosphorus (BP) gratings, is proposed to enhance GH- and IF-shifts. Taking ZnS as the polar crystal, our investigation shows that the optimized BP grating-ZnS-BP grating structure can increase the GH- and IF-shifts to nearly half of the beam waist in the near-infrared frequency region. It is very interesting that the sign of IF-shift can be switched by simply inverting the dual-twisted BP gratings without altering its amplitude. These phenomena result from the distinct interactions between the surface plasmon polaritons in the dual-twisted BP gratings and surface phonon polaritons in the polar crystals. The distribution of electric field is simulated by the commercial software Comsol Multiphysics, which offers additional support to the conclusions. The incident-angle and rotation-angle dependence of the GH- and IF-shifts are also examined. Our work provides a framework, a polar crystal film interlayered in the dual-twisted gratings, to adjust and improve the GH- and IF-shifts.

Abstract:Nonlinear beam shaping refers to spatial reconfiguration of a light beam at a new frequency, which can be achieved by using nonlinear photonic crystals (NPCs). Direct nonlinear beam shaping has been achieved to convert second-harmonic waves into focusing spots, vortex beams, and diffraction-free beams. However, previous nonlinear beam shaping configurations in one-dimensional and two-dimensional (2D) NPCs generally suffer from low efficiency because of unfulfilled phase-matching condition. Here, we present efficient generations of second-harmonic vortex and Hermite-Gaussian beams in the recently-developed three-dimensional (3D) lithium niobate NPCs fabricated by using a femtosecond-laser-engineering technique. Since 3D χ(2) modulations can be designed to simultaneously fulfill the requirements of nonlinear wave-front shaping and quasi-phase-matching, the conversion efficiency is enhanced up to two orders of magnitude in a tens-of-microns-long 3D NPC in comparison to the 2D case. Efficient nonlinear beam shaping paves a way for its applications in optical communication, super-resolution imaging, high-dimensional entangled source, etc.
