Abstract:Elemental boron has evoked substantial interestbecause of its chemical complexity in nature. It can form multicenter bonds due to its electron deficiency, which induces the formation of various stable and metastable allotropes. The search of allotropes is attractive for finding functional materials with fascinating properties. Using first-principles calculations with evolutionary structure searches, we have explored boron-rich K–B binary compounds under pressure. A series of dynamically stable structures ( Pmm 2 KB 5 , Pmma KB 7 , Immm KB 9 and Pmmm KB 10 ) containing boron framework with open channels are predicted, which can be possibly synthesized under high pressure and high temperature conditions. After removal of K atoms, we obtain four novel boron allotropes as o -B 14 , o -B 15 , o -B 36 and o -B 10 , which exhibit dynamical, thermal and mechanical stability at ambient pressure. Among them, o -B 14 contains unusual B 7 pentagonal bipyramid and appears bonding combination seven-center-two-electron (7 c –2 e ) B–B π bonds, which is first time to be identified in three-dimensional boron allotropes. Strikingly, our calculation reveals that o -B 14 exhibits as superconductor with a T c value of 29.1 K under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Carbon is a versatile element in the periodic table because of its ability to form various stable and metastable allotropes. In the present work, an orthorhombic carbon allotrope with ‘4-membered rectangles’ is predicated by Particle Swarm Optimization method at 0GPa. Calculations indicate that this new phase is dynamically and mechanically stable although it has a high enthalpy. Its electronic and mechanical properties such as elastic constants, hardness, ideal tensile strength and shear strength are systematically studied. The results show that it is an indirect band gap crystal with a gap of 2.68eV; in spite of its elastic anisotropy, the theoretical hardness of 76.2GPa still makes it a potential superhard material; the obtained ideal tensile strength and shear strength are 69.0GPa and 75.6GPa, respectively, confirming its superhard character. The related microscopic deformation mechanisms are also detailedly analyzed through investigating the corresponding charge density, which reveals that the bonds arranged parallel to the b-axis are responsible for the breakdown of the crystal under the critical tension and shear deformations. These studies provide important information for the potential applications of the crystal once it is synthesized.

Abstract:Single-phase BC4N can be formed at high pressure and temperature, starting with either a mixture of diamond and cubic boron nitride or graphite and hexagonal boron nitride. The samples exhibit extreme Vickers hardness (85 +/- 4 GPa), reaching the hardness of single crystal diamond. Within a random solid solution model, the X-ray diffraction patterns of cubic BCxN solid solutions were calculated. The results indicate that the prepared B-C-N materials are continuous solid solutions with a zinc-blende structure. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Superconductivity in Two-Dimensional Boron Allotropes

Abstract:We use ab initio evolutionary algorithm and first-principles calculations to investigate structural, electronic, vibrational, and superconducting properties of two-dimensional (2D) boron allotropes. Remarkably, we show that conventional BCS superconductivity in the stable 2D boron structures is ubiquitous with the critical temperature T-c above the liquid hydrogen temperature for certain configurations. Due to the electronic states of the Fermi surface originating from both sigma and pi electrons, the superconductivity of the 2D structures arises from multiple phonon modes. Our results support that 2D boron structure may be a pure single-element material with the highest T-c on conditions without high pressure and external strain.

Abstract:A fully tetrahedrally bonded boron nitride (BN) allotrope with an orthorhombic structure (O-BN) was investigated through first-principles calculations. O-BN has a bulk modulus of 371.8 GPa and a hardness of 66.4 GPa, thereby making it a superhard material with potential technological and industrial applications. O-BN becomes thermodynamically more stable than layered hexagonal BN (h-BN) at pressure above 1.5 GPa and is more favorable than the recently reported Pct-BN at any pressure. The phase transformations from h-BN and BN nanotubes to O-BN were respectively simulated, indicating the feasible synthesis of this superhard phase.

Abstract:During past years, a number of reports have been published on synthesis of tetragonal allotrope of boron, t-B52 phase. However, no unambiguous characterization of the crystal structure has been performed to the present time, while remarkable variation of the a/c lattice-parameter ratio raises strong doubts about its uniqueness. Here the Rietveld refinement of the crystal structure of the high pressure - high temperature boron phase synthesized by a direct solid-state transformation of rhombohedral beta-B106 at 20 GPa and 2500 K has been reported for the first time. Although this boron allotrope belongs to the t-B52 type, its structure can be considered as pseudo-cubic with the a/c ratio of sqr(2).

Insight into Two-Dimensional Borophene: Five-Center Bond and Phonon-Mediated Superconductivity

Abstract:We report a previously unknown monolayer borophene allotrope and we call it super-B with a flat structure based on the ab initio calculations. It has good thermal, dynamical, and mechanical stability compared with many other typical borophenes. We find that super-B has a fascinating chemical bond environment consisting of standard sp, sp2 hybridizations, and delocalized five-center three-electron $\pi$ bond, called $\pi$(5c-3e). This particular electronic structure plays a pivotal role in stabilizing the super-B chemically. By extra doping, super-B can be transformed into a Dirac material from pristine metal. Like graphene, it can also sustain tensile strain smaller than 24%, indicating superior flexibility. Moreover, due to the small atomic mass and large density of states at the Fermi level, super-B has the highest critical temperature Tc of 25.3 K in single-element superconductors at ambient conditions. We attribute this high Tc of super-B to the giant anharmonicity of two linear acoustic phonon branches and an unusually low optic phonon mode. These predictions provide new insight into the chemical nature of low dimensional boron nanostructures and highlight the potential applications of designing flexible devices and high Tc superconductors.

Abstract:Boron-based compounds have triggered substantial attention due to their multifunctional properties, incorporating excellent hardness and superconductivity. While tetragonal metal borides LiB4 and NaB4 with BaAl4-type structure and striking clathrate boron motif have been induced under compression, there is still a lack of deep understanding of their potential properties at ambient pressure. We herein conduct a comprehensive study on I4/mmm-structured LiB4 and NaB4 under ambient pressure via first-principles calculations. Remarkably, both LiB4 and NaB4 are found to possess high Vickers hardness of 39 GPa, which is ascribed to the robust boron framework with strong covalency. Furthermore, their high hardness values together with distinguished stability make them highly potential superhard materials. Meanwhile, electron–phonon coupling analysis reveals that both LiB4 and NaB4 are conventional phonon-mediated superconductors, with critical temperatures of 6 and 8 K at 1 atmosphere pressure (atm), respectively, mainly arising from the coupling of B 2p electronic states and the low-frequency phonon modes associated with Li-, Na-, and B-derived vibrations. This work provides valuable insights into the mechanical and superconducting behaviors of metal borides and will boost further studies of emergent borides with multiple functionalities.

Abstract:Crystal structure searching and ab initio calculations have been used here to explore low-energy structures of boron carbides under high pressure. Under pressures of 85-110 GPa, a metastable B6C with R (3) over barm symmetry is found to be energetically more stable than the mixture of previous B4C and elemental boron. This B6C is a rhombohedral structure and contains mooncake-like B-24 clusters with stuffing of C-2 pairs. The mechanical and dynamical stabilities of this structure at ambient pressure are confirmed by its elastic constants and phonon dispersions. The bulk modulus and shear modulus of this newly predicted B6C at ambient pressure reach high values of 291 GPa and 272 GPa, respectively. The Vickers hardness is calculated to be around 48 GPa, and its melting temperature at ambient pressure is estimated to be around 2500 K, indicating that this metastable B6C is a potential superhard material with very good thermal stability. Interestingly, this superhard B6C structure is also found to be superconducting and its superconducting critical temperature (T-c) is evaluated to be around 12.5 K at ambient pressure by electron-phonon coupling. Abstract:Zinc-blende (zb) boron arsenide (BAs) has been confirmed to have impressively high thermal conductivity. However, studies on its phase transitions under pressure have been few. Here, through a recently developed structure search method, we predicted that many polytypes with the structural features of cubic and hexagonal diamond, which are known to be unstable even up to very high pressures for carbon and boron nitride, can become stable at low pressures and might be retained to ambient conditions. Moreover, some of these BAs polytypes are calculated to have impressively high thermal conductivities at ambient conditions and the thermal conductivities for zb- and 2H-BAs will decrease with increasing pressure, which are mainly attributed to the stronger third anharmonic interaction. The current study will open up a route to the search for high thermal conductors.

Abstract:The high-pressure behaviors of large-diameter single-walled boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) are studied by the first-principles method. One sp3-hybridized and three sp2/sp3-hybridized BN allotropes are obtained via compressing large diameter BNNTs. Due to the restricted movement of nonequivalent B and N atoms, the large BN nanotubes have a chance to form B-B and N-N bonds between intertubes under pressure, in addition to the common B-N bonds. The electron localization function and Mulliken's population analysis indicate the covalent nature of the B-B and N-N dimers. The electronic band structure and density of state calculations show a local conducting feature of tP24-BN and superhard semiconducting character of the other three allotropes with indirect band gaps of 1.28 – 3.13 eV.

Abstract:Determination of the structures of materials involving more light elements such as boron-rich compounds is challenging and technically important in understanding their varied compositions and superior functionalities. Here we resolve the long-standing uncertainties in structure and composition about the highest boride (termed MoB4, Mo1-xB3, or MoB3) through the rapid formation of large sized boron-rich molybdenum boride under pressure. Using high-quality single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy, we reveal that boron-rich molybdenum boride with a composition of Mo0.757B3 exhibits P6(3)/mmc symmetry with a partial occupancy of 0.514 in 211 Mo sites (Mol), and direct observations reveal the short-range ordering of cation vacancies in (010) crystal planes. Large anisotropic Young's moduli and Vickers hardness are seen for Mo0.757B3, which may be attributed by its two-dimensional boron distributions. Mo0.757B3 is also found to be superconducting with a transition temperature (T-c) of 2.4 K, which was confirmed by measurements of resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Theoretical calculations suggest that the partial occupancy of Mo atoms plays a crucial role in the emergence of superconductivity.

Abstract:A previous study reported an observed unidentified graphite/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) superlattice structure in special multilayer heterojunction devices via cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy [Haigh S. J. et al., Nat. Mater. 2012, 11, 764-767]. In this letter, we designed and confirmed two possible graphite/hBN superlattice structures (AA and Ab), which were probably the structures observed by the aforementioned experiment. The formation enthalpies of both structures were negative, indicating that they could be successfully synthesized as the previous experiment reported. The results also showed that both structures possessed dynamic stability and elastic stability. Importantly, the theoretical interlayer distances of AA and Ab were 3.34 and 3.30 angstrom, respectively, which were consistent with the experimental value of 3.32 angstrom. The X-ray diffraction patterns and Raman spectra of both structures were simulated to aid in distinguishing them. This study on the atomic structure of the graphite/hBN superlattice lays a foundation for further research and application of this material.

Abstract:Superhard materials have always attracted people's interesting due to their extensive industrial applications. In this work, two reasonable superhard monoclinic allotropes of boron nitrides with space group of Cm have been designed based on previously proposed M-carbon structure using first-principles calculations. Our results show that Cm-BN-1 and Cm-BN-2 are dynamically stable, and they are direct semiconductors with bandgap of 2.69 and 3.90 eV, respectively. Moreover, they could be potential superhard materials with Vickers hardness of 58.0 and 60.4 GPa, respectively. This work provides insights for exploring new superhard boron nitrides materials.
Two-dimensional Antiferromagnetic Boron Form First Principles

Abstract:A new two-dimensional (2D) antiferromagnetic semiconducting boron structure, named as M-B28, is predicted using ab initio evolutionary structure searching. First-principles calculations show that M-B28 has a lower energy than other 2D magnetic boron structures and is dynamically stable. The unpaired electrons from the caps of B26 clusters lead to magnetism in M-B28, while making its highest valence band flat and isolated. The Néel temperature and mechanical properties of M-B28 are evaluated with the Ising model and strain-stress method, respectively, revealing a transition temperature of 32 K and the ideal strengths of 43.7 N/m along x direction and 38.5 N/m along y direction.
Prediction of Quasi-One-dimensional Superconductivity in Metastable Two-Dimensional Boron

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) boron has been predicted to exhibit various structural polymorphs and interesting physics, including superconductivity, ideal strength, negative Possion's ratio, and a higher thermal conductivity than graphene, etc. However, the difficulty in experimental synthesis of 2D boron has further reduced its exploration and applications. In this work we have used a crystal structure search method and first-principles calculations. We have proposed a scheme of "synthesize under high pressure and peel off at ambient conditions" to first predict a bulk phase of KB4, and then peel off free standing 2D boron from it. Based on electron-phonon coupling calculations, we estimated that 2D boron is an intrinsic superconductor with T-c = 17.9 K. In addition we found a strong anisotropy of the electron-phonon coupling strength in 2D boron, thus the superconductivity in 2D boron possesses a quasi-1D feature. Our proposed scheme for the synthesis of free standing 2D boron will stimulate further studies of superconductivity in low dimensional materials, both theoretically and experimentally.

Abstract:Theoretical predictions of pressure-induced phase transformations often become long-standing enigmas because of limitations of contemporary available experimental possibilities. Hitherto the existence of a non-icosahedral boron allotrope has been one of them. Here we report on the first non-icosahedral boron allotrope, which we denoted as {\zeta}-B, with the orthorhombic {\alpha}-Ga-type structure (space group Cmce) synthesized in a diamond anvil cell at extreme high-pressure high-temperature conditions (115 GPa and 2100 K). The structure of {\zeta}-B was solved using single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction and its compressional behavior was studied in the range of very high pressures (115 GPa to 135 GPa). Experimental validation of theoretical predictions reveals the degree of our up-to-date comprehension of condensed matter and promotes further development of the solid state physics and chemistry.

Abstract:Boron is a unique element, being the only element, all known polymorphs of which are superhard, and all of its crystal structures are distinct from any other element. The electron-deficient bonding in boron explains its remarkable sensitivity to even small concentrations of impurity atoms and allows boron to form peculiar chemical compounds with very different elements. These complications made the study of boron a great challenge, creating also a unique and instructive chapter in the history of science. Strange though it may sound, the discovery of boron in 1808 was ambiguous, with pure boron polymorphs established only starting from the 1950s-1970s, and only in 2007 was the stable phase at ambient conditions determined. The history of boron research from its discovery to the latest discoveries pertaining to the phase diagram of this element, the structure and stability of beta-boron, and establishment of a new high-pressure polymorph, gamma-boron, is reviewed.

Abstract:Boron is an element of fascinating chemical complexity. Controversies have shrouded this element since its discovery was announced in 1808: the new 'element' turned out to be a compound containing less than 60-70 percent of boron, and it was not until 1909 that 99-percent pure boron was obtained. And although we now know of at least 16 polymorphs, the stable phase of boron is not yet experimentally established even at ambient conditions. Boron's complexities arise from frustration: situated between metals and insulators in the periodic table, boron has only three valence electrons, which would favour metallicity, but they are sufficiently localized that insulating states emerge. However, this subtle balance between metallic and insulating states is easily shifted by pressure, temperature and impurities. Here we report the results of high-pressure experiments and ab initio evolutionary crystal structure predictions that explore the structural stability of boron under pressure and, strikingly, reveal a partially ionic high-pressure boron phase. This new phase is stable between 19 and 89 GPa, can be quenched to ambient conditions, and has a hitherto unknown structure (space group Pnnm, 28 atoms in the unit cell) consisting of icosahedral B12 clusters and B2 pairs in a NaCl-type arrangement. We find that the ionicity of the phase affects its electronic bandgap, infrared adsorption and dielectric constants, and that it arises from the different electronic properties of the B2 pairs and B12 clusters and the resultant charge transfer between them.
