56.3: Depth‐enhanced See‐through Integral Imaging 3D Display System

Abstract:Integral imaging (InIm) proposed by Lippmann in 1908 is a promising technology for 3D display, due to the continuous full parallax, full color display, and no requirement of wearing special glasses for viewer [1,2]. However, it has some disadvantages such as narrow viewing angle, limited image depth, and low resolution. Among them, the limited image depth is a serious issue limiting the practical application of the InIm 3D display. In this paper, we proposed a depth-enhanced seethrough InIm 3D display system by using dual-depth imaging optic device (DIOD). The DIOD, consisting of a transmissive mirror device (TMD) and a semitransparent mirror (STM), can simultaneously display two different images in different depths. The ambient light rays can directly pass through the DIOD without modulation, therefore the viewer can view the displayed 3D image and the real object behind the display system. The DIOD used for InIm can form multiple integral image planes (IIPs) to increase the depth range of InIm.
