Abstract:In a measurement-device-independent or quantum-refereed protocol, a referee can verify whether two parties share entanglement or Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering without the need to trust either of the parties or their devices. The need for trusting a party is substituted by a quantum channel between the referee and that party, through which the referee encodes the measurements to be performed on that partyu0027s subsystem in a set of non-orthogonal quantum states. In this work, an EPR-steering inequality is adapted as a quantum-refereed EPR-steering witness, and the trust-free experimental verification of higher dimensional quantum steering is reported via preparing a class of entangled photonic qutrits. Further, with two measurement settings, we extract $1.106pm0.023$ bits of private randomness from our observed data, which surpasses the one-bit limit for qubit systems. Our results advance research on quantum information processing tasks beyond qubits.
Scalable high-rate, high-dimensional quantum key distribution

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a new scheme for measuring high-dimensional phase states using a two-photon interference technique, which we refer to as quantum-controlled measurement. Using this scheme, we implement a $d$-dimensional time-phase quantum key distribution (QKD) system and achieve secret key rates of 5.26 and 8.65 Mbps using $d = 2$ and $d = 8$ quantum states, respectively, for a 4~dB channel loss, illustrating that high-dimensional time-phase QKD protocols are advantageous for low-loss quantum channels. This work paves the way for practical high-dimensional QKD protocols for metropolitan-scale systems. Furthermore, our results apply equally well for other high-dimensional protocols, such as those using the spatial degree-of-freedom with orbital angular momentum states being one example.

Abstract:A quantum random number generator (QRNG) generates genuine randomness from the intrinsic probabilistic nature of quantum mechanics. The central problems for most QRNGs are estimating the entropy of the genuine randomness and producing such randomness at high rates. Here we propose and demonstrate a proof-of-concept QRNG that operates at a high rate of 24 Mbit/s by means of a high-dimensional entanglement system, in which the user monitors the entropy in real time via the observation of a nonlocal quantum interference, without a detailed characterization of the devices. Our work provides an important approach to a robust QRNG with trusted but error-prone devices.

Abstract:Due to the capability of tolerating high error rate and generating more key bits per trial, high-dimensional quantum key distribution attracts wide interest. Despite great progresses in high-dimensional quantum key distribution, there are still some gaps between theory and experiment. One of these is that the security of the secret key heavily depends on the number of the emitted signals. So far, the existing security proofs are only suitable in the case with an infinite or unpractically large number of emitted signals. Here, by introducing the idea of "key classification" and developing relevant techniques based on the uncertainty relation for smooth entropies, we propose a tight finite-key analysis suitable for generalized high-dimensional quantum key distribution protocols. Abstract:High-dimensional quantum key distribution (QKD) offers secure communication, with secure key rates that surpass those achievable by QKD protocols utilizing two-dimensional encoding. However, existing high-dimensional QKD protocols require additional experimental resources, such as multiport interferometers and multiple detectors, thus raising the cost of practical high-dimensional systems and limiting their use. Here, we present and analyze a novel protocol for arbitrary-dimensional QKD, that requires only the hardware of a standard two-dimensional system. We provide security proofs against individual attacks and coherent attacks, setting an upper and lower bound on the secure key rates. Then, we test the new high-dimensional protocol in a standard two-dimensional QKD system over a 40 km fiber link. The new protocol yields a two-fold enhancement of the secure key rate compared to the standard two-dimensional coherent one-way protocol, without introducing any hardware modifications to the system. This work, therefore, holds great potential to enhance the performance of already deployed time-bin QKD systems through a software update alone. Furthermore, its applications extend across different encoding schemes of QKD qudits.

Abstract:High-dimensional entanglement has shown to have significant advantages in quantum communication. It is available in many degrees of freedom and in particular in the time-domain routinely produced in down-conversion (SPDC). While advantageous in the sense that only a single detector channel is needed locally, it is notoriously hard to analyze, especially in an assumption-free manner that is required for quantum key distribution applications. We develop the first complete analysis of high-dimensional entanglement in the polarization-time-domain and show how to efficiently certify relevant density matrix elements and security parameters for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). In addition to putting past experiments on rigorous footing, we also develop physical noise models and propose a novel setup that can further enhance the noise resistance of free-space quantum communication.

Abstract:We present a quantum key distribution scheme based on hyperentanglement swapping, which can simultaneously generate deterministic and random keys without the loss of security. The scheme only requires two\|photon states entangled both in spatial (path) and polarization modes, and such a photon pair can create 4 bit of secure keys (2 bit of random keys and 2 bit of deterministic keys). Our protocol can be implemented with linear optics under current technology.

Abstract:A quantum key distribution protocol, based on the quantum dense encoding in entangled states, is presented. In this protocol, we introduce an encoding process to encode,two classical bits information into one of the four one-qubit unitary operations implemented by Alice and the Bell states measurement implemented by Bob in stead of direct measuring the previously shared Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen pairs by both of the distant parties, Alice and Bob Considering the practical application we can get the conclusion that our protocol has some advantages. It not only simplifies the measurement which may induce potential errors, but also improves the effectively transmitted rate of the generated qubits by the raw key. Here we also discuss eavesdropping attacks against the scheme and the channel loss.

Abstract:Entanglement-based quantum communication offers an increased level of security in practical secret shared key distribution. One of the fundamental principles enabling this security-the fact that interfering with one photon will destroy entanglement and thus be detectable-is also the greatest obstacle. Random encounters of traveling photons, losses, and technical imperfections make noise an inevitable part of any quantum communication scheme, severely limiting distance, key rate, and environmental conditions in which quantum key distribution can be employed. Using photons entangled in their spatial degree of freedom, we show that the increased noise resistance of high-dimensional entanglement can indeed be harnessed for practical key distribution schemes. We perform quantum key distribution in eight entangled paths at various levels of environmental noise and show key rates that, even after error correction and privacy amplification, still exceed 1 bit per photon pair and furthermore certify a secure key at noise levels that would prohibit comparable qubit based schemes from working.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for secure information processing and communications. The canonical optical quantum information processing encodes a single qubit per photon, with remarkable demonstrations of secure quantum communications, linear optical quantum computing amongst others. Often the polarization qubit, a discrete variable with entangled Bell states, is used. Continuous variables such as energy-time modes and spatial modes, however, present a dramatically larger Hilbert space for quantum information processing. The high-dimensional entanglement capture more qubits per photon, enabling dramatically higher secure key rates over longer distances and with better error resilience. Here I will describe our results on high-dimensional entanglement in quantum frequency combs for dense quantum communications. We first demonstrate revival of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferences, long postulated by theorists more than a decade ago, up to 19-dimensions and with visibilities up to 96.5%. The mode-locked two-photon state in high-dimensions is further witnessed through a stabilized Franson interferometer, as a generalized Bell’s inequality test and hyperentangled through multiple degrees-of-freedom. Entanglement revivals of the non-local interference at discrete time-bins are uncovered, up to 97.8% visibility, as a fundamental resource for dense secure information processing.

Abstract:For secure practical systems, quantum key distribution (QKD) must provide high key rates over long distances. Time-entanglement-based QKD promises to increase the secret key rate and distribution distances compared to other QKD implementations. This article describes the major steps in QKD protocols, focusing on the nascent QKD technology based on high-dimensional time-bin entangled photons. We overview state-of-the-art from the information and coding theory perspective. In particular, we discuss the key rate loss due to single-photon detector imperfections. We hope the open questions posed and discussed in this paper will inspire information and coding theorists to contribute to and impact fledgling quantum applications and influence future quantum communication systems.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement is a fundamental resource for secure information processing and communications, and hyperentanglement or high-dimensional entanglement has been separately proposed for its high data capacity and error resilience. The continuous-variable nature of the energy–time entanglement makes it an ideal candidate for efficient high-dimensional coding with minimal limitations. Here, we demonstrate the first simultaneous high-dimensional hyperentanglement using a biphoton frequency comb to harness the full potential in both the energy and time domain. Long-postulated Hong–Ou–Mandel quantum revival is exhibited, with up to 19 time-bins and 96.5% visibilities. We further witness the high-dimensional energy–time entanglement through Franson revivals, observed periodically at integer time-bins, with 97.8% visibility. This qudit state is observed to simultaneously violate the generalized Bell inequality by up to 10.95 standard deviations while observing recurrent Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt S-parameters up to 2.76. Our biphoton frequency comb provides a platform for photon-efficient quantum communications towards the ultimate channel capacity through energy–time–polarization high-dimensional encoding. A high-dimensional hyperentanglement of polarization and energy–time subspaces is demonstrated using a biphoton frequency comb. The long-postulated Hong–Ou–Mandel quantum revival is exhibited, with up to 19 time-bin dimensions and 96.5% visibility.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide a scheme to generate a high-dimensional entanglement source for long distance quantum communication. We utilize a continuous wave pump laser to produce polarization-time two-body four-dimensional entangled photon pairs. Under 20 mW of pump power, we achieve 700 entangled photon pairs per second with a fidelity of 89%±3%. Compared with other known high dimension entangled sources, the developed source in the paper is easy to transmit over a long distance and its phase stability is easy to achieve. Therefore, the source is more suited for the future long distance high-dimensional quantum communication tasks and testing the quantum nonlocality, for example, long distance high dimensional quantum key distribution, experimental testing two-particle Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger theorem, implementation of two-particle quantum pseudo telepathy, etc.

QKD protocols that encode information using high-dimensional quantum states can benefit from increased key rates and higher noise resilience. We define the essence of Twin-Field QKD and explore its generalization to higher dimensions. Further, we show that, ultimately, the Twin-Field protocol cannot be generalized to higher dimensions in accordance with our definition.

Abstract:Quantum key distribution (QKD) guarantees the secure communication between legitimate parties with quantum mechanics. High-dimensional QKD (HDQKD) not only increases the secret key rate but also tolerates higher quantum bit error rate (QBER). Many HDQKD experiments have been realized by utilizing orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) photons as the degree of freedom (DOF) of OAM of the photon is a prospective resource for HD quantum information. Here we proposed and realized a HDQKD scheme based on polarization-OAM hybrid states. By utilizing the nonseparable feature of the vector vortex and the polarization-OAM interconversion ability of the q-plate, both the preparation and measurement procedures of the QKD system are simple and stable. Our QKD system achieves $(0.60pm0.06)%$ QBER and $1.849pm0.008$ bits secret key rate per sifted signal for weak coherent light source with decoy method. Our work also reveals that HD quantum information processing can be simplified in some important scenarios by utilizing the nonseparable feature of vector vortex photons.

Abstract:High-dimensional entanglement provides unique ways of transcending the limitations of current approaches in quantum information processing, quantum communications based on qubits. The generation of time-frequency qudit states offer significantly increased quantum capacities while keeping the number of photons constant, but pose significant challenges regarding the possible measurements for certification of entanglement. Here, we develop a new scheme and experimentally demonstrate the certification of 24-dimensional entanglement and a 9-dimensional quantum steering. We then subject our photon-pairs to dispersion conditions equivalent to the transmission through 600-km of fiber and still certify 21-dimensional entanglement. Furthermore, we use a steering inequality to prove 7-dimensional entanglement in a semi-device independent manner, proving that large chromatic dispersion is not an obstacle in distributing and certifying high-dimensional entanglement and quantum steering. Our highly scalable scheme is based on commercial telecommunication optical fiber components and recently developed low-jitter high-efficiency single-photon detectors, thus opening new pathways towards advanced large-scale quantum information processing and high-performance, noise-tolerant quantum communications with time-energy measurements

A practical framework for analyzing high-dimensional QKD setups

Abstract:High-dimensional (HD) entanglement promises both enhanced key rates and overcoming obstacles faced by modern-day quantum communication. However, modern convex optimization-based security arguments are limited by computational constraints; thus, accessible dimensions are far exceeded by progress in HD photonics, bringing forth a need for efficient methods to compute key rates for large encoding dimensions. In response to this problem, we present a flexible analytic framework facilitated by the dual of a semi-definite program and diagonalizing operators inspired by entanglement-witness theory, enabling the efficient computation of key rates in high-dimensional systems. To facilitate the latter, we show how matrix completion techniques can be incorporated to effectively yield improved, computable bounds on the key rate in paradigmatic high-dimensional systems of time- or frequency-bin entangled photons and beyond.

Abstract:Time-energy high-dimensional quantum key distribution (H D-QKD) leverages the high-dimensional nature of time-energy entangled biphotons and the loss tolerance o f single-photon detection to achieve long-distance key distribution with high photon information efficiency. T o date, the general-attack security of HD-QKD has only been proven in the asymptotic regime, while HD-QKD’s fin ite-key security has only been established for a limited set of attacks. Here we fill this gap by providing a ri go ous HD-QKD security proof for general attacks in the finite-key regime. Our proof relies on a novel e ntropic uncertainty relation that we derive for time and conjugate-time measurements using dispersive opt ics, and our analysis includes an efficient decoystate protocol in its parameter estimation. We present nume rically-evaluated secret-key rates illustrating the feasibility of secure and composable HD-QKD over metropoli tan-area distances when the system is subjected to the most powerful eavesdropping attack.
