Abstract:Abstract We analytically and numerically investigate a signal light storing mechanism based on controllable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect. We demonstrate that the isolation between the waveguide and the cavities cannot be achieved instantly as soon as the two cavities are tuned into resonance, no matter the index tuning rate is ultrafast or slow. We also investigate the temporal evolution features of the intracavity energy when the pulse during time is prolonged. We find many periodical oscillations of the trapped energy in both cavities, and they are entirely complementary. Our analysis shows that the adiabatic wavelength conversion in both cavities and a phase difference “π” between them play critical rules for this phenomenon.

Abstract:We design and theoretically study the all-optical analog to electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in a system consisting of two heterojunction cavities and one waveguide in a silicon photonic crystal slab with a triangular lattice. Multiple modes with a high Qint/Qc ratio are found in both cavities. By tuning the resonance difference and phase difference between cavities, EIT-like phenomena for two modes at different wavelengths are found. Our analyses show that optical delays of 0.34 and 0.20ns are realized for each optical EIT peak, thereby benefiting further research and applications, such as multiple-wavelength switches, optical buffer devices, and signal processing. The relationship between the characteristics of the optical EIT-like peak and several parameters is investigated, and the results can provide a reference for future experiments. The 3D finite-difference time-domain method is used to analyze the field distribution in the process.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the response of the output field of multiple mechanical modes coupled to a single quantized cavity field via quadratic optomechanical interactions. We focus specifically on two identical membranes in the optical cavity mode. Our study shows that double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be observed from the output field by adjusting the strength of the quadratic coupling coefficient, which can be achieved by controlling the position of the membranes in the cavity. Moreover, for N membranes having the same frequencies, the results indicate that there are at most multicolor (N) EIT in the transmitted probe field.
Quantum Memories with Electrically Controlled Storage and Retrieval in an Opto- and Electro-Mechanical Cavity

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme to realize electrically controlled quantum memories in the opto- and electro-mechanical (OEM) cavity. Combining this OEM cavity with the mechanism of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) we find that the quantum interference, arising from the two optical transitions of the Λ type three-level atomic ensembles, can be manipulated electrically. Numerical calculations show that the probe photon state can be well stored into the atomic spin state by sending an electric current pulse and retrieved with time-reverse symmetry by sending the other current pulse with opposite direction. The quantum interference with electric controlling is expected to apply to other quantum control aspects.

Abstract:Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is a quantum interference effect arising from different transition pathways of optical fields. Within the transparency window, both absorption and dispersion properties strongly change, which results in extensive applications such as slow light and optical storage. Due to the ultra-high quality factors, massive production on a chip and convenient all-optical control, optical microcavities provide an ideal platform for realizing EIT. Here we review the principle and recent development of EIT in optical microcavities. We focus on the following three situations. First, for a coupled-cavity system, all-optical EIT appears when the optical modes in different cavities couple to each other. Second, in a single microcavity, all-optical EIT is created when interference happens between two optical modes. Moreover, the mechanical oscillation of the microcavity leads to optomechanically induced transparency. Then the applications of EIT effect in microcavity systems are discussed, including light delay and storage, sensing, and field enhancement. A summary is then given in the final part of the paper.
Optomechanically Induced Opacity and Amplification in A Quadratically Coupled Optomechanical System

Abstract:We analyze theoretically the features of the output field of a quadratically coupled optomechanical system, which is driven by a strong coupling field and a weak signal field, and in which the membrane (treated as a mechanical resonator) is excited by a weak coherent driving field with two-phonon resonance. We show that the system exhibits complex quantum coherent and interference effects resulting in transmission of the signal field from opacity to remarkable amplification. We also find that the total phase of the applied fields can significantly adjust the signal field's transmission spectrum. The study of the propagation of the signal field in such a quadratically coupled optomechanical system proves that the proposed device can operate as an optical transistor.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect using a double-wheel microcavity coupled with a silica microtoroid cavity. To match the resonant modes of the two microcavities, we shift the resonant wavelength of the double-wheel microcavity by 1.5 nm via the optical gradient force. The EIT-like transmission spectrum is precisely controlled by changing the distance and the frequency detuning between the two coupled microcavities.

Abstract:We verified that optical topological charges are conserved in a two-step light-pulse storage and retrieval process based on the electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) effect in a Pr3+:Y2SiO5 crystal. Based on this conservation law, one could transfer topological charges from the interacting beams, which may not be overlapped in space and time domains, to the targeted output signal beam, and algebraic operations such as summation and subtraction of topological charges carried by the interacting beams were demonstrated via the EIT-assisted two-step light-pulse storage-retrieval process. The results may be useful for classical and quantum information processing based on optical topological charge buffer memory in EIT media.

Abstract:We report electromagnetically induced transparency using quantized fields in optomechanical systems. The weak probe field is a narrow band squeezed field. We present a homodyne detection of EIT in the output quantum field. We find that the EIT dip exists even though the photon number in the squeezed vacuum is at the single photon level. The EIT with quantized fields can be seen even at temperatures of the order of 100 mK paving the way for using optomechanical systems as memory elements.

Abstract:Optical information storage is essential for optical and quantum computation and communication, which can be implemented with various media including atoms, ions, and phonons. The main challenge lies in implementing a robust control to drastically slow down, store and transport ultrafast optical signals. Cavity optomechanics enable information storage by converting photons into acoustic phonons in mechanical resonators. However, fast and controllable effective coupling between multiple mechanical resonators remains elusive for dynamic phonon manipulation and information transfer. This study considers dynamic phonon manipulation via optomechanically induced strong coupling between two distinct mechanical resonators. When the two resonators within an optical cavity are excited to optomechanical self-oscillation, strong coupling is observed when a parametric pump laser compensates for their mechanical frequency mismatch. The strong and controllable coupling between the mechanical resonators demonstrated on the fully integrated nanoscale optomechanical device is promising for dynamic phonon manipulation and robust optical information storage.

Abstract:Optomechanics may be viewed as a light-mechanics interface to realize hybrid structures for (classical or quantum) information processing, switching or storage. Using the two-laser technique, in this paper, we theoretically devise a protocol for quantum light memory via a cavity optomechanical system composed of a Fabry-Perot cavity and a mechanical resonator. Due to the long-lived mechanical resonator, this quantum memory for light based on optomechanically induced transparency (OMIT) can serve as a long-term memory that can store the full quantum light contained in an optical pulse. It is shown that, with the tunable pump laser, the quantum signal light can be reaccelerated and converted back on demand. Our presented work could open the door to all-optical routers for light memory devices and have a guide to actual experiments.

Abstract:Coherent interconversion between an optical and a mechanical excitation in an optomechanical resonator can be used for the storage of an optical pulse as an excitation in a mechanical oscillator. This optomechanical light storage is enabled by external writing and readout pulses at one mechanical frequency below the optical resonance. In this paper, we expand an earlier experimental study [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 133601 (2011)] on storing an optical pulse as a radial breathing mode in a silica microsphere. We show that the heterodyne beating between a readout pulse and the corresponding retrieved pulse features a periodic oscillation with a well-defined phase and with the beating period given by the mechanical frequency, demonstrating directly the coherent nature of the light storage process. The coherent interconversion accelerates with increasing optomechanical coupling rates, providing an effective mechanism for tailoring the temporal profile of the retrieved pulse. Experimental studies on both light storage and optomechanically induced transparency under nearly the same conditions also illustrate the connections between these two closely related processes. Abstract:We propose a versatile, free-space cavity optomechanics platform built from two photonic crystal membranes, one of which is freely suspended, and designed to form a microcavity less than one wavelength long. This cavity features a series of photonic bound states in the continuum that, in principle, trap light forever and can be favorably used together with evanescent coupling for realizing various types of optomechanical couplings, such as linear or quadratic coupling of either dispersive or dissipative type, by tuning the photonic crystal patterning and cavity length. Crucially, this platform allows for a quantum cooperativity exceeding unity in the ultrastrong single-photon coupling regime, surpassing the performance of conventional Fabry-Perot-based cavity optomechanical devices in the non-resolved sideband regime. This conceptually novel platform allows for exploring new regimes of the optomechanical interaction, in particular in the framework of pulsed and single-photon optomechanics.

Abstract:A novel coupled opto-electronic oscillation (COEO) employing an intracavity time lens is investigated via numerical simulation. Different from conventional COEO, this scheme can generate a high-rep-rate low-noise broadband pulse train without the participation of fiber nonlinearity. A 10-GHz pulse train with 9.65-nm 3-dB bandwidth is achieved in the simulation, which is then de-chirped and compressed to 1.85 ps outside the cavity. The analysis of noise characteristics demonstrates that the output pulse train has good noise performance and time lens contributes little to final single-side band (SSB) noise.

Abstract:We report an experimental demonstration of optimal storage and retrieval of heralded single-photon wave packets using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold atoms at a high optical depth. We obtain an optimal storage efficiency of (49+/-3)% for single-photon waveforms with a temporal likeness of 96%. Our result brings the EIT quantum light-matter interface closer to practical quantum information applications. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical interference and the related effects are key elements which could exhibit the properties of both classical and quantum optical systems. Usually, the interference between different optical paths may produce intriguing effects, such as the electromagnetically induced transparent (EIT) and so on. In this work, we study the interference effects in directly coupled whispering-gallery mode (WGM) micro-resonators, in which the emergence of EIT and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) could be observed. We find by tuning the coupling strength between the resonators, the modulation phase may control the appearance and disappearance of EIT (EIA). Furthermore, we prove the existence of fast and slow light, and propose a scheme for effective switching between them. This work provides a new strategy for obtaining slow light and quantum storage in the WGM micro-resonators.
