Abstract:Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a promising technology for the next generation high-speed wireless communication. However, carrier frequency offset (CFO) induced by Doppler frequency drift and mismatch of the transceivers oscillators influences the time synchronization for OFDM systems. In this paper a robust time synchronization scheme compatible to IEEE 802.16a specification is proposed. It uses the symmetrical cross-correlation structure to eliminate the impact of frequency offset totally and to capture the accurate starting position of the FFT windows rapidly. Computer simulations demonstrate that the synchronization scheme is very efficient in combating large CFO.

Abstract:This paper proposes a post-FFT frequency synchronization algorithm for IEEE 802.11n based MIMO OFDM (multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) wireless LAN systems. The proposed synchronization algorithm uses preamble for rapid synchronization, and is thus suitable for burst mode transmission. The proposed method exploits receive diversity, which significantly improves the accuracy of the frequency offset estimation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm operates close to Cramer-Rao lower bound at high SNR, and is robust against multipath fading channels.

Abstract:An IEEE 1588 based application scheme was proposed to achieve accurate time synchronization for a deep seafloor observatory network based on the communication topological structure of the Zhejiang University Experimental and Research Observatory. The principles of the network time protocol (NTP) and precision time protocol (PTP) were analyzed. The framework for time synchronization of the shore station, undersea junction box layer, and submarine science instrument layer was designed. NTP and PTP network signals were decoded by a PTP master clock on a shore station that receives signals from the Global Positioning System and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System as reference time sources. These signals were remotely transmitted by a subsea optical-electrical composite cable through an Ethernet passive optical network. Accurate time was determined by time synchronization devices in each layer. Synchronization monitoring experiments performed within a laboratory environment indicated that the proposed system is valid and has the potential to realize microsecond accuracy to satisfy the time synchronization requirements of a high-precision seafloor observatory network.

Abstract:An optical fiber is a promising approach for data and clock transmission in distributed underwater sonar systems. However, synchronization is a critical challenge in distributed sonar systems, which mandates accurate clock synchronization down to a sub degree. Potential phase misalignment is caused by fiber length variations. In this paper, we propose a fiber-based phase stabilizer method to achieve accurate clock synchronization among sensor nodes. We use fiber-based feedback loop between sensor nodes and central station unit to monitor phase variations. Subsequently, we leverage phase shifters symmetrically arranged on the forward lane and feedback lane to compensate real-time phase variation and maintain high-precision synchronization. Besides, an ambiguity eliminator circuit is designed to remove the clock's cyclic ambiguity. Both analysis and experimental results suggest that the proposed phase stabilizer can achieve 10 MHz reference clock synchronization within 0.4 degree. We also analyze the impact of the reference clock's phase error on the system range detection accuracy, which indicates that the proposed phase stabilizer can greatly improve detection accuracy of sonar systems.

Abstract:With the rapid development of networks,the synchronization of different devices in a distributed system becomes more and more important.To reach the strict limit of some applications in special fields,this paper presents a deep study of the synchronization method of IEEE1588.First,the theory of the IEEE1588(Precision clock synchronization protocol)is expounded,and then a study of the real synchronization system is discussed.Through the analysis of the synchronization system,the way to improve the synchronous system in field-work is put forward.The result from the system test can meet the requirement of such a system.

Abstract:Considering the reference frequency dissemination requirements of the Square Kilometre Array telescope (SKA) project, on the basis of the 1f-2f precision frequency synchronization scheme, we propose and demonstrate a fiber-based multiple-access frequency synchronization scheme. The dissemination reference frequency can be recovered at arbitrary nodes along the entire fiber link. It can be applied to antennas close proximity to the SKA central station, and will lead to a better SKA frequency synchronization network. As a performance test, we recover the disseminated 100-MHz reference frequency at an arbitrary node chosen as being 5 km away from the transmitting site. Relative frequency stabilities of 2.0 x 10(-14)/s and 1.6 x 10(-16)/10(4)s are obtained. We also experimentally verify the feasibility of a frequency dissemination link with three access points.
Nanosecond Precision Time Synchronization for Optical Data Center Networks

Abstract:Optical data center networks (DCNs) are renovating the infrastructure design for the cloud in the post Moore's law era. The fact that optical DCNs rely on optical circuits of microsecond-scale durations makes nanosecond-precision time synchronization essential for the correct functioning of routing on the network fabric. However, current studies on optical DCNs neglect the fundamental need for accurate time synchronization. In this paper, we bridge the gap by developing Nanosecond Optical Synchronization (NOS), the first nanosecond-precision synchronization solution for optical DCNs general to various optical hardware. NOS builds clock propagation trees on top of the dynamically reconfigured circuits in optical DCNs, allowing switches to seek better sync parents throughout time. It predicts drifts in the tree-building process, which enables minimization of sync errors. We also tailor today's sync protocols to the needs of optical DCNs, including reducing the number of sync messages to fit into short circuit durations and correcting timestamp errors for higher sync accuracy. Our implementation on programmable switches shows 28ns sync accuracy in a 192-ToR setting.

Abstract:There is an increasing demand on accurate time synchronization with the growing bandwidth of network service for 5G. In 5G network, it’s necessary for base station to achieve accurate time synchronization to guarantee the quality of communication. In order to keep accuracy time for 5G network, we propose a time synchronization system for satellite ground station based on radio-over-fiber network (RoFN) with software defined optical network (SDON) controller. The advantage of this method is to improve the accuracy of time synchronization of ground station. The IEEE 1588 time synchronization protocol can solve the problems of high cost and lack of precision. However, in the process of time synchronization, distortion exists during the transmission of digital time signal. RoF uses analog optical transmission links and therefore analog transmission can be implemented among ground stations instead of digital transmission, which means distortion and bandwidth waste in the process of digital synchronization can be avoided. Additionally, the thought of SDN, software defined network, can optimize RoFN with centralized control and simplifying base station. Related simulation had been carried out to prove its superiority.

Abstract:We demonstrate a frequency synchronization scheme with the phase noise compensation function placed at the client site. One transmitting module hence can be linked with multiple client sites. As a performance test, using two separate 50 km fiber spools, we recover the 100 MHz disseminated reference frequencies at two remote sites, separately. Relative frequency stabilities between two recovered frequency signals of 2.8E-14/s and 2.5E-17/day are obtained. This scalable scheme is suitable for the applications of frequency dissemination with a star-topology, such as SKA and DSN.

Abstract:We build up a time and frequency synchronization system via the 80 km urban fiber link between Tsinghua University and the National Institute of Metrology in Changping city. Using the system, we demonstrate simultaneous time and RF signal distribution via optical fibers. The measured frequency dissemination stability of a 9.1 GHz RF signal is 7 x 10(-15)/s, 5 x 10(-19)/day, and the measured time synchronization accuracy is 50 ps. Relevant results were published on the Scientific Reports of Nature Publishing Group. To further build up a regional time and frequency network, integrated-designed modules are needed. Its long term continuous running stability and commonality should be tested. In this paper, we introduce the design of the frequency dissemination modules. After 135 days' continuously running, we get the million-second frequency dissemination stability of 8 x 10(-19)/10(6) s. We also introduce our multiple-access download module, which improves the frequency dissemination scheme from the traditional point to point protocol to be a tree structure protocol, and greatly improves its applicability. Using it, the stability of the receiving frequency signal at arbitrary accessing point is almost 4 orders of magnitude better than that using directly accessing method. All of these modules will be applied to build up the regional time and frequency network.

Abstract:Underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) technology facilitates high-speed data transmission among multiple nodes in underwater networks. Nevertheless, the absence of a common clock poses a challenge to achieving systematic and reliable access for multiple nodes within these networks. This paper presents a time synchronization method for UOWC networks to ensure the successful execution of the media access control (MAC) protocol. In this method, the node obtains timestamps by exchanging messages with the optical access point (OAP). Subsequently, the node calculates the clock drift relative to the OAP and the propagation time, ensuring that transmitted data packets can arrive approximately at the time specified by the OAP. To validate the effect of the proposed method, an experimental UOWC prototype, including the OAP and nodes, is implemented using field programmable gate array (FPGA). The experimental results demonstrate that the maximum difference between the actual arrival times of two data packets that are expected to reach the OAP simultaneously according to the MAC protocol meets the requirements of the quasi-synchronous code division multiple access (OS-CDMA) system, thereby substantiating the effectiveness of this synchronization method.

Abstract:SummaryHigh-precision time comparison and synchronization is required with the increasing application of the optical clocks in precise navigation, gravitational sensing, and relativity experiments. However, previous works at femtosecond-level time synchronization did not extend beyond dozens of kilometers. Here we demonstrate real-time synchronization of two optical clocks over a turbulent 113-km free space link via optical two-way time and frequency transfer. Despite optical power attenuation of 80dB due to atmospheric turbulence, the time deviation between two synchronized time scales is below 50 fs over a 15-hour measurement period, and a stability of less than 1.6 × 10 −19 at 10,000 s is achieved through an out-of-loop time-frequency transfer link. The ability to synchronize two distant optical clocks can support future precision navigation, and it also provides technical foundation for the future femtosecond clock synchronization over ground-to-satellite free-space paths.

Abstract:An absolute phase synchronization method based on phase-conjugation scheme is demonstrated. A repeatable phase difference regardless of restart operation and fiber route changing between the phase standard at local site and the recovered signal at the intermediate-access node is achieved. This indicates that absolute phase synchronization to arbitrary nodes along the fiber link is feasible. At the intermediate-access node, this phase difference is highly stable with a fluctuation of +/- 0.014 rad over 10000s. And this phase difference shows consistency within 2% of the full cycle under different situations such as restart operation and fiber route changing. Abstract:Precision time synchronization between two remote sites is desired in many applications such as global positioning satellite systems, long-baseline interferometry, coherent radar detection and fundamental physics constant measurements. The recently developed frequency dissemination technologies based on optical fiber link have improved the transfer instability to the level of 10−19/day at remote location. Therefore it is possible to keep clock oscillation at remote locations continuously corrected, or to reproduce a “virtual” clock on the remote location. However the initial alignment and the correction of 1 pps timing signal from time to time are still required, besides the highly stabilized clock frequency transfer between distant locations. Here we demonstrate a time synchronization based on an ultra-stable frequency transfer system via 120-km commercial fiber link by transferring an optical frequency comb. Both the phase noise compensation in frequency dissemination and temporal basis alignment in time synchronization were implemented by a feed-forward digital compensation (FFDC) technique. The fractional frequency instability was measured to be 6.18 × 10−20 at 2000 s. The timing deviation of time synchronization was measured to be 0.6 ps in 1500 s. This technique also can be applied in multi-node fiber network topology.

Abstract:With the fast development of the internet, the requirements for communication quality continue to increase. Accordingly, spectrum resources become scarce. The Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) has been widely researched in recent years and can be used for communication. OAM is a physical quantity different from electric field strength. Quantum OAM reflects the new physical dimension of OAM. Using quantum OAM for communication, Ultra Narrow Band (UNB) transmission can be realized on the spectrum. In the UNB system with OAM, phase synchronization is the key part. This paper proposes a method to implement the UNB system with phase synchronization. The simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness.

Abstract:We report an optical link of 540 km for ultrastable frequency distribution over the Internet fiber network. The stable frequency optical signal is processed enabling uninterrupted propagation on both directions. The robustness and the performance of the link are enhanced by a cost effective fully automated optoelectronic station. This device is able to coherently regenerate the return optical signal with a heterodyne optical phase locking of a low noise laser diode. Moreover the incoming signal polarization variation are tracked and processed in order to maintain beat note amplitudes within the operation range. Stable fibered optical interferometer enables optical detection of the link round trip phase signal. The phase-noise compensated link shows a fractional frequency instability in 10 Hz bandwidth of 5x10-15 at one second measurement time and 2x10-19 at 30 000 s. This work is a significant step towards a sustainable wide area ultrastable optical frequency distribution and comparison network.

Abstract:For radio telescope array applications, the precise time and frequency reference predominantly determines the quality of the observation. In this paper, we demonstrate an integrated dissemination system which can achieve ultra-stable frequency dissemination, time synchronization and data transfer simultaneously over a single optical fiber link. The test of this integrated system was carried out on the 48-km fiber link, which consisted of 28-km buried fibers, and 20-km fiber spool in laboratory. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the frequency transfer stability is $2.6 \times {10^{ - 14}}/s$ and $3.0 \times {10^{ - 16}}/{10^4}s$. The time synchronization with 100-ps accuracy and the error bit ratio of data transfer at the level of 10-8 are also demonstrated.
