Abstract:Dispersible FePt intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable composition were synthesized by thermal annealing of MgO coated Al-FePt (or Al-FePt-Fe 3 O 4 ) NPs followed by an acid treatment to remove MgO. High-temperature annealing facilitates the conversion of FePt from disordered alloy to ordered intermetallics. Under the protection of MgO, the diffusion of Fe and Pt atoms was limited, making it possible for the atom reconstruction in the lattice to give discrete FePt intermetallic NPs after a facile acid etching process. FePt intermetallic NPs formed face-centered cubic and face-centered tetragonal structures with their magnetic properties tuned by composition. The saturation magnetization was adjusted from 8 to 52 emu g −1 by increasing the Fe concentration, while the coercivity reached a maximum of 33 kOe when Fe concentration was 44%. After surface modifications by hydrophilic or hydrophobic molecules containing thiol groups, FePt intermetallic NPs could be dissolved into water or hydrocarbon solvents. The hydrophilic L1 0 -FePt intermetallic NPs were applied as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging, showing a high transverse relaxivity of 328.6 mmol −1 L s −1 , which indicated the great potential of FePt intermetallic NPs as molecular probes for cancer diagnosis.
Preparation of Monodisperse and Highly Coercive L10-FePt Nanoparticles Dispersible in Nonpolar Organic Solvents

Abstract:A method to prepare monodisperse and highly coercive L10-FePt nanoparticles which are dispersible in nonpolar organic solvents such as toluene, chloroform, and hexane was developed. By vigorously stirring the SiO2-coated L10-FePt nanoparticles synthesized by the SiO2-nanoreactor method (Appl. Phys. Lett. 2005, 87, 032503) in a mixture of an aqueous NaOH solution, chloroform, and hexadecyltrimethlyammonium bromide, the SiO2 coating was dissolved off and bare FePt nanoparticles could be extracted to the chloroform phase without degrading their magnetic properties. These particles showed a tendency to form a close packed lattice on slow drying of the chloroform-based solution. The present success may promote the practical application to ultra-high density magnetic recording and also may open the door to providing these particles with new physical and/or chemical functions.
Improving the ordering and coercivity of L10-FePt nanoparticles by introducing PtAg metastable phase

Abstract:Third element doping can accelerate ordering transformation and directly synthesize L10-FePt nanoparticles (NPs). However, this accelerating effect is limited due to the extremely low migration rate of Fe and Pt atoms. In this work, PtAg metastable phase is first introduced into chemical synthesis. Compared with the normal direct synthesis, the metastable phase method shows a much higher efficiency on promoting ordering transformation, and the FePt NPs present good dispersity, ultra-high ordering and coercivity up to 8600 Oe. The PtAg metastable phase is easy to be decomposed to Ag and Pt. The obtained Ag atoms migrate to surface area of the NPs because of their higher self-diffusion coefficients and the smaller surface energy. Simultaneously, the Fe atoms migrate into the NPs, and form the FePt phase. During the ordering diffusion of atoms, the mobility of Ag is much higher than that of Fe, which can generate a lot of vacancies in the lattice. These vacancies can obviously improve the migration rate of Fe and Pt atoms in the lattice, and powerfully promote ordering diffusion. Therefore, the introduced metastable phase can construct an optimal condition for the disorder-order transformation, and synthesize FePt NPs with highly ordering degree and good dispersity.

Facile synthesis and surfactant regulated high coercivity of FePt nanoparticles

Abstract:A method of synthesizing high-quality magnetic colloidal dispersions by reduction of Fe(acac)3(acac = acetylacetonate) and H2PtCl6·6H2O in the presence of surfactant poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)(PVP) was employed to produce monodisperse FePt nanocrystals with spherical shapes and sizes of 3.0 nm.XRD and TEM results confirmed that the PVP contents had an effect on the transition degree while no significant effect on the particles size.It was consumed that the PVP most probably played the role of the "catalyst",proper amount of PVP induced the easier transformation of the nanocrystals,so the magnetic properties of the nanoparticles can be tuned by varying the surfactant concentrations(the molar ratio of PVP to precursor).The highest coercivity of 5.2 kOe was obtained with the adjusted PVP / FePt molar ratio of 7 when annealed at 500 ℃ for 30 min.
Halide Ion-Mediated Synthesis of L10-FePt Nanoparticles with Tunable Magnetic Properties

Abstract:L10-FePt nanoparticles (NPs) have great potential in areas of advanced magnetic and catalytic applications. Here, we present a facile control route for synthesis of hard magnetic L10-FePt NPs in which halide ions (Cl-, Br-, or I-) were added to the synthetic process to promote the phase transformation. It is confirmed that the strong ionic binding force between halide ions and Fe3+ or Pt2+ ions could facilitate the formation of L10-FePt phase due to favoring growth of FePt NPs in a more thermodynamically stable way, which enables the formation of an ordered structure. L10-FePt NPs with the highest coercivity of 8.64 kOe and saturation magnetization of 64.21 emu/g at room temperature can be directly obtained by controlling the amount of the halide ions. In comparison with conventional solution phase reduction methods, the halide ion-assisted method shows enhanced capability to tune the growth of hard magnetic bimetallic NPs, particularly Pt-based bimetallic NPs.
In Situ Dispersion of Non-Aqueous Fe3O4 Nanocolloids by Microdroplet Coalescence and Their Use in the Preparation of Magnetic Composite Particles.

Abstract:Monodispersity and size uniformity are critical issues for nanoparticles, especially for the inorganic particles dispersed in organic carriers serving as the precursor of composites. Herein, for the first time, we have developed a method based on flow-induced droplet coalescence for in situ dispersion of surface-modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles to prepare Fe3O4/polystyrene (Fe3O4/PS) composite particles. A plate-type microchannel was constructed to initiate droplet coalescence for reducing the water-oil interfacial area and for dispersing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the precursor suspensions. Under optimized conditions, the precursor suspensions could be composed of monodispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles with an average size of approximately 12 nm. In this case, the saturation magnetization of the prepared superparamagnetic composites was as high as 4.012 emu g(-1) at a magnetite content of 5 wt%. The method is simple and has great potential to be tailored for the preparation of non-aqueous suspensions with uniform and monodispersed nanoparticles.

Abstract:L1 0 -structured platinum–iron (FePt) nanofibers were successfully synthesized by electrospinning technique, followed by calcination and reduction processes. In the preparation procedure, ferrous chloride tetrahydrate [Fe(Cl) 2 ⋅4H 2 O] and iron nitrate nonahydrate [Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ⋅9H 2 O] were, respectively, used as iron sources contained in precursor solution for electrospinning. Subsequently, the FePt nanofibers were obtained from the calcination in air and the followed reduction in hydrogen (H 2 ) of the as-spun FePt/PVP composite nanofibers. The FePt nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry. It was found that the different iron salt used in the spinning solutions could highly affect the FePt nanofiber morphology, crystallite size, and the magnetic properties. The FePt nanofibers, resulted from the spinning solution containing iron dichloride tetrahydrate, were of better crystallinity and well-defined fibrous morphology with an average diameter of about 110 nm. Additionally, the considerably large coercivity of 10.27 kOe was recorded from the above FePt nanofibers.

Abstract:The ordered Pt-based intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with small size show superior magnetic or catalytic properties, but the synthesis of these NPs still remains a great challenge due to the requirement of high temperature annealing for the formation of the ordered phase, which usually leads to sintering of the NPs. Here, we report a simple approach to directly synthesize monodisperse ordered L10-FePt NPs with average size 10.7 nm without further annealing or doping the third metal atoms, in which hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) was found to be the key inducing agent for the thermodynamic growth of the Fe and Pt atoms into the ordered intermetallic structure in the synthetic process. In particular, 10.7 nm L10-FePt NPs synthesized by the proper amount of CTAC show a coercivity of 3.15 kOe and saturation magnetization of 45 emu/g at room temperature. The current CTAC-assisted synthetic strategy makes it possible to deeply understand the formation of the ordered Pt-based intermetallic NP in solution phase synthesis.

Abstract:A one-step synthesis of L1(0) FePt nanoparticles ca. 17.0 nm in diameter by reductive decomposition of the single-source precursor, FePt(CO)(4)dppmBr(2), on a water-soluble support (Na2CO3) is demonstrated. Direct conversion of a FePt(CO)(4)dppmBr(2)/Na2CO3 composite to a L1(0) FePt/Na2CO3 nanocomposite occurs at 600 degrees C under getter gas with metal-ion reduction and minimal nanoparticle coalescence. Triturating the resulting nanocomposite with water simultaneously dissolves the sodium carbonate solid support and precipitates the formed fct FePt nanoparticles. As-prepared FePt nanoparticles are ferromagnetic and exhibit coercivities of 14.5 kOe at 300 K and 21.8 kOe at 5 K. When capped by functionalized methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) surfactant molecules, as-prepared, polydisperse ferromagnetic FePt nanoparticles can be dispersed and size-selected by fractional precipitation.
Surfactants induced morphology control of FePt nanoparticles

Abstract:FePt nanoparticles were successfully prepared via a wet-chemical reduction process,and the complex surfactants oleic acid and oleylamine;citric acid and polyethylene glycol(PEG)as well as single surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS)were chosen to stabilize the as-synthesized system.The surfactants effect on the FePt particles morphology and magnetic properties were compared.XRD,TEM and VSM characterizations indicate that the surfactants have no effect on the particles structure,all the as-synthesized FePt particles possess chemical disordered face centered cubic(FCC) structure,the complex surfactants induced to produce anisotropic morphologies,and the polymer surfactant PEG lead to rice-shape and rod-shape nanostructure.VSM results show that all the as-synthesized nanoparticles possess paramagnetic behavior at room temperature and the spherical particles have the largest Ms while the rod-shape nanoparticles possess the smallest Ms.

Abstract:We have prepared L10-FePt films by sputtering FePt∕Au mutilayers on glass substrates followed by a vacuum annealing process. The magnetic measurement and x-ray diffraction indicate that the ordering temperature of the FePt films is reduced to 350°C and the coercivity (HC) is greatly enhanced by using the FePt∕Au multilayer structure. The interface energy and the stress energy due to the misfit between FePt and Au crystal lattices provide extra driving force to the ordering process of FePt films. Additionally, partial Au atoms are supposed to diffuse to the FePt grain boundaries during annealing, which consequently pins the magnetic domain wall and leads to the high HC.

Abstract:Developing a novel strategy for promoting the disorder–order transition of FePt nanoparticles (NPs) is helpful to improve magnetic and electrocatalytic properties of the FePt NPs. In this research, high magnetic field (HMF) was introduced to wet-chemical synthesis of the L10-FePt NPs. The effects of HMF on the growth and magnetic property of wet-chemical synthesized L10-FePtCu NPs were studied. Cu atoms preferred to occupy the Fe-site in L10-FePt lattice at 6 T HMF, which facilitated this disorder–order transition and increased the ordering degree of L10-FePtCu NPs. When the magnetic dipolar interaction energy was much higher than the thermal energy, the HMF also enhanced the orientation attachment of L10-FePtCu NPs along 〈0 0 1〉 direction, which would lead to the increasing of growing rate and the aligning of NPs. The HMF increased the coercivity of L10-FePtCu NPs by increasing the grain size and the ordering degree. This work provides a promising method for controlling the disorder–order transition, the attachment growth, and the magnetic property of wet-chemical synthesized NPs.

Abstract:L10 ordered FePt and FePtCu nanoparticles (NPs) with a good dispersion were successfully fabricated by a simple, green, one-step solid-phase reduction method. Fe (acac)3, Pt (acac)2, and CuO as the precursors were dispersed in NaCl and annealed at different temperatures with an H2-containing atmosphere. As the annealing temperature increased, the chemical order parameter (S), average particle size (D), coercivity (Hc), and saturation magnetization (Ms) of FePt and FePtCu NPs increased and the size distribution range of the particles became wider. The ordered degree, D, Hc, and Ms of FePt NPs were greatly improved by adding 5% Cu. The highest S, D, Hc, and Ms were obtained when FePtCu NPs annealed at 750 °C, which were 0.91, 4.87 nm, 12,200 Oe, and 23.38 emu/g, respectively. The structure and magnetic properties of FePt and FePtCu NPs at different annealing temperatures were investigated and the formation mechanism of FePt and FePtCu NPs were discussed in detail.

Polyol Synthesis of Superparamagnetic Fe_3O_4 Nanoparticles for Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Abstract:The superparamagnetic Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles with core size of 5～10 nm were prepared by polyol process at high temperature.The products have high monodispersibility in aqueous solution.Moreover,the effects of the growth conditions such as modification agents and their amount,temperature,time on the size and monodispersibility of Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles were investigated.It was indicated that choosing the modification agent with strong polar group,increasing the amount of modification agents,elevating reaction temperature and extending reaction time were beneficial to the products with larger particle size,better water-dispersibility and narrower size distribution.The magnetization analysis indicated that all samples showed the superparamagnetic property at room temperature.Moreover,the larger particle size,the higher saturation magnetization.Finally,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) experiment indicated that the as-synthesized products showed the good contrast performance and the Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles modified with PVP were the best one.

Abstract:It is extremely desirable but challenging to develop a facile solution phase synthesis to directly prepare well-dispersed L1(0)-FePt nanoparticles (NPs) to meet the requirements of advanced magnets in modern industry and information technology. Here, we report a novel strategy to synthesize hard magnetic L1(0)-FePt NPs via controlled co-reduction of Fe(acac)(3) and K2PtCl6 in the presence of oleylamine, in which effective control of the magnetic properties and chemical ordering of L1(0)-FePt NPs was achieved by tuning the mole ratio of the precursors, reaction time and temperature. The highest coercivity of 10.5 kOe can be obtained for the NPs synthesized at 350 degrees C for 8 h, which is much higher than the coercivities reported by the previous studies on solution-synthesized FePt NPs without annealing or the third elemental additive. The reported one-pot synthesis of L1(0)-FePt NPs may provide an ideal class of building blocks for magnetic energy applications.

Abstract:Dispersions of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) can exhibit paramagnetic ferrofluid or ferromagnetic liquid behavior. By modifying the surface functionality of MNPs, ferrofluids have been used to fabricate novel magnetically actuated devices. If the surface-functionalized MNPs interact with complementary ligands at a fluid–fluid interface, MNP surfactants form and in situ assemble at the interface. When jammed interfacially, MNP surfactants give rise to ferromagnetic behavior of the liquid (droplet), which is endowed with permanent magnetic dipoles while maintaining all of the characteristics of a fluid system. Here, we give a brief overview of the developments in the dispersion of MNPs in liquids from ferrofluids to ferromagnetic liquid droplets, their responses to external fields, and the manipulation of these responses for end uses. The reversible room-temperature para-to-ferro transformation of magnetic liquids is highlighted. We discuss challenges in the synthesis and characterization of these unusual liquids along with potential technological applications.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hydrophilic FePt nanoparticles (NPs) have been embedded into the MgO-matrix systems via a sol–gel process to prevent FePt NPs from aggregating and sintering during the heat-treatment process required for the L 1 0 ordering. The chemically ordered L 1 0 -phase FePt can be obtained after annealing at 700 °C for 60 min in atmosphere containing H 2 . The effect of the pH value of MgO collosol and FePt nanocrystal loading amount on the structure, morphology, and magnetic properties of FePt/MgO nanocomposites has been investigated. The neutral pH value of 7 in MgO sol is beneficial to stabilize FePt NPs and obtain higher chemical ordering parameter S for the face-centered tetragonal -FePt/MgO nanocomposites with larger coercivity. The FePt NPs loading amount also plays a key role in tuning the microstructure and magnetic properties of the nanocomposites. The relatively higher FePt NPs loading with FePt/MgO molar ratio (R FM ) of 1:2 leads to relatively perfect hexagonal assembly and pure L 1 0 phase. When the R FM is 1:5 and 1:10, the MgO-matrix in nanocomposites causes the Fe element loss in FePt NPs along with formation of secondary phases such as magnesioferrite or Pt 3 Fe during the annealing process. Under optimal processing of neutral pH value of 7 and R FM of 1:2, the presence of MgO matrix produces more homogeneous microstructures and better magnetic properties with higher room-temperature coercivity ( H C = 4.65 kOe).

Abstract:FePt nanoparticles with different morphologies were successfully prepared in the presence of surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) with the addition of different molar ratio of surfactant SDBS to precursors of FePt(SDBS/FePt) by a soft-solution approach.XRD and TEM characterizations indicated that the as-synthesized particles possessed chemically disordered face centered cubic(FCC) structure.And the morphologies showed spherical,irregular schistose and dendritic structure respectively when changing the molar ratio of SDBS/FePt from 7∶ 1 to 9∶ 1 and 11∶ 1.VSM results indicated that the as-synthesized nanoparticles showed zero coercivity and possessed paramagnetic behavior at room temperature and transformed into ferromagnetic when annealed at 500 ℃ for 30 min under inert gas of Ar.When adjusted the molar ratio of SDBS/FePt from 7∶ 1 to 9∶ 1 and 11∶ 1,the coercivity was 4489,30429,18457 A · m-1 respectively,and the saturation magnetization Ms changed from 6.65,22.45 to 11.43 Am2 · kg-1.The magnetic energy product showed the largest at SDBS/FePt=9∶ 1.It could be inferred that the result of differences in nanoparticle morphology although the magnetic property of nanoparticles was the result of the comprehensive effect of nanoparticle size,morphology,component,crystallinity and structure.The morphology and magnetic properties of FePt nanoparticles were controlled by changing the content of surfactant and provided a new way to the morphology and magnetic properties control of FePt nanoparticles.
