Abstract:Separated particles are agglomerated only by the secondary radiation force when trapped at the pressure node. However, the mechanism behind this phenomenon remains unclear. Here, interplays among elastic particles in a trapping process induced by an ultrasonic standing wave are numerically and experimentally investigated. The effects of multi-scattering on particle movement are analyzed by solving the comprehensive acoustic-structure interactions. The theoretical calculations well explain the observed inter-particle behaviors in experiments when they are at or approaching the pressure nodes. Ultrasonic trapping of 100 μm silica particles is experimentally showcased, and the result agrees well with the prediction.

Abstract:The paper addresses the escape of a classical particle from a two-dimensional potential well. For the case of zero initial velocities, the escape basin on the configuration plane is explored. Numeric findings are analyzed versus analytic predictions. To this point, two complementary approaches are devised. The first one involves analysis of gradient system with potential relief of the considered well. The other analytic approach takes advantage of an appropriate modification of the isolated resonance approximation. The combination of two aforementioned analytic approaches provides an outer boundary for the stability basin. The mechanism of erosion of the predicted stability boundary via the secondary resonances is explored numerically.

Abstract:We develop a systematic and efficient approach for numerically solving the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion equation for an open quantum system that can be strongly coupled to an environment. As an important application, we consider a real-time simulation of a spin-boson model in a strong-coupling regime that is difficult to deal with using conventional methods. We show that the non-Markovian stochastic Schr\"odinger equation can be efficiently implemented as a real-time simulation for this model, so as to give an accurate description of spin-boson dynamics beyond the rotating-wave approximation.

Abstract:The evaluation of the Sommerfeld integrals (SIs) has been considered by the quasi-analytical formulas simulating electromagnetic field propagating along the planar surface over a dielectric-coated conductor. The lateral wave and trapped surface wave are resulted from the branch-cut integration and contribution of pole-residue by complex integration, respectively. As a simple but efficient approach, we derive the complex determination equation for poles into a set of equations with real numbers. This technique would eradicate the redundancy roots arose from numerical root finding algorithm, and also provide with some help in extending previous studies into thick-dielectriccoating case.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium thermodynamics can provide strong advantages when compared to more standard equilibrium situations. Here, we present a general framework to study its application to concrete problems, which is valid also beyond the assumption of a Gaussian dynamics. We consider two different problems: 1) the dynamics of a levitated nanoparticle undergoing the transition from an harmonic to a double-well potential; 2) the transfer of a quantum state across a double-well potential through classical and quantum protocols. In both cases, we assume that the system undergoes to decoherence and thermalisation. In case 1), we construct a numerical approach to the problem and study the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of the system. In case 2), we introduce a new figure of merit to quantify the efficiency of a state-transfer protocol and apply it to quantum and classical versions of such protocols.

Tunneling in a Lorenz-like model for an active wave-particle entity

Abstract:Active wave-particle entities (WPEs) emerge as self-propelled oil droplets on the free surface of a vibrating oil bath. The particle (droplet) periodically imprints decaying waves on the liquid surface which in turn guide the particle motion, resulting in a two-way coupling between the particle and its self-generated waves. Such WPEs have been shown to exhibit hydrodynamic analogs of various quantum features. In this work, we theoretically and numerically explore a dynamical analog of tunneling by considering the setup of a one-dimensional WPE incident on an isolated Gaussian potential barrier. Our idealized model takes the form of a perturbed Lorenz system which we use to explore the dynamics and statistics of barrier crossing as a function of initial conditions and system parameters. Our work highlights that velocity fluctuations of the WPE at high memories that are rooted in non-equilibrium features of the Lorenz system, such as spiraling motion towards equilibrium points and transient chaos, give rise to - (i) sensitivity and unpredictability in barrier crossing, (ii) smooth variations in transmission probability as a function of system parameters, and (iii) wave-like features in the transmitted and reflected probability density profiles.

Abstract:Based on the balance between the scattering force and the trapping force of an evanescent field of a standing wave on silicon waveguides, we propose a structure for controllable trapping and releasing of nanoparticles, which can act as pause operation for nanoparticle flow control. The design is realized by the cascade of an optical switch with a structure of a ring-assisted Mach-Zehnder interferometer (RAMZI) and a Sagnac loop reflector which connects to one output of the switch. Through thermal tuning, with a tiny refractive index change of 4.3 x 10(-4) on a ring resonator, the output of a RAMZI can be switched between two ports. As for the release state of the nanopartide flow, the light is guided to the port without a reflector. There is no standing wave or traps formed on a waveguide. Therefore, the scattering force dominates, which drives particles moving forward to output ports. Otherwise, for trapping a state, the light will be reflected by the Sagnac loop and form a stationary standing wave which provides an array of traps for nanoparticles. Most importantly, the structure can switch its state to trap or sequentially release particles without losing the control of samples which, to the best of our knowledge, has not been realized before. With the statistical description of particle motion, the balance between trapping and releasing is distinguished by the trapping time and tuned by reflectance. The feasibility of our design is verified using the three-dimensional finite-difference time domain and Maxwell stress tensor methods. Our structure possesses the merits of high compactness and time effectiveness and, thereby, it is highly suitable for on-chip optical manipulation of nanopartide flow control, which brings great potential in integrated on-chip optofluidics. Non-spreading matter-wave packets in a ring

Abstract:Non-spreading wave packets and matter-wave packets in ring traps both have attracted great research interests due to their miraculous physical properties and tempting applications for quite a long time. Here, we proved that there exists only one set of non-spreading matter-wave packets in a free ring, and this set of wave packets have been found analytically. These non-spreading matter-wave packets can be realized in a toroidal trapped Bose-Einstein condensate system with the help of Feshbach resonance to eliminate contact interaction between atoms. Since experimentally residual interaction noise will always exist, its effect on the stability of these non-spreading wave packets is also examined. Qualitatively, under weak residual interaction noise, these non-spreading wave packets can preserve their shape for quite a long time, while a stronger interaction noise will induce shape breathing of the wave packets. Shape-keeping abilities of these wave packets are further studied quantitatively. We found that this set of wave packets have the same shape-keeping ability against interaction noise. And, the shape-keeping ability is linearly related to the interaction noise strength.

Abstract:Acousotophoretic particle separations in counterpropagating surface acoustic wave (SAW) fields, e.g., standing SAWs (SSAWs), phase modulated SSAWs, tilted angle SSAWs, and partial standing SAWs, have proven successful. But there still lacks analytical tools for predicting the particle trajectory and optimizing the device designs. Here, we study the acoustophoresis of spherical Rayleigh particles in counterpropagating SAW fields and find that particle motions can be characterized into two distinct modes, the drift mode and the locked mode. Through theoretical studies, we provide analytical expressions of particle trajectories in different fields and different moving patterns. Based on these, we obtain theory-based protocols for designing such SAW acoustofluidic particle separation chips, which are demonstrated through finite-element simulations. The results here provide theoretical guidelines for designing high throughput and high efficiency particle separation devices.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the NLS equation with focusing nonlinearities in the presence of a potential. We investigate the compact soliton motions that correspond to a free soliton escaping the well created by the potential. We exhibit the dynamical system driving the exiting trajectory and construct associated nonlinear dynamics for untrapped motions. We show that the nature of the potential/soliton is fundamental, and two regimes may exist: one where the tail of the potential is fat and dictates the motion, one where the tail is weak and the soliton self interacts with the potential defects, hence leading to different motions.

Abstract:This research delves into the dynamic behavior of acoustic levitation of the particle chain in a nonlinear standing wave field. Experimental acoustic levitation control tests reveal bifurcation and jump phenomena during dynamic adjustments to resonant cavity height. Employing the 10-particle chain experiments and the COMSOL simulation models, the Sine-Gordon 2D vibration model is established to study the dynamic deformation process of the particle chain. The study uncovers the nonlinear interaction of particle lateral vibrations, horizontal acoustic radiation force, and conical wave fields that generate the jumping standing wave field. Notably, the fourth particle acts as a prominent jumping critical point in the secondary standing wave field, facilitating the derivation of the particle chain's nonlinear levitation dynamics. This discovery provides us with a new method to regulate the particle chain system.

Abstract:Radiation forces on a dielectric sphere produced by standing wave trapping of non-paraxial Gaussian beams of an electric dipole in the Rayleigh regime of light scattering are analysed theoretically and calculated numerically. The results show that non-paraxial Gaussian beam standing wave trapping can provide larger and sharper radiation forces, more equilibrium positions in one transverse direction and deeper potential well than paraxial Gaussian beam trapping. Therefore, Non-paraxial standing wave trapping has some advantages in capturing minute Rayleigh particles.

Abstract:We present an experimental study on the motion of a spherical droplet in a plane traveling sound wave. The experiments were performed in the test section of a tunnel with two loudspeakers at the two ends of the tunnel. By adjusting the amplitude ratio and the phase difference between the two speakers, a plane traveling sound wave field can be achieved in the test section of the tunnel, which we checked by measuring the amplitudes and phases of the sound pressure along the tunnel and by simultaneously measuring the velocity field of the air flow at three different locations in the tunnel. When a liquid droplet was introduced in the test section, the motion of the droplet and the velocity of the air flow around the droplet were recorded by high speed cameras, from which we analyze and obtain the ratio of the velocity amplitudes and the phase difference between the particle motion and the fluid motion. The experimental data confirm the theoretical result from the wave equations in the long-wavelength regime, i.e., when the particle size is much smaller than the wavelength. Moreover, we showed that in this regime, the theory on particle motion in an unsteady uniform fluid, when the history term is included, also yields the same results that are in agreement with the experimental data and the wave equation. Our result extends the parameter range over which the theory on particle motion in unsteady fluid is checked against experiments, especially to the range of particle-fluid density ratio that is of important practical applications.
Escape dynamics of a particle from a purely-nonlinear truncated quartic potential well under harmonic excitation

Abstract:This paper focuses on the escape problem of a harmonically-forced classical particle from a purely-quartic truncated potential well. The latter corresponds to various engineering systems that involve purely cubic restoring force and absence of linear stiffness even under the assumption of small oscillations, such as pre-tensioned metal wires and springs, and compliant structural components made of polymer materials. This, in contrast to previous studies where the equivalent potential well could be treated as linear at first approximation under the assumption of small perturbations. Due to the strong nonlinearity of the current potential well, traditional analytical methods are inapplicable for describing the transient bounded and escape dynamics of the particle. The latter is analyzed in the framework of isolated resonance approximation by canonical transformation to action-angle (AA) variables and the corresponding reduced resonance manifold (RM). The escape envelope is formulated analytically. Surprisingly, despite the essential nonlinearity of the well, it exhibits a universal property of a sharp minimum due to the existence of multiple intersecting escape mechanisms. Unlike previous studies, three underlying mechanisms that govern the transient dynamics of the particle were identified: two maximum mechanisms and a saddle mechanism. The first two correspond to a gradual increase in the system's response amplitude for a proportional increase in the excitation intensity, and the latter corresponds to an abrupt increase in the system's response and therefore more potentially hazardous. The response of the particle is described in terms of energy-based response curves. The maximal transient energy is predicted analytically over the space of excitation parameters and described using iso-energy contours. All theoretical predictions are in complete agreement with numerical results.

Abstract:The dynamics of active particles is of interest at many levels and is the focus of theoretical and experimental research. There have been many attempts to describe the dynamics of particles affected by random active forces in terms of an effective temperature. This kind of description is tempting due to the similarities (or lack thereof) with systems in or near thermal equilibrium. However, the generality and validity of the effective temperature is not yet fully understood. Here, we studied the dynamics of trapped particles subjected to both thermal and active forces. The particles were not overdamped. Expressions for the effective temperature due to the potential and kinetic energies were derived, and they differ from each other. A third possible effective temperature can be derived from the escape time of the particle from the trap, using a Kramers-like expression for the mean escape time. We found that over a large fraction of the parameter space, the potential energy effective temperature is in agreement with the escape temperature, while the kinetic effective temperature only agrees with the former two in the overdamped limit. Moreover, we show that the specific implementation of the random active force, and not only its first two moments and the two point auto-correlation function, affects the escape time distribution.

Optimization of conveyance of quantum particles by moving potential-well

Abstract:Quantum mechanical control of the position of a particle by using a trapping potential-well is an important problem for the manipulation of a quantum particle. We study the probability of successful conveyance of a particle trapping in a potential-well, i.e., survival probability in the process carrying of the particle for a given length within a given fixed time. For the actual motion of conveyance, we need to accelerate the particle to move and then decelerate it to stop at the destination. First, the relaxation of the survival probability in a constant acceleration rate is studied in detail by direct numerical calculation, the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin method, and a method of the resonance states. The survival probability was found to show an exponential decay in a long time, which is analyzed from a viewpoint of eigenvalue problem. An important source of drop-off comes from a non-analytic change of velocity at the starting point. When the rested particle begins to move, the ground state of the rest frame is redistributed to eigenstates of the moving frame, and then, each eigenstate of the moving frame evolves in time. The dephasing of wavefunctions of the distributed populations reduces the probability of successful conveyance. In general, a smooth start gives a small initial disturbance but requires a large acceleration during the process to reach the destination in the fixed time which causes a larger drop-off in the process. Considering these conflicting facts, we study the survival probability in concrete conveyance schemes. We observe the time evolution of the trapped probability and the population distribution during the conveyance process. In cases that the potential-well has several bound states, we propose a method to select the particle trapped at the ground state by making use of the difference of survival probabilities of bound states.

Abstract:We compare the thermal escape rates of a Brownian particle, initially trapped into one of the two wells of an asymmetric double-well potential, for thermal Markovian and non-Markovian noise. The Markovian treatment of this problem goes originally back to the studies of Kramers in 1940 and is therefore often referred to as “Kramers’ escape rate problem”. We solve the generalized Langevin equation for the trajectories of the particles numerically and analytically for both limiting cases, Markovian and non-Markovian thermal noise. We compute the escape rate and work out the fundamental differences arising from finite correlation times of the thermal noise.

Abstract:We investigate the transverse trapping force acting on a small particle on or off the central axis of zero-order finite Bessel beams. Combining the simulated fields with the Gorkov force potential, the transverse trapping behaviors for small objects are analyzed, and the reversal of the trapping behaviors is recovered when varying the paraxiality parameter of the Bessel beam. The results prove the possibility of using axisymmetric Bessel beams to trap both dense and stiff particles as well as light and soft ones. The particles can be trapped at the maximum central pressure in the main lobe and also the maximum pressure of the other transverse locations. A lossy acoustic metastructure with the ability to decouple the phase and amplitude modulations is used to generate the desired sound field, which is used to trap a foam ball as an example. Abstract:This research investigates the time-dependent wave packet's dynamics for a particle in a 1-D infinite deep quantum well disturbed by a linear potential. The interplay between quantum confinement and the linear potential significantly influences the wave packet's dynamics of this system. Unlike the case of a particle in a 1-D quantum well, where the wave packet exhibits regular evolution and revival with an analytically determinable revival period, the introduction of the linear potential leads to discrete eigenenergy without an analytical expression, which makes accurate calculation of the revival period challenging. Results reveal that, for a given strength of the linear potential, regular evolution and revival of the wave packet occur only in a very small width of the quantum well; for larger widths of the quantum well, this behavior is lost. Additionally, for a given width of the quantum well, weak linear potential leads to regular periodic structures in the wave packet's evolution, while stronger potential induces irregular oscillatory patterns. The revival period of this system can be evaluated through the autocorrelation function, which allows researchers to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamic behavior and periodic properties of wave packets. This study proposes a method to measure the revival period of a particle confined in the external potential, providing a pathway to a more precise understanding of intricate dynamics. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for applications in quantum computing, quantum confinement, and related technologies.
