Abstract:Yttrium calcium oxyborate (YCOB) is one of commonly used nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with good thermal and NLO properties. In this work, large YCOB crystals without cleavage were grown by the Bridgman (Br) method, and crystal element with the size of 102 mm x 100 mm x 18 mm was harvested for the first time, which is the largest aperture up to now to the best of our knowledge. The optical absorption, homogeneity and bulk laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) were analyzed detailedly. The type-I phase-matched nanosecond (ns) second-harmonic generation (SHG) and picosecond (ps) SHG in YCOB XZ plane (29.1 degrees, 180 degrees) were also demonstrated. The highest SHG conversion efficiency of 73% were achieved from a fundamental source with 2 Hz repetition rate and 50 ps pulse duration at 1053 nm in the 10 mm long YCOB Crystal. It is believed that based on this work, YCOB crystal elements with high quality and large aperture will be used in high power laser system in the near future.

Abstract:Yttrium calcium oxoborate (YCOB) and Nd:YCOB crystals of high optical quality and large dimension have been grown by the Czochralski method. Measurements of refractive indices have confirmed that these crystals were negative biaxial. The absorption spectra were determined and the various spectrum parameters were calculated. Polarized absorption spectra revealed the strong anisotropic character of Nd:YCOB. Raman spectra indicate that the nonlinearity of the crystal is mainly attributed to planar BO3 triangles in the structure rather than to a distortion of oxygen octahedra.

Abstract:Yttrium calcium oxyborate (YCOB) crystals are excellent nonlinear optical crystals. To enhance the thermal properties of YCOB crystal, Sc-doped YCOB crystals, denoted as ScxY1-xCa4O(BO3)3 (x = 0.1 and 0.2) were grown using the Czochralski method along the b-direction. Various measurements, including X-ray powder diffraction, rocking curve analysis, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), transmission spectroscopy, density measurements, and thermal property assessments, were conducted to evaluate the characteristics of the ScxY1-xCOB crystals. The results indicated that ScxY1-xCOB crystals have an isostructural arrangement like YCOB, with segregation coefficients of approximately 0.2. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) values of the rocking curves of the ScxY1-xCOB (x = 0.1 and 0.2) crystals are 33.9″ and 29.3″, respectively. Furthermore, the specific heat, thermal diffusion coefficients and thermal conductivity of the ScxY1-xCOB crystals were examined in the temperature range of 298–573 K, which were found to be higher than those of pure YCOB. These high-quality ScxY1-xCOB crystals are expected to serve as suitable nonlinear optical crystals media for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) applications.

Abstract:Large size of YCa4O(BO3)(3)(YCOB) crystals were grown both by Czochralski and Bridgman methods. Large size elements as large as 60 mm clear aperture were cut and polished with surface flatness of 1/5 wavelength. Optical homogeneity of YCOB crystal was found in the order of 10(-6). Laser damage thresholds of several YCOB crystal elements were tested using different laser facilities with different pulse widths or wavelengths, with thresholds varied from 0.8 GW/cm(2) to more than 1 TW/cm(2). One SHG and two optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) experiments were executed to characterize the nonlinear optical properties of YCOB crystals and the quality of the crystals. The results shown that YCOB had good performance in OPCPA application, especially with low content of parameter florescence. Combined with good NLO performance and possibility to grow large size crystals, YCOB crystal was a good choice for high power OPCPA applications.

Abstract:Large size and high-quality YCa4O(BO3)(3) (YCOB) crystal can be grown using the conventional Czochralski pulling method. The theoretical calculations of the effective coefficient (d(eff)) and the walk-off angles at 530 nm of YCOB along various phase-matching (PM) directions are reported. The PM direction along (theta = 64.5 degrees, phi = 144.5 degrees) for YCOB crystal has the largest d(eff). Second-harmonic generation (SHG) experiments were performed on YCOB crystal along various PM directions. The results show that in 6 mm long YCOB crystal, the SHG conversion efficiency is 39% along the PM direction (theta = 64.5 degrees, phi,= 144.5 degrees) at 80 MW/cm(2) input power density, which is larger than that along (theta = 64.5 degrees, phi = 35.5 degrees) and the PM direction in the XZ main plane. The experimental result is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A new series of nonlinear optical crystals LaxY1-xCa4O(BO3)(3) (LaxY1-xCOB) with multiple components were grown by using the traditional Czochralski pulling method. X-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction experimental results proved that all these crystals formed in the LaxY1-xCOB solid solution state with a monoclinic structure of space group Cm. The optical birefringence was found to be adjustable by changing the compositional parameter x for the LaxY1-xCOB crystals. Taking advantage of the optical parametric oscillator laser, the non-critical phase-matching (NCPM) second-harmonic-generation (SHG) and third-harmonic-generation (THG) wavelengths along the Y-axis were determined at ambient temperature. In addition, the relationships between and among the optical birefringence, NCPM wavelength and crystal structure were discussed, and the NCPM SHG and THG of the 1064 nm laser were further achieved from the La0.120Y0.880COB and La0.140Y0.860COB crystals by adjusting the temperature, respectively. Using a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser as the fundamental light source, the angular acceptance, temperature acceptance, and optical conversion efficiencies were determined and found to be on the order of 107.6 mrad, 18.3 degrees C and 48.8% for SHG of the La0.120Y0.880COB crystal, respectively, and 126.8 mrad, 68.6 mrad, 10.6 degrees C and 32.4% for THG of the La0.140Y0.860COB crystal, respectively. It is demonstrated that LaxY1-xCOB is a promising NLO crystal for NCPM frequency conversion applications in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions.

Abstract:This paper reports the growth of large size,high quality GdCa 4O(BO 3) 3 (GCOB) and YCa 4O(BO 3) 3 (YCOB) crystals using Czochraski pulling method from platinum crucible under air atmosphere for the first time.The 〈010〉 was selected as the optimum growth direction by comparing several growth orientations.The growth habits were studied and the cause of the dendritic growth on the twin interface were discussed.The crystals were known to have broad transparency range and have high transmittance in the deep UV region by measuring their transmission spectra.They have good frequency-doubling function,we obtained 26.7% frequency-doubling conversion efficiency which performed on a 5mm GCOB crystal.GCOB and YCOB crystals also can be realized self-frequency-doubling by doping.

Abstract:As excellent nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, YCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) (YCOB) and GdCa(4)O(BO(3))(3) (GdCOB) have been paid much attention since their first appearance in 1990's. From that time to now, almost all of related researches and applications have focused on their type-I phase-matching (PM) configurations which possess large effective NLO coefficient (d(eff)). In this paper, type-II second-harmonic-generation (SHG) properties of these two crystals are reported, including PM curve, d(eff), angular acceptance and walk-off angle. Both of the type-II SHG experiments for 1064 and 1320 nm have indicated that the optimum directions which have maximum d(eff) locate in the second octant, i.e. (90° < θ< 180°, 0° < ϕ < 90°). For a (112°, 81.3°)-cut, 24 mm long YCOB crystal, the largest type-II SHG conversion efficiency of a 1064 nm Nd:YAG pico-second laser is 55%, which reaches the same level of the optimum type-I sample. To our knowledge this is the first time that type-II SHG performance of YCOB and GdCOB crystals is investigated intensively. Our research has shown that the smaller d(eff) of type-II PM can be compensated by its larger angular acceptance and less beam walk-off. The same level SHG conversion efficiency implies for such type crystals the type-II components have the potential to replace type-I ones and obtain important NLO applications in the future.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation conversion efficiencies of Nd:YCOB and Nd:GdCOB were measured, the effective nonlinear coefficient (deff) for both crystals at different phase-matching angles were estimated by comparison with a KTP crystal. The self-frequency doubling laser performance of these crystals were theoretically calculated by using these deff values and slope efficiency of the fundamental wave and lasing threshold. The results coincide very well.
Remarkable temperature-dependent second-harmonic-generation performance of a YCOB crystal

Abstract:For the first time, the temperature stability of second-harmonic-generation (SHG) is reported for the entire space of a YCa4O(BO3)3 (YCOB) crystal for a temperature range of -10 - 520 °C. Both theoretical calculations and experimental data indicate an optimum phase-matching (PM) direction of (θ = 149.2°, ϕ = 0°), which is located in the XZ principle plane (90° < θ < 180°). A special regression phenomenon of the PM angle was found in this direction, which further increased the SHG output at high temperature (> 200 °C). As a result, for SHG of the Nd:YAG laser, the measured temperature bandwidth of a YCOB crystal cut along the optimum PM direction is larger than 490 °C·cm. As demonstrated in this study, among all nonlinear optical crystals, this cut-type is currently the best choice when temperature-insensitive SHG is required.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical crystals of LaCa4O(BO3)(3) (LaCOB) were grown by the Czochralski method. Crystal cracks induced by cleavage along the ((2) over bar 01) planes were observed and studied with respect to the crystal structure. Efficient second-harmonic-generation (SHG) was realized in the LaCOB crystals for the first time. For a (15 degrees, 180 degrees)-cut with the dimensions of 3 x 3 x 8 mm(3), the SHG conversion efficiency of a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser reached 49%.

Abstract:A series of solid-solution crystals GdxY1−xCa4O(BO3)3 (GdxY1−xCOB) (x=0–1) were grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method. The distribution coefficients of Gd3+ and Y3+ ions in GdxY1−xCOB crystal are 0.952 and 1.069, respectively, which were measured by X-ray fluorescent analysis. So Y3+ ions are easier to incorporate into GdxY1−xCOB crystal lattice than Gd3+ ions. The composition of crystal from the seed to the bottom is homogeneous. The noncritical phase-matching (NCPM) third-harmonic generation (THG) of Nd:YAG laser (1064nm) can be realized in Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystal along the Y-principal axis. The UV cutoff of Gd0.37Y0.63COB is at 320nm when measured by HITARCHI U-3500 spectrophotometer. For the first time, THG experiments of Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystal were performed using Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. The output energy is up to 88.2mJ at 355nm when the input energy is 600mJ for 11mm long Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystal. The THG optical–optical conversion efficiency of Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystal is 14.7%.

Abstract:High-quality Gd0.37Y0.63Ca4O（BO3）3（GdYCOB） crystal was grown forthe first time under air atmosphere.The conversion efficiency of noncritical phase-matching (NCPM) third-harmonic-generation (THG) of GdYCOB crystal was measured.The effect of color center on the THG conversion efficiency of GdYCOB crystal was analyzed.The approach to grow high-quality GdYCOB crystal without color center defects was put forward.

Abstract:Large-sized and optical-quality GdCa4O(BO3)3 (GdCOB) crystal can be grown from melt by CZ pulling method. GdCOB is transparent in the range of 320–2600nm. Second-harmonic-generation (SHG) experiments were carried out on the samples along (θ=90°, φ=46°) phase-matching (PM) direction in the XY-main plane and (66.8°,47.4°), (66.8°,132.6°) PM directions out of the main planes, respectively. The SHG conversion efficiency of an 8mm long sample along (66.8°,132.6°) PM direction was larger than 33% at 31mJ input energy by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which is the best result obtained so far to the best of our knowledge. The deff of these PM directions were estimated by comparing the conversion efficiency with that of KTP crystal. (66.8°,132.6°) PM direction whose deff is 2.1pm/v was reported for the first time as the optimum PM direction in GdCOB crystal. The angular acceptance and walk-off for these different directions were calculated, which shows GdCOB has a small walk-off and a large angular acceptance.

Abstract:Large size and high quality doped and undoped GdCOB crystals were grown using Czochralski pulling method from Pt crucible under air atmosphere. The defects were observed using microscopy combined with chemical etching method. The cause of the twins, inclusions and dislocation defects in GdCOB crystal were discussed, The optimum phase-matching direction is out of the main plane, which is along (theta = 66.8,phi = 132.6). The intracavity second-harmonic-generation (SHG) conversion efficiency of 12mm long GdCOB cut along this optimum PM direction is 25%, 1.22W continuous-wavelength green laser was obtained at IOW LD power. When GdCOB crystal is doped by Sr2+, Bi3+, Li+, Yb3+ and Tm3+ cations, the SHG conversion efficiencies are improved obviously because the cations make the anion groups in GdCOB crystal more distorted. Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystal can realize non-critical PM third-harmonic-generation (THG) at room temperature. The THG properties of beta -BBO and Gd0.37Y0.63COB crystals are compared. The self-frequency-doubling (SFD) properties of NdGdCOB crystal were studied. The SFD optical-optical conversion efficiency of NdGdCOB crystal is 14.4% when pumped by Ti:sapphire laser while it is 7.7% when pumped by dye-laser. The passive Q-switched and modulated Q-switched phenomena were analyzed. The power density of the passive Q-switch pulse was 16.5MW/cm(2). When gadolinium ion was substituted by Dy3+ ion, the Dy:GdCOB crystal will emit yellow fluorescent at 585nm. Yb3+ ion has sensitizing effect on other rare-earth ions in GdCOB crystal. The upconversion mechanisms in co-doped GdCOB crystal were discussed.

Abstract:The angular noncritical phase matching (A-NCPM) second-harmonic-generation (SHG) properties of SmxY1-xCOB (x = 0, 0.44, 0.55 and 1) nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals were investigated. The type-I A-NCPM SHG wavelengths along the Y and Z axes were found to be tunable in the ranges of 725-900 nm and 826-1116 nm, respectively, by adjusting the ratio of the rare-earth elements Sm and Y in SmxY1-xCOB crystals. Taking advantages of the fundamental laser pulses generated from a mode-locked Ti:Sapphire laser and a long Y-cut Sm0.44Y0.55COB crystal sample, the single-pass SHG average output power of similar to 436 mW at 397 nm was obtained with a conversion efficiency of 41.5%. In addition, the SHG phase-matching (PM) curve and the effective NLO coefficients (deff) of SmCOB crystal for 1064 nm laser were studied, where the optimal type-I SHG PM direction in principal planes was determined to exist in the XY principal plane i.e. (90 degrees, 52.4 degrees), rather than the ZX plane i.e. (theta degrees, 180 degrees), which was different with those of TmCOB (32.5 degrees, 180 degrees), YCOB (30.7 degrees, 180 degrees), TbCOB (22.6 degrees, 180 degrees), GdCOB (19.7 degrees, 180 degrees) and LaCOB (15.1 degrees, 180 degrees) crystals in the same crystal family. Abstract:Quasi-parametric chirped-pulse amplification (QPCPA) is a new scheme that enables ideal chirped-pulse amplification with high conversion efficiency and broad gain bandwidth. In this work, high quality 4 in. Sm0.18Y0.82Ca4O(BO3)(3) (Sm:YCOB) crystal was grown by Bridgman method for the first time. The crystal composition, rocking curve, transmittance and emission spectrum, bulk laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) of Sm:YCOB crystal were characterized detailedly. The transmission and emission spectrum shows that the Sm:YCOB crystal may be a potential laser gain medium operating in visible region pumped by diode lasers around 404 nm. The rocking curve and LIDT results indicate the high quality of Sm:YCOB, which is comparable to those of Sm:YCOB and YCOB crystal grown by Czochralski method. The large size and high quality Sm:YCOB crystal harvested in this work may support the development of high efficiency and broadband parametric amplification.

Abstract:The nonlinear-optical coefficients of RCOB (R = Gd, Y) crystals are measured. The spatial distribution of d(eff) (effective nonlinear-optical coefficient) is subsequently determined. Our Experiments show that the maximum d(eff) occurs at the second quadrant. The second-harmonic generation efficiency reaches 48% for a 6 mm long, (113.2 degrees, 47.4 degrees)-cut GdCOB, and 41.5% for a 5mm long, (113 degrees, 36.5 degrees)-cut YCOB, respectively. The intracavity frequency doubling of GdCOB is reported for the first time.
