Abstract:An ultra-high sensitive distributed microstructured optical fiber (DMOF) acoustic sensor based on coherent OTDR demodulation method and hollow cylinder transducer is presented. As a consecutive longitudinal microstructured optical fiber, the DMOF contains backscattering enhanced points which greatly improved the signal to noise ratio(SNR) of the acoustic sensing signal. Based on coherent OTDR demodulation method, the amount of phase change caused by sound pressure can be directly obtained. In order to increase the phase sensitivity, sensing fiber between two backscattering enhanced points along the DMOF is wrapped on a hollow cylinder transducer as an acoustic sensing unit. Finally, experiments on detecting sound waves in air are carried out. The results demonstrate that our fiber acoustic sensor has a flat sensitivity frequency response from 500Hz to 5kHz with a phase sensitivity of around -112dB(re rad/μPa) and a peak sensitivity of -83.7dB at 80Hz. It is noteworthy that the sensing mechanism based on the DMOF can be further extended to distributed acoustic sensing.
Efficient Laser-Ultrasound Generation At Optical Fiber Sidewall Based On Core-Offset Splicing Fiber

Abstract:A novel fiber-optic laser-ultrasound transducer based on core-offset splicing fiber is proposed. The experimental operation and working mechanism of the transducer based on ultrasonic generation at sidewall of a core-offset splicing fiber are demonstrated. A 20% coupling ratio core-offset structure was used to fabricate the transducer. Around 480 mV peak-to-peak power ultrasound waves were obtained on the fiber sidewall at the core-offset splicing point with 0.04 mJ laser pulse in the system, which shows a high photoacoustic conversion efficiency. The strength of generated ultrasonic signal can be controlled by adjusting the misalignment size of the core-offset structure. Moreover, the efficient ultrasonic generation at optical fiber sidewall based on core-offset splicing fiber has potential in achievement of multipoint ultrasound generation.

Abstract:Photoacoustic ultrasound excitation has great potential in structural nondestructive testing and applications for medical treatments as a promising alternative to electrical ultrasound. This study proposes and demonstrates a multipoint optical fiber laser-ultrasonic transducer system, wherein the fiber-optic ultrasonic transducer is fabricated by a coreless fiber segment's fusion with single-mode fibers at each end. Simulation and experiment results show that the transducer coupling ratio is dependent on the coreless fiber's length. The structure of such an ultrasonic transducer is easily manufactured. Thus, the structures of these optical fiber ultrasonic transducers with different coupling ratios are connected in the order of small to large coupling ratios. In this manner, multipoint ultrasonic excitation with equal intensities at each excitation point can be obtained using this simple and low-cost method. Using laser guidance through the optical fiber to generate ultrasound can efficiently solve some shortcomings of traditional ultrasonic transducers, such as large volume, small bandwidth, and electromagnetic interference. Moreover, this type of fiber-optic ultrasound transducer has higher mechanical strength than other fiber-optic ultrasound transducers and is expected to be useful in structural health-monitoring of buildings. Fiber-optic Laser-Ultrasound Generation on a Fiber Side Wall Based on Peanut-Shape Structure

Abstract:Ultrasonic nondestructive testing plays a more and more important role in modern production and construction. In this paper, a novel ultrasonic energy transfer technique based on peanut shape structure is proposed and demonstrated. The ultrasonic device is able to effectively couple the laser energy in the fiber core to the cladding of the single-mode fiber (SMF) by using the micro machined fiber structure. The laser energy coupled to the cladding can be absorbed by the ultrasonic conversion material coated on the surface of the SMF. Due to the ultrasonic conversion material has high thermal elastic coefficient, it can produce mechanical expansion and contraction process after absorbing the laser, resulting in the generation of the ultrasonic signal. The ultrasonic transducer based on peanut shape taper only needs to be fused by SMF and fiber splicer. The proposed laser-ultrasonic transducer has many advantages, such as simple preparation, cost-effective, and high energy conversion efficiency. Such characteristics makes the proposed laser-ultrasonic transducer attractive for practical applications.

Abstract:Fiber-optic laser–ultrasound generation is being used in an increasing number of applications, including medical diagnosis, material characterization, and structural health monitoring. However, most currently used fiber-optic ultrasonic transducers allow effective ultrasound generation at only a single location, namely, at the fiber tip, although there have been a few limited proposals for achieving multipoint ultrasound generation along the length of a fiber. Here we present a novel fiber-optic ultrasound transducer that uses the core-offset splicing of fibers to effectively generate ultrasound at multiple locations along the fiber. The proposed laser–ultrasonic transducer can produce a balancedstrength signal between ultrasonic generation points by reasonably controlling the offsets of the fibers. The proposed transducer has other outstanding characteristics, including simple fabrication and low cost.

Abstract:A novel side-excitation fiber-optic laser-ultrasound transducer based on fused taper fiber is proposed and demonstrated. The transducer achieves ultrasound generation at optical fiber sidewall and performs a relative high conversion efficiency. In the experiments, 514 mV peak- to peak power ultrasound wave has been obtained at the fiber sidewall with input 0.04 mJ laser pulse. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the strength of generated ultrasound wave can be controlled by adjusting the taper length of the fused fiber taper. The proposed method is promising candidate to achieve the multi-point laser-ultrasonic generation along a fiber.

Abstract:In this study, a novel fiber-optic, multipoint, laser-ultrasonic actuator based on fiber core-opened tapers (COTs) is proposed and demonstrated. The COTs were fabricated by splicing single-mode fibers using a standard fiber splicer. A COT can effectively couple part of a core mode into cladding modes, and the coupling ratio can be controlled by adjusting the taper length. Such characteristics are used to obtain a multipoint, laser-ultrasonic actuator with balanced signal strength by reasonably controlling the taper lengths of the COTs. As a prototype, we constructed an actuator that generated ultrasound at four points with a balanced ultrasonic strength by connecting four COTs with coupling ratios of 24.5%, 33.01%, 49.51%, and 87.8% in a fiber link. This simple-to-fabricate, multipoint, laser-ultrasonic actuator with balanced ultrasound signal strength has potential applications in fiber-optic ultrasound testing technology.

Abstract:A weakly-coupled multicore fiber can generate supermodes when the multi-cores are closer to enter the evanescent power coupling region. The high sensitivity strain sensors using tapered four-core fibers (FCFs) were demonstrated. The fan-in and fan-out couplers were used to carry out light coupling between singlemode fibers and the individual core of the FCFs. A broadband lightsource from superlumminescent diodes (SLDs) was launched into one of the four cores arranged in a rectangular configuration. When the FCF was substantially tapered, the asymmetric supermodes were produced to generate interferences through this corner-core excitation scheme. During tapering, the supermodes were excited based on a tri-core structure initially and then transited to a rectangular quadruple-core structure gradually to reach the sensitivity of 185.18 pm/μԑ under a tapered diameter of 3 μm. The asymmetric evanescent wave distribution due to the corner-core excitation scheme is helpful to increase the optical path difference (OPD) between supermodes for improving the strain sensitivity.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Ultrasonic testing technology is widely used for its exceptional accuracy and resolution. Commercial ultrasonic testing systems basically use piezoelectric transducers as ultrasonic excitation elements. However, the performance of piezoelectric transducers is not stable enough in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. Therefore, a fiber optic laser-ultrasonic transmitter based on collapsed photonic crystal fiber (CPCF) was proposed. The CPCF guides the laser in the core into the photoacoustic material and realizes the ultrasonic excitation on the side wall of the fiber based on the optical-thermal-acoustic energy conversion. Finite element analysis and experimental research on the photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-CPCF-PCF microstructure show that controlling the CPCF length precisely enables quantitative modulation of the optical coupling coefficient, reflecting the optical energy in photoacoustic energy conversion. Three PCF-CPCF-PCF microstructures with different optical coupling coefficients were fusion spliced onto an optical fiber, and three-point ultrasonic excitation was successfully achieved on aluminum plates. The peak-to-peak values are all around 1.5 V, indicating that the energy of ultrasonic waves is balanced, which helps realize the baseline-free and standardized application of transmitters. Furthermore, the detection effect of ultrasonic waves generated by the transmitter on the thickness and defects of the plate was studied. By analyzing the ultrasonic echoes in the aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer plates, the corresponding wave speeds were calculated to be 6030.52 and 2522.34 m/s, similar to the longitudinal wave speeds in the corresponding materials. The indicators of ultrasonic waves in the time domain and frequency domain are sensitive to the thickness and defects of the plate. The amplitude and time-of-flight of the ultrasonic wave change monotonically with increasing damage severity. This study elucidates the principle of the fiber optic ultrasonic transmitter and demonstrates its capability of quasi-distributed ultrasonic excitation. Furthermore, the feasibility of non-destructive testing based on this transmitter was also verified.

Abstract:We present a compact and robust fiber optic refractive index sensor based on a tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) inscribed in a thin-core fiber that is spliced to a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). Due to the core mismatch between the SSMF and the thin-core fiber, cladding modes generated from the TFBG can be back into SSMF for detection. Since the effective refractive index of a cladding mode is dependent on the surrounding refractive index (SRI), the cladding-mode resonances can be used for measurement. We fabricate the sensor probe and test it in a series solution with different SRIs, and the experimental results agree with the theoretical analysis. The repeatability of the sensor is also tested in the same SRI range. We demonstrate its capability and simplicity to use this sensor for a wide range SRI measurement.

Abstract:Relying on the long-distance mode retention capability of hollow core fibers (HCFs) to achieve particle capture and advancement has become a breakthrough in optical tweezers research. This first requires the HCF to get a balance long distance and pure mode. However, the unique light guide mechanism and complex drawing process make it a difficult question to decrease the number of the allowed modes. In this paper, a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) that only supports pure TE 01 mode over 100 nm bandwidth covering the C + L band with the lowest loss of 10.2 dB/km is proposed. The core wall is used as the only control variable to control the coupling position of surface modes (SMs) in the bandgap to filter unwanted modes and achieve stable single-mode transmission in the fiber. The thick core wall allows the fiber to be crimped to a radius of 0.25 mm. Moreover, characteristics such as mode conversion and manufacturing tolerances are also discussed.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel multipoint transducer system by utilizing the single-mode-multimode-thin-cladding fiber (SMTC) structure. This structure leverages the disparity in mode field diameter between the multimode fiber (MMF) and thin-cladding fiber (TCF) to generate high-amplitude ultrasonic signals safely and efficiently. The fabricated transducer exhibits signal amplitudes 2-3-fold higher compared to conventional laser-ultrasonic transducers. Simulation analysis investigates the impact of the length of the MMF and the diameter of the TCF on coupling efficiency. The coupling efficiency of individual transducer units can be accurately controlled by adjusting the length of the MMF. A three-point energy-balanced laser-ultrasonic transducer system was achieved, with improved energy conversion efficiencies, and the optimal thickness of candle soot nanoparticles (CSNPs) is experimentally determined. Additionally, we carried out experiments to compare the performance of the proposed SMTC-based transducer system under different material conditions using two different photoacoustic materials: graphite-epoxy resin and candle soot nanoparticle-polydimethylsiloxane (CSNP-PDMS) composite. CSNPs, as a cost-effective and easy-to-prepare composite material, exhibit higher photoacoustic conversion efficiency compared to graphite-epoxy resin. The proposed system demonstrates the potential for applications in non-destructive testing techniques.
Ultrahigh Transverse Mode Purity by Enhanced Modal Filtering in Double‐Clad Single‐Ring Hollow‐Core Photonic Crystal Fiber

Abstract:In this work, a first‐of‐its‐kind design of hollow‐core antiresonant fiber with a double‐clad structure is reported, providing unprecedented ability of high‐order‐mode suppression through enhanced mode filtering effects. The results represent a major step forward in the hollow‐core fiber technology, providing new insight in fiber design and fabrication, laser‐field fiber delivery, and optical fiber sensing. Maintaining high fundamental mode purity in low‐loss single‐ring hollow‐core photonic crystal fiber remains a key challenge. Here a double‐clad anti‐resonant‐reflecting design is reported that, through modal filtering, provides high suppression of higher‐order modes while maintaining a low‐loss fundamental mode. The structure consists of a ring of six thin‐walled capillaries fused to the inner wall of a thicker‐walled capillary that is in turn fused at a single point to the silica outer cladding. Greater than 40 dB m−1 suppression of higher order modes over a 6 nm wide window whose central wavelength can be tuned by adjusting the gas pressure is observed. The novel design paves the way to practical applications of such fibers in high‐quality laser beam delivery and low‐noise optical‐signal transmission.
Multipoint All-Fiber Laser-Ultrasound Transducer Using Cascaded Fiber Waist-Enlarged Fusion Tapers

Abstract:In this study, we propose and demonstrate a multipoint fiber-optic laser-ultrasound transducer based on fiber waist-enlarged tapers (WETs), which are fabricated by taper fusing two single-mode fibers. The WET structure can effectively extract some of the light energy from the fiber core and transfer it to the cladding to form a series of higher-order modes that can be used to excite ultrasound waves. The light energy in the cladding can be absorbed and converted into ultrasound waves by the photoacoustic composite coating on the fiber near WET. The coupling efficiency of the WET is dependent upon its taper length and, therefore, can be easily controlled by the splicer during fabrication. Thus, by controlling coupling efficiencies of the WETs, a multipoint laser-ultrasound actuator with a balanced signal strength can be obtained. We constructed a prototype of the actuator and successfully generated ultrasound waves with balanced strengths at four points by connecting four WETs with coupling ratios of 25.24%, 32.25%,49.52%, and 90.62% in a fiber link. This multipoint laser-ultrasound actuator is simple to fabricate and provides a balanced ultrasonic signal strength, and thus, has various potential applications in fiber-optic active ultrasound testing technologies.
Broadband hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler based on a dual-hollow-core fiber embellished with semicircular silver nanowires by using localized surface plasmon resonance

Abstract:A broadband hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler based on a dual-hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (DHC-ARF) embellished with semicircular silver nanowires is proposed. Semicircular silver nanowires are attached to the outer walls of two cladding tubes along the y-direction in the DHC-ARF to excite the localized surface plasmon resonance. By utilizing the mode coupling between y-polarized (y-pol) fundamental mode (FM) and surface plasmon polariton mode to increase the loss of y-pol FM, single-polarization operation can be implemented by filtering the y-pol FM and allowing only x-polarized (x-pol) FM to propagate with low loss between two cores. Finite element method combined with perfectly matched layer as a boundary condition is employed to optimize the properties of the DHC-ARF. Numerical results demonstrate that a hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler is constructed by only using a 1.82 cm long DHC-ARF within a wide bandwidth of 140 nm covering the wavelength range from 1480 nm to 1620 nm, in which the polarization extinction ratio (PER) is lower than − 20 dB and the coupling ratio is within 50 ± 2%. At the wavelength of 1550 nm, the PER reaches − 49.3 dB and the loss of the coupler are as low as 0.22 dB. To the best of our knowledge, this hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler exhibits the widest bandwidth so far, which is at least 12.7 times that of the current reports. This broadband hollow-core single-polarization 3dB coupler has great potential in polarization-sensitive fiber systems.

Abstract:We report a novel low-loss splicing approach for hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HC-PCF) and conventional single mode fiber (SMF) by inserting an etched SMF tip into the hollow core. If the divergence solid angle (DSA) of the inserted fiber tip is smaller than the guiding solid angle (GSA) of HC-PCF, all the radiated optical power from the tip will be collected by PCF with an extremely high coupling efficiency and guided by the PCF based on photonic bandgap effect. A DSA-GSA matching model is proposed to calculate the efficiency for different splicing situations. In the optimal condition of GSA > DSA, the transmission loss could approach zero, only including the scattering loss of etched fiber. Then, we experimentally demonstrate the splicing between NKT HC19-1550-01 and SMF28 with coupling efficiency of 84.5%, agreeing well with the theoretical result of 85%. In addition, our proposed method is coaxiality error free, angle deviation free, and insertion length insensitive. This new technique is expected to provide new possibilities in some special system designs for HC-PCF-based applications.

Abstract:We develop an approach to tailoring the mode of a solid-core polarization-maintaining fiber, with both the reverse tapering process and the thermally expanded core technique, enlarging the mode area and reshaping the mode shape to construct a matched interface with an asymmetric antiresonant hollow-core fiber. An ultralow fusion splicing loss of 0.41 dB and a maintained polarization extinction ratio of 28 dB were demonstrated, with no additional intermediate component.

A bent fiber radiates a part of core energy into fiber cladding for photoacoustic conversion; this energy can be controlled by adjusting the fiber's bend radius. Using such characteristics, a multipoint fiber optic ultrasonic actuator with balanced signal strength was prepared by linking cascade bent fiber structures with reasonable coupling ratios along a fiber. Our inexpensive and easy-to-fabricate actuator can generate balanced ultrasonic signal strength and has potential applications in fiber optic ultrasonic testing technology.
