Abstract:The Chinization of STS is the process of combine the basic theory of STS and the practice of Chinese STS,to format a Chinese context STS.Three basic relationships need to keep balances which are the globality and locality of STS,the theoretical and applied research of STS,and the school review and problem-oriented research of STS.With the beginning of Chinese STS,scholars started to explore the Chinization of STS,and the Socialization of Technology is one of the best try among them.In the process of Chinization of STS,we need to insist on the Marxism STS,root in the Chinese cultural traditional STS,base on the Chinese practical contextual STS,and focus on the Chinese problems-orientated STS.

Abstract:This article examines the historical development of the study of science, technology, and society (STS) in China in relation to the features of contemporary Chinese society and the influence of Marxism tradition, the opening up of China, the system reform, and the evolving state of science and technology (S&T) and its history and cultural tradition. Marxism, especially natural dialectics, had a profound impact on China's STS knowledge system, research team, and disciplinary building. Since 1978, with the opening up of China, Western theories about the sociology of science have been introduced into China and have formed an ever-changing relationship with Marxism (natural dialectics). The system reform in China not only raised questions for STS scholars but also provided an opportunity to rethink relevant STS issues and possibilities for participatory research. At the same time, the conditions of China as an evolving state in S&T-along with its history, cultural traditions, and the particularity of Chinese society-have raised additional intriguing questions for STS research. This article considers the relationship and the paradox between Marxism and Western academic tradition, the object and nature of STS study, as well as the significance of STS research in East Asia and China.

Abstract:To achieve its science and technology development goals and create a conducive external development environment, China needs to bolster the top-level design of its "Science and Technology Statecraft." This systematic project involves utilizing science and technology instruments to achieve foreign policy objectives. The existing literature on "science, technology, and international relations" can provide the theoretical foundation for constructing "China’s S＆T Statecraft." Through an analysis of the structure of scientific institution building, the national identity of scientists, ethics related to science and technology, and S＆T diplomacy since the Cold War, research reveals that China’s S＆T Statecraft must cover at least three distinct aspects. First, there must be a precise study of strategic resource allocation and a clear strategic objective based on an understanding of the international and domestic situation. Second, there must be an efficient transformation from S＆T innovation to comprehensive national power, which requires a synthesis of the “government-enterprise/commercial-academia” R＆D and technological transformation model. Finally, positive and negative approaches to S＆T diplomacy must be employed to enrich the toolbox of foreign policy.

Abstract:Contextualism is a key feature of current STS.The aim of contextualism is to resolve the contradiction between SSK's essentialist approach of ontology,normalist epistemology and naturalist methodology.Naturalism employed by current STSers endows science with practical,contingent,open and local characteristics in order to ontologize the epistemological issues.Philosophically,this contextulism is a practical and historical epistemology which then leads to a historical ontology.The contextualist approach reduces the conflict between social constructivism and realism,and unfolds the new future of STS.

Abstract:The Science-technological anthropology appeared at the end of the 1990s.Recently some theories and case studies about it have become visible.The paper reviews the proposal that experts should study technological anthropology by anthropology's approaches and theories and analyzes case studies of technological anthropology.The author thus argues that case studies of technological anthropology in China emphasize field works of anthropology and word works of enthnology,understanding technology from others' point of views.She also thinks that the ultimate purpose is to learn about the culture information hidden behind technology.She advances some opinions of his own on the development of technological anthropology at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Accompanied with social development,various kinds of ethic of science and technology bring up different results on China's society and technology development.Historical traces of civilization and technology evolution are reviewed to learn historical experience and to find a harmonious road between technology and ethic for Chinese social development.In the historical traces from ancient to modern technology development,there is a clear rheological ethic change.The ethic of sci-technology has passed through the periods from nature and man' harmony to people can conquer nature,and to nature and man's coordination.Only by self-consciously following the natural law,by rationally using scientific and technological strength,and by considering people,nature and society as a related entirety,can we achieve coordinated development of technology and ethic,effectively deal with the global ecological crisis,and strongly advance Chinese social civilization.

Abstract:The rapid development of science and technology has advanced the scientific transformation and resulted in scientific turn of humanistic ideas. For the adherence to the scientism, it is necessary to remove the ethical obstacles in the study of humanities and abandon the traditional objective thinking of the abstract ideology of "seeing is believing". Although the integration of humanities and science is the trend of our times, we should look for theories for its theoretical support and guidance. Most current theories are unable to fulfill this mission, so we need to find and construct new theories. The ethical literary criticism based on science can play a role in the integration of human literature and science. Only the literary theory combined with science can free us from the traditional ethical fetters, can we understand the humanities from the science, and find the way to break through the predicament of humanistic studies.

Abstract:Discusses the historical background and course of the formation and development of STS which is regarded as a crossed and comprehensive discipline to research the interaction and functioning mechanism among science, technology and society. The difference between STS study and others used to study is that STS considers not only the science and technology as a cognitive and creative course , respectively, but both are also as a social course. The three courses are combined with each other to form an organic integration. Reviewing the status quo of STS study in Northeast Asia countries such as Japan, Korea and China, it is seen that in these countries some historical stages feature the STS study which has been developing towards localization, regularization, theorization and systematization in the 21st century.

Abstract:This paper investigates the formation of the concept of science in modern Chinese thought from four perspectives. The first aspect concentrates on the Japanese origin of the concept of science, analyzing this concept through the formation of the late Qing branches of learning, fenke zhixue, and the knowledge system of positivism. The second aspect takes gezhi (investigating things and extending knowledge), qiongli (exhaustion of principle) and other concepts as clues and analyzes the relationship between the concepts of modern science and the study of the school of principle lixue to show the breakdown and connection between scientific concepts fused in the three aspects of nature, morality and politics and the Confucian world view. The third aspect takes as its focus the systematization of scientific research, analyzing the agencies of science, scientific publications and the scientific community's formation and the influence of these elements on society and culture. The fourth aspect takes the May Fourth debate on East-West notions of civilization and the debate on science and metaphysics as its focus, discussing scientific language, the debate between civilizations and the formation of the fields of humanities and social sciences.

With the Opium War as the turning point, China embarked on the development of modern science and technology based on traditional Chinese values imbued with modern Western ideology. Looking back, although that moment was long ago, the idea to rejuvenate the nation with modern science and technology has been lingering throughout the modern and contemporary history of China, and has evolved into a main line and a social consensus deeply integrated into contemporary Chinese culture. The Study of Innovation and Technology in China (SITC) is a project of the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. A Cultural Perpective on STS Study in Japan

Abstract:STS is an exotic subject in Japan.There were cultural factors relevant to STS study in Japan long before it was introduced in the country,by which the STS study spread and developed.Exploring the cultural background of STS study in Japan in a historical and cultural perspective,it is revealed that Japanese cultural tradition always made much of absorbing foreign science and technology,which laid a cultural foundation for spreading STS study.Furthermore,the theoretic research on science and technology at the beginning of 20th century provided a theoretic preparation for STS study.After the World WarⅡ,Japan's shift in emphasizing science education from technology education offered a intrinsic drive to spread STS study.And after 1960s the nation-wide efforts to make much of environment education demanded actually the propagation of STS study.
