Abstract:Optical inter-satellite link (ISL) with tens/hundreds Gbps is applied into LEO constellation to overcome the insufficient bandwidth of microwave ISL. Moreover, compared with GEO/MEO constellation, LEO constellation suffers from frequent topology switching because of the lowest orbital-altitude. Topology switching between adjacent topology snapshots is generally done through ISL handover (remove or establish ISL). However, service interruption caused by ISL handover within topology switching is a vital issue to address. After ISL handover occurs, isolated topology and slow route convergence (derived from long ISL delay and forwarding the updated message among hundreds/thousands of satellites) may cause severe service interruption. But considering the fact that time-varying topology is predictable and all the ISL handover could be pre-scheduled for topology management purpose, service interruption problem is investigated from the aspect of ISL handover and routing strategy in this paper. Owing to long establishing time of optical ISL, grouped optical ISL handover scheme is raised to decrease route convergence time during topology switching. Furthermore, predictive-update routing scheme based on Open Shortest Path First (OSPF-PUR) is proposed to minimize route convergence time for each ISL handover. For predictable ISL handover, in OSPF-PUR scheme, forwarding table is refreshed according to locally stored ISL handover information but without flooding. Simulation results illustrate that grouped optical ISL handover scheme reduces route convergence time within topology switching while topology connectivity is guaranteed. The route convergence time of ISL handover is effectively decreased by OSPF-PUR scheme. Besides, for OSPF-PUR scheme, packet loss rate remains unchanged while topology switching frequency increases.

Abstract:A multi-path parallel routing strategy based on traffic QoS(Quality of Service) requirements and conditions of ISLs(Inter-Satellite Links) is proposed to deal with traffic diversity in satellite broadband networks to meet requirements of integrated space-ground TT&C(Telemetry,Tracking and Command) networks.The proposed strategy utilizes the history and near-realtime information of ISLs to pre-plan routing.It adjusts the pre-planned routes afterwards according to the realtime information of ISLs and QoS requirements for data communication.Finally,data transmission will take place on several routes between the source and the destination in parallel.The strategy not only ensures high arrival rate of data transmission,but also fully utilizes link resources of satellite networks and efficiently balances the workload among ISLs.

Abstract:Since the demand for mobile real-time application grows fast, the handoff efficiency of mobile IP becomes extraordinarily important. Seamless handoff requires that users and applications do not suffer loss of connectivity or any noticeable interruption in traffic during handoffs. In this paper, we present a seamless handoff scheme for mobile IP, which is especially suitable for large open indoor environments where more than one access points tend to overlap. By introducing a decision making entity which we term control engine, redesigning part of the layer 3 message exchange among communicating entities and utilizing a handoff decision algorithm with pure software-based movement tracking techniques, this novel scheme is able to eliminate handoff latency and packet loss which may have been noticed by a mobile node during handoffs completely. Network simulator-2 was employed to validate the feasibility of this scheme, and the result shows that the performance in terms of latency is eliminated completely. More importantly, this scheme is capable of providing handoff between foreign agents with no packet loss. While the throughput is kept at a relatively high level, the end-to-end delay from correspondent node to mobile node is reduced obviously

Abstract:In recent years, low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks (LSNs) have attracted increasing attention due to economic prospect and advantages in high bandwidth and low latency. In order to provide higher quality of service (QoS) and address the frequent handover problem among LEO satellites, we propose a user-centric handover scheme for ultra-dense LSNs in this letter. Our basic idea is to exploit satellite's storage capability to improve user's communication quality. By buffering user's downlink data in multiple satellites simultaneously, the terrestrial user can realize seamless handover and always access the satellite with the best link quality. Simulation results show that our user-centric handover scheme outperforms the traditional handover scheme in terms of throughput, handover delay and end-to-end latency.
Interruption Tolerance Routing Strategy for Space Information Network

Abstract:Frequent inter-satellite link (ISL) handovers will induce service interruption in large-scale space information networks,since traditional distributed/centralized routing strategy-based route convergence/update will consume considerable time (compared with ground networks) derived from long ISL delay and flooding between hundreds or even thousands of satellites. During the network convergence/update stage,the lack of up-to-date forwarding information may cause severe packet loss. Considering the fact that ISL handovers for close-to-earth constellation are predictable and all the ISL handover information could be stored in each satellite during the network initialization,we propose a self-update routing scheme based on open shortest path first(OSPF-SUR)to address the slow route convergence problem caused by frequent ISL handovers. First,for predictable ISL handovers,forwarding tables are updated according to locally stored ISL handover information without link state advertisement (LSA) flooding. Second,for unexpected ISL failures,flooding could be triggered to complete route convergence. In this manner,network convergence time is radically descended by avoiding unnecessary LSA flooding for predictable ISL handovers. Simulation results show that the average packet loss rate caused by ISL handovers is reduced by 90.5％and 61.3％compared with standard OSPF(with three Hello packets confirmation)and OSPF based on interface state (without three Hello packets confirmation),respectively,during a period of topology handover. And the average end-to-end delay is also decreased by 47.6％,9.6％,respectively. The packet loss rate of the proposed OSPF-SUR does not change along with the increase of the frequency of topology handovers.

Abstract:In future optical satellite networks with various service requirements, the bandwidth of a single traffic request occupies part of an inter-satellite link (ISL) channel capacity, thus leading to a greater demand for flexible resource allocation. The switching scheme is the most important determinant for flexible resource allocation in optical satellite networks, whereas the widely used optical switching techniques, including wavelength switching (WS) and electronic packet switching (EPS), have their own drawbacks such as bandwidth underutilization and high power consumption. In this paper, we utilize optical time slice switching (OTSS) to provide enormous transparent fine-grained connections for various traffic requests. To implement OTSS into low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks, where the lengths of inter-orbit ISLs vary along time, we propose a distance-varying routing and time slice allocation (DV-RTSA) scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that the OTSS-based DV-RTSA scheme not only utilizes less active transponders when compared with the traditional schemes, but also achieves a significant throughput increase over the WS-based scheme and reaches the level of the EPS-based scheme exempting from its defects.

Abstract:In this paper, an inter satellite link handover management scheme based on link remaining time (HM-LRT) is proposed. Since the satellites move in a regular pattern, the remaining time of inter satellite links going downcan be predicted. Based on link remaining time and other information, our link handover management scheme changes the data transmission routes to prevent data packets from going into links that are going to be handed off, so as to reduce the data loss and guarantee the QoS of the satellite communication network. Experiments show that the routing algorithm with HM-LRT outperforms the original routing algorithm.

Abstract:The major shortcomings of MIPv6 in LEO satellite networks are the long handover delay and high handover packet loss rate. To deal with these issues, a simple local forward strategy based on satellite agent is proposed, and it can significantly reduce the handover packet loss rate and handover delay by decoupling the handover process from the interact process of location message. The simulation result shows that the packet loss rate of proposed scheme decreases by about 75%~90% compared with that of MIPv6.

Abstract:Multi-layer satellite network has become a hot spot for its wider coverage and higher bandwidth level. However, due to the frequent link changes and complexity of network, it is hard to find out a mechanism to handle well on long delay and high packet loss level. This paper proposes an optimized OSPF protocol called OOWLP to eliminate unnecessary routing convergence to optimize the packet loss level and delay ultimately. Link plan table, which records link contacting plan, will be used to update the link state database periodically so that we can eliminate the flooding procedure caused by scheduled link changes. On the other hand, Constrained Shortest Path First (CSPF) will be used to get business differentiated routes in multi-layer satellite network to optimized the throughput capacity in congestion scenario. We divide the sending packets into different businesses and get the routes for each business with longer duration limited by remaining bandwidth. Simulation results show that in normal scenario, average packet loss rate and delay performance are improved 17.42%, 51.44ms respectively, average packet loss rate and throughput capacity performance are optimized 79.05%, 9.81Mbps respectively in congestion scenario compared to standard OSPF. As a result, the proposed mechanism is able to shorten the average delay and lower the packet loss level in multi-layer satellite network.

Abstract:The construction of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations has recently spurred tremendous attention from academia and industry. 5G and 6G standards have specified LEO satellite network as a key component of 5G and 6G networks. However, ground terminals experience frequent, high-latency handover incurred by satellites' fast travelling speed, which deteriorates the performance of latency-sensitive applications. To address this challenge, we propose a novel handover flowchart for mobile satellite networks, which can considerably reduce the handover latency. The innovation behind this scheme is to mitigate the interaction between the access and core networks that occupy the majority of time overhead by leveraging the predictable travelling trajectory and spatial distribution inherent in mobile satellite networks. Specifically, we design a fine-grained synchronized algorithm to address the synchronization problem due to the lack of control signalling delivery between the access and core networks. Moreover, we minimize the computational complexity of the core network using information such as the satellite access strategy and unique spatial distribution, which is caused by frequent prediction operations. We have built a prototype for a mobile satellite network using modified Open5GS and UERANSIM, which is driven by actual LEO satellite constellations such as Starlink and Kuiper. We have conducted extensive experiments, and the results demonstrate that our proposed handover scheme can considerably reduce the handover latency compared to the 3GPP Non-terrestrial Networks (NTN) and two other existing handover schemes.

Abstract:The Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks (SAGINs) converges the rapidly developing ground, aerial and satellite communication networks to provide users with efficient and personalized services through the multi-layer network architecture. The complex structure, inconsistent communication protocol, and incompatible equipment significantly affect the information transmission efficiency in SAGINs. The application of Software Defined Network (SDN) technology promotes global deployment of the SAGIN resources. Aiming at the information transmission bottleneck between controller and switch nodes in the software-defined SAGINs, a dynamic handover transmission control scheme based on the queuing game model is proposed. Considering long transmission delay links in the SAGINs, the traditional queuing game model is improved to reduce the number of information interactions. The users' service value are defined as the random distribution to describe the various requirements in the network. In addition, the relationship between the social welfare and the arrival rate of the transmission control system is discussed under two modes of observable and unobservable controller queues. Through theoretical analysis and calculation, the unique handover arrival rate is obtained to make the social welfare equal in the two modes. When the arrival rate is less than the handover threshold, the controller queue is set to unobservable mode, and otherwise to observable mode. Then, the system can operate in an optimal way to obtain the maximum benefit. At last, numerical and system simulation verify the effectiveness of the scheme.

Abstract:For advanced IP-based cellular network, seamless handover is a fundamental issue in mobility management, and it faces many challenges, include in-order packet delivery, no packet replication, no packet loss, low signaling overhead and minimum handover latency. To address these challenges, Optical Wireless Integration (OWI) appears as a promising technology because optical access technologies provide high bandwidth, low transmission delay and reliability. In this paper, we propose a new mobility management protocol for OWI which takes advantage of several mobility management protocols specified by IETF and services defined by IEEE. The performance analysis and numerical results show that our mobility management protocol can effectively solve all the challenges related to seamless handover and can efficiently improve handover performance in terms of handover latency, signaling overhead, packet loss and packet reordering.

Abstract:In the satellite communication, radio frequency power of satellites is limited, and the links of inter-satellite and satellite-ground have the characteristics of frequent switching, long delay and packet loss. The lack of reliable, fixed and pre-designed connections makes the satellite network have the typical features of opportunistic network, especially in the transmission procedure of large volume data streaming. In order to select the appropriate single-hop forwarding node to reduce the delay and energy efficiency, this paper proposes a novel streaming transfer model based on the time-space topology, to describe the dynamic delay and power changes of the link in satellite opportunistic network. Moreover, a novel forwarding scheme based on link stability function (LSF) is proposed, and the appropriate single-hop forwarding node is obtained by solving a dynamic programming problem under the constraints of delay and energy. We choose the Earth-to-Moon communication as the simulation scenario, and utilize STK and MATLAB to analyze the visibility and data volume among the forwarding nodes in the network. The simulation results demonstrate that the LSF scheme decreases energy consumption by 3% and delay by more than 20%, compared with the random unicast scheme, which can significantly improve the transmission efficiency of streaming files in satellite opportunistic networks.

Abstract:The ultra-high link latency of the conventional central reservation switching method in satellite optical networks limits link utilization. In this study, a novel fully distributed competitive satellite optical burst switching (DC-SOBS) mechanism was proposed to overcome the drawbacks of the optical circuit switching method and achieve link multiplexing. Furthermore, the proposed method addressed the low link utilization problem caused by the high link latency of the central-control-related methods. The DC-SOBS mechanism in the ring network of six Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellites improved link utilization by three orders of magnitude compared with the reservation method. A data conflict processing method was proposed to ensure that the same information was provided to various optical switching nodes, and the same algorithm was used to achieve a consistent scheduling result in each node.

Abstract:Under the circumstance of high reliability demand in satellite onboard switches, an Iterative Round-Robin with SLIP (iSLIP) matching scheduling algorithm with load balancing suitable for Combined Input and Output Queuing (CIOQ) switch is presented in this paper. The implementation of load balancer improves the system reliability and the ability of recovery from failure. The iSLIP algorithm with the function of load balancing is used in a 16 x 16 CIOQ switch, and the whole switch fabric is implemented in a Xilinx xc7vx690t FPGA. Typical simulated results are given and analysized.

Abstract:Recently, many satellites are being launched for providing global internet broadband service to individual consumers. Since satellites and users could move separately, providing seamless connectivity has become one of the most important tasks for mobile satellite networks. Current handover methods are based on either signal strength or service time, however, due to the randomness of user terminal (UT) arrivals and the unbalanced traffic distribution for high-mobility satellite networks, the success rate can hardly be guaranteed. To this end, we propose a QoE-driven intelligent handover mechanism for user-centric mobile satellite networks, through which the access satellites can be selected by predicted service time and communication channel resources. Accordingly, to ensure the service duration, a spatial relationship coupling model is proposed to predict relative motion pattern between UT and satellites; To improve the effectiveness of handover, an available channel estimation model is then developed based on the mobility pattern of adjacent satellites. Finally, reinforcement learning is adopted to maximize the UT$^prime$s Quality of Experience (QoE) through predicted handover factors. Simulation results show that the proposed handover mechanism offers good performance in terms of handover times, handover success rate and end-to-end delay.

Heterogeneous Network Switching Strategy Based on Communication Blind Area Dwell Time

Abstract:The limitation of indoor visible light coverage and the attenuation of its signal when propagating in line-of-sight has seriously affected the stable communication of receiving devices when users move randomly and also aggravated the power consumption of visible light networking systems. According to the above situation, on the basis of the heterogeneous networking of visible light communication (VLC) and RF communication integration, this article proposes a horizontal–vertical collaborative handover strategy based on the communication blind area dwell time (CBD-HVHO). Combining asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) technology with networking handover technology, ACO-OFDM is used to determine the indoor communication blind area by calculating the bit error rate (BER) value at the signal receiver while reducing the multipath interference generated by visible light signals during channel transmission. To achieve this, set the communication blind channel interruption time as the threshold time, compare the communication blind area dwell time with the threshold time, and finally combine the horizontal and vertical collaborative handover strategies based on the communication blind area dwell time. The simulation results show that the handover probability is 0.009, the average number of handovers is 1.006, and the average network throughput is 195.2826 Mbps. Compared with the previously proposed immediate vertical handover (I-VHO) scheme and the dwell vertical handover (D-VHO) scheme, the communication stability is significantly improved, and the power consumption of the network system is reduced to a certain extent.

Abstract:Satellites have largely been designed as application-specific and isolated for the past decades. Though with certain benefits, it might lead to resource under utilization and limited satellite applications. As an emerging networking technology, software-defined networking has recently been introduced into satellite networks. In this letter, we propose a software-defined satellite networking (SDSN) architecture, which simplifies networking among versatile satellites and enables new protocols to be easily tested and deployed. In particular, we propose a seamless handover mechanism based on SDSN and conduct physical layer simulation, which shows significant improvement over the existing hard handover and hybrid handover mechanisms in terms of handover latency, throughput, and quality of experience of users.

Abstract:There will be a great of Heterogeneous networks in Next Generation Network. Mobile Satellite system (MSS), great supplement of terrestrial network, provide large scale network coverage and is able to support IP multimedia services. We propose a SIP-based soft handoff scheme for integrated architecture of MSS and UMTS, as well as add satellite access gateway (SAG) in satellite station and terrestrial access gateway (TAG) in GPRS network as SIP proxy of Mobile Host (MH) to realize SIP soft handoff. This scheme could reduce the delay obviously and make the packet loss rate to zero.
