Abstract:Computational ghost imaging (CGI) is mainly used to reconstruct grayscale images at present and there are few researches aiming at color images. In this paper, we both theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a colored adaptive compressed imaging method. Benefiting from imaging in YUV color space, the proposed method adequately exploits the sparsity of U, V components in the wavelet domain, the interdependence between luminance and chrominance, and the human visual characteristics. The simulation and experimental results show that our method greatly reduces the measurements required, and offers better image quality compared to recovering red (R), green (G) and blue (B) components separately in RGB color space. As the application of single photodiode increases, our method shows great potential in many fields.

Abstract:Multispectral imaging has attracted much interest in color science area, for its ability in providing much more spectral information than 3-channel color images. Due to the huge data volume, it is necessary to compress multispectral images for efficient transmission. This paper proposes a framework for spectral compression of multispectral image by using cluster-adaptive subspaces representation. In the framework, multispectral image is initially segmented by hierarchical analysis of the transform coefficients in the global subspace, and then ambiguous pixels are identified and classified into proper clusters based on linear discriminant analysis. The dimensionality of each adaptive subspace is determined by specified reconstruction error level, followed by further cluster splitting if necessary. The efficiency of the proposed method is verified by experiments on real multispectral images.

Abstract:An adaptive compressed sampling approach for color images is proposed based on extended wavelet tree theory and multitask Bayesian model. Exploiting the relationship of parent-children coefficients and sibling coefficients in extended wavelet trees, the images in the red, green, blue channels of the color images arc adaptively compressed. Exploiting the correlation of the three channels of color images and multitask Bayesian model, the sampled high frequency wavelet coefficients of three channels arc dealt, respectively, and then the color images arc reconstructed and fused. The research results show that when the sampling times arc 600 and the sampling rate is 14.6%, the peak signal to noise ratio values of the colored reconstructed images obtained by proposed method arc all above 27 dB, while the mean value of color difference is the least, the color difference values tend to be stable, and the color consistency and stability of the images can be kept well.

Abstract:A luminance and color correction algorithm for multi-view video compression is proposed in this paper. Due to the dissimilar radiometric characteristics of different cameras and the variation of lighting conditions, significant luminance and color discrepancies among different camera views often exist in multi-view video sequences. These variations may cause the wrong disparity matching and result in the degradation of coding efficiency. To elevate the multi-view video coding efficiency, a discrepancy model of different views based on modulation and translation parameters is proposed, and the discrepancies among different views are compensated before disparity-matching. The optimization of compensation parameters is discussed, and histogram matching method is used to mitigate the computational load. Experimental results on both visual quality and coding efficiency have verified the validity and robustness of the proposed method

Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive reconstruction method for coded aperture temporal compressive imaging. A pixel-wise equal-exposure coding strategy is first implemented to induce speckle-like features in the moving area of the measured image. A moving area detection method is then proposed to reconstruct the adaptively segmented moving areas into a series of video frames, which are filled back into the stationary clear background. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces the time consumption of video reconstruction without degradation of image quality.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an adaptive reconstruction method for temporal compressive imaging with pixel-wise exposure. The motion of objects is first estimated from interpolated images with a designed coding mask. With the help of motion estimation, image blocks are classified according to the degree of motion and reconstructed with the corresponding dictionary, which was trained beforehand. Both the simulation and experiment results show that the proposed method can obtain accurate motion information before reconstruction and efficiently reconstruct compressive video.

Abstract:Learned image compression methods have achieved satisfactory results in recent years. However, existing methods are typically designed for RGB format, which are not suitable for YUV420 format due to the variance of different formats. In this paper, we propose an information-guided compression framework using cross-component attention mechanism, which can achieve efficient image compression in YUV420 format. Specifically, we design a dual-branch advanced information-preserving module (AIPM) based on the information-guided unit (IGU) and attention mechanism. On the one hand, the dual-branch architecture can prevent changes in original data distribution and avoid information disturbance between different components. The feature attention block (FAB) can preserve the important information. On the other hand, IGU can efficiently utilize the correlations between Y and UV components, which can further preserve the information of UV by the guidance of Y. Furthermore, we design an adaptive cross-channel enhancement module (ACEM) to reconstruct the details by utilizing the relations from different components, which makes use of the reconstructed Y as the textural and structural guidance for UV components. Extensive experiments show that the proposed framework can achieve the state-of-the-art performance in image compression for YUV420 format. More importantly, the proposed framework outperforms Versatile Video Coding (VVC) with 8.37% BD-rate reduction on common test conditions (CTC) sequences on average. In addition, we propose a quantization scheme for context model without model retraining, which can overcome the cross-platform decoding error caused by the floating-point operations in context model and provide a reference approach for the application of neural codec on different platforms.

Abstract:Currently, most deep image compression methods are designed to compress images in RGB color space. However, there are also many images in YUV420 color space and the video coding standards such as H.265/HEVC and H.266/VVC support compression of images in YUV420 color space with their respective Main Still Picture profiles. In this paper, we first study how to adjust the deep compression frameworks designed for images in RGB color space to compress images in YUV420 color space. Then, we study the coding performance impact when we adjust the training distortion weight for YUV channels and compare the experimental results with HEVC and VVC all intra configuration. The proposed approaches are applicable in both image compression and intra coding in video compression.

Abstract:To overcome the drawbacks of available techniques in rapid real time processing of color images, a color image compression system with higher processing rate and higher PSNR was put forward. It was found that with the rotation of YUV space, the chromatogram of an original image can be changed and so the compression effect can be improved. By comparing the effects of available interpolation methods on the quality of the last image restored, a two dimensional digital over lap low pass filter was used, combined with a monochromatic multi mode self adaptive compression method. By the computer testes, it was demonstrated that the proposed system has an obviously higher processing rate and PSNR than JPEG method within a fixed range of compression ratio.
Color Image Reconstruction with Perceptual Compressive Sensing.

Abstract:We propose a novel compressive sensing framework for color images. Recently, compressive sensing (CS) has gain its popularity with the development of deep learning. To our best knowledge, existing methods all deal with RGB images channel by channel. This brings redundancy of measurements. In this paper, we do a breakthrough work. Instead of recovering RGB images channel by channel uniformly, we adopt non-uniform sampling in different channels in YCbCr color space. The luminance component takes up more measurements while the other channels take up less in the proposed framework. It greatly enhances the performance on CS for color images. Moreover, perceptual loss gives a powerful ability to better capture the structure information. We give the measurement rate at 2% as an example in the experiments, and the results show the proposed method outperforms all the existing methods with better structure of images.

Abstract:Coding of a color image usually happens in the YCbCr space so that the rate-distortion optimization is conducted in this space. Due to the use of a non-unitary matrix in the RGB-to-YCbCr conversion, an optimal coding performance achieved in the YCbCr space does not guarantee an optimal quality in the RGB space, which would impact most display devices that need RGB signals as the inputs. In this paper, we first study the relationship between the coding distortions of the compressed RGB signals and the quantization errors occurred in the coded YCbCr signals. Then, we design a new quantization scheme crossing the RGB and YCbCr spaces to achieve a high-quality color image compression with the YCbCr 4:4:4 format. Although our proposed quantization takes place in the YCbCr space, it aims at reducing the coding distortion in the RGB space as much as possible. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method offers a significant quality gain over the existing block-based coding methods for various images.

Abstract:In order to achieve higher image compression ratio and improve visual perception of the decompressed image, a novel color image compression scheme based on the contrast sensitivity characteristics of the human visual system (HVS) is proposed. In the proposed scheme, firstly the image is converted into the YCrCb color space and divided into sub-blocks. Afterwards, the discrete cosine transform is carried out for each sub-block, and three quantization matrices are built to quantize the frequency spectrum coefficients of the images by combining the contrast sensitivity characteristics of HVS. The Huffman algorithm is used to encode the quantized data. The inverse process involves decompression and matching to reconstruct the decompressed color image. And simulations are carried out for two color images. The results show that the average structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) under the approximate compression ratio could be increased by 2.78% and 5.48%, respectively, compared with the joint photographic experts group (JPEG) compression. The results indicate that the proposed compression algorithm in the text is feasible and effective to achieve higher compression ratio under ensuring the encoding and image quality, which can fully meet the needs of storage and transmission of color images in daily life.

Abstract:Real color images are images with noise. The application of gray-scale image enhancement methods in the three-channel of images (R,G,B), on the one hand, increased noise, on the other hand, tended to have a color deviation, which impacted the effect of enhancement. Therefore in view of the difference of human visual system sensitivity of the hue, saturation, luminance and image noise affecting differently on the hue, saturation, and luminance, it proposed a method of image denoised and enhanced in HSV space. In this paper, according to the result of influence of V and S by noise, we transform a real color image from RGB space to HSV space at first, then maintain hue channel unchanged, decompose v channel into high frequency and low frequency information using wavelet transform. And then it directly compresses dynamic range of the j-scale low frequency information based on a new Illumination—Reflectance Model, uses Byes-estimation threshold to denoise in all scale high frequency information. Saturation channel is denoised by some formula from the relationship of S, V and R, G, B. At last, it transforms into a real color images from HSV space to RGB space. Experiments show that image has a good dynamic compression range and slight color deviation, which improve the visual effects and the true effects of color.

Abstract:Deep learning-based end-to-end image compression has achieved significant compression performance in recent years. However, current learning-based image compression methods are designed considering the characteristic of RGB color space, which is not suitable for image compression in YUV 420 color space because of the variance between color formats. To achieve efficient image compression in YUV 420 color space, we propose an information-preserving compression framework using the attention mechanism. Specifically, we design an information-preserving module (IPM), where we utilize the dual-branch architecture to prevent changes in data distribution and propose the feature attention block (FAB) to preserve information. Furthermore, a cross-channel progressive enhancement (CPE) network is designed by taking advantage of the relations among different channels. Ex-perimental results show that the proposed framework outper-forms state-of-the-art compression standard Versatile Video Coding (VVC) with 2.52% BD-rate reduction on common test conditions (CTC) sequences on average.

Abstract:A multiscale geometric analysis method based on Wavelet and Uniform Directional Filter Banks (WUDFB) is structured in order to overcome the insufficiencies of contourlet transform and wavelet-based contourlet transform which are used in compression. A novel WUDFB-based compression algorithm of hyperspectral imagery is proposed, in which intra-band WUDFB and inter-band prediction are used to remove the spatial and spectral redundancy respectively, and no-list set partitioned embedded block coder makes output embedded stream. The experimental results by using 64 band hyperspectral data show that the algorithm achieves higher peak signal-to-noise ratio at high compression ratio and preserves more detail information of original images than the algorithm based on wavelet transform.
A New Image Coding Quality Assessment.

Abstract:Based on characteristics of HVS (human visual system), a new objective image quality assessment is proposed. In this method, the information of luminance, frequency and edge is used to predict the quality of compressed images. Multi-linear regression analysis is used to integrate these information. Experimental results show that this new image quality assessment closely approximates human subjective tests such as MOS (mean opinion score) with high Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.970 and 0.976, which are of significant improvement over some typical objective image quality estimations such as PSNR (peak signal-to-noise ratio).
A Study on the Effect of Color Spaces in Learned Image Compression

Abstract:In this work, we present a comparison between color spaces namely YUV, LAB, RGB and their effect on learned image compression. For this we use the structure and color based learned image codec (SLIC) from our prior work, which consists of two branches - one for the luminance component (Y or L) and another for chrominance components (UV or AB). However, for the RGB variant we input all 3 channels in a single branch, similar to most learned image codecs operating in RGB. The models are trained for multiple bitrate configurations in each color space. We report the findings from our experiments by evaluating them on various datasets and compare the results to state-of-the-art image codecs. The YUV model performs better than the LAB variant in terms of MS-SSIM with a Bjøntegaard delta bitrate (BD-BR) gain of 7.5\% using VTM intra-coding mode as the baseline. Whereas the LAB variant has a better performance than YUV model in terms of CIEDE2000 having a BD-BR gain of 8\%. Overall, the RGB variant of SLIC achieves the best performance with a BD-BR gain of 13.14\% in terms of MS-SSIM and a gain of 17.96\% in CIEDE2000 at the cost of a higher model complexity.
