Abstract:Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we study the associations between three dimensions of health (i.e., physical health, mental health, and cognitive function) and the loss of a child as well as the buffering effects of family support and social security for Chinese older parents. Building a dynamic model of health outcomes, we show that recent child loss is associated with a higher level of depressive symptoms and a lower level of life satisfaction for both fathers and mothers. On the other hand, long-term child loss seems to affect mothers more than fathers in functional limitations and episodic memory. Family support is only able to mitigate the negative effects of child loss on mental health and cognitive function in the short term, while social security can mitigate the negative effects of child loss on physical health and cognitive function in the long term.
